I've never even seen that one sold here. Of the Endulge ones I like the peanut butter cups and the chocolate coconut bars the best. And they are a good substitute for a Reese's cup or a Mounds though not quite as good.

I like Atkins bars but not all of them. What kind did you try?

well frankly it was so utterly revolting from the moment I tore it open, I had the tiniest nibble and refused to eat any more.

It smelt like the cheapest, nastiest chocolate and its texture was so waxy, like dog chocolate buttons (come on you ALL ate one as a child!)

Glad I didnt pay for it!

I've heard really good things about the Quest bars.

I go for the No sugar Added Reduced Fat ice cream as it has less carbs and the calories are not too bad and it tastes great. I stick with a serving though.

I can't stand the taste of agave but lots of people love it. It does have calories and carbs though. It's pretty high in calories but has a low glycemic index.

I can't do very much sugar alcohols... Like Morticia, they give me really bad gas and stomach cramps. Just a small amount is okay, but even some of the Atkins bars have quite a bit in them. I did find a protein bar (Quest) that does not have any sugar alcohol, and they're good as well.

I have the same reaction to excessive sugar alcohols. Xylitol doesn't seem to bother me, but the sorbitol and mannitol do. I'm getting some serious ice cream cravings and am wonder what direction to take them. Guess I'll be reading a lot of labels. Any thoughts on agave? I've read both good and bad things about it, and there are some pretty tasty coconut milk ice creams that contain it.

My blood sugar doesn't respond to sugar alcohols but if I consume too many of them they give me severe gas. And it is BAD!! I will add that those people who do have a response to artificial sweeteners will not have the same response as they have with sugar. From what I've read the brain detects the sweetness and says, "hey, some sugar," and starts responding to it but then recognizes that it isn't actually sugar and the response is cut short before becoming full blown.

They affect some people... just like other artificial sweeteners (Aspartame, Splenda, etc) can affect some people.

Quite a few people get gas from sugar-alcohols, especially if they eat a lot of it by itself (hard candies or similar).

Some people may have an insulin response (debatable if this is directly caused by the sugar alcohol itself or due to the sweetness in general... most evidence suggests it is likely the latter). However, without glucose, this may cause hypoglycemia if there is no other food present to temper the effects of the insulin.

Basically it boils down to testing for yourself how it affect your body. Everything in moderation.

Im confused about the sugar alcohols... is it correct they affect some people just as much as carbs normally do?

Laura does net carbs. Some of our members do net carbs and some don't. Some do net carbs for the fiber and others add sugar alcohols or just half of them. Kind of confusing.

I'd agree with DEY101... do you not count your totals as net carbs?

She's probably meaning no NET carbs... yes both Xanthan and Guar gum have carbs, but the carbs are all fiber, so they can be subtracted.

I use EZ-Sweetz. It's highly concentrated, one drop equivalent to 2 teaspoons of sugar.

goo.gl/CwJdH

Powdered sweeteners have carbs, such as 1 cup of Splenda is 24 carbs.

Liquid Sucralose is carb free, it's made/diluted with water. No dextrose or maltodextrin.

6 Drops = 1/4 Cup Sugar
24 Drops= 1 Cup of Sugar

0 Carbs

Thanks, Morticia. I'll check things out. There aren't really that many things I want to thicken anyway, but I don't want to get bored as things go on.

I love the Asian Sweet n Hot chili sauce. The main ingredients are water then sugar, the pickled chili peppers (chili peppers sit over night in vinegar and water) and garlic. I use the original bottle (it does have the ingredient list on it's label...lol), and make my own. I use xanthan gum to thicken it, the taste is identical, they too use xanthan gum to thicken it!

I have never found the ThickenThin but guar gum and xanthan gum are available even in my area now what there are more foods for celiacs. Xanthan is made from a fermentation process using corn sugar and is more expensive than guar gum but easier to digest. Guar is made from a legume and is high in fiber. You do not need much of either and have to be careful with them as they can make things slimy and the guar has a laxative effect. According to Bob's Red Mill guar gum is better for cold foods and xanthan is better for baked goods. Acid foods affect quar gum so xanthan is better for anything like citrus. They do have carbs but I've never used even a tsp in anything as a little of this goes a long way. It is in tons of processed foods and used to be in medicines. Not sure if it still is or not.

Is that ThickenThin stuff available at health food stores and such, or is it something I'd need to order?

Laura is usually pretty good. I wonder why she didn't realize that xanthan gum has carb since it's often made from corn.

One of my favorite things to make:
One package shirataki noodles, drained and rinsed.
Stirfry beef
broccoli, frozen
Beef broth

Stir fry the meat, add frozen broccoli, stirfry until broccoli is heated through, sprinkle guargum on mixture add broth and stir until gravy thickens, ( I don't make alot of gravy) add noodles, so good.
A hot meal when I get home from work.

"Vegetable Gums - Xanthan gum, guar gum, and proprietary products made from them, such as ThickenThin not/Starch, are thickeners with no carbs (and they contribute fiber)."

Xanthan gum has 2.6 grams of carbs per TEASPOON. It also has the same amount of fiber, which is why I use it.

I sent an email to Laura Dolson, I wonder if she'll receive it and correct the error?
