That sounds like a cool medical office. I would love the relaxing therapy.

We worked all weekend at my MIL's. No rest but we have to get it done.

We have United Health Care, should be called United Unhealth Care. Our deductible is high, with little chiro or PT coverage and no acupuncture coverage at all.

After two adjustments, I think I'm seeing some improvement. It's a high tech office. A computer screen on the wall shows your scans and they adjust you by touching trigger points. It's very relaxing because there's no bone cracking.

I hope everyone is having a good weekend. The wind spoiled our day at the archery range yesterday and it's only supposed to get worse. So much for my barbecue plans as well. The fire danger is extreme and we're already having grass fires.

I have a friend who sees an acupuncturist and he does her more good than anyone.

My DH is seeing a chiropractor / acupuncturist to help relieve pain from lumbar spine degeneration. He also goes to PT, but I think the chiro/acu helps more. Insurance covers it. You might look into that.

I hope the chiropractor is able to help both of you. I've never been to one but my neighbor down the road is one and I've heard good things about them.

I turn 60 this year too. I can hardly believe it. LOL.

I've feeling a little better today. I could get some work done around the house for a change. My hubby and I are still working day and night to settle my MIL's estate. Very tiring but we hope it is over soon. I'm still getting in 15,000 steps on most days.

You have been so supportive to you family and a blessing to them. I hope you will have more time to spend on yourself again.

Actually pretty well. DH got his first testosterone shot today and we both started seeing a chiropractor this week. DH's neck is right on the edge of stage 3 degeneration and his hormone levels were the lowest the doctor has ever seen. I'm hoping this will give him a new lease on life. He turned 60 last month.

How are you doing? And the family? Still walking?

Thanks Morticia. I really need to be here and I missed you and your words of wisdom.

Isn't CW "conventional wisdom"?? I'm not positive, but that's always what I thought it was.

I'm just a lowly electronics engineer, but even I would question publishing data on a study that uses just 54 people. How can that be statistically significant? So yes, I heartily agree with both of you.

I've been MIA so what's CW?

I enthusiastically agree with your take on studies these days. So far as animal models, IMO those studies only serve to pose hypotheses which thereafter need to be tested in human subjects. We may have similar physiologies, but similar just isn't enough when you're discussing health.

The sad truth is that even respected universities performing research are so dependent upon their funding - it's so difficult to come by - that they are more willing now to approach their topics with bias. When some huge bioscience big-ag, big-pharm is funding a project, those commercial entities naturally want to support their market. It can be difficult in the financially lean research environment to be immune to pressures (even unstated) exerted by your funders.

Even for those who can afford, have the moral courage, and the proper research skills, to perform studies - research can be confounded by SO many things. No matter what you try to filter out, there may be some variable that never raised its head until long after the data were collected. Even if good data are collected, it then resides upon the researcher(s) to apply the right and intelligent criteria to come to any useful conclusion. Those of us reading the proposal and skipping to that conclusion have little concept of how much is involved in the paragraphs between those sections of the paper.

I also have background in the sciences and medicine. I was born into a medical household; I learned to read on medical journals. I didn't realize this was not the norm until I reached public education! LOL Thereafter, I've spent 30 years in a medical field. I don't say this to add any weight to my opinions - I'm just saying that I have some background for the "feel" of a thing I may read, and I understand the inner workings of the healthcare business better than some may. I don't like all I understand. That said, there are some good individuals out there; you just have to use judgment to find them. Sort of like shopping: you check the labels and taste test.

I simply object to those who accept CW without applying brain cells, and who are more swayed by public opinion and how they're perceived by their peers (or people coming to them for their advice) refusing to give new studies and new information the proper import. I don't say I believe they should accept new information simply because it's there. But give it an unbiased exploration. Be professional. Don't just roll along in the old, comfortable, familiar rut because it's there.

As a nurse and former science major I never pay any attention to these tiny pseudoscience studies nor rat studies. To be honest the entire scientific method has been bastardized to the point where it's hardly used any more or even recognizable. I used to see what institution funded the study but now I'm to the point now where the first thing I look at in these studies is who funded the research and then often utter- there you go. Former universities that used to be the gold standard of research are being paid by manufacturers to do reverse hypotheses where they state a far-out conclusion and work backward to find an iota of "proof". Some former respectable universities have gotten a smack down due to this and rightfully so. I realize money is tight and research is expensive but risking your reputation for greasy, or maybe I should say sticky, dollar is hardly worth it. The sugar industry is funding a ton of studies these days because people are onto the fact that eating excess sugar isn't healthy for you and profits are dropping thus they have to make commercials telling you that HFCS is just sugar. My point exactly. No way can anything that spikes your blood sugar to this extent be good for you. It is sugar and sugar is what drives insulin and a host of problems related to it.

Another disappointing article on the evils of fats. The original link mentioned a "triple cheeseburger" ... and the article itself pictures a pepperoni pizza. The text only says that the test subjects (n=54) were fed a "high-fat" meal after a night's fast. Certainly didn't mention if any carbs were involved, although I may have missed it.

More fearmongering, alas.
Check it for yourself.

When I tested the link, it sent me to a login page. The site has good info, but evidently you have to register for their newsletter. I have gotten lots of applicable info from them, so it might be worth your while. It's a diabetic site, but "works" for low-carb also, most of the time. Except in this case.
