Congratulations to you.... You are an inspiration! You are definitely an expert and a lot further along than I am with all of this. I appreciate your staying around to support folks like me that are just seeing the information that clicks for them and quite frankly, helps to get our life back to a place of health. That is very interesting about what you learned about OCD and identifying your feelings/thoughts as they related to food -- that makes amazing sense. I would imagine you are really on to something here and I would imagine Kathryn et al would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks again for sticking around here! You are a breath of fresh air and thank you for inspiring me today and showing me.... it CAN BE DONE! Bless you! :)

I've been using a meal structure for seven years. I've changed at times what goes on the plates, but the basic structure has remained the same. I feel my habits are very manageable now and have maintained about the same normal BMI for nearly five years. I like to stay here on Spark to keep fine tuning (and I had some physical things change which affected my habits that I've had to adjust to) and keep supporting others.

I'm really behind that idea that most of our urges are just old brain patterns that are best diverted from. I got my process from reading about OCD. I thought, their obsessions sound so much like my feelings and beliefs when I am convinced I need to have food or I'll just explode! I knew I was up against a brain issue and I needed to make new connections with the good ol' prefrontal cortex.

No matter what our influences have been, I think recording and sharing the thoughts and behaviors we use to combat the urges on the day we use them is valuable. It's not just my opinion. Brain studies show that new habits are reinforced by review and approval!

Also- I came VERY close to putting down Glen's book because I am like the women he describes (says men are more likely to use his plan) and I do believe in loving yourself and the whole pig and pig slop initially went against my grain until I tried it. Kathryn helped me see that the lower brain or the pig is where I am derailed. I listened to the podcasts on his website and the interviews on youtube and I really liked the guy after listening to him so I said what do I have to lose. something he said that really resonated with me is that what the PIG wants to take away from you-- your family, future etc (if given complete full rein) we should have an anger toward -- and that eating within a reasonable food plan -- where he did not dictate what that was for anyone- was the way to take back the reins by giving the rational mind the ability to hear when the lower brain squeals so to speak. Basically, I do not want the darn pig to win anymore. I have given him a good portion of my life since 89. VERY SAD. Blessings to you....

YepI I use the I don't eat pig slop. I really don't have a never food outside of Gluten and Dairy due to allergies. I think between Kathryn and his approach-- there is room to formulate what works for you. Even the WAIT Loss book is probably good and is free on amazon -- I think key is finding what works for you. I think if you have REAL trouble with a food- it might ought to be on your never list. I used to have REAL trouble with ice cream etc and now that I cannot eat it-- well, it is not an issue. Key for me is getting the food plan to be nourishing and one that I feel non deprived on- thus, no desire to binge thankfully! Thanks for being here!

Did you actually use the thought, "I don't eat pig slop" today? Was it one of your "never" foods? (I don't have any.)

Awesome! Yes rewriting our brains is part of this- a big part! A nourishing food plan as per Never Binge Again- and self talk- his program is a little unorthadox but works for me- I tell myself- I don't eat pig slop and it works. The book is free on amazon!

Yesterday, I had to scramble to get some things done a day early. I felt kind of excited about it. When I was out the running errands, I got this urge to get junk and eat it because I needed to break a twenty and the bank lines had been way too long. I even walked by the cookie dough aisle! I wracked my brain for something cheap and opted for paper towels to contribute to a work kitchen. New connection in the prefrontal cortex!

i watched an episode of my 600 pound life. It was an episode where the person struggling I relate to very much. Watching them eat a huge pile of food while telling themselves they are starving is something I would do.

The Dr makes a calculation for them when they go see him and after they tell him they are eating practically nothing. He said they should be 200 pounds maintained on the diet he gave them. Since they actually gained while at ~ 600 pounds that means they were eating > 3 times more than they were supposed to. He said you can lie to yourself and they can try to lie to him but even without his watching them eat he knows they were way over eating.

