I rarely eat pasta either. Maybe once a year or less. I don't really miss it either. I was never a big fan.

Those things that I previously considered "healthy" carbs, well I have very little interest in now, I suspect I overate them (being vegetarian for about 5 years before I went Low Carb). So I have zero interest in pasta, potatoes, rice. Now the sweets, I wish I could eat them without impunity. But even if they didn't cause unsightly fat globules to appear all over my body, they don't make me feel good when I have finished eating. Well truthfully even while I am eating I am thinking "ok, you know you could stop now, you don't have to finish it" with every single bite, so I rarely enjoy it while I am eating it either. So I guess I just like eating sweets because I am supposed to enjoy it?

Picking up an old thread topic here about glucamannon noodles ... I found the tofu-added brands are more tender than the pure glucomannon noodles.
You can order glucomannon noodles from:
www.konjacfoods.com/
Their packaging is generic, but a case of angel hair noodles (24) is $25 plus $10 flat rate USPS shipping. I've ordered from them several times and always reliable.
I've used the Shirataki brand and paid up to $3 per package.
They all stink. That is the glucomannon.
emoticon
You have to rinse them thoroughly, and I like to put them in a skillet over heat to dry them before cutting them for use. Konjac is chewier, that's because it has no tofu in it. Konjac has a ton of pasta shapes and offers a variety pack. I found that for me the linguine or angel hair works best for me, I don't care for the heavier textured shapes. But you might like them! You can also purchase a 2-pack but it's $5 to ship.

I totally ignore the calories to the best of my ability, sometimes curiosity gets me though. Neither calories nor exercise seem to have any bearing on my weight loss.

i don't lose weight if I follow sparkpeople's recommendations. I try to keep my calories between 1200 and 1500. I can't lose otherwise.

I practice moderation in all things. It's not a single exposure to a carcinogen that will kill you. It's repeated exposure. And soy is not a carcinogen. It just mimics estrogen. Estrogen therapy post menopause has the same effect.

I should have added that studies say that consuming soy in post menopausal women ups the incidence of breast cancer.

soy mimics estrogen so in post menopausal women it is not considered a good idea to consume too much.

soy is sort of like corn because it is subsidized it is cheap and therefore it is then processed and in a lot of things. I just sort of figure if it is hidden in things I might ought to keep intake low, because if some of something is good lots of something is not necessarily better. when I do soy now, I will do edamame, or straight beans but less of the other stuff. Not that it is much different to do Almond or Coconut milk.

so many things to love about livin in Nashville, and Trader Joes just made it better, we also have several great used book stores, but I mostly use the library and got a nook from my kids when I went to the hospital so I can download books from the library onto the nook.

I am about to get rid of all of my cookbooks (except the ones from my grandmothers) I usually just check the internet now and they take up so much room in my pantry.

There are a few book swaps online I have seen where you just pay for the shipping. Somehow you put up what you are willing to get rid of and ask for what you want. I am too impatient for that, but have heard of people who love it.

p.s. I try to minimize soy as well and am trying to cut back on the artificial sweeteners, but of course the bars are only very occasional, because I would prefer to try to cut out most everything I get that is processed. someday!

Borders was one of my favorite stores and I liked it more than Barnes and Noble. We lost our only bookstore long ago. It sucks.

I sooo wish we had a Trader Joe's. The closest one to us is in New Mexico. Our Target is awful and they are trying to force the older employees to quit so that they can hire new ones in at lower salaries. I'm shocked that Borders is going out of business. It was the only bookstore in town and was always busy. The liquidators took it over today, so now it's ripoff time.

Those look decent. I'm staying away from soy and artificial sweeteners and these are the only ones I've seen with a fair amount of protein and no soy. Thanks for the link!

I have found a bar that calls itself a protein energy bar but tastes like a candy bar....it is Power Crunch protein energy bar and has only 5 grams of sugar 14 g of protein 9 net carbs (10g minus 1 Fiber). They have 6 flavors and everyone that I have found and tried has been fantastic.

Is it a coincidence that the ad on the thread for this page is for shiratake noodles?

Free lunch at work today - subs, not low carb, but the price was right!

It's just cause I'm cheap, GF, and always looking for freebies. LOL. I hate to waste money and have found that lots of places give free samples. Sometimes you don't even have to buy your own lunch. LOL. emoticon

I would not want to buy a case of something anyway unless I knew I loved them. Maybe you could talk them out of a sample.

So far I've only found the tofu style of shirataki. I did find a new noodle that looks like rice threads but made from kelp. Haven't had time to try it out yet. It was in the refrigerated section at Whole Paycheck and is about 18 calories for the whole bag. I'll let you know if it's disgusting!

I rinse the noodles, the smell is not bad. You can soak them in broth and they will take on the flavor, beef or chicken.

I did that at first but no longer do that.

Yeah -the fishy/ammonia smell/flavor of the ones w/tofu is really nasty.

There's a new brand at my market called NoOodles. Doesn't need refrigeration, no tofu/soy. Just konjac. I've got a bag in my pantry. I'll try it next time I make stir fry or soup (which will probably be a while)

It's a plant. In Asia, they make a jelly like candy from it.

