I do best when I track. This week I was tracking and I lost two pounds. It helps me stay awake and aware of what I'm eating.

Yes, I just use a lined notebook. You know, the ones that are on sale this time of year for like 10 cents.

Very much so. I am going to try and start working out 7 days a week for 30 minutes, I found this weekend when I didnt get to go work out because the center was closed that I didnt lose anything, but iv been losing about a 1 lb a day. Could be the meds or the food changes who knows, so I thought I throw some more workouts in.

70 pounds in 3 months is a lot of weight. You have to be very dedicated to achieve something like that. You definitely need all your tools in play.

I am super obsessive about tracking. If I haven't figured out the values then it doesn't go in my mouth. I have about three months to lose 70 lbs so I can have surgery done. I weight and measure everything before and after cooking as well, it annoys my family because I have to prepare my food separately but the way I look at it they aren't the ones who have been suffering with Endo and PCOS for the last ten years and FINALLY got a doctor to agree to do a hysterectomy, I aint wasting any time.

I track my eating daily. I tend to underestimate if I just guess. I try and keep the carbs down to "around" 30, but if the foods get up to 1200, then I quit eating for the day - even if it's only noon. Consequently, I try and be pretty careful to dole out my allowances over the course of the day.

I don't give myself any extra calories because I walk though, I just consider that a bonus and let it go. I learned tracking many (20+) when I was going to WW.

Tracking has helped me lose over ten pounds in ten weeks. If I don't track I eat much more. I am so grateful to finally have caught on and stuck with it. I do not want to ever stop. I used to think it was obsessive but it is not, it is caring about yourself. I think I got my scale at Price Chopper for about four dollars and it is super easy. It does not have the tare function but it has a knob which works the same way and is very simple. Mine weighs up to eighteen ounces. Love it! I used to abhor weighing and measuring but when you are trying to tow the line it is easy if you want it to lose weight with.

Where two or more are gathered there is love.

I have to track or I don't get anywhere. I tend to consume too many calories without some kind of monitoring system in place.

In my opinions, the tracking on what I am eating, really help me so much. Especially on how much carbohydrates I took for a day, I set my goals to keep carbs low due to my strange numbers of blood sugar. Yes I am pre-diabetic, I am looking for some excellent tools that help me--thank to SparkPeople for big help. Since I started on my sort of diet, Low Carb Diet and Paleo Diet--depending on what I feel like to do every day, I noticed my glucose monitor numbers became consistently same. It is good news to me. I am so happy to continue what I can track on what I am eating, then I can see how much calories I consumed and burned....

Yes, I do my best to keep my tracker as I can.

I haven't been recording my food over the last two weeks. I know I should and I just haven't felt like it. It is so useful to me. This encourages me to start again.

The weighing of my food is something that has really helped me. It has really taught me about what a true portion size is.

@SCORPIO2010 ~ in re: tare scales

I have one, and use it incessantly! Tare is a marvellous feature. As has already been described, if you put whatever sort of container you choose on the scale table, when you hit "tare" it "zeroes" the weight, so you're not measuring the container. Sometimes I just lay a paper towel or even a piece of plastic wrap on it. Other times I'll use a little disposable storage container, or (if your scale's range will include it) a regular plate. Then you're only getting the weight of the food you put in/on that container. It's wonderful.

I got mine (and I can't remember the brand now) on eBay, a couple years ago. It's actually a postal scale, and will measure in grams, ounces, and pounds. Being intended for something other than food, it will measure larger volumes than your usual food scale. It wasn't "cheap", but it didn't break the bank or anything. I think I still paid $20-ish for it. I think. I'm sure Amazon would have them, too. It was a good suggestion to check Wally World or KMart or Target, too. Since KMart seems to be faltering lately, they might be a good place to start - they might be cheaper trying to stay in the playing field.

A scale is a real necessity for anyone trying to keep to a diet, IMO. And the tare feature makes life so much easier. Best luck in your search!

When I first began this journey, it was just me and my endocrinologist! I didn't have the advantage of all of SP's great resources. I use the Nutrition Tracker obsessively! I also have other medical issues, and I keep a notation list on that page - I don't know if it was something I had to set up or if it's just an addendum to the Tracker. You'll have to check. It does help to see those brief notes to monitor things other than just what I've eaten.

I've slacked off on my handwritten journal, but I feel I need to go back to that in addition to the SP Tracker. The advantage of the handwritten version, as CYNDER56 noted, is that if you get one that will fit in a purse or pocket, you have absolutely no excuse for not being mindful about your eating, at home or in restaurants or friends' or family venues. You are accountable no matter what, and this helped me immensely at first. It was just too easy to intend to update it when I got home and then conveniently "forget" to follow through. I got a little journal that's about 5"x8" at an office supply, and it works perfectly. And it was cheap: I think there were 2 in a pack for a couple bucks.

