This weekend I visited a bakery for breakfast. A tiny locally owned place, they featured breakfast made from organic local-grown produce. And their coffee was served in mugs donated from pottery students!

Well here I am again, this week I made several mobiles for gifts.I made them with polymer clay and they came out quite nice I painted them and hung one up outside to see how they turned out and I am pretty happy with the results although I really do miss my kilns and hope to move late next spring or early summer to a place I can have a kiln but meantime working with polymer clay is OK.Husband found that he has to order the string for his trimmer online as he has a lifetime supply for free so he ordered several rolls and they should be here soon.
We are hoping for some cooler weather soon,my little bedroom gets so hot so I keep an air cooler going most of the time.Think I will take a break go outside and cool off for a few minutes.Well our fall weather should be here soon,I hope!!My husband calls 74-75% weather indoors cool, who is he kidding?? It seems very warm to me so will turn on the air conditioner again today.I do like the much cooler weather and will miss the snow on the mountains this winter. CLinOregon

Hello again, looks like I am the only person who writes to this site but I don't care because I really do like to visit this site! Hubby and I drove over to the next city about thirty minutes from our home.He needed to buy some string trimmer and I wanted to buy another house plant and it poured while we were there(at Lowe's) but we sure do need the rain. We had a nice lunch and then came home, nice little trip.Hubby needs to get "out"more often as he just sits and watches TV all day long.He suffers from severe COPD and is on oxygen most of the time but can still move around when he wants.I do feel for him as his breathing is so labored and he just can't do the things he used to.Thank goodness for his beloved VA which is just north of us,they really do take good care of him.
Well everything is OK here and we are slowly adjusting to our big move, HRinOregon

Hello,Here I sit at almost 10:00 Sunday night but am enjoying myself.Had a little glass of wine and watchedd the moon come up...nice way to spend a sunday night.Hubby went to bed a couple of hours ago so now it is me and LALUNA!
I haven't done much in my craft room as I just don't have the room to work but I sit there and read some of my craft books and hope I can do it again in another home.Living in town is OK but I still miss the country and hope we can relocate one more time, hubby says he can't move again but I think he will change his mind by early next year.We do have wonderful neighbors that help us quite often and it is pretty quiet here most of the time so I really can't complain about noise. It has been a very hot summer here and living close to the river is good...in some ways.
We went to lunch with our brother in law this morning and had a fun time,my sister died about a year and a half ago so now it is just our brother in law.His hearing is as bad as mine and he really has to listen carefully to understand what we say, that is so familiar to me!
We are very spoiled and love being that way so our life is good overall. HRinOregon

Good Morning All, IT is pretty quiet here where we live but it is only 7:30 in the morning so traffic is light and people are sleeping in.We had a nice summer rain yesterday and got about an inch of water, the fires are not very far and we drove up to a town called Merlin and turned around about 5mi.from town, looked at the Rogue River then had some lunch at a local restaurant, went home and then the rains came, very nice, brief but welcome, guess some people are suffering from to much rainwater and are getting flooded but it has been very dry out west and the rains are welcome even with the thunder and some lightning. It is sunday morning and Hubby and I are going out to a nice buffet on the river about 9:30.This restaurant has weddings all summer long because of their location which is on the Rogue River.Wonder if we will get to see a wedding today? Well I sure do miss our Selma place but the kittys are doing well and the new tenents are paying their rent on time and they love the place so that makes me happy...somewhat!Sure do miss working with the clay but we will move probably next year and get a place further out in the country,I am not a city person but am doing the best I can.Hubby likes it here but misses the country also.Anyway when we relocate I will make sure I can have a kiln so I can do more pottery work.Well hope all of you have a fun Sunday,Best to all of you, CLinOregon

Hello again,we are now city folks and it has been a very difficult transition! I sold my kilns to the man who is buying our country home.We took the utitity trailer up there and I loaded a lot of my personal pottery and supplies and have brought them to our new place in town. The kilns were getting old and I plan on buying a new one soon, meanwhile I will make polymer clay projects and start with some homemade beads for my jewelry collection.I have so much jewelry made and now plan on makeing more?Am I nuts or what??I plan on emptying one of my large suitcases that is on rollers and using it to tote around my jewelry especially good for shows!
We plan on selling a lot of our "stuff"soon because our garage is absolutely full and we just don't have any more room.
I am still working on my elliptical machine everyday and think it is helping me and my bad back.My Dr.suggested that I lose weight and I know I need to and have lost quite a bit in the last year but now need to get serious again.
It amazes me how we tend to procrastinate.Hubby and I both have needs for certain things,a good computer tech and a general all around maintainence man but we don't look for anyone and our little city is loaded with these folks but we just procrastinate until we are desperate.Suspect others do the same thing, hubby is worse than me but not by far.
We went out to a very good brunch today so dinner will be small and light, maybe will settle for nothing as we may not be hungry, hubby is losing weight faster than I am and is really pleasing his Drs.I still have a long ways to go but slow and steady works for me.
Well hope everyone has a fun filled day,CLinOregon

