I think targeting a specific food (or "food-like") product is ridiculous. The emphasis should be placed on educating the public about smart food choices. Sadly, the food (and "food-like") industry has a pretty hefty input in government policy. I see soda (regular and diet) in the hands of more adults than kids, but I see the caffeine-and-chemical-laden garbage (from Mountain Dew to those awful energy drinks) in the hands of kids.
We're fortunate to live in a place where we have food choices, but wise choices need to be taught.

I believe in moderation and education. So many people just don't know when to stop, and these are usually the ones that are clueless to nutrition fact, sugar content, etc. Making people pay more just means less money in someone's pocket, leading to other poor nutrition choices when they can't afford anything healthy!
NO TAX. Once it starts, with sugar in soda, it will never end. How many products have ingredients that could be considered bad for your health, like eggs, carbs, fat, etc.,The government should not try to control the consumption by an individual by imposing a tax and who are they to say whether it is appropriate for that person or not. Maybe I drink a regular coke once a month to reward myself for walking 2 miles a day for 30 days. I certainly shouldn't have to pay a tax on that.
Maybe they could impose limitations on what is covered by food stamps/EBT. That might be a better place to start. And maybe they should develop some programs to allow local vegetables to be purchased at more affordable cost for the less fortunate. I'm sure there are a hundred better ways to address the cost of health care in Vermont and the US than to start imposing taxes on people. I could go on and on about this stuff... but I won't. Live free or die!!!!

I don't pay any attention to the ads, but I don't really agree with taxing sugar-sweetened beverages. I don't think soda is the biggest culprit to the obesity epidemic and I don't think they can tax us into being healthy. It is just another way to get $$ out of us. I only drink diet soda and yes, I drink a lot of it. There are those who say it is bad for you, but there are a lot of things I could eat or drink that are worse than diet soda and I have no intention of giving it up. Just my two cents worth!

I will say that I disagree because I feel the government is getting involved in to much of our lives. Parents know soda can be bad, so why don't THEY take the initiative to keep it away from their kids. As for adults, they are ADULTS, and as such should be able to decide whether or not they want to be healthy. Even with a tax, if the want soda, they'll buy it, and their kids will probably go without. I still see people buying cigarettes even with their cost.
I don't know about you, but I was a little shocked to see this banner appearing.and reappearing on my Spark pages, about stopping the VT beverage tax. I wasn't giving it any thought, really. Yes, it is an inconvenience. But, truthfully, we shouldn't be drinking these things anyway. Even diet soda has it's drawbacks besides calories. So why shouldn't we be taxed for using this unhealthy item? Yes, I drink diet soda sometimes. I have been drinking seltzer for 25 years, and even though that doesn't have the sugar or chemicals, I also know that just the carbonation is bad for bones. So, just as raising the tax on cigarettes repeatedly, to a point that they got so expensive,so that eventually people gave up smoking, if not for health reasons, then maybe because of the cost, maybe doing the same to soda will force us to cut it out or cut back.
