Delay is often a very powerful tactic.

This morning I've been reading about voluntary simplicity and how to reduce expenses to retire. It's helped keep me from nibbling.

Yesterday when I felt like bingeing on a box of chocolates I'd gotten as present from a client, I decided to wait until 4 pm (that was at around noon). If I still wanted them then I could have 3 or 4 chocolates, I told myself.
When 5 pm came and went I said I'd wait until 8 pm and then maybe have 2 of them.

I ended up not eating any chocolate yesterday.

When my husband said 'you know I'll always join you' when I was about to (continue overeating / start to binge and) reach for a second piece of candy, I said 'well maybe I shouldn't have this then' and didn't.

I opted for a fresh bowl of canteloupe instead of eating something off my plan. Day 2 and so far so good:)

Noticed how full I was already and thought about how I wanted to feel less full later, so I skipped the extra food I was thinking about eating.

Today is my day one after a LONG time. I just keep cleaning today. I cant believe how dependent on food I am and how I really must use it to suffocate feelings. Work tonight should help keep me busy, but I work in a restaurant so its SO easy to just give in and eat what I want. Cleaning has definatly helped me out today!

I asked my husband for his thought when I was getting totally torn by food cravings (I think because of eating wheat). Agreed with him that I'd better just stop eating, and made a cup of chickory coffee while watching a favorite TV program.

I have set my planner to send me a notification at 5 pm to remind me to eat a normal portion (in other words not overeat) at supper every day. And it helps!
So the past few days I had only one portion of starchy foods at supper and ate extra vegetables instead of that second helping of potatoes.

I thought about the spiritual text I'd been reading and how connection with a higher power can be more fulfilling than the food I was craving and managed to just go to bed instead of continueing to overeat.

I had put the chocolate mousse in my cart in the grocery store thinking I would 'try to' have it only in small portions over several days. And moved into another aisle.
Then I thought 'who am I kidding' and went back and put it back!

I find myself postponing eating. I get a thought that says something with the word 'eat' in it and I ignore it and go on with what I was doing OR I go do something useful.

Kathryn, I love hearing when members actually implement recommended strategies. It helps me so much more than when people recommend something in general because when it comes down to it, we have to actually DO the things we need to, not just know what they are.

Distinguishing between the irrational "eat" voice and the rational voice is essential! I'm looking forward to more reports of you keeping up with these strategies, and even examples of moments when you were confronted with food and rationality wins over "eat." Oh, I'm so excited for you! Keep going and you will be a different person in a year.

I'm three days binge free today!

I've been trying to put a number of different methods in to practice to try and re-direct my energy into something other than bingeing, especially when I'm alone!

On Monday I meditated after dinner to try and get more in touch with my natural hunger signals.
Yesterday, I went for a walk in the sun after dinner, and I played a guided walking meditation on my ipod as I walked. Meditation seems to help me become more mindful of the little voice in my head saying "eat eat eat" all of the time; and it lets me distinguish between that voice and the logical voice. It helps me think more long term.

I feel less frazzled now- so that's good!

To my own surprise I put half of my delicious breakfast back in the fridge today. I wanted to go ride my bike and knew I'd feel to full if I ate all of it. That's a first. (On other days I'd have eaten all of it anyway).

I was not in danger of bingeing but did get hungry for lunch very early- not fake hunger, either. I determined to distract myself and got involved in a rather anxious telephone call with my mortgage loan servicer. That will take my hunger away! But I got the information I needed and saw that indeed, even authentic hunger can go underground when I am busy.

Got offered a big dessert yesterday when visiting my parents. I had to think hard because I was full / satisfied already after supper. Managed to ask my father (the cook) to make me part of the dessert and to put it in a container so I could take it home to eat later.
It felt very good to do it that way.

Yesterday I knew that I would pick up daughter, we would go to our evening performance at the theatre and I would be rather tired when we finally got home.

I prepared a salad with carrots and sunflowerseed and had a chickenbreast from the freezer. Ordered pizza for daughter and then prepared my food and had it in the kitchen, did not want to smell that pizza...registred my food before it was ready and as I could see that it would give me a very nice number for the day in total I kept to my plan...daughter wanted to have popcorn afterwards and I said no as she already had pizza... AND knowing that that bowl would tempt me...