Good Morning ALL,well here we are living in the city of Grants Pass and so far it is OK.I am a country woman BUT health dictates our move into town.We left the grown kittys behind at the country property as one of them was born there and the other arrived a few months later so the new tenent said he would love to have them and that is the only home they know so I said OK.The new tenent has an older dog but it just stares at the cats and they are growing used to it. I have been without the internet for many days and it is good to have it back.I left my kilns behind temporairly but don't have the right power set up for the kiln anyway so now I am just doing my jewelry and will also do some poly clay items.Hope to be able to set up my kiln in our garage soon!I miss working with the clay and having a nice studio to go to but such is life.Husband just doesn't understand my need to work with the clay but my sales are very slow right now and I may pick up some of my work at one of the galleries.I love making things but am not into selling them so I have quite a collection of pottery.I actually wrapped up some of it and hope to bring it into town soon and yes I will sell some of it.We are going out to breakfast this morning ,hope all of you have a great day, HRinOregon

Well here we are in the midst of moving and of course I am depressed over the whole thing. So much to do.I over did it yesterday and so today I will just "cool my jets"and take it easy.Plan on doing a glaze firing this morning. The man who is going to rent this place has four kilns and is a professinal glass blower and makes his living doing that!I plan on leaving my two kilns until everything else is moved.Renter is an easy going man who looks forward to having ten acres to take care of.We had gotten down to just taking care of one acre and letting the rest take care of itself. The creek is running nicely and our new renter/buyer is impressed with it.We told him in Sept.it slows way down but watch out for the winter waters ,it will come back up with a vengence. The house in town will suit us fine but hopefully we will find something else with a little land around us in about a year.So much to do and we will have a massive garage/estate sale when we relocate.

Well ,he rented a house in town so we are starting to move a little at a time but have many folks who will help us with the big stuff!BIG garage sale coming up in town soon as he doesn't want to rent a large storage space, luckily we rented a place with a large two car garage and that will have to do until we can sell off a lot of our stuff. We have buildings full and will start going through it today. No big rush as our new tenent won't be moving in until June.Hopefully I can get in a couple of firings before we leave,I am taking my two kilns with us and storing them in our garage in town and hope to find a place to "hook them up"as they need special wiring as you all know!Don't think our rental has the wiring we need but Hubby assured me we will probably move again and will find a place with what we need.I sure hope so as I don't want to give up my pottery although the jewelry making is fun also!I really need to start selling and will do so when we relocate.

Good Morning All, living in the country has been a wonderful experience !! Sorry to leave BUT it is time and my Hubby needs to be closer to the hospital as he is now 80yrs.old.Think the man who is renting/buying our place will enjoy it as he has three teen and preteenager boys who he says are a great help and they will take care of our place and try to make it theirs by the end of the year. They also will help us move.We will start looking again for a home in early May and hope we can find a country home that will take our two adult kittys. We are going to rent because Hubby says he can't do the physical work anymore so renting will have to do.
Tsigane, hope you get to stay out in the country for as long as you can, there is something about the peace and quiet that is wonderful.I will miss all of the wild critters, our neighbor who doesn't live that close to us says he will take care of all the wild critters.I don't really care that much for this person because he kills a buck every year but that being said he does NOT waste the meat and I realize that the overabundance of deer makes it hard not to put one in your freezer once a year.I am just not into killing any animal for its skin or meat.I knew a dentist once who would only eat what he killed and spent more time hunting than being a dentist.Oh well such is life.OK what did I make this week??Jewelry and experimented with some new ideas, took a beginning jewelry class and enjoyed it even though I am not a beginner!!Always something new to learn.Well hope everyone has a fun week,I also made several small clay plates, hope to fire them before I store the kiln.
Yes,living in town will be interesting.I too hope to walk a lot more and enjoy the city activities. So much to think about! CLinOregon

I live in a rural area. I love the peace and quiet. However, sometimes I wish I lived somewhere in which I could walk to the market. Or to the pub, the library, and the park. I get so tired of needing a car to get me everywhere and living in a walking community would be so much better for my health!

Hello all,our computer has been "down"for quite awhile and just came back on line a few minutes ago.We are still moving but still haven't found a nice home in the country where we can keep out two adult kittys. We want to rent for awhile and it sounds like country propertys for rent just don't exist. So far every house has been near or in town.We may have to rethink where we locate and settle for an intown home ,hope not!!
My Hubby talked to the man who wants our property the deal is still on and he says he will have our money soon.So much planning to do and the amount of packing is unbelievable as we have lived here for almost eighteen years.I am trying to clean up my studio and do some packing,so much to do,it is almost overwhelming for me.I told Hubby that we will not move untill all the money owed us is deposited into our account.Luckily we are in good shape financially.Hubby is watching the golf tournament in Augusta and we still root for Tiger but looks like he will come in fourth or fifth this year.
I have been making some clay pendants that are coming out quite nice also making other kinds of earrings also.Actually I can hand paint my pendants but I love some of the glazes I use so will probably just use those.I did reorganize my jewelry so it it ready to relocate.CLinOregon

Good Morning All,Well it is finally starting to happen !Looks like we will be moving into town next month ,hopefully we will find an empty nice house closer to our hospital in Grants Pass.Think we may have sold our place out here in the country but have it rented for sure!My husband has severe COPD and has real problems breathing and is on oxygen throughout the day and night.I have a very bad back(spinal osteoarthritis)and have to move slowly and carefully so it is time for us to move.We love living out here but our health is more important.
I did get two very nice vases from the kiln a few days ago,my butterfly vase came out great and also some other smaller things as well. Will put the two vases at our local gallery before artwalk at the end of the month. We are driving over to the coast today so better get my day going,Best to all of you,CLinOregon.

