I need to follow my advice and get back on plan. LOL.

I am going to take the shopping list with me to the US Morticia.
The people I am staying with are chefs and I am going to have to
convince them that I just want to eat low carb.

-I make the Minute Muffins with flax quite often, but I also take Psyllium husk, one tsp in the morning, between that and the veggies I seldom have a problem with constipation. The Psyllium husk I use is Metamucil, the pink lemonade flavor - you can use it up to 3x per day, I find once is enough unless I'd been having to use pain medication which will cause constipation. At that point, I might take a Dulcolax stool softener, which is what the pharmacist suggested.

-My favorite foods USED TO BE carbs, but I have changed my way of thinking (mostly) and actually, I don't try to find substitutes for what I can't have, I try and work with what I can have. I usually put my burger on a bed of shredded lettuce on a plate, add the toppings I want and cheese if so desired and dressing, (Thousand Island is my favorite on burgers) and sit down with a knife and fork. I feel like Morticia in this area, the bread is just what holds it together, doesn't add anything to it. And it takes a little while to get used to eating sandwiches that way, but any sandwich you like you can do that with. I ordered a Reuben sandwich at Applebees once when I was there and told them without bread. It was great!!

-I follow the Protein Power Lifeplan and I'm allowed UP to 30 grams carbs per day. And for my weight, supposed to have 102 grams protein per day divided up between 3 meals and snacks. If you're a bit careful, you can get a lot of salad and l/c veggies for 10 or so per meal.

-I drink water mostly and coffee (with caffeine for me) I very seldom drink any soda. I will have a small glass of wine with dinner quite often though.

-If you start looking at low carb cookbooks or alter other recipes, there are unlimited low carb meals you can have without just meat and salads. Just start slow, experiment a little - get a good carb counting book if you don't have one and let your imagination be your guide.

Good Luck to you!!!

I printed out your list to help me when I go grocery shopping. Thanks. I'm trying to stay under 100 grams a day myself but I may change that over the next few weeks depending on how I'm doing.

Low carb saved my life.

Depending on what kind of low carb plan you are on there are different ways to prevent constipation. The most obvious way is to drink lots of water. Some plans like South Beach encourage 4.5 cups a veggies a day and allow fruit in phase 2. Low glycemic veggies are encouraged on most low carb plans. I eat a large salad every day which helps. The low starch veggies and low glycemic fruits are actually the ones with the most fiber. Flax and chia seeds are a good source of fiber. Greens, coconut flour, avocado, artichoke, broccoli, cauliflower, berries, pears, apples are great sources. Bean, peas, lentils, nuts, and seeds if you plan allows. Asparagus, celery, mushrooms, radishes, cabbage, peppers, zucchini. Barley if you plan allows whole grains and you can tolerate them. When you reduce your carb intake your fat intake nautrally increases and helps as well. Some people take a fiber supplement until their body gets used to it. I seldom every have any problems.

How many carbs you eat depends on your plan and what you can tolerate. Some people who do akins do 20gms a day. Others like me keep their carb intake below 150gms of net carbs a day.

I found I do not miss the bread. I discovered that what I liked on a burger was the taste of the meat and toppings. I use a lettuce leaf or just eat the burger with a fork. There are low carb breads and wraps sold at many grocery stores. I prefer to do without.

I have a list of snacks I eat -

Sugar free jello
Sugar free, fat free pudding
Sugar free popsicles
Sugar free fudsicles
Sugar Free Hard Candy
Sugar Free Jelly, Jams, Preserves
Light Whipped Topping
Ricotta cream with extracts, cocoa powder, sugar free chocolate syrup, or sugar free syrups
Laughing Cow Cheese
Cottage Cheese with SF preserves
Cabot 50% Reduced Fat Cheese
Other legal cheeses like mozzarella, gouda, American, Cheddar, cottage, provolone. Swiss, FF cream cheese
Hard Boiled Eggs with legal dressings
Garbanzos
Nuts and Seeds
Peanut Butter Stuffed Celery
Apple and Peanut Butter
Low Carb Tortilla Crisps and Salsa
Low Carb yogurt
Serving of dark chocolate
Fruits
Raw Veggies - especially radishes, cauliflower, pickled cucumbers, pickled peppers
Olives or Sugar Free Pickles
Pepperoni chips
Canadian Bacon
Sugar Free Deli Meat
Leftover meat
Tuna
Sugar Free Cocoa
Decaffeinated Flavored Teas
No caffeine, no sugar soft drink