Another advantage to that handwritten journal is that I make notations as to how I was feeling that day, how certain foods agreed or disagreed with me (so I could avoid trouble spots in future), whether I had any kind of cravings and how I managed them (cravings have different triggers - if they keep happening after eating certain other foods, I can help myself to avoid them the next time), I keep a page for periodic weigh-ins and measurings, and if I find some especially motivating or inspirational quotes I put them in for days I'm teetering or disgusted. I also can note the "science" and informational references from the various websites for reference in there.

It's more work to keep both types of journals ... but both have their unique uses that the other doesn't provide. I love the calculations and visual tools of SP. I love the accountability of the handwritten. It's been very worthwhile for me to have them both. But I have the time to do it, whereas some may be struggling just to keep the basics. You'll have to see what works best for you!

Especially if one wishes to chart the results, like I do. Numbers are great but a chart tells the entire story with one line on a chart.

I weigh and/or measure everything. And I log it ALL in three places (sorry, I am an Excel freak). Of course I use the SP tracker, copied into an Excel fire and I just started using the SP app for the IPhone. it is fantastic. If I have food loged in the SP tracker and open the app it will automatically add the contents into the app. Sure helps if you are away from home in a restaurant.

"Tare" is a function on the scale where you can go back to zero weight. Like I can put my plate on the scale, push "tare", it goes to zero, add my food and it weighs it only minus the plate. Then you and hit "tare" again, goes back to zero, and weighs whatever you add next starting from zero again without removing the previous items.

I've found it helps to keep a little white board in the kitchen, so if I'm cooking I can just jot down the foods as I use them. If it's not something I measure, I just stick it on the scale, write the number on the board, hit "tare" and add the next thing to the plate. Simple.

If I'm out and about I usually make a note in my day planner which is always in my purse. I often have to estimate, but when I've been weighing and measuring in my kitchen, my guesses get to be pretty accurate.

It's really only a few extra seconds for each meal and it makes a huge difference in how successful I am.

If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you always got.

I didn't start losing weight until I started tracking what I ate and how much. I keep it ongoing on a pad and type it into SparkNutrition, usually at night.

I do my best to track everything on SP. Find that I do get lazier when I don't have to loose weight - only to find that I've regained some weight.

I think it's great if you can find the time for it. I wish I could do it.

I write down everything in my journal--- what I eat, my weight, and how much I've lost. I think that this has helped to keep me accountable.

I still use the spark tracker but it's fairly easy as I eat the same thing for 2 meals and part of my snacks.

When I am trying to lose, I track everything. When I am maintaining I still track, but I am not as diligent about it. I especially track when I travel, or if I am having a bad or stressful day -- that is when carbs creep in.

I use the nutrition tracker for everything. Even when I can't weigh and measure, I make my best guess, then add on about 25%. emoticon

Eating low carb, I don't really count calories, but I do look at my carb count, and make sure that my calories are somewhere in the reasonable range.

When I was losing, I tracked everything here. Now I am more hit and miss here but I do use myfitnesspal.com for tracking via my phone (much more user friendly than the spark tracker). I still weigh and measure everything since my eyes tend to slowly supersize everything..lol.

I bought a diet journal for at home but found I never used it as I eat the same thing for breakfast and lunch every day and was not sure what to talk about. I'm not really an emotional eater so that was out. I tend to eat due to temptation so there isn't much to say regarding that. It would be excellent for most people though.

I weigh and enter everything! I lost 60 lbs in 6 months two years ago and have kept it off. Actually lost another 2 lbs. Tracking everything helps me keep focused. I also weigh myself several times a week and average those weights weekly.

Hi, Sammy, I absolutely have to journal all my food, along with how I'm feeling physically and mentally each day, victories, losses, ways I can improve for the next day, etc. But I only use the old fashioned way: a spiral notebook. I write down everything I eat and critique myself that way, it works well, but it's not fancy.

The other food journal I keep is just here on SP, WHEN I keep up with it. I do better with paper.

Congrats on your progress so far and I'm very glad you're doing low carb. I believe it's the only way to control PCOS. Keep up the good work. emoticon

Are you tracking your food? They give you a place to make notes where you can say how different foods make you feel if you want. Seems the simplest way to do it to me. You can adjust the tracker to reflect how many grams of everything you want to eat since the SP recommendations won't fit low carb.

Hi :)

I've recently been diagnosed with PCOS and I've been eating low carbs for almost 6 weeks now (lost 4lbs wooo! more than I've lost on WW or slimming world), anyway, do any of you have a food journal/log/diary I could have a peep at?

I've been trying to make one but I just don't know where to start with it.

Thanks :)