Good Morning All,Congratulations Tsigane, sounds like you are feeling much better and are now able to exercise daily, good for you !!Still hope you will find some time to work in your studio,we look forward to seeing some of your new pottery.
I just finished my butterfly vase and will fire it later this week,am anxious to see the final results I am glazing another vase and have a couple of little candy dishes to fire also(don't want the butterfly vase to be lonely in the kiln)Ha ha!!Anyway Hubby and I are getting serious about selling this place and I need to research several things to check the propertys value and then market it.We may have a neighbor who may have someone very interested,we shall see!!The forestry man came out to our place looked it over and said we need to chean up a lot of underbrush so we are in the process of doing that plus a lot of other things.
I have been exercising on my EL machine everyday and even though I eat more than I should am still losing some weight ! Hope to work with the exercise band today also.
Well need to get my day going hope everyone has a fun and productive day, CLinOregon emoticon

Wish me luck, Claylady! I'm embarking on a month-long fitness revival! Will work biking, dance, or hey, even jumping jacks into my day for the month of April!

Must get my stamina and muscle tone increased for the upcoming May Madness at work!!! My library will be the depository for the school's textbooks, library books will be coming in and I've got to get it all inventoried and shelved.

And I'll be hauling a lot of stuff home for the summer, too. It's very physically and emotionally challenging, so I've got to be in peak condition. Well, "peak" for a 50 year old woman. :)

Good Morning All, I have lost another 1 1/2 lbs, so pleased as thought I had gained even more from my weigh in last Sunday.
Last week I worked on several things as I go to my little studio every eve.I made several hand crafted clay pendants and put a commercial crystal glaze on them, each one a different color, will fire them soon.My large vases are in the kiln and I will bisc fire them soon.
Would love to hear from someone else this is a very lonely site and it shouldn't be.Lots of folks play in the clay and are members of this site.WRITE and let us know what you are doing.

Hello everyone,Hope I haven't become a pest with all my notes but do enjoy writing and hope someone reads them.We (Hubby and myself)were going to drive down to the ocean which is about an hour and a half from our home but I just didn't want to stay that long in the car so we wound up just going out to a new chinese restaurant in Grants Pass which he loves but I just think it is so so.anyway we came home after that.Hubby bought himself a fancy two year old pick up truck last week so of course we had to take that one instead of the car.I can't complain as I have everything that I need to keep me happy and it is his money afterall. We put our large motorhome on the market,we just don't need anything that big!It has all the whistles and bells but is still way to large for just two of us and if he hooked up the car to tow the whole package would be as long as our mobile home so time to get rid of it.I turned seventy last month and am working out on my elliptical machine every day, have lost nearly thirty pounds so far of course I do try to eat less and it seems to be working.Forgot to weigh myself this morning so will wait until next sunday to do that.My pottery/jewelry is coming along and I have made two nice vases, hope they make it through the fire, they are dry now and just waiting for me to finish them.I have a special glaze I bought recently and will use that one.Guess I should take some pics.and send them to this site but alas I am lazy and I probably won't.I made a couple of very nice necklaces and will package them and sell them .....eventually.Well hope someone writes this week, Best to all of you,CLinOregon emoticon

Happy Sunday to you all,I gained 1/2lb.last week so will try to correct that problem this week.We went out to Sunday brunch this morning and it was delicious but of course we ate way to much so will consider it our big meal of the day!I will start to cut back on calories at dinner time that seems to be my weakest time of day but I do love my simple homemade soups so will try to be content with that.
This last week I worked on several things including a new vase which is drying as I write.I had to change the bottom of my large vase that is waiting to be fired, luckily it pulled apart when I tried to lift it and that was a blessing because I saw one corner wasn't very secure on its base ,it now seems to be much more solid and the new base is drying nicely, hope to do a bisc firing soon.I did get a nice glaze firing today and am quite happy with the Duncan kiln I am using.I am careful not to overload the kiln and do all the right things for a good firing, most of the time I get a good firing and am happy with the results.Sometimes NOT.Today was pretty good.I also made a new necklace that came out really nice.Hubby loves it and so I raised the selling price a little on it,packaged it and put it with all the others to be sold, one of these days I will really get with it and put my jewelry and pottery on the internet because I am not good at selling so currently have my work in gallerys.
Beautiful day here in S.Oregon but heard rumors of rain coming so we shall see. CLinOregon

Did a good job exercising last week! Monday, Wednesday, Friday & Saturday I got in about 30 minutes of cardio each day.
Portion sizes are back on track - except I notice when I feel yucky I eat more. Sore throats want salty chips...
Wish the weather here would stop bouncing around. Days of 50 degrees weather followed by freezing spells means immune systems are being battered about like ping pong balls!