Went to bed early....

If I am in the sotre and have an instant attack of craving for something I tell myself I can have - I just need to pass the cashier and pay first and then I can go back in and get it... I have never gone back again once I passed the cashier.

Tonight I was coming home from a visit with a friend and stopped at a supermarket that has a bargain bin section. While there, I had the fleeting thought to go buy a previous binge food. I avoided that aisle and just told myself to keep moving only toward the food I was truly interested in. I made it out of there with no problems.

Yesterday - I went to bed, and in the bed I did some crosswords before I put out the light.

What I have done the past month to distract myself from thoughts about food are:

- excercising piano 30 minutes.
– borrowed a book about "cartoonist workshop" and do some of the examples in there.

declutter for ten minutes (with timer...)

I wasn't tempted to binge but was tempted to stretch lunch out longer having a cafe au lait that I wasn't really hungry enough for. Since I'm on break from work, I felt I should be cleaning and organizing, but ended up napping. I'm lucky I have the time to do that, but when I woke up, I didn't want any food or drink and now feel very content to wait for dinner.

Last night was so hard!!! I was just about to give in when a friend texted me to ask if I was coming to Overeaters Anonymous meeting the next day. Oh yeah, I really need those meetings. So I texted back yes and "hey, I'm having a hard time right now. Really want to snack." She texts back - "no! you can walk away from it" - so I did. I went for a walk. when I got back, I wasn't tempted anymore

I came home to some upsetting news and the first thing I did was get out some binge food (in my case, crackers and cheese) to deal with the emotions. But after about 10 of them, I knew I'd just make myself more miserable if I kept going, so I had one of my kids take the crackers and hide them in the garage! Weird, but it worked. Out of sight, out of mind! Enlist your family members for help!

Today when I was stressed out and would have turned to chips i went for a walk and looked at the nice gardens that others have in their yards. I don't have a yard but I have an indoor garden that I bought a new plant for today. Our gardener for this apartment complex gave me some clippings to start new plants to day, my garden is really taking off.

This is from yesterday and I wanted to post since I forgot to do it last night.
I had wanted to go for a walk to get away from the temptation while lunch was cooking. I was so hungry and trying to wait for my fiancι to get home before eating... It was pouring down rain though so I almost gave in. On a whim, I got out the yoga mat and did some light yoga & stretching. It really helped me stop thinking about binging! I'm going to try this from now on when I sense a binge coming on. emoticon

I made myself a pounds-lost ticker and put it in the living room. I almost gave in yesterday evening, but I thought - it's Day 1 for me, I really want tomorrow to be Day 2 and not Day 1 again. And I wanted to see that pounds-lost ticker move at least a little bit.

I need to eat a good breakfast of largely protein. Keeps me full and gives me energy. If I have a casserole ready for lunch and dinner then that works well. I have to watch my emotions, the smallest thing can set me off - that's when I reach for the chocolates and ice-cream. Once I start eating sugar I can't seem to stop. Best that I don't start.

HELLO! I'm new to this forum but just wanted to share pre-planning my meals for the week has been HUGE for me. I have healthy snacks ready for different times throughout the day and stick to an eating schedule so I'm not starving when I leave work. I have healthy foods waiting for me at home so I don't run to the grocery store and binge on everything. emoticon

Good idea Surrender!
I too will benefit from posting here more often.
This week I prevented a binge by walking home after a very stressful event (instead of riding my bike), to help myself be more grounded. While I was walking I thought about what else I could do to finid relief from the stress beside eating, and I thought of two or three fun things I could do when I would get home. I got home, ate some healthy food because I was hungry, then went to do the fun things - and the urge to binge passed.

Keep it simple.

I haven't posted here in a long time, but I need to start checking in and reading other posts because after a long stretch of not binging and eating healthy, I'm starting to slip again!!! It's because I'm not actively thinking about what to do instead of eating when I'm not hungry.