I keep trying to break back into the 270s and I seem stuck. I am also feeling sorry for myself and I am logging everything I eat so I can see my binge days. Tonight I ate 1393 calories and don't need anymore. I am within range for my carb, fat, and protein. However I really want some part tarts that I saw in the cabinet. I know if I open the foil pack I will eat both for 400 calories. That will put me over my daily limit, my carb limit, and I will be eating after 7 pm. I told myself if I still want them so bad I can have them for breakfast.

Normally I would eat them without thinking but the scale will not lie and my binging is making my diet healthy eating futile. I need something else to focus on and use for an emotional release. The 600 lb tv show stops me from mindlessly eating them but know I need to find something positive to put in their place.

Motivation follows action

I do things today so that tomorrow I can say I did it yesterday

Nothing tastes as good as feeling healthy feels

I knew I was getting together with friends OOT and wanted to have an appetite. Turned out they didn't have the food I thought there would be. Thankfully I was able to find some of my grocery foods on the way home and I made them into a little meal. I didn't want to have to wait until after the hour drive back. One of the foods was one I had been having a hard time finding, so it really helped balance the earlier disappointment. I like NOT to have to depend on the perfect food, but it helped to find a delightful replacement

Tomorrow is a day I will allow more relaxed eating. I had to remind myself many times today that I could wait until then to have some extras. It's 9:25 pm now, and I'm glad I've held out, though I wouldn't mind eating right now. However, I remember doing just that many times, and it usually did not help me feel any better for any length of time, so even though it's uncomfortable, I'm going to put up with it. I can have something delicious and fun in the morning!

I am trying to stick to my meal plan each day and if I feel the desire to binge I can only eat what is left for the day - not very tempting to binge on oatmeal or a hard boiled egg.

Way to go, Barb!!!

I kicked the diet soda habit about 5 years ago but still have cravings now and again. I rationalize to myself about why not since it is 0 cals BUT oh what a difference it makes for me! I very rarely have just one if I get started then I get itchy eyeballs, puffy under eye bags, and cravings for any and everything! Good move with the fruit instead! I can sometimes handle a fountain drink type in resturaunts without going over the edge...

Right after lunch I was craving a diet soda. I had water with my lunch and was not thirsty.... but I wanted a diet soda! Instead I had some pineapple, strawberries and blackberries mixed together. Took away the sweet craving and that diet soda doesn't sound good now! Not to mention I got a serving of fruit in!

I stopped the thought with counter thoughts:
-it's not mealtime. I don't eat a snack in the morning. So I .Got busy doing something that took about 30 min till lunchtime.
-I had a hearty breakfast so it's not true hunger. Hunger is not an emergency. Food and the opportunity to eat and enjoy it is coming.

Today, it worked.

I took the dog for a long walk - by the time we got home, I didn't think about eating anymore, I was only thinking about my tired feet and taking a shower! Sometimes for me just doing something works. Boredom or down time is a trigger for me.

I had/have a HUGE urge to binge tonight. I blogged about it in a pretty blunt way and it has stopped me from following through with that urge.

Hi there, I have been avoiding random eating a few days now. preplanned breakfast and lunch and sticking to the plan. I leave options open for dinner most times simply because I'm not sure about what to fix ahead or to allow some flexibility for what I'm hungry for. I also leave cals for an evening snack/dessert. But Plan, Plan, Plan is what keeps me from eating at random.

Happy Sparking!

I was able to remember how many times I've been sorry I ate even a small amount when I had had plenty of food several hours before and wasn't even hungry. Close to bedtime and SO glad I don't feel full.

Yesterday, I thought of what I was trying to accomplish by the way I eat, and reminding myself that I actually get a fair amount of pleasure from what I DO eat, so what I DON'T "get" to eat faded in importance. I also extended some time out and about by a trip to a thrift store, partly because I have a pair of favorite capris that have gotten so loose I think I really need to replace them. Didn't find what I wanted, BUT I found a white belt-hard to find at thrift stores, a coffee travel mug, and a sheer long-sleeved top that has good colors for my wardrobe- all for under 5 bucks! Might report that on the 21-day thread.

