I'm glad that I can inspire you, Beth. I have been stalled for quite a while now and gain and lose the same 10 pounds. LOL.

I very sorry you won't be a grandmother, because it is one of the better parts of this stage in life. However, I often look at your spark page, I must admit, to receive inspiration and motivation. To see you so close to your goal just must be the most exciting thing ever. I've been thinking if only I had stuck with it like you did, I'd be where you are now. I love my grandsons more than life itself. But, because of my weight, I am unable to enjoy them the way I want to. I can't get in the floor with them, go down the slide at the park with them, swing with them and I get wore completely out just trying to pick one of them up. They are my inspiration, but you have helped me more than you will ever know. I know I haven't made much progress here, but I'm planning on changing that and with spark friends like you, I know I can. Thank you for all you do!!!

From what I hear being a grandma is the best but I don't think I will get that pleasure. You can't have everything, I guess.

I like menopause. LOL. I mean I'm almost 60. It's not like I want a baby at my age. LOL.

I'm trying some OTC natural hormone stuff now......Amberen. Going to see how it goes. However, I woke up this morning itching (no hives or anything like that), just itching. When I went to the Doctor this week, he put me on 3 different meds and now I'm doing the Amberen so I don't know which one I'm having a slight reaction to. Oh well, I know it will take time.

My family FREAKS if they know I'm out of my Prozac....LOL. Now that they know about the menopause thing they are even more scared. I told them it was they Halloween present. I'm becoming a MONSTER!!! LOL Being from the South, I've always prided myself on being the soft, gentile, southern woman. I've always done everything to try to make everyone happy. Now, it seems like I don't even care anymore......that part I must admit I kinda like....tee hee! Who knows maybe this menopause thing will be a good thing!

Thanks to all of you!!

Hmmm......I'm not your maid.....if I had a dime for every time I have said that. My family tells me that I have a bad attitude anytime I am cleaning house. I wonder why? If everyone would just take care of their own messes, it would take up so much less of my time. lol

My family was very supportive. My son and husband both agree that I had the personality of a rattlesnake but I really never noticed actually. LOL. What I did notice was that when people were trying to use me or dump on me I was acutely aware of it like I had never been before and immediately stated firmly things like, "No, that is so not going to happen!" "Get your own soda!" "Empty your stinking waste can!" "I'm not your maid!"

Personally I would not use HRT. It just helps the hot flashes and does nothing to prevent heart disease. It increases your risk of breast cancer. I went through menopause without it. You can find ways to stay comfortable. I short circuited the hot flashes by keeping a cold rag and a water bottle in the fridge. When one started to happen I put the cold rag around my neck, put some ice in the water and drank the cold water, while I sat in front of a fan. it really helps.

As far as being cranky, I think it's a natural thing. Liberating. No more estrogen, no more Mrs. Nice Girl. We spent years sucking it up while being long suffering. Menopause puts a stop to it. The Golden Rule comes into play. Be nice to me and I'll be nice to you. If you want to fight, then it's ON!!! LOL. So my advice to your family comes from my husband who says the proper response is always, "Yes, Dear!!"

I would avoid soy for the same reason I would avoid HRT.

I found that Remifemin only worked for a short time. I stopped it, started it again a year later and the same thing happened. Hot drinks definitely make hot flashes worse, so I always have cold water available. Since I have a family history of breast cancer, my doctor said absolutely no to HRT for me. I wish you luck. I struggled through it and am on the down side now. I do use the Estrace ring for bladder issues caused by lack of estrogen and I highly recommend that if you start having problems in a few years. Good luck! I sure don't miss those "monthly" days.

There are some bio-identical hormones that could help without some of the dangers of conventional HRT. Some are even available as regular prescriptions. I use a generic version of Climara, an estradiol patch and Prometrium. Also black cohosh, available from natural health and vitamin stores, has been helpful for many. The most well-studied brand is Remifemin. Do a little web research, as I'm sure there are things I'm not thinking of.

Diet-wise, avoiding processed carbs and getting enough protein might be a good idea. Eating more frequently to keep blood sugar level couldn't hurt either. Hope these ideas are helpful and I wish you the best of luck!

I found out today, after lots of blood work, that I'm in full blown menopause. Now I know why I'm always hot and being sometimes down right mean to those I love....major mood swings. I also have fatigue like non I have ever known.

I've been a member of Spark People since 2008, lost weight, gain weight, but due to other health problems, my doctor said today I MUST get serious and get some weight off. So, I'm back and trying again. I like doing low carb and my doctor actually recommended it for helping to control my diabetes.

My question is if any of you are on HRT for menopause? I still have to have a mammogram and hope it is normal, and if it is, the doctor wants to put me on hormone replacement therapy. I read such bad things about HRT, but also good too. I'd just like to have some advice, suggestions so I can really research this. Also, does anyone know of any diet revisions that can be made to help with the menopause process? I read tonight that the whole process can take 7 to 10 years!! I had no idea. If I can't figure this out, my family will kill me long before that.. LOL.

Thank you for any suggests, opinions, and/or advice.

Beth