There are low carb pastas, some low carbers eat long cooking brown rice as long as it does not cause cravings. There are tons of low carb pizza recipes. Sugar free candy. .

I eat the same thing for breakfast every day by choice but there are lots of low carb ideas I have - 4 fried egg whites, 2 strips lower sodium bacon, a glass of Hood Calorie Countdown Chocolate Dairy Beverage, and a clementine or 1/2 orange. Occasionally a piece of low carb toast. Rarely 1/2 of a High Fiber Light English Muffin.

I have the same thing for lunch every day by choice - a main dish salad with mixed greens, broccoli, cauliflower, carrot, radishes, green pepper, 2 cooked egg whites, 2 queen size green olives, 2 ounces of turkey or chicken and homemade French dressing. Sometimes some cheese, bacon bits, or sunflower seeds.

Supper is usually meat, low glycemic veggies, and a piece of fruit.

All low carbers are not the same though. We tweak the diet to suit our own needs.

Try ground flax seed. You can add it to almost anything you eat. It gives a slightly nutty taste. And it will keep you regular. I had that same problem and my neighbor across the street recommended the ground flax seed and in fact gave me a box of it. I will be keeping it on hand.

Ground flax seed or meal has 60 calories per 2 tablespoons, 4 grams carb, 5 grams fat, 3 grams protein, and 0 sodium.

emoticon Morticia, If anyone doesnt know WHO I am takling about, it is: MORTICIAADDAMS

I was going around yesterday reading and posting on blogs from team members of the various spark teams I belong too and then I came across Morticia's sparkpage.

I was so inspired by Morticia's testimony on her spark page that I literally went on amazon.com immediately and ordered 4 (used) books related to low carbing:

1. low carb basics for dummies
2. heartburn and reflux for dummies
3. low carb dieting for dummies
4. How I gave up my low-fat diet and lost 40 pounds

I figured Morticia HAD TO know what she was talking about and why didnt I know? smiles.

so I started thinking.... WHAT kind of foods do I eat the MOST? what are my favorite foods?
Is it meat or is it carbs?

Answer: carbs

then i remembered that saying:

If you always do, what you always did, then you will always get, what you always Got!

So I began to think ........... if my favorite routine foods that I have a tendency to always OVER consume are MAINLY made of carbs and very little meat if any..... then clearly I am thinking that it is the over indulgence of carbs that is packing ON the pounds..... not the fat really if ya think about it.

My worst fear: constipation (a painful reality when one is subseptible to constipation)

MY questions are: For those of you who practice and live a low carb or smarter carb life style choice.....

emoticon 1. Where exactly do you get a sufficient amount of fiber from to help move your bowels/waste out of the body? Dosent anyone worry about or suffer from contstipation?

emoticon 2. On the average, how low does one go on eating carbs per day?

emoticon 3. How do you make a hamburger or a sandwich or a tortilla wrap/burrito WITHOUT bread? What substitution does one use for bread?

emoticon 4. Some favorite foods: ice cream, pork fried rice, pasta, french fries, candy, donuts, chocolate and more candy and pizza, etc................ so what do most of you eat to substitute this loss from one's diet?

emoticon 5. Do low-carbers MOSTLY eat animal protein and fats along with a salad for 5 small meals per day or 3 meals per day? If so, don't you get tired of eating the same type meal over and over and over again? I am really curious about it.

thank you readers for your participation in this topic :-)