Off to read some of the great ideas posted here...

I did start a binge, twice even, yesterday but I did not 'finish it' (lol how does one 'finish a binge'?!).
What I did the first time, after I'd already started, was agree to stop for just three minutes. Actually after stopping to eat I realized after half a minute that I did not want to continue and realized that I want to be healthy and strong and present for my sick dog and for my husband, times are hard enough as they are without me hurting my health.
So I put the trigger food away and went into town.

The second time was at night when I was so tired and worried. I overate more than earlier BUT I did chose to not continue and just get up, that was hard! And go to bed. I think that again, what helped me do it was to realize I do not really want to eat so much and hurt my health.

Well I am struggling after losing 10 lbs I'm just maintaining. I have good intentions and I am on track right up until about 2:00. I had a snack but that evening I thought about my craving for chocolate. So I made myself a cup of hot chocolate and had 2 graham crackers and that seemed to take the edge off. I made it through.

I'm hopeful with sparkpeople support that I can lose weight and get healthier.

Read about a topic that gives me stress and noticed a thought about chocolate. Then recognized the trigger (the topic / the stress) realized 'I don't really want chocolate, this is just an addiction / habit response' iand then ignored it. Succesfully.

Had a long drawn out battle with the bagels a co-worker brought in... and decided I have been meaning to try a new strategy with dessert tea. Ran to the teavana next to my office, bought a few bags to try out, and am looking forward to having them later!

YAY. During an argument that I had today I felt so terrible that I was more or less SURE I was going to binge. I found the little bar of chocolate we have in the house and even opened the package,
Then, I decided that I DID NOT WANT the binge. I thought about how much I want to be 'addiction-free' and work on my health and how much this binge would set me back, not just regarding weight and such but also or even more, in morale.
So I suggested a time out for the argument, and sat down. And then the argument was talked out and I did not binge- and took a healthy soup out of the freezer for dinner! emoticon

I don't think I've ever been this close - on the verge of - a binge and then turned around!

So many changes around here lately - most of them good, but that can still cause stress for me. I've been meditating recently and that has seemed to help keep the anxiety at bay.

Wheat-On-Trial, that sounds very similar to the meal I made last night. Italian chicken sausage with tomatoes, onions, italian seasoning and shredded zucchini instead of the pasta. Yum!!

This is what I did to keep from binging last night. I already knew what the trigger would be - hubby not being there again. That's not really the trigger, the real trigger is being at home alone. Anyway - I made myself this dinner, I ate more than one helping but it was mostly veggies, and I had room in my calorie allotment for it. So did I binge? I could have, I ate more than one serving. Was it bad? Not really, it was all veggies cooked in a bit of olive oil.

THEN, I put in a good hour on the end of a shovel and a rake in the rose garden. I'm sore, but I feel good!

Onward and upward!

Good for You! I can relate to you about health issues. I'm worried about my health because of my weight. I've seen friends suffer because of it. My joints are suffering too because of my weight since I'm older. So you would think that would be enough for me to keep me on tracks but I'm struggling. But I'm not really binging, I'm overeating at times. Now that may sound good, but I know how deceptive this binging thing is.....overeating is the begining of an inevitable road to a binge and I'm on that road right now. Have a great day! emoticon

I got quite bad news yesterday and last night I could not sleep because of it. I got up to do something else instead of just laying in bed brooding. Many times before I'd binge on such an occasion. We even had a trigger food in the house.
To my surprise I realized I had no urge to overeat or binge.
Maybe it has to do with the fact that the bad news has do with health issues. I got bad news about a dear one last week and maybe it all motivates me to just want to be as healthy as I can, both to be there for my loved one and for myself.

Today I thought - I am looking forward greatly to what I will be cooking for dinner and a binge will ruin it!

It was delicious, by the way - chicken sausage with peppers, tomato, onion, and spaghetti squash. Yum!

I am starting to try no-sugar days every other day, because I think sugar is one of my binge-triggers (that and Cheetos!!!)

So today is no sugar day, but one of my daughters saved me a cookie she got at school. what a sweetie!