Good Morning All, Last week I worked on my jewelry and created some new styles.I discovered fabric earrings and they are a hoot to make, wound up making several pairs and gave a couple to my girlfriend who really liked them.I do need to work on my clay projects this coming week.My tall vase is drying nicely and should be ready to fire soon.Think I will make another bowl this time.I took a couple of arcylic painting classes this month and it was fun but still love working with the clay.Think I will look up some abstract paintings and get some new ideas today. It got cold here in S.Oregon last night. We live back in the hills and thank goodness for our wood stove, hubby gets up in the wee hours of the morning and gets it going good and he goes back to bed for a few hours.I keep my heater going all through the night and last night really needed it.
Haven't weighed myself yet this morning going to do that soon but I have been eating like a pig lately so don't expect good results even though I exercised everyday last week.I even work out on the weekends also.Sundays I usually work out a little less.Tonight think I will make a meatloaf with all the trimmings and freeze the leftovers.Since we sold the big freezer my little refrigerator freezer obviously doesn't hold as much food so we are now buying less food, which we didn't need anyway but my freezer is very full and also the spare freezer which holds a lot but there is still room in it for more FOOD.Last night I only ate a bowl of homemade soup it was wonderful. There is something about homemade soups that I love.Well hope everyone has a fun day,CLinOregon

Good Morning All, Last week I fired several pieces and had a great firing, last night I finished making my second tall vase hope this one makes it.I put small coils all around the outside for extra support and hope it doesn't lean. I discovered fabric cloth for making earrings so made a number of them.Cute!! My girlfriend just loved them so will make more and give her several pairs. They are so easy to make but still take time so need to figure that into the price. All my work is priced very low already.Hope I don't have to start giving my work away as my prices are so low that may be next.Well it is Sunday morning and time to weight myself ,feel heavy so I will find out shortly.

Hello All,today I am seventy years old and am really starting to feel like it.I am putting on a nice dinner party this eve.for a few friends.
I have never made my own sausage. We have a truly wonderful sausage and meat making business about fifteen miles from where we live which is way out in the boondocks. This is not a big company but one that is all we need and they also have a nice little restaurant so a person can buy both their sausage/ meat needs and also have a meal there.Very convienient. We have lived here in S.Oregon for over twenty years and have seen lots of improvements to the little city we are near.
Last week I threw away the tall vase that I made ,fired it and it cracked on one side so will make another one soon, this time I will put small coils on the outside of the vase that should save it.I sold my wheel and just do handbuilding now but there are some problems that I just can't seem to solve so just work around them.Well time to relax before my little party,Best to all of you,CLinOregon

I've been making sausage this week! Italian, chorizo, and mustard venison are now lying in links or patties in the fridge or packaged up in the freezer!

I love the tactile nature of sausage-making. Seems all my favorite hobbies are ones that require getting my hands messy - pottery, gardening, bread-making, and now sausage!

Good Morning Everyone,Well here it it Sunday morning and still very cold outside !I read my other posts and reminded myself about the nesting bowls I started.I haven't worked on them in quite awhile but need to finish them.I still only have the two I made but still want to make at least one more.Last week I made another tall slab vase and I had to rework it every eve. so it would stay together, finally it did and I look forward to firing it soon.It leans a little to one side and I read that I need to put coils on all insides of the vase so will make another one and coil it better but it is a real beauty and will try to send pics.when I can.Poor Hubby didn't sleep well last night he had constant leg cramps because of his diabetis so will take a nap this morning.I had some bad dreams but slept fine otherwise.Guess we will stay in today and I will make some clay pendants later on,using a wonderful commercial crystal glaze called "Monet's Garden",it comes out a dark blue with all kinds of other light colored glazes on top, very pretty glaze.I bought several crystal glazes and hope to use them all on my clay projects.
Well everyone stay warm and dry and enjoy your day,CLinOregon

Good Morning all, glad to hear from someon else.Yes the snow storm was a bad one and lots of folks around here had no power at all for several days. Most of us didn't have any generators either. We have three generators and Hubby has never tried them out so we could have had power if he checked them out.Oh well just hope we don't get another storm like that one,we have had several little pretty snowfalls since but at least the power didn't go off. This morning it was in the low twenties here ,oh so cold !Hubby lit off the wood burning stove and it still hasn't come up to the temperature we want.We are getting along in years now so keeping warm is very important in fact in the summer time we need the cool air but we have a nice swamp cooler for that.We have decided to sell our big stand up freezer,we just have to much food.Well today think I will just stay indoors and hope it warms up outside a bit.Best to all of you and stay warm !!CLinOregon

We were snowed/iced in without power for 4 days. We have neither generator nor wood stove. We put all our food outside in ice chests filled with snow. Cooked on the outside grill. Brought a large propane burner (my husband uses for brewing large kegs of beer) into our downstairs family room and boiled a keg of water. When the propane was shut off, the radiant heat from the keg warmed the room to almost 60 degrees f at times. Also, we used the water for hot drinks, and heated food by putting it in zip-lock baggies and floating it in the keg.
We read to each other by candlelight and invented stupid games to play.
Ran around like children when the power finally came back on!

