I am now down 8 lbs in 9 days. Today I finished a 5K in 55:43 a new record. I had so much energy I wasn't tired at the end. I couldn't do 20 g carbs per meal.. my brother does 100 g a day, but I have to stay stricter or I trigger a binge .. I am working my way up slowly..next week I will move up to 25 net carbs a day.

People with diabetes often do very well in the Atkins and Protein Power range of carbs starting at 20-30gms a day. 20 gms of carbs a meal is easy to do. You can have a lot of choices at that level and still have blood sugar control unless you are a brittle diabetic.

That's good to know. I think I can manage about 20 gr. of carbs per meal.

I am done with week 1, and lost 7.25 lbs..My brother went and lost 14 to keep me humble though. I am aiming to repeat this week, and my only goal is to get into the 210's.

Great job, Russel!

I know the low-carb works, because when I try to only count calories but eat everything my heart desires, I don't lose weight. On the other hand, when I cut out bread, pasta, rice and potatoes (eating them only sparingly and if I think it's really worth it) and focus on lean meats, fruits and veggies, I lose and I don't even have to count calories.

I lost on South Beach didn't count calories. I've lost on the "no-white" diet without counting.

But when I eat pasta and cookies and bread and rib eyes and candy and popcorn...I can count each itsy bitsy calories, stay in my range, and still not lose.

Carbs do drive blood sugar and also triglycerides. It is important for everyone to tweak their own plan because everyone responds differently and has different triggers and carb tolerance levels. Atkins understood that as did Agatston of South Beach fame.

I used to go on and off Atkins back when I was testing my blood sugars. I would have a 300 bs, and then go no carb for 24 hours, and it would be 84. So I knew carbs were what controlled my bs.I just started experimenting on my own, and have kind of decided to do my own low carb diet, based on Atkins OWL. I think it is important to become an expert on YOU.

I have to limit cheese, and fruit.. the fact that others can have these in abundance , even a potato every so often is of no concern for me. Doctors are pushing the diet they think everyone should be on .. I am pushing the diet I should be on.

I have hypoglycemia and am on a similar diet. When I follow it to the letter my blood sugars are always stable.

Hi, I'm new to this team, but I've recently seen how many doctors don't know enough about diabetes and nutrition. I have a great cardiologist, but he's been very upset with me that I didn't seem to be able to lose weight. He urged me to attend a diabetes education class at my local hospital. I did, and I was not surprised when it was all about the "good carbs" of whole grain cereals, breads and pastas. I was given a diet very high in those things. That same day I started SP. After a week of being on the SP plan, which was similar to the plan given to me by the ADA class, I decided to check into a low carb, low glycemic plan. I have done Atkins and I didn't like it because I love fruit and veggies. I read a couple of books and came up with my own regimen. It's Cathy's no-starch, lean meat, some fat, some dairy, low carb diet. I don't eat potatoes, bread of any kind, pasta of any kind, rice of any kind. I eat leans meats, but I do occasionally eat breakfast sausage or a slice or two of bacon with my eggs. I have low fat dairy and yogurt. My diet is heavy on veggies and fruit. So far I've lost 15 lbs, I'm able to exercise more, and my sugars have gotten very steady. I have no cravings I can't handle, and I feel great. Best of all, my endocrinologist is totally in my corner. He has never pushed a high carbs low protein kind of diet. This is the way to go for me!

Russell, it sounds like you're doing great! If it ain't broke, don't fix it. There are many, many things that are generally accepted that are just plain wrong. Some are just from ignorance and some from pure greed. Don't get me started on fluoride! Sorry, I digress. Maybe your doctor should read Gary Taubes. I think the first book is called "Good Calories, Bad Calories". More and more researchers are reaching the conclusion that fat is not the enemy, but carbs, especially refined, are. Keep up the good work. You have already accomplished a great deal.

Back when most of us went to nursing school and medical school everyone pushed low fat and we all fell for it, hook, line and sinker. As a nurse it was hard for me to change and some of the doctors I know still haven't come around but some, who keep up with cutting edge medicine, have and those are the doctors we should be encouraging and supporting. It's not easy to admit to patients, "Hey, we were wrong and gave you bad information." But it has to be done. If we really want to help people with diabetes, heart disease, obesity, etc. we have to do what works for them. Some people may be able to do a low fat diet and benefit. It isn't a cure for everything. This works for you and for me.

I have a student doctor at the clinic I go to for my heart problems.. She will be with me for 3 years. It helps me with costs, and they have a "supervising" doctor if anything is too complicated.

I have told her I am doing low carb.. and all she asked was for me to get my vegetables in for the nutrients. I think she was thinking that would put me at a high carb level, so she wouldn't have to say " Low carb is dangerous...boo!".

Today I am at 21 or 31 net carbs, depending on whether you count the 10g of sugar alcohol or not in the Atkins bar. Also I am eating 10 serings.. I may be off by 1-2 servings, but it is way more than I ate before low carb. My doctor is happy, and she will be even happier as I continue to lose weight.

I have been walking 2-4 miles a day, 6 days a week. I have a ton of energy. My lifts have been going way up on the 3 days I ST.. might be the 180 g of protein I am eating daily.

It is kind of funny that my doctor will be ecstatic about everything that is caused by the low carb, but not diet that caused it. I have gotten off diabetes meds, and next time I go, if cholesterol is as low as last time , I will stop that too!

This way I get the benefits, and the doctor gets results, and believes that I am doing a lower carb version of a "heart healthy" diet

At least they are moving closer to low carb. One day it may be the " diabetic diet", not Subway, and cereal.