But what to do? It's a no sugar day! and I was already full, anyway. But tomorrow is another day, so I wrapped the cookie and left it in the car for tomorrow - hoping I can keep my no sugar day!

Overate at dinner - I was just NOT thinking, my husband was preparing to leave to see his sick mother, I had not made enough of the stew I made for dinner, we ended up defrosting frozen pizza. I had too much of it. Somehow after overeating I often think 'what the h.' and want something sweet. Like chocolate. That we happen to have in the house. And husband will be gone all night.
Yet somehow I told myself 'you can have a piece of chocolate but AFTER you are no longer feeling so full'. That means waiting for three hours. Over two hours have passed since then. I'm still full! And no longer craving sweets.
In the meantime I took an extra walk.

Keep it simple.

Had a very, very difficult time in the past two days. I did not have a binge.
I did go out to a restaurant with my husband and overate, but no binge eating followed. Yesterday we went to a coffeeshop and I did have cake, because I felt I 'needed / deserved a treat' but again, it was not followed by more overeating and binge eating.
I think that 'allowing' myself these things actually may have helped to prevent a binge. In fact even my husband suggested we buy some chocolate to 'comfort ourselves' - and I said NO!
I want to be in good shape to be able to deal with the challenges we are facing. I do not want to have to fight lack of sleep and feeling numb and bloated when I need to be present.

Keep it simple.

I was all upset about being unable to sleep and had thoughts about bingeing BUT I let my husband "talk me into" 'just' going back to bed. I even slept. It seems inevitable (wry smile) that I must (and wish to!) learn to simply endure the bad moments even if they seem unbearable.

What did I do today instead of giving in? Well, I sort of gave in, but I stopped it. I ate my usual dinner, then still craving, I made myself a half PB & J. The jam I made myself, reduced sugar so not so bad. The bread was whole wheat, and I chased it with a glass of 2% milk. The milk goes a long way to filling me up.

Now I'm doing sets of jumping jacks. Yay! Full blown binge averted!

I do love Eeyore....my husband says I'm sometimes like Eeyore....I just laughed, I have a pair of Eeyore pj's and a tee shirt with Eeyore on it. I also have a real donkey (along with lots of other animals). Here is a quote from Eeyore!

Eeyore, the old grey Donkey, stood by the side of the stream, and looked at himself in the water. "Pathetic," he said. "That's what it is. Pathetic."
He turned and walked slowly down the stream for twenty yards, splashed across it, and walked slowly back on the other side. Then he looked at himself in the water again.
"As I thought," he said. "No better from this side" emoticon .

I started my day by reading my Bible and praying. I need to remember that I'm not perfect and never will be. I was doing so well for a number of weeks but my old habit popped up without actually any reason. I am one of those who can binge with any or no reason at all! I also checked out LBF for inspiration and support. emoticon

So discouraged and tempted to binge because I'm on a month long plateau, A MONTH???!!!! - no pounds lost even though I have been binge free, eating controlled portions and exercising regularly. Does this mean I need to do something MORE drastic to lost weight, e.g. less carbs/sugar?

Last night dragged myself to an OA meeting and after 6 months, I now finally have a sponsor, someone committed to checking with me on a regular basis, we plan to keep each other accountable. So that gives me new courage to continue eating right even though I haven't lost any weight.

After two days of bingeing I didn't binge yesterday!
When tempted I got myself a nice little notebook to journal in and talked with my husband, asked him for support. And cried and made some choices. Taking an extra walk helped me, the fresh air always helps to clear my head.

Keep it simple.

Today after a very tough class that I taught and another very difficult moment I noticed myself thinking about chocolate. Noticed that this was a 'reward thought' (food as a reward / comfort for going through a difficult time) and pushed the thought away.
Walked an extra block with my dog instead taking the time to process all that I'd been through. I may take a few hours 'off' of my busy schedule to do some more 'processing'.

Yesterday I had less of cake and sweets that was offered to me.

Keep it simple.

This morning I thought about whether I was still hungry. Ate only my breakfast and no more. I feel I might be rationalizing that it is my birthday today and purposely let down my guard.