I'm enjoying participating in the October "mindfulness summit," a 31 day program that offers videos from various experts on mindfulness and today's video was on mindful eating. Lots of great resources: www.mindfulnesssummit.com

Signed up for the Star Wars Dark Side Challenge on April 17, 2016 - and have a goal to run the half-marathon in under 2:00:00. Can I use the Force to shave one minute/mile off my current pace? Find out here:

Loving this participation. Yes, delay and distraction are excellent tactics.

Thought about how I just don't want to reinforce the habit again. Thought about how it's okay that I haven't been able to clean the house, declutter, or do some other productive things. Just tolerating the feelings and doing catch up here is fine for today.

Remembered that I am trying to decrease my dependence on "eating props" to get to and through distasteful tasks. Still haven't gotten to the task, but haven't eaten, either!

I did give in today to a bag of Gardetto Rye Chips (4.5 servings), but I did track it honestly and painfully. I think that was a big step in the right direction. I had not done that in awhile, so I do not feel horrible about it and I am very happy that I accepted responsibility for my choice to cheat.

I gave myself a mini cheat day and it was wonderful.
Went to a party with lots of great choices along with lots of forbidden foods.
Yes, went over on the protein; and the nuts; and the cheeses; even had a bite of birthday cake.
Do I feel guilty? No way! Not gonna beat myself up either.

Now, back to reality!

Today, I really focused on how good my body is feeling, how much more energy I have to spend on things I would like to get accomplished, rather then spending the time feeling sick and lethargic in bed. When I spend that time not being sick and lethargic, I get more done, therefore being less stressed and less prone to binging. It's quite the cycle!

I have also been keeping up with posting on my blog every day in order to be accountable. When the thought to binge arises, I think of the fact that I would have to be accountable, and that deters me.
or it has for the past 13 days!

I was thinking of binging today, and almost gave in. Given that I AM calorie counting right now, but at a safe (and higher) 2000 calories, I wrote a blog on the 20 reasons why 2000 calories is more then enough!

I had bought a container of chocolate cream cheese only because it was on sale. I reminded myself that I don't want to be binger or bring or stimulate old patterns. The spread wasn't very satisfying and I have no plans to have guests soon who might like it, so I put it in the compost bin.

TODAY I TRACKED EVERY BITE!!

I would normally track most things, binge at some point and quit tracking. Today, I succumbed to eating a whole box if Reeses Pieces. I decided to track it. Interestingly, later this evening when another binge episode was hovering, my thoughts actually convinced me that I had enough calories remaining to eat "just a bit more." I opened the Spark Tracker and noticed that I was already way over my calories for today. Just seeing that made me realize that I usually fool myself into thinking I am not eating as much as I really am...even though I really do know it.

So for today that realization helped me avoid another binge. I hope it is enough to help on a regular basis. Life happens - now back on the plan.

Visit my blog and share your thoughts. I would appreciate it : www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_jo

Delay is often a very powerful tactic.

This morning I've been reading about voluntary simplicity and how to reduce expenses to retire. It's helped keep me from nibbling.

Yesterday when I felt like bingeing on a box of chocolates I'd gotten as present from a client, I decided to wait until 4 pm (that was at around noon). If I still wanted them then I could have 3 or 4 chocolates, I told myself.
When 5 pm came and went I said I'd wait until 8 pm and then maybe have 2 of them.

I ended up not eating any chocolate yesterday.

Noticed how full I was already and thought about how I wanted to feel less full later, so I skipped the extra food I was thinking about eating.

Today is my day one after a LONG time. I just keep cleaning today. I cant believe how dependent on food I am and how I really must use it to suffocate feelings. Work tonight should help keep me busy, but I work in a restaurant so its SO easy to just give in and eat what I want. Cleaning has definatly helped me out today!

