The blood work I had around 2008 showed my cholesterol at 290. Then in 2011, when I got serious about lowering my cholesterol, it is now 186! I have been using Rice Bran Oil for all of my cooking, I try to eat oatmeal by Nature's Path with flax seed everyday and it seems to have done the trick. This last blood work in Jan, the doctor said he was very happy with my results. Granted I was eating wild Alaskan salmon 3-4 times a week, stopped using butter. However, now I have begun to use butter again...

Nuts, bacon, and cheese are on my must have list but I make sure I use portion control because I tend to go crazy with them, especially the nuts.

Your doctor sounds like the typical doctor from my early years in nursing. They all jumped on low fat, low salt, low cholesterol and later embraced the statins. I refuse to take them.

It can take weeks to get in the right groove, finding what works and what doesn't. I found nuts to be too deadly for my weight loss so those are gone. I ditched the cashews, mixed nuts, for a small piece of cheese and small glass of wine for a snack and I'm back on the losing curve. I won't give up bacon. My results are slow because I'm sedentary due to needing total knee replacement but it is encouraging at least, to see the 1/4 to 1/2 pound loss daily now.

I'm curious to see what my blood test labs will reveal next week. All my doc cares about is cholesterol, and handing out her low fat, high carb diet plan. She is a statin guru but I only take them a week or two out before my blood testing. LOL.. It's proven how they can destroy your joints and muscles. But big pharma always pushes their product and they've never heard of Dr. Mercola.

On a closing note, I've heard a few good things about taking 5-HTP as a supplement. I've noticed a decreased appetite and a happier disposition since I started taking them a week ago. You can't take it though if you're already on anti-depressants or mao's....

I was always hungry on low fat too from low blood sugar. My former doctor's solution was to have me consume more carbs. LOL.

Whenever I was on a low-fat diet, regardless of the program, I was so hungry I could eat the furniture. With lower-carb, I'm much more satisfied and in control of my eating.

LHAAS8, we have all been there. I'm a nurse and for years we all pushed low fat diets on people and made a lot of people sick due to it. Every day someone adds something worthwhile to the body of knowledge about what our bodies need to be healthy. It's hard to keep up sometimes.

Your best bet would be to go back and read the book for whichever low-carb plan you're following. I have tried both Atkins and South Beach plans and I prefer South Beach. But everyone is different, and you'll find what works for you.

Thank you everyone and I'm sorry. I think I had preconceived notions that I knew what I was doing but I was wrong. Then I felt like everyone was pointing at my wrong. Sorry again. Thank you for all of your support. Tomorrow is a new day and all will be right with the world.

Don't feel ashamed. There's a big learning curve when it comes to changing the way we eat. One of the best things about sites like Sparkpeople is that there is a lot of help and encouragement from people who have gone through the same situations and made the same mistakes. Every day I'm on this website, whether it's reading an article, blog, or message board, I learn something new. Sometimes it pertains to me, other times it doesn't, but I always learn something here.

Atkins and other diet companies make money on their products, so they advertize them as being a part of their program. But, I don't think Dr. Atkins had any branded products at first, just his program.

I'm 60 years old, and I've been on more diets than I can count, since the early 1980s, some of them pretty weird, in retrospect. But, I've learned from my mistakes, and now know enough to stick to a reasonable eating program.

I just wish I had come to my senses when I was a lot younger!

There is no need to feel discouraged and ashamed. You asked for help and we tried to be as honest as we could be. Most of us have eaten a lot worse. At one point I ate fast food for at least 6 meals a week. That is how we became obese and developed serious medical conditions. We are all here to learn. We didn't discover all of this information over night but learned it through trial and error and from getting advice from others. I had mentors. It's a learning curve. We all go through it. Some of us pick it up faster than others but those of us who succeed finally get it.

I think you have a good idea already of what you need to do. I agree with most of what everyone else said too. I also would encourage you to eat less processed meat and more fresh meat. Protein Power does a good job of helping people figure out their protein requirements. I agree that 10 servings of bacon is too much. On the majority of low carb diets serving sizes are encouraged with the idea that if you need more than a serving size to be satisfied you can have more. Cheese stalls a lot of people. A serving is 1 ounce or 1/4 cup and you ate 3/4 cup of cheese at a time. Shakes and bars should be kept to a minimum and used for special occasions, not as meals. And, personally, I don't see that you are going to lose anything on 2000 or 3000 calories a day unless you really have a lot to lose and a high BMI. I don't recommend that people of a low carb diet follow sparkpeople's caloric recommendations. Your vegetable intake was really good on many days though - varied and colorful.

I agree on eating real food. I ate 2 slices of pizza and 24 ozs of Pepsi on Sunday, and I got back on track yesterday and lost 1.4 today.

I think that you are losing DESPITE eating these fake foods, and if you just stuck to meat, fish, fowl, eggs, fats, vegetables, cheese, nuts, seeds, and the occasional fruit, you would get back into ketosis within 24 hours, and see significant weight loss.

Besides the frankenfoods, I hope the bacon is nitrate free, and wonder why you eat only egg whites. By cutting fat, you are sabotaging yourself. This is really a high fat diet, since you are cutting carbs, and can't add in much more protein. The higher the ratio of fat to carbs you eat, the faster you will lose, as long as you aren't eating more protein than you need.

I agree with Azure-Sky about the bars and shakes. When I was doing a strict Atkins I was loosing UNTIL I decided to use the bars and shakes... then everything came to a screeching halt!! Real food is the answer, and if you are doing the real Atkins Low Carb quit counting the calories.

Ditto on the bacon too!

I hate to say this because it sounds like you move a lot at work, but work walking workouts has never worked for me either. You should focus on a real aerobic workout, even just walking 1xday for 30 minutes helps move the weight.

Good Luck!

Personally, I would dump the Atkins bars and shakes, and opt for real food.

Also, do you really need 10 slices of bacon for breakfast? Just because Atkins allows it, doesn't mean it's right for you. Some bacon brands are loaded with sugar, some brands of sausage also.

I would suggest you track your sodium. Others may not agree with me, but I gain water weight when I have a lot of high sodium foods. I could easily gain 5 pounds just from eating that much bacon, because I'm salt-sensitive.

What kind of exercise do you do during the week? Are you sedentary during the week and only work out on the weekends? If so, I wouldn't add calories on the days you work out.

Unless you are very tall, I would think that your current daily calorie intake is too high for weight loss. Try lowering your daily calories by 250 to start and see what happens. In addition, you might want to cut down on the meat that you are consuming at night time and try to eat a lighter dinner.

So I'm starting back on induction and I think in my head, I am on phase 2 or 3 because the weight isn't coming off. I know it takes a few days/weeks for your body to react to changes but I think its more me. I have shared my food and fitness pages and I think my issue is that I'm eating meats that have carbs, and whipped cream. I think I need to get more onto real foods and stick it out for a while. I know this is a transition.

Can anyone help me though? On weekends, I do crazy workouts at work, 300 floors/45,000 steps. How many extra should I eat that day? SP wants me to eat 3000 cal normally though I think that halts the process. Advice, anyone?
