Temptation is my downfall. Out of sight, out of mind works for me.

The hypoglycemia explains the 30gms of carbs. I have hypoglycemia too. It's imperative that you really watch your carb intake and space them out and always eat protein with them.

There is a place similar to that in Pittsburgh...really authentic Italian deli/grocery that I have to go into. I'll let you know about it sometime next week.

I am hypoglycemic and am on a very low dose of simvistatin (5 mg) for my cholesterol. I also have arthritis in my knee and shoulders and I'm sure losing the weight will make it easier on my joints. I believe for all those reasons she felt that my losing weight will help in all these areas.

I have to fight going to the Hill every time I'm in St. Louis as I always want to go to Viviano's grocery. I could spend all day in there.

Morticiaadams you are making me hungry just reading about the salami and fresh warm Italian bread. It's the best. We had a bakery around the corner where I lived in Brooklyn and I stopped there after work every night. They also made their own mozzarella.

All of the advice is so great. I guess deep in my heart and belly I know the right things to eat and not to eat....but the will is weak.

I'm going to try and log in every day and hopefully having all of you to talk with will be the answer to my prayers. emoticon emoticon emoticon

I think Haluko is onto something in that you should probably ask your M.D. why he recommends 30gms of carbs a day. I always think it's a great idea to ask a doctor why he feels this is the best diet for you. It makes it easier to stay on the diet if you know what the benefit it. As a nurse, I usually saw really low carb diets prescribed for people who had certain medical conditions like diabetes, hypoglycemia, out of control hypertension, lipid problems, morbid obesity, etc. Carb restriction is needed to reduce elevated triglycerides. Many M.D.s today though prescribe low carb diets for other reasons as several studies have found that is initially more effective than many main stream diets. I ended up on a lower carb due to the fact that the former diets I was on, which involved restricted calories/sodium,/fat/cholesterol, didn't work for me and actually made me worse.

I think a good relationship with food is essential to a balanced, healthy life. My heritage is Spanish I am ALL too aware of the feasts we enjoy in our celebrations and our connection with the plentiful harvest which is where the immigrant thoughts of ' you are always too skinny ' come from.

Yes, ALL of us have different nutritional requirements. I am a 49 year old woman who logs in 25 miles of hilly bike riding per week, walks and does small weights when I think I am being sedentary. Yes, we are ALL different. And, yes these are life choices. Just like participating in this group is a life choice.

I choose to eat the foods I like in moderation [ remember balance ]. The times with my family and friends are precious to me so I choose to enjoy those as well.

I think being mindful of your goals and eating thoughtfully will ensure you enjoy the holidays in a healthy manner.

Maybe something to think about is why your doctor has recommended such a stringent calorie restriction? and more importantly what part of your life is out of balance which stops your weight loss goals. Most food issues have an emotional component. For this post the holidays can trigger ALL sorts of thoughts and feelings that we try to make better with food.

HAPPY Holiday Season!

Betty is right. Calories and carbs still count no matter what celebration you are having. On holidays I still manage to usually stay under my daily carb allotment and calorie allotment but I have a pretty liberal carb allotment of 150 net carbs and I seldom if ever get close to that unless I'm cheating big time and off my diet completely. When you revamp the recipes to nix the added sugar you save a lot of calories and carbs anyway.

I keep my carbs at less than 50 grams per day - or 5-15% of my daily totals. Now, there are days that I go over and days that I'm under. But I've lost food cravings, sugar cravings, etc.

I also have to keep my calories at less than 1200 because I won't lose if I don't. I think age has to do with that and at 74 my body likes to keep what it has I guess. I used to be able to lose weight really fast "in my younger days"

And like some of you have said, it's different for all of us. I don't think that under 30 is unreasonable though, at least for awhile. If... if the foods eaten are high quality and unprocessed foods.. The carbs eaten should be from veggies, not from grains.. But.. this is my opinion..

I totally agree with Kierae. Most doctors in general are not totally thrilled with real low carb diets so when they tell you they want you on 30gms a day they really mean it. LOL.