I asked my husband for his thought when I was getting totally torn by food cravings (I think because of eating wheat). Agreed with him that I'd better just stop eating, and made a cup of chickory coffee while watching a favorite TV program.

I have set my planner to send me a notification at 5 pm to remind me to eat a normal portion (in other words not overeat) at supper every day. And it helps!
So the past few days I had only one portion of starchy foods at supper and ate extra vegetables instead of that second helping of potatoes.

I had put the chocolate mousse in my cart in the grocery store thinking I would 'try to' have it only in small portions over several days. And moved into another aisle.
Then I thought 'who am I kidding' and went back and put it back!

Kathryn, I love hearing when members actually implement recommended strategies. It helps me so much more than when people recommend something in general because when it comes down to it, we have to actually DO the things we need to, not just know what they are.

Distinguishing between the irrational "eat" voice and the rational voice is essential! I'm looking forward to more reports of you keeping up with these strategies, and even examples of moments when you were confronted with food and rationality wins over "eat." Oh, I'm so excited for you! Keep going and you will be a different person in a year.

I'm three days binge free today!

I've been trying to put a number of different methods in to practice to try and re-direct my energy into something other than bingeing, especially when I'm alone!

On Monday I meditated after dinner to try and get more in touch with my natural hunger signals.
Yesterday, I went for a walk in the sun after dinner, and I played a guided walking meditation on my ipod as I walked. Meditation seems to help me become more mindful of the little voice in my head saying "eat eat eat" all of the time; and it lets me distinguish between that voice and the logical voice. It helps me think more long term.

I feel less frazzled now- so that's good!

To my own surprise I put half of my delicious breakfast back in the fridge today. I wanted to go ride my bike and knew I'd feel to full if I ate all of it. That's a first. (On other days I'd have eaten all of it anyway).

I was not in danger of bingeing but did get hungry for lunch very early- not fake hunger, either. I determined to distract myself and got involved in a rather anxious telephone call with my mortgage loan servicer. That will take my hunger away! But I got the information I needed and saw that indeed, even authentic hunger can go underground when I am busy.

Hi everyone,

I'm one full day clear of my last binge. Today I meditated for 15 minutes after my dinner to help me engage more mindfully with my satiety.

Got offered a big dessert yesterday when visiting my parents. I had to think hard because I was full / satisfied already after supper. Managed to ask my father (the cook) to make me part of the dessert and to put it in a container so I could take it home to eat later.
It felt very good to do it that way.

I like the idea of the cashier tactic, but how can you pay before you choose the item?

Yesterday I knew that I would pick up daughter, we would go to our evening performance at the theatre and I would be rather tired when we finally got home.

I prepared a salad with carrots and sunflowerseed and had a chickenbreast from the freezer. Ordered pizza for daughter and then prepared my food and had it in the kitchen, did not want to smell that pizza...registred my food before it was ready and as I could see that it would give me a very nice number for the day in total I kept to my plan...daughter wanted to have popcorn afterwards and I said no as she already had pizza... AND knowing that that bowl would tempt me...

Went to bed early....

If I am in the sotre and have an instant attack of craving for something I tell myself I can have - I just need to pass the cashier and pay first and then I can go back in and get it... I have never gone back again once I passed the cashier.

Tonight I was coming home from a visit with a friend and stopped at a supermarket that has a bargain bin section. While there, I had the fleeting thought to go buy a previous binge food. I avoided that aisle and just told myself to keep moving only toward the food I was truly interested in. I made it out of there with no problems.

Yesterday - I went to bed, and in the bed I did some crosswords before I put out the light.

What I have done the past month to distract myself from thoughts about food are:

- excercising piano 30 minutes.
– borrowed a book about "cartoonist workshop" and do some of the examples in there.

declutter for ten minutes (with timer...)
