I also started out on the Yasmin and gained an extra 30 pounds in two months. I expressed my concern to my Urogynecologist (specialist in Urology and Gynecology) and he changed my BC pills twice after that...trying them out 2 months at a time. The best for me has been Loestrin24. It has much lower estrogen levels than other birth controls and has really been beneficial in combating my PCOS. I naturally have really high testosterone levels (thanks to genetics) so the higher estrogen in those other pills was totally screwing up my hormones...I was having hot flashes and all and I'm only 26! Anyway, I don't have the IR like a lot of others with PCOS do, so I'm only on the BC. Hopefully your doc will be able to figure out the best med combination for you. It's really about trial and error...took me almost a year to finally find the right meds, but now I'm able to lose weight again and am no longer in pain.

When I was first diagnosed, I was put on Yasmin and the dr wanted to put me on Metformin, but I refused. My dad and my grandmother were put on it when they were first diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and both had the same reaction: explosive diarrhea. Because both members of my family had the same extreme reaction, I opted not to take it.

With the Yasmin, I had regular periods as long as I was on the pills, but when I went off, they stopped completly. I also gained a ton of weight while I was on it. I was on it for 3 years before I lost my health insurance. During that time I was also diagnosed with depression and was on anti-depressants for the last 9 months I was on the Yasmin.
After I went off the Yasmin and Zoloft and got a new job, I lost 60 lbs and started having regular periods. They say Yasmin doesn't cause weight gain and that's a load of bull! I gained 70 lbs from the time I started on it to the time I stopped. And every time I went off of it (I lost insurance every summer when I was not in college)I lost 5-15 lbs.
I've never been on the other meds you mentioned, but now that I've been able to lose significant weight my PCOS is undercontrol with out medication of any sort. I still have another 20 lbs before I'm at my ideal weight, but I'm getting there.

:o) the hair on your head won't fall out from and anti androgen. Actually.. the male pattern baldness,(or hair thinning) is another symptom it will help with, along with the extra body hair. It's all about that extra testosterone.

I am planning a fast the night before my dr's appt. next week, even though I wasn't asked to fast, I'm doing it so that I can request another blood test. I was tested for perimenopause twice, but the works came back fine. My OB tested my DHEA and testosterone and both of those came back quite high....the Yasmin (birth control) is also an antiandrogen. So, it looks like I'm getting two anti androgens (hopefully the hair on my head won't fall out too!) I swelled up for the first few days taking the Aldactone, but I think it's because I had to switch from the hydrochlorothiazide (a diuretic that I was taking to treat abnormal edema) and my body needed to adjust to the differences. If I didn't take the hydrochlorothiazide every day, I would put on 5-10 lbs. in 24 to 48 hours. I do not want to weigh myself again until I FINALLY have my period. Hopefully the Yasmin will help that get started.....If not, I heard I can request a Provera to jumpstart the period.

Goals!
I will reward myself each time I reach a 5% weight loss of my current weight!

Spironolactone (marketed under the trade names Aldactone, Novo-Spiroton, Spiractin, Spirotone, Verospiron or Berlactone) is a diuretic and is used as an antiandrogen. Well..so much for my spelling, I checked after my post to you, seems as though you actually already take this..(Aldactone). By again.

Hi, I started on Metformin 3 months ago. I originally believed it was to assist with weight loss in helping to regulate the IR, which most of us with PCOS have to deal with. However, I soon realized it helps with much more. After about 5 weeks i began having symptoms of an oncoming menstrual cycle, and low and behold I did in fact get a real period, the first in 6 months. since that time i feel more "myself". Emotionally and physically. i don't have the severe carb cravings and I'm able to stay focused on a better IR eating plan and I've been exercising more,(because my mood has lifted).. People have noticed that i "look good". I feel less bloated, and have begun to lose weight. I can not take Yasmin, as i have a heart cond. and had a heart attack in 2007. You may notice in my profile that I'm 50 years of age, however I'm not in menopause according to my blood work. i do not suffer from the superfluous hair problem, but have heard and read that Spirolactone (sp?) is helpful with that. I also used to have puffy ankles..now i do not. Your doctor probably didn't prescribe Metformin because you don't have IR, but..i would want another fasting blood test. I'm guessing you have trouble loosing weight, (you're here), if you do in fact have IR you would need to diet differently. I was on a low fat/high fiber diet and exercise regime for the year after my heart attack and gained weight before being diagnosed with PCOS..now I am on the IR diet. Best of luck to you, Chris

What is Metformin? What does it do for you? What or which symptoms does Metformin treat specifically?

Currently, I'm on Yasmin birth control (however, I have not had my period for 4 months and 2 days....I've only started the pill last week and today is day 9), I'm on Levothyroxin (but I'm not sure if I should be on it because I think my doctor is treating low-thyroid symptoms because my #'s were in the normal range, however, a few points lower than when it was tested 2 years ago). I'm also on the generic form of Aldactone which is supposedly going to help the abnormal swelling in my hands, feet, and face and also used to treat hirsutism in women. Plus, I use the cream Vaniqua on my face to help reduce the hair growth. I've been taking the thyroid medication for three months, the rest of the meds I'm on day 9....I do not have insulin resistance and my cholesterol is a little high, but nothing to write home about. I read that insulin resistance does not CAUSE PCOS, but is a symptom of PCOS in many PCOS sufferers.

I want to know why a doctor has prescribed Metformin to many of you? AND what you have gotten out of it? I'm afraid of all of the meds I'm taking. I WANT to be able to lose weight with the efforts I'm making and to stop the hair growth on my body. My 10 year old DD just found a couple of small patches of BLACK BLACK hair on my upper back, it's grotesque!!! I'm seeing a new doctor next week and I want to have all the details nailed down before I go in. Thanks girls! Peace.
