As a former coronary nurse, I find stories like this very depressing. Dying from heart failure isn't fun and most older people won't get a new heart like Dick Cheney.

Vicki -- I'm right there with you on the dh not doing as he should. Mine is diabetic, had a heart attack in 2000 followed by an angioplasty, open heart surgery in 2010, defib implanted in 2011 and still won't eat right and still smokes.

After the 2000 event, I gained alot of weight and my hair turned grey from worry - always watching his every step and wondering when he was going to collapse. I was afraid to leave his side. After watching him all those years and especially after the 2010 open heart procedure, I decided it was my responsibility to take care of myself and his to take care of himself. I'm doing a great job on me!!!! him, not so much but as much as I care, I can't change him - he has to do it himself and honestly, I don't think he ever will.

Take care of yourself -- you are worth it.

That is really sad. I'm glad that we didn't wait until it was too late.

I drink diet fountain pop and one of the ladies at the gas station by my house has been my cashier for years, well she has mentioned more then once to me that she is diabetic.
I have talked to her over the years about low carb and even spark people.

She was pretty over weigh and a very large tummy....well she passed away 2 days ago.

It makes me so sad for her family, she always told me that she was going to do something and she was looking into it, over and over again.....

Now it's to late and her family will miss her as well as I....too sad.

Sometimes they eventually come around. There is no food worth dying for. My dad eats fairly healthy now.

My dad has had a defibrillator long enough to have to have one replaced. You are right, you need to take care of yourself and he needs to eat healthy as well.

I'll be ok. I'm back on track now. I was trying more or less to put me on the back burner til we find out if hubby needs a defibulator ( we find out tomorrow), but I realize if I don't take care of me, I won't be in any shape to take care of him, if need be.

If you weigh and measure your food, get your exercise in, eat completely on plan, monitor how your clothes fit, etc. you may not have to weigh that often but most of us fail in one of more of these areas. Personally, when I don't weigh, I regret it.

Accountability can go a long way to keeping us focused but I agree with the concept to avoid fixating on the numbers - in addition to the 'traditional measurements' tracking, I think it's good to set other goals that don't involve a scale or measuring tape - how do you feel? How fast can you walk or run a mile? Did you try something new this week? How many laps can you swim before you're out of breath? Do your feet and/or back and/or knees feel better this week? Can you lift heavier items now? How long can you stand on one foot? and so forth. Whatever seems to match your lifestyle.

Also, keep track of other ways to assess 'beauty' - is your skin clearer now that you're drinking more water? How does your hair look - does the style flatter your features? Are your fingernails well-groomed? Stuff like that can help us appreciate measures of beauty other than clothing size and help improve our overall outlook on life.

Whatever you do to supplement the traditional measurements to keep track of your progress, stick with it!

Weighing yourself on a regular basis and doing measurements really does keep you on track and accountable. You don't have to obsess over it (ie some folks can't do daily) but honestly putting blinders on and declaring you aren't using the scale ever again can bite ya in the backside. It can be too easy for the weight to creep back on.

I like living. I have sometimes been wildly, despairingly, acutely miserable, racked with sorrow, but through it all I still know quite certainly that just to be alive is a grand thing. Agatha Christie
