I eat dry beans too. They are healthier to me than processed grains. I agree about the sugar alcohols. It's best to keep them to a minimum. They are gut busters.

I subtract the fiber from the carbs, I try and stay completely away from the sugar alcohols because they don't agree with me if I have very much. And besides, they are usually in processed food, which I try and stay away from as well. I'm not eating grains, although I do eat a few beans sometimes. Beans are such an integral part of soups and this is getting the time of year for soups..........

Cathy is right - Glycemic load is more accurate than the glycemic index. The index is a measurement, expressed in a numerical value from 0 to 100, of the effect of a particular amount of food on blood glucose levels. The glycemic load is calculated by multiplying the glycemic index of a food by the amount of net carbs in a serving of food. I use the glycemic load in my diet too. But, basing your diet completely on the glycemic load is not a good idea. Your diet consists of more than carbs.

And, as Brayshome stated - net carbs are total gms of carb minus gms of fiber and sugar alcohols. Not all dieters agree that net carbs are the way to go and some count all carbs, some count all carbs minus the fiber, some subtract half the fiber, some don't don't subtract sugar alcohols. It's very individual.

I don't do well with a lot of cereals and starches either so I limit them to one or less on most days.

I'm not really sure how that works. I think it's better to figure out glycemic loads than individual indexes, but that's not always true either. At my age, I do better just not eating starch and cereals. Math has never been my strong subject.

When you say you are eating 35 carbs a day, are you talking about the index numbers or are you eating only 35 actual carbs points as seen in the tracker. I am following Rob Thompson's guidelines, I don't eat any starch at all, and eat tons of veggies and fruits, and I usually come up with around 70 points on the tracker. The only cereal I have eaten is All Bran, and that causes me to have horrible gas. I actually ate some oat bran this morning, as a change from apples and peanut butter, eggs, or yogurt and fruit. I'm confused about your number.

yes it does make sence . You know your body . I am 63 when i had days of 45 or 50
I felt dizzy at timesand losing some engery. so I researched the carbs

like for me I really dont care for me , my protein was running less than 20
s/b over 100. so it depends also what kind of carbs we are putting in our body .I up my carbs
20-30on every other day , so far no weight gain. well see . find any tricks let us know emoticon

I try and stay under 40, but am thinking about upping that. When I have more I feel bad, so if I give myself a little higher limit, maybe I'll feel better........make sense? I feel like I'm trying to achieve a goal thats not realistic for me.

I try to stay under 70, and that is some dairy, fruits and veggies. I don't eat grains, bread, pasta, or rice. I've been at a 16 lb. plateau for 10 days, but will hopefully move on soon. The fruit and sugar free ice cream keeps me sane.

Brayshome, I like that. "Carbs are like bunny rabbits." That's for sure. lol My carb load depends on what's going on in my life. Unfortunately, I am still a student of not letting my emotions dictate what goes into my mouth. Last night it was salt and vinegar potato chips. It's ok, though because it was a craving that I'd suppressed for a while. However, I was stressing about issues, so it was also an emotional binge. I'm fortunate though because I'm pretty active. My weight, though not perfect, is not unhealthy.

Back to carbs. I'm usually between 50 and 100. On a good day I can easily go below 50. I'd say that's probably 2 out of 7 days on average. The rest I'm somewhere in that range.

Smart Carber.

If hunger is not the problem, then eating is not the solution.

I keep my carbs below 150 net carbs and avoid triggers and I'm fine. I'm usually well below that in the 80 to 130 range. I eat few grains. I get my carbs mostly from veggies, fruits, nuts, and dairy.