Sodium is both easy and difficult to control. Easy in that is it mostly in processed foods so if you give them up your sodium level automatically is good. Difficult because few people really want to give up processed foods. LOL.

Unless you are Italian or close to them you may not be aware of the particular challenges associated with holidays. I can relate. Everyone there is trying to feed you and everyone thinks you are skinny no matter how unskinny you are. LOL. Let's face it, most people aren't having antipasto and pasta for Thanksgiving unless they are Italian. If you can I would recommend passing on the pasta or at least just eating a couple of bites. A couple of toasted ravioli satisfies me. The same with the breads and salami. Of course I don't follow my own advice at all on the latter. If I'm anywhere near high quality Italian salami it will end up in my stomach. When I was pregnant with my son my poor grandfather had to drive 50 miles to bring me a load (that is not the misprint on the word loaf - I was brought a load) of Italian bread from my favorite Italian bakery every week and some of my favorite salami. I try to use portion control any more though and have a tiny piece of things like pannetone and I savor it. Portion control - you really have to use it with Italian food.

I think a healthy adult should strive for no less than 120 grams of carbs per day" - actually this is a fallacy. Every person has a difference tolerance for carbs. So what may work for you may not work for me. 120 grams of carbs could be considered very high for a person who has sensitivity or can't lose weight at that number. Focusing on the healthy carbs while traveling is good - the lower glycemic fruits and plenty of high fiber low GI veggies. Avoiding the breads, pastas and such or at the very least eating them sparingly if possible. It's a vacation but it doesn't have to mean diving mouth first into all the stuff you normally don't eat at home. Diabetics still have to follow their diet regimen when on vacation - look at it thru those eyes.

Get those walks in and enjoy the holiday!

I'd recommend that you have access to plenty of water especially while traveling. It will probably mean more bio breaks, but that's a good opportunity to get out and walk and avoid DVT.

Have a fun and safe trip!

You're welcome Glofry :-)

OK . Yes, for short term reducing the carbs will probably help.

I am doing the 5/2 diet to lower my glucose levels, cholesterol and lose weight. My goal is 30lbs. by Spring. I watched the video below from the BBC. I found it to have some useful information:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01lxyzc

I hope you have a wonderful time with your family.

Take care,
Be Well :)

I don't think that she is meaning long term. She said for a month or two just to get my weight down so my joints don't hurt so much and I can increase my exercise. I find that I cannot eat many fruits because of their sugar content. I tried to eat at least 3 fruits and 4 to 5 veggies a day and my weight wouldn't budge.

I know you are right. I just need to eat in moderation and get as much activity in as possible.

Thank you so much, Haluko. You have a blessed holiday.

Not sure you can gain 15 lbs. in one week :DD I know your concerns are not a joking matter but if you try to eat healthy I think you can enjoy your family time and when you return get back to your regime. Maybe try loggin into to sparkspeople.com at least once a day and try to keep track of your food intake. Not so much deprive yourself just look at what you are eating :)

btw - are you certain the doctor said no more than 30 grams of total carbs a day? Is this a long term diet? I am not an MD but I would question this amount of carbs longterm. Our bodies need balanced nutrients to function properly and I think a healthy adult should strive for no less than 120 grams of carbs per day.

My body loses weight when I lower my carb intake too. And, I do lower the carbs for short periods yet I try to reduce what I call the [ false carbs...the breads, pastas, processed foods ] and eat plenty of the fruit and veggies.

I think I am losing weight my shorts are looser :-))

I've managed to lose about 15 lbs over the last 2 months and have worked hard at exercising and trying to control my calories. Last week my doctor suggested/recommended that I eat a diet comprised of no more than 30 carbs a day. I also have to be careful with my sodium intake so that has been a struggle. But, my big concern now is that we leave for the holidays starting this Friday 4:00 am and will be traveling to Pittsburgh for the weekend and then on to New York where I will celebrate Thanksgiving with my wonder Italian family.

While this is a joyful time and I am so excited to see everyone, I'm really worried that I will gain back some (or all) of the weight that I've lost celebrating with my family.

We will have lots of time in the car so that means limited to no exercise opportunities.

If anyone has some tried and true advice, please HELP!!!!!