My studio gets cold in the morning and during the day but in the eve.I warm it up almost everyday.I am still working on my nesting bowls, two are dry but I still want to make two more to go with them, will probably start them this eve.We have been snowed in until a few days ago even though we live on the west coast. We had no phone, power but lots of snow I melted it so we could have water. We did just fine and the wood stove saved us ...again!
I am still going out and working in my little studio every eve, except last week I missed two nights. The snow is finally melting and things are starting to get normal again.Looking forward to New Years Day and the Rose parade in Pasadena,Calif.Hope they don't get any rain.I was raised south of there and always enjoyed the parade but am not much of a football fan.My father and I went to one of the rose parades many years ago, lots of fun.Hope everyone has a fun filled new years day.

Pictures! Pictures! I want pictures! Sounds lovely!

Have I told you that I'm attention deficit?? Well, it's too cold in my pottery studio, so I've been sewing. Something Victorian-esk for a science fiction convention!

Good Morning,Last week I worked on my ceramic nesting bowls, two are done and almost dry enought to fire but I still want to make at least one more for the set.I made several hanging christmas wire snow flakes that really turned out nice.gave most of them away but will make more and try to sell them next year. These are not clay but I do jewelry also and used the beads I have on hand to make the snowflakes. Each one of them are one of a kind.
I will do a bisc firing probably tomorrow not sure yet but the kilns eagerly? await me and I will load the big one tonight.
It would be wonderful to hear from someone else on this site it seems I am almost the only one who writes.

Dear Miss Sigane,Sorry for your loss.I lost both my mother and father a long time ago but still understand what pain and loss you feel.I never knew my mother she died shortly after I was born and my father died when I was a late teen ager.I lost a sister several months ago to cancer and most of my family is dead.I only have one sister left and she lives way down in AZ.so don't see her very often although we commicate often.
Last week I started making a series of handbuilt nesting bowls. They are progressing nicely but I still have a ways to go with them. Also made a set of dinner and salad plates, they are drying and will be fired soon. I also am making some Christmas tree ornaments and will make some more.Today I am going to my first Xmas party this year.Should be a fun day.Good luck to you and keep writing, CLin Oregon

OMG!!! I'm so sorry I've been away! Your teacher sounds like a wonderful person. My mom died this Spring. My dad followed her recently. So I've been.... preoccupied.

Haven't done pottery in awhile, but I'm happy to say that some of my pieces are going to friends as Christmas presents!

Good Morning to all of you. This week I decided to finish a bisc vase that I would like to sell eventually. I have been glazing for a couple of nights now and it is finally almost ready to fire.I also have been making jewelry and between the two of them I stay quite busy.Last week finished my little seahorse brooches and am happy with how they look.Guess I should take pics. and show them on this site but alas I am too lazy to bother and getting very forgetful at times.Old age is a bummer but as long as I can still do my claywork and jewelry I will be happy. This week will design another vase and maybe make some outside critters to hang on the planters.I finished a small whale and my husband really enjoys it.He plays with it when he sits on our front porch and calls it Oscar! So I may make some more hanging whales.Fun to make. CLinOregon

Hello again, forgot to mention that YES Oregon does have some bad critters.Scorpions .timber rattlesnakes (which are plentiful in the summertime) and then there are all the larger more dangerous animals but we love living here, the climate is perfect and we have wonderful quiet neighbors but we do live way out in the countryside but because of Hubbys deteriorating health we will move closer into town next year IF we can wait that long but we love it out here,if two cars come down our little country road at once we call it "gridlock".What a joke that is!!! That almost never happens but we do have neighbors but nobody close.I don't even know my next door neigbors and they have lived next door for about three years. Also the air is so clean and that is important to us.Hubby suffers greatly from severe COPD and is on oxygen most of the time now.He gets wonderul help from our VA which is not to far. Well happy Sunday to all of you, HRinOregon

Good Sunday Morning to all of you !! Last week was a nice quiet week for me.I spent a lot of time in my little studio.Hubby has a friend who may be interested in buying some of my jewelry so I have been inventorying all of my nice little creations so I can give him a great wholesale price as he is going to resell it .I want to get back to the clay.I did make several sweet little seahorse brooches and they came out quite nice.A friend of mine said she has never even seen a live seahorse so I mentioned that now and then I go up to the beautiful awesome Aquarium in Newport,Oregon to see ALL the sea critters and the little seahorses are so special, they have little branch like arms that protect them and some of them get quite large but nothing like the big fish. The seahorses are so cute.I hope Hubby and I can get back to Newport this next week but not sure I will get to see the Aquarium.I have been feeling better both emotionally and physically lately and we will go up to Washington state next week to visit some friends, they have a wonderful remodeled home on the puget sound and I can sit outside on their waterfront deck and see the Olympics in the distance.Well hope everyone has a fun filled day, HRinOregon

poor little lizard, hope it survives your attack. I love the wine and always have 2 small glasses every eve.before retiring. Am going out to my studio and hope I don't encounter any lizards although I did find a live scorpion several months ago managed to kill it before it bit me so guess I am lucky !! Been working on some unique jewelry ideas but still plan on making some one of a kind vases. I draw mine out on paper first then transfer the final drawing to clear plastic then I can keep the design and reuse it.Sales are real slow in our area but we live way out in the country and I have to travel quite aways to either gallery so have to be careful of what I send down to them. Have fun out in your studio, HR in Oregon

Am laughing. Went into my studio tonight to do a little dabbling. I spent the entire time chasing a lizard around with a broom! Poor guy had found his way in and I was trying to herd him towards the door! After about 30 minutes of sweating and crashing about the place I gave up. Tonight I'm trading in clay for a glass of wine.

