There are recipes for homemade hummus on SparkRecipes. It might be worth checking a few of them out.

Morticia, it's worth it if you can find a brand or recipe that you like. There are lots out there that are just gross. My favorite is Athenos Original.

I didn't like the hummus I tried.

Cheese and nuts are also a source of carbohydrate. Don't be fooled into thinking they are a freebie. I always put on weight with nuts. The same goes for hummus which is a carbohydrate source.

Keep an eye your sodium intake too, cheese and nuts contain a lot of sodium. Especially if you are eating nuts that have been salted.
And mixing up you exercise routine might help. Don't always do the same stuff in the gym, check you intensity, and if you walk, try adding a backpack with a little weight in it.

I need to keep my calorie count an average of about 1200, no matter if I'm doing low carb or low calorie or anything else. I'm 5'5", however I think age (74) has a lot to do with it all too and I'm not as active as I was in my younger days. However... I can get by with a few more calories if I'm super low carb, although I try not to.

I really don't think anyone should limit their calories that much without being under a doctor's care. I saw way too many people end up in the hospital due to it.

Ditto on the recomendation of cycling the carbs and calories. And depending upon your exercise level, I would be wary of eating consistently on the lower end of your calories. It can and will work against your metabolism. Besides who wants to exist on 800-1000 calories??

Be sure and keep the cheese and nuts to one serving a day. You may have to average around 1200 a day to lose if you are only 5 feet tall. Trying changing your work out routine. Carb cycle and calorie cycle.

Eye opening for me too. My doctor stressed that I have to drink lots of water, but didn't tell me that dehydration slows metabolism. Makes sense though. Can't wait to tell DH who's working on losing 40 pounds and hates to drink water.

He also recommended LaCroix water if I wanted something carbonated. Haven't tried it yet though.

I'm only 5'2" so I can't lose if my calories go above 1500 and I'm carb sensitive too. Doctor has me on a gluten-free, dairy-free and sugar-free (no artificial sweeteners) elimination diet for 30 days with very limited food choices. Then I'll get to see what foods destabilize my weight when I start adding more to my diet.

Hang in there and keep us posted. You've had great success, so don't forget to enjoy all that you've accomplished.

LYNDALOVES2HIKE:THANK YOU!!!
Everything is normal I had a physical 5 months ago came back fine. I thought it was my thyroid too but doc said no you are probably just sensitive to carbs..which I already knew. That's when I got back on the low carb bandwagon.

Aaaahaaaaaa WOWWW Really...never realized that. I'm stunned and glad at the same time. I will certaintly be drinking more water. I always hear drink more water, drink more water but didn't know why water is so vital and the significant role it plays. Thank you for opening my eyes up a bit wider.

I definitely will keep you posted on my progress.
Thanks again! : )

Congrats on losing 80 lbs and keeping it off - that's amazing!! I also know how frustrating it can be to work hard and not see results - yikes.....but if you haven't had a complete physical for awhile, you might want to get that done. Low thyroid, slow heart rate, too much cortisol and many other things can affect our weight.

Also, DEHYDRATION SLOWS METABOLISM - I put that in caps because a lot of people don't realize it! The body isn't able to cleanse and detoxify itself without sufficient fluids and hormones get messed up. We don't always know we are dehydrated because we get so used to the symptoms but one thing that happens is the blood thickens up and flows much slower through the body, slowing everything else along with it. I was told by a specialist that not getting enough water can actually slow metabolism 5% or more - that's huge!

Not getting enough calories can do the same from what I've been told, although I'm certainly not an expert on what numbers are best for individuals. At any rate, try getting water into your system for a couple of weeks and see if that helps. If you don't like the flavor of tap water, get a filter - if you still don't like it, squeeze a little lemon juice into it. Even if you have to FORCE yourself to drink, it's worth it and after a short time, your body will adapt to the flavor and it won't be so difficult. Stay away from sodas or flavored water in bottles becasue even the 'diet' versions can stall weight loss from what I've been told.

Keep us posted on your progress!

ADAPTABLE_ELLEN: There are days I don't have much of an appetite and the min is 800 calories but that isn't that often .. but then other days I aim for at least 1000-1400 calories because I know if I don't my body will go into starvation mode. I'm only 5'0 and about 1400 calories I'm maxed out to full capacity. My source of fat comes from lots of egg, olive oil, any kind of nuts, avocado, hummus, cheese.

Yea very frustrating Ughh. : / hope that works for you! Thanks for your input!!! ..A good reminder is to make sure I eat enough yep.. jotting down a to do list for this week, things I need to do. I hope I figure this out quick crossing fingers.

MOONCHILD1949- No signs of a food sensitivity or allergy. But it's not a bad idea to get tested..hmm. I have a habit of eating the same thing all the time. My nutrionist did say eliminate the cheese. That could be the reason for the stall. Thanks for your input!!!

Are you getting enough calories? How many calories per day?

What is your source for fat? Are you getting enough?

I know how frustrating this is. Menopause has kicked my butt, so I'm on a doctor prescribed program out of sheer desperation.

Could you have a food sensitivity or allergy? Have you tried eliminating wheat and/or dairy to see if it helps? It seems to for a lot of people. Hope you get some answers!

Not new to low carb I lost 80 lbs 13yrs ago and managed to keep it off but I have 30 lbs remaining to get to my goal weight. I yo-yoed for a bit and stopped doing low carb for a while. Back at it again for a few months now have lost only 5lbs, and several inches. Went from a snug size 14 to a lose fitting 12. I excercise 5x a week, 2x weight training with a personal trainer and then 3 days of cardio. It seems I hit a bump in the road and I'm plateuing. I saw my nutrionist last night, I see her every two weeks and she tells me I maintained in weight and only lost a quarter inch off my chest : ( WTH... I'm beyond frustrated. All my hard work didn't pay off I don't understand. What could have I done differently? One thing I know I was bad with water consumption. I only drink water when I'm about to work out..not good so I'm going to up the water. Any suggestions on how to break the plateu and start losing lbs instead of inches? Oh btw I allow myself 1 cheat day to trick my body but that isn't helping either apparently.I really want to see the numbers go down. Soo bummed.