Konjac (English pronunciation: /ˈkoʊnjæk/; Amorphophallus konjac; syn. A. rivieri; Japanese: 蒟蒻/菎蒻; こんにゃく; konnyaku; Korean: 곤약; gonyak; Chinese: 蒟蒻; pinyin: jǔ ruò), also known as konjak, konjaku, konnyaku potato[1], devil's tongue, voodoo lily, snake palm, or elephant yam (though this name is also used for A. paeoniifolius), is a plant of the genus Amorphophallus. It is native to warm subtropical to tropical eastern Asia, from Japan and China south to Indonesia.

It is a perennial plant, growing from a large corm up to 25 cm in diameter. The single leaf is up to 1.3 m across, bipinnate, and divided into numerous leaflets. The flowers are produced on a spathe enclosed by a dark purple spadix up to 55 cm long.

The corm of the konjac is often colloquially referred to as a yam, although it bears no marked relation to tubers of the family Dioscoreaceae.

Remember, nobody can go back to the very beginning and make a brand new start, but anyone can start here and make a brand new end.

There's a difference between interest and commitment. When you're interested in doing something, you do it only when it's convenient. When you're committed to something, you accept no excuses; only results."

When I am at the end of stir frying the meat and broccoli, I sprinkle the guar gum and stir it around until the meat and veg are coated, then add the broth a little at a time until I get a small amount of gravy.

If you take a small wire mesh strainer and use it to sprinkle the guar gum, it helps keep it from clumping.

Also, you only need a little, trial and error. This is the first time I have used it.

I went on Youtube and looked up shirataki noodles, there are a lot of videos that help with how to cook them.

I wasn't aware of this until a fellow blogger mentioned it, but youtube has a ton of low carb stuff to look at, if you have the time.

How do you keep the guar gum from forming lumps? I tried it in a stir fry the other day - added it at the end like I would corn starch to try to thicken the pan juices, but just got gooey lumps.

Those recipes sound delicious, so I'll have to give them another try.

I take 12 extra large shrimp, and 2 wedges of herb and garlic laughing cow cheese, I drain the noodles and rinse, heat my skillet add butter and then throw the noodles and shrimp in the pan, then I take 3 good handful's of fresh baby spinach and stir fry until the spinach is wilted, then I add the cheese wedges. So good. (ramin type noodles). I have also used the spicey laughing cow cheese and hot and spicy Mrs. Dash, also very good.

Stir fry beef, frozen broccoli, beef broth and guar gum (Bob's Red mill) the flat shirataki noodles, rinsed and drained. Stir fry the meat with the frozen broccoli until they are done, I add enough guar gum to coat the meat and broccoli, then add enough beef broth to make a small amount of gravy, after I turn off the heat I add the noodles. It is low carb, very filling and so good.
So many things you can do with it. I am glad I took a chance and tried them.
I do think it takes the right recipe.

Hmm - I'll have to try them in stir fry.
I was using them as a spaghetti/fettuccine substitute (which relates to the yummy sauce comments..)
I could see where they could be good in stir fry, or in asian type soups.
Hope I still remember them when the weather cools..

I like to use the flat ones in my beef stir fry and the "ramin noodle" ones with my shrimp stir fry. I toss the noodles in at the last minute to keep them firm.

Dreamfield, thats not a brand I'm familiar with round my parts of PA...I'll have to look into it! Thanks for the idea!

I'm glad I'm not alone in lovin them, but, I also dig tha they could be an "aquired" taste??

I'm not much into sauces on them, I guess I go more for the stir fry way of usin them...a dash of low sodium Worcestershire....(yay spell check on that one!), and Im set!

I have enjoyed them for a couple years now. I buy two different brands since Miracle noodles have an orzo shaped one that I love. I use the House (aka hungry girl endorsed) brand mostly for stir fry type dishes.

I'm with Penny - I've tried to like them, and really wanted to, but they don't really do it for me. Too mushy and tasteless.
I've tried adding great sauce, and I like the great sauces I've made, but the noodles are just a way to get the sauce to my mouth w/o a spoon.
Maybe I'll try them in soup when the weather's cooler - but eating them as a pasta substitute just doesn't cut for me.

I love shiritaki noodles, I eat them almost everyday. I get the ones that have the Hungry Girl picture on the package. They are so good.

I like Dreamfield's pasta, but I wrote to the company to ask about the carb content and found that once you add the sauce to the pasta, it starts to break down and the carbs go up. The only exception is the lasagna. It does make great lasagna and I've found that you don't have to boil it first. Just cover the lasagna during the first 30 to 45 minutes of baking.

I haven't found one, so I save pasta for a "carbing up" day.

Has anyone else fell in love with them? No fat, no calories....

I have found the kind "cut" with tofu.....these have 20 calories per serving, 5 grams fat...and no sodium, gluten free...sugar free...a calorie watchers dream!

so versatile!!!! They come in angel hair, regular and linguine styles!

I have to say, the texture is a little rubbery....but, once boiled up and added to a nice healthy sauce...well, its just too good!!!