Well here it is Labor Day once again and I am still trying to figure out how to make my printer print larger, the type is so small I can hardly read it.We just got back from a 7 day cruise in Hawaii but I got sick half way through and didn't get to see Kauii but did get a few pics.of the harbor we were in.Hubby says no more cruises it is just to difficult for him to walk around the ship so guess we will just Hotel it from now on.We did a trip to Cancun,Mexico last year ,an all inclusive and had a fun time suspect that is how we will go from now on if we travel anymore. It is good to be home even though we are both sick with head colds, mine is just about gone but he still has his.He also has severe COPD and gets pnemonia quite easily so we have to be very careful.
I am out in my little studio every night(after he goes to bed) and right now am focasing on jewelry but plan on making another tall vase or maybe a teapot soon.I sell in two gallerys and they always want new work so I need to get with it.The weather out here is fabulous and the humidity is low enough for our swamp cooler to work great it is a little warmer than he likes but I am enjoying the heat as when it stops it will get cold up here.We live way out in the county in a rural setting but as his condition gets worse we will probably move closer to the city which we don't want to do but have stayed out here longer than we should.Ahhh but life is still very good !!You all have a fun and relaxing day, CLinOregon

I love building teapots! (perhaps because I love tea!). Handbuilt wheel doesn't matter. Currently I have 4 in production. The one on my page is the result of a power outage at the annual pottery camp I attend. Our mentor was so worried about not having power for our wheels- all we said was handbuilding. That teapot was in my head fo the better part of a year so it was good to finally realize it!

Hello all, I have rejoined this group because I too am a potter, wonder how many other members are potters also?? Haven't written in a long time trying to lose weight as I have been diagnosed with diabetes 2(like so many others). My real problem is the arthritis in my spine, that really can hurt from time to time but today is a good day for me,I saw the cute teapot in the Principal Potters personal site and realized in all my years as a potter I have not attempted a teapot, several years ago I read a post from a professinal potter and her very detailed description of how to make a teapot,I passed because it looked so difficult and I decided not to attempt one BUT maybe will attempt one now.I sold my two extra kilns and my pottery wheel to our clay distributor recently but I always loved doing handbuilding so that is how I will build my little teapot.I make a lot of jewelry and special made handmade beads also,I stay as busy as I want but thankfully Hubby supplies us with our money needs because if I had to make it as a professinal potter we would starve to death !!most of our potters are getting ready for our big annual pottery show in Nov,I look forward to visiting although I don't show there.

Oh no, I made a small batch of cone 10. A friend of mine fires to cone 10 regularly and graciously allows me to glaze and fire at her studio. I have lots of cone 6 glazes and continually test to try to find the magic glaze or combination. emoticon

The porcelain I am currently working with is cone 6. I fire at this temperature normally. I have used a cone 10 porcelain, but I don't have glazes to fit that temperature. I am looking forward to returning to stoneware.

You are WAY more advanced than I. I've been puttering in pottery for quite some time, but didn't glaze a single thing until last week!
I admire anyone who can successfully work in porcelain - that's very slippery stuff! Do you fire it the same as other clay?

Anyone have any experience with Barnard slip substitute? Bought some today to mix up a glaze. Oh and porcelain, I bought a box of laguna frost. I am finishing it off. Very persnickety on the wheel!

Happy potting!

I have been working with porcelain for over a year now. It takes getting use to but I love it. It is a lot less messy since you do not want to use much water. Right now I am taking a class on throwing bowls. I am creating large bowls but am having issues with them not turning out completely round. I know the clay is centered but some how when I bring them up something happens. I am working on this.

Firing in a popcorn tin sounds very interesting. Be sure you let us know if you do this. I have been making bowls. I am taking a class on bowl making and two weeks ago we had the first class. I made two bowls then class was over. The next week the instructor was ill so class was canceled. Since one of the things the instructor wants to work on is trimming the bowls I knew the two I made two weeks ago would be to dry to trim so I have made six at home. Now I need to figure out how to get them to class without ruining them. I have also been working with this really soft clay. It is a cone fire 6 porcelain and it is wonderful,to work with. Because it is so soft I have no trouble centering it. It is now my favorite clay. Pat

I've been collecting metal cans - mostly those huge popcorn tins you see at Christmas - because I'm dying to try firing pottery in a trash can! Yup! I figure if the ancients could fire pottery without an electric kiln, then so can I! I'll wait until the weather warms up.
My studio is a glassed-in back porch - quite chilly in the winter and the clay is most difficult to work, so I usually work on other projects in the winter. I've gotten quite good at bread baking this year!

My friend visited this weekend to give me a few lessons and it was AWESOME! I posted a photo of the results in our photo section!
Things I saw that surprised me: 1. she didn't throw the clay onto the spinning wheel-head. The wheel was at a complete stop, and she simply adjusted it in the center! (That's what I do! I guess I'm not cheating after all!) 2. she cuts the piece off the wheel-head while it's still, too! Throws some water down on it and then drags the wire through the water and the piece all in one swift movement! 3. I watched her fix a vessel that had started to tear on the wheel. Still don't know how she managed it!
Can't wait to get back on the wheel!

