It's been said to help with insulin... I have heard diabetics taking it too.. I don't know all of it, but hey, it's cinnamon, it can't hurt you. LOL

SLCOLMAN,
What do your Metformin look like? Are there numbers on them? I ask because a couple years ago I was on 250mg and it was horrible, i was always in the bathroom. I expected to have the side affect bad when I started on the 500mg.. I haven't had any trouble and am almost wondering if it's the wrong pills in the bottle..

Thanks,
Cindy

Hi Luv

I got off the metformin because the doc was worried that if I stayed on it with a normal BG level that it might send it further down, and that is something he doesn't wish to risk when my body appears to now be using the insulin produced.

As to how do I keep them straight I have a little pill box set that I put them all in according to when they will be taken, and I tend to take them all at the same time (as in 5 or more pills in one gulp type deal, and not with water, but with 1% milk so they do not upset my tummy). Took me a while to be able to take a handfull at once, but now its second nature to do so.

Well take care

WOW NYXWOLFWALKER, that's a lot of pills to keep straight!! Do you have any room for food after you take them all? I think if I took all those by the time I got them all down with the water it took to swollow them I wouldn't have any room left to eat.. LOL

Were you able to go off the metformin because of all the others?

Luvhummingbirds - I totally understand about the brokeness. I found my cinnamon at walgreens, and it seemed pretty cheap. I think I paid 7 something for 100 pills, or something like that.

I feel your pain about the birthday money - mine went to bills. emoticon

I just started taking the cinnamon supplements too - I'm not sure if they're helping much, but I've managed to keep losing weight, so they must not be hurting.

Nat, what I've found with BCP's is that they trick your body into thinking you're preggy. So, you get all those funky weird preggy hormones (oh I was the evil one) and I even got morning sickness from them (this was when I was a senior in HS, I had to control my periods withBCP's because I'd have them every other week...blech) Amazing how the symptoms are there even when you're 16-18 and no one realized what was wrong.

thank you all ladies for helping me out with this BCP. I am not comfortable completely with having my hormones being manipulated like that either....I just have to deal with it I guess.

thanks again,

Curves - I had trouble with Ortho too. I was taking the Ortho Tricyclen Low for awhile (insurance covered that one but not Yasmine), and it was awful for me. I just didn't feel good at all while I was on that. As soon as my insurance added Yasmin to their plan, I was on the phone begging for a new prescription. Once I got back on Yasmin, my cramps got so much better, I was back to having a "clockwork" period, and I just felt better. I just felt "off" while I was on Ortho...my general practitioner (who doesn't prescribe the bcp's) said it was cause the ortho didn't have enough hormones or the right combination for me...because of the pcos. All I know is, 1 month on Yasmin - and I was back to "normal"...whatever that is.

Nat,

I think that the BCP is something that people react to in *very* different ways. I have used the BCP several times since my diagnosis. The only negative side effect I have seen is that the BCP raises my blood pressure slightly. This is not a problem now that my weight is down, but was a problem when I was heavier.

The first time I used the BCP was from 1999 to 2003. I stopped near the end of 2003 because we were trying to conceive--which we did immediately. One of the doctors that I worked with during my initial diagnosis told me that my best window might be right after ceasing BCP because my body would still be in the habit of having regular menstrual cycles.

I recently (April) asked my OB to write me a new script for BCP because I noticed that my weight loss hit a plateau when I went back to my normal (read: absent) cycle after a few months of strangely regular cycles. When I was having regular cycles, I was losing weight really well. When I went back to my "normal," even though I was eating and exercising the same--and eventually exercising *more*--my weight loss slowed to almost nothing. Since I have been back on the BCP, my weight loss has continued to be steady. Of course, my inner scientist was on holiday, because I started all of my supplements at around the same time as I started back on BCP--so I don't know how much of the effect is from BCP and how much is from supplements. However, since I was losing weight steadily when I was having regular cycles and *not* taking supplements, I think that's a piece of the puzzle for me.

I have had no emotional side effects, just the physical blood pressure reaction, and that's mediated as my weight goes down.

So, there's another side of the story.

Nat,

I have had no adverse side-effects with the Spiro. I did *pee a lot* when I first started it (it's a "water pill"), but that's gotten better, too.

I was on Ortho Tri-Cyclen BCP, and I will NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER (!) go back on it EVER again! I speak so strongly about this because it did so much damage to me emotionally, psychologically, and physiologically that I would take every symptom of PCOS over the Ortho pill. It changed me, it really did - and it was not for the better. I damaged and ruined relationships with the way I acted on that pill. I hate that I acted that way even now, 6 years later.

Perhaps I am not typical, but I cannot recommend *that particular* BCP.

hello everyone,

I have a question about birth control pills. I have never been on them before, but am not rethinking this whole med thing.
so lots of my friends have taken BCPs in the past and gone a little crazy, crazy mood swings, etc. I would like to avoid this as much as possible since I already am not so good in that area. can y'all tell me what has been the meds with the least side effects?

thanks,

nat

As far as my medication goes.

Prescription
1700 mg metformin

Over the Counter
Prenatal vitamin (I'm TTC)

That is all. And I hope it is all, but I guess if it doesn't work, I'll be trying something else.

Curves,

I'm feeling your pain about the typo--it's not bugging me, but if it were mine it'd make me nutty! Here's what I take:

Prescription:
Metformin (1000mg)
Spironalactone (25 mg)
BCP

OTC:
Multivitamin
Chromium (250 mg)
B-Complex
Cinnamon (1000 mg)

Both over-the-counter:
- Pre-natal vitamins. (I am not pregnant or TTC, but apparently the combination is better than the regular multi-vitamins.)
- Iron supplement. (Not sure if it's related to the PCOS, but it was the gynecologist who recommended it.)

I am currently on the Nuvaring (birth control). When I do have periods and am not on the Nuvaring they are unbearable. Also, whenever I've gone off it I've gained weight.

As I've listed in other posts I tired Metformin, but my doctors think it might have trigged photosensitivity (sun allergy) so I'm off of it at the moment.

I need to the do the vitamin and omega supplements, but haven't yet!

I'm currently on:

Metformin (Fortamet - extended release) - I'm currently taking 2000 mg a day - just started a few weeks ago.
Omacor (omega 3 acid ethyl esters) - I believe these are 900 mg each and I take 4 a day

Both are prescription.

I was also recommended these vitamins and will start taking them once I get my butt over to the store to pick them up:

calcium/magnesium
chromium - 250 mg a day
alpha lipoic acid - 100 mg a day