You're not alone here - we're just very quiet - and probably a little distracted with life.... and it sounds like life is hitting you, too. Sorry about the medical issues. I have my own and I know it's not fun! It was said health issues that brought me to Sparkpeople in the first place. After ...has it been five years?... I can say that (for my age) I'm very fit and healthy! But it's a lot of hard work and sometimes I just hate it! It would be so easy to eat what I want when I wanted and sit on my butt when I need to be doing my exercises, but when I do I PAY for it in an array of aches and pains that would amaze one! Pottery is my reward to myself. I won't get on the wheel unless I've done my workout and had my bottle of water. Like a balanced diet, it's becoming a part of my healthy lifestyle.

Well here I am all by myself so will just write a note to me.Last night and the night before I made a couple of nice handbuilt plates. They are not standard in shape or size but I really do like them anyway.I keep a couple in my home and use them almost everyday. My sister sent me a small platter of Goodies a few years ago from Harry and David(now bankrupt)anyway I now use the "platter" for the template of my plates. It is perfect!!I also have been experimenting with outdoor hanging planters.Decided that small is good so have made a hanging planter for one flowering plant or a couple of herbs.I did a bisc firing in my little scutt (kiln) a few days ago and it works great!Got a good firing out of it, now for the glaze firing next.Today I have to see the Dermatologist for the pre cancer spots on my face. She will freeze a couple and then I shouldn't have to go back there for awhile.Oh well it has to be done and I am grateful that we have the tecnology to deal with these nasty little problems. My weight is another issue!Sparkpeople helps and I do enjoy reading the days messages.Sometimes I even feel motivated to do something besides just cooking and eating!(and of course playing with the clay).Sorry if I am going on here but it feels good.CL in Oregon

Good Morning, practice, practice and practice some more, that is what makes a good potter.I haven't worked my wheel in quite some time you make me realize that I should really get on it and try to throw some cups and bowls so will do that soon.Patience is a big problem with pottery so many of us want instant results so we take shortcuts and that just doesn't work with some types of pottery just keep on practicing on your wheel you will be amazed at how quickly your work will start pleasing you, good luck,CLin Oregon

I have been busy making (trying to make) small cups. Most turn out to be bowls so I've been experimenting using smaller sizes of clay balls when I start out. Most end up back in the bucket (still), but I'm making progress! I watch videos of potters using a wheel - they are so fast! I'm not there yet!

Successfully reorganized my pottery "studio"! Husband's cases of wine bottles and other tools are still there, but piled just out of my way - dueling hobbies! Bought a book on kilns so I can become a bit more savvy before I try to convince Hubby that my kiln will get more use than his dream sawmill.
Spent a glorious morning wedging clay and reconditioning clay from my mud bucket! I even sat at the wheel a made a few cups! Only kept one, though. Did all that while listening to Enya - her music is perfect for playing in the mud!

Good Morning all, I got a nice load of glazed pottery from my kiln this morning. All of course was not perfect but am happy with what I did get.My little beads came out wonderful and I gave them mixed colors to see what would happen and none of the glazes ran which pleased me.I do have a large wall hanging that I will re fire after I decide what color to add to the existing glaze, it still has a ways to go before it is done!I do like the abstract designs best and they work for me.Hope everyone out there who loves the clay is having a fun day with it.Best to you all, CLin Oregon

Good Morning all, Last night(being monday, sometimes I have to remind myself)I made another herb planter. This one is a bit more formal with very square sides and edges.Everything was measured out and it turned out nice.I haven't decided if I will make a large handle for it or not.I made the coil handle and it is resting next to the planter and tonight I will make my decision.(big deal ha ha)!!Today I will take my latest hanging planter down to our gallery in Grants Pass where hopefully it will sell soon.I will see my dermatologist this morning for all the little skin problems on my face and hopefull won't need any surgery soon.Gotta get back on track with my weight problem so much good food out there and I want to eat it all!!!We are looking forward to the fourth and lots of good BBQ.Well hope everyone is doing well and having fun with the clay,Best to you all, CLin Oregon

Good Morning all, Glad to hear from both of you, miss Turtleraskin and miss Pleep. Thanks for responding to my post.Yes the beads are fun but sometimes I go to my studio and just sit and enjoy my surroundings.Last night I just played around at my studio and did little odd things (like reading a pottery or jewelry book)and glazed a few beads.Need to clean out my studio as it collects claydust and THAT can build up over time and cause breathing problems.I usually wash down my concrete floors more often but have been feeling lazy lately but need to get this done.I wear a simple facemask covering while sweeping and washing the floor. All you potters who have a separate clay room(and it should be separate from your home)be sure to vacumn or wash your floor fairly often as the clay dust is NOT something you want to be breathing!! The commercial and some of the homemade glazes are safe BUT it is still a good idea to wash up all your pottery tools in very hot water,by hand not in the dishwasher from time to time.My studio is a mess and really needs serious cleaning but that is so boring and time consuming that I just don't do it as often as I should. If you are working from a bedroom just be sure you vacumn often and air that room out or make sure you have plenty of fresh air going to that room.Anyway having fun with the clay is the most important thing but hope you all do remember to clean out your room often.CLin Oregon
PS those of you using commercial sites like colleges or private studios should ask questions about how often the floors are washed.Claydust is not deadly but over time can cause health problems to some folks so cleaning is important.

Hey everybody! Things have been busy for me so I haven't spent as much time working in clay as I'd like. The big piece I was working on is still drying, so I'm going to check it today and see if it's ready to go in the kiln. I'm super excited to see how it comes out; I'll post pictures.

I hope you get a chance to work on some plates today, PLPeep; and Claylady, those beads sound great. Both of you make me want to get my own kiln, but I know for the amount of time I'd use it that's crazy talk!

ClayLady That is great that you will be able to sell your little beads. I promised myself tomorrow I will get back out to my studio and throw more plates. Funny how time seems to slip by so fast and before I know it nothing has been done. Tomorrow will be my gift to myself spending the day playing in clay...it is my birthday so I will celebrate it this way. It is nice to have a place to come (this SparkTeam) and discuss my passion with those who truly understand. Thanks Pat

Hello all, Today I worked (volunteered)at our local gallery in Grants Pass,Oregon. It is a full gallery with all mediums represented and a very well managed gallery.Sales are slow but we live in a very popular tourist area and sales do pick up in the summertime. My manager loves my earrings and wants me to bring down a large bowl of my little heart shaped beads to sell.Good idea!!I have thought that the suppliers make more money than the artists so will make even more styles of beads for our gallery.Hope everyone is having fun with the clay and making something that pleases them,CL in Oregon

Hello to all, Miss Pleep how are those plates coming along? Thanks for the latest note I appreciate your interest.I use a "bead tree" to hang my beads on when they are being glaze fired and sometimes the holes do close up BUT not usually.I bought a second bead tree so now I can fire twice as many beads as before. They are sure fun to make.Figured if I make a lot of them I should't lose that many.So far so good but still may hand paint them instead of glazing them.I usually have to refire all my beads a second or even third time before they get a finished look, using a acrylic paint I would only do them once and they are ready to go but the glaze does give them a more professional look.Try making some of those little three legged pots they are really fun to create.I made a small one just to see how it looked and will now make some more of them, also need to make a few coffee cups.CL in Oregon

i haven't watched the video yet but will be sure to do that. Glad your load of pottery turned out without too many issues. It seems like there should be something you could put in the hole so the beads don't fire closed. But I am also pretty sure there is so nice paint out there you could use too. Pat

Good Morning all, I did a glaze firing Sunday and monday found a pretty nice load of pottery.A very nice hanging planter come through and lots of jewelry pieces including several of my little heart shaped beads.I did make one mistake,I glazed several of my little beads white and it ran slightly, filled in the little holes I put through the beads BUT all was not lost,I just used the wire already through my beads to make acceptable hangers for these beads. From now on I think I will just use acrylic paint on my beads so now am looking for some "upscale"acrylic paint.I need to make more of these beads also.Hey how about some other folks writing in and telling us about your clay experiences! Why don't you watch the video clip on ceramicartsdaily.com(its on now)and learn some new techniques??Good site. You don't have to buy the video but if you watch the clip you will learn how to make a three legged pot or coffee cup.I think I will try this technique tonight in my studio.Best to you all,CL in Oregon

Thanks so much for the help, I will reapply the wash where it has come off and not take all of it off and redo the whole shelf. It is so nice to be able to talk to someone who can help. Pat

Hello, glaze on your kiln shelves isn't a problem just leave on the existing wash and add more to your shelves, sometimes to heavily appied wash may cause flaking but shouldn't get into your glaze so I wouldn't let the wash get to thick on your shelves.I have never had a problem with that until recently and I found after a glaze firing the wash was starting to come off the shelf so I just brushed off the excess and haven't had a problem since then just make sure there is some wash on your shelves. I am trying to get back into the studio. I have a question...the last glaze firing I did left glaze on my kiln shelves. I did have kiln wash on them and have removed the glaze, my question is do I remove all the kiln wash and reapply fresh coats or do I just put the wash where I have scrapped off the glaze? In my research I got conflicting advice, so I was wondering if any of you had experiance with this. This is the first time I have had to deal with this issue. Thanks for any help.

Good Morning all, We just got back last night from a five day trip up north to Wash.State.We drove the whole way and had a pretty good time.Visited with our good friends in Puget sound, spent two nights next to the ocean in our time share unit and then drove home yesterday, long drive but it was worth it!!Now I can get back to my little studio and create some new things.Got lots of compliments on the jewelry I made,I have so much of it now.Hubby and I are gaining back our weight so today we will get serious about losing it!
The kittys were happy to see us and our good neighbor took care of them for us.Now we will start planning the next trip, this one will be longer and much further away, probably Hawaii.and all the other islands.Well good to be home and will start some new project tonight.HR (claylady)in Oregon

I am starting new today. I will go make some more plates and see if I can make them bigger. I always take a little break between completing a project and starting a new one. But I am ready to see if I can improve on what I have learned. Pat
