I have a friend, she's 88, and has Wonderful asparagus and rhubarb !
She takes her kitchen scraps and a bit of water and whips them up in her blender.
She then pours the slurry around the asparagus bed and the rhubarb...(once/month)
I've never seen such great beds !

They are very voracious feeders. Either well composted cow manure or some blood and bone should keep the plants happy

Jealous, my rhubarb plant won't grow very big to harvest. I lost count of how many years it has been since I planted it.

Linda, I didn't know that ! I've read (years and years ago) that garlic is good for dogs to keep fleas and ticks at bay !
Well, I guess it has changed ! Thanks for the heads up.

Nope Linda I've tried all sorts of food recipes and even the straight raw food diet but he just won't eat it.

I don't know what the cat food is like in the US but we have a couple of really good brands here that are very good.

If I could just get a good supply of mouse and lizard meat, I'd be sure he'd eat it but any other stuff he just won't have it

No. Garlic and onion are not good for cats. It is bad for them, and can be toxic.

Hi When I make my dog food, I add garlic powder...I read somewhere that it helps with the flea and tick situation.
I wonder if it would be good in your cats food, too ?

FLOWERDALEJEWEL this is not food for me (tho I would be happy to eat it, since it tastes good.). Maybe your kitty does not like the spices you put in it? I add no seasoning or spices to the food I make the kitties, except for a tiny bit of salt. The salt helps in preserving it, and is in regular cat food that you buy in the stores. Cats do actually need a small amount of salt, as most animals do.

I'd love it if my cat would eat my food, but he won't. He only picks at roast chicken and can only muster up a couple of nibbles for raw meat.

He likes kitten food so in order for him to eat that's what he gets

Good morning everyone. Well, back to the regular grind. Today, I will be baking bread.

Yesterday I ended up making cat food. I made 16 jars. This batch I am calling Shepherds Pie Cat Food, and is made with sirloin beef steak (that I bought on sale), Chicken giblets, potato, carrots, peas, and sweet potato, all blitzed together in the food processor. The meat makes up over 3/4 of the ingredients, since cats need high protein food. I add the vegetables for their nutrient quality and for fibre. I found that when I did not add it, the kitties became constipated. This ratio seems to be working very well for them, and they are very healthy on it.

I was inside all today so I put together dinner for tonight and tomorrow night as well.

My lovely handyman Simon, left me a book on sausage and salami making so I'm going to think about making salami and some sausages. I have the mincer and sausage making gizmos on my mixer and I did do them a long time ago so I figure I'll give them a try again.

That's a lot of chives Patti! I think I'd get twice that with my Parsley, but I usually freeze it so I can use it in Tabouli, I eat that a lot.

I'm still picking my apples as I need them as I don't want them hanging around the house to get soft.

I've still got herbs that I need to dry and store and I'll get around to preserving the apples when all of these doctors appointments go away.

I have an appointment with the ear specialist tomorrow, I'm hoping he'll be able to fix this echoing in my ear and head, it's driving me up the wall

I planted my potatoes yesterday and my hanging shoe bag. I planted basil and parsley and 4 kinds of lettuce. All seeds in the bags !
Cut the grass, some laundry, hooped and harvested a ton of chives.
Most of the chives will be dried and some will go into the freezer.

Well, I managed to get Mom's computer working for her yesterday. Now I need to get her printer hooked up. I think I will wait a couple days before tackling that. I need a couple days to destress after doing the computer. LOL
I need to worry about other things for a while now. I had wanted to take one of our fur-kids to visit my dad and grandma, in the next couple days. That will be stressful enough. Who knows... maybe one day, I will be allowed to do what I would like to do, for the day. LOL

I've still got apples to do, but with the stupid hospitals making and cancelling appointments and all my other appointments, it's looking like another 2 weeks before I'll be doing anything emoticon

Yesterday, I made a stuffed chicken and dressing using a frozen chicken and bread, canned broth and celery, herbs that I dried from my garden and left over corn on the cob.
The only thing fresh I used was the onions in the stuffing/dressing.

Now I have 2 dinners in the freezer ! Bonus !

I took out 3 lbs of ground beef and 1 lb of ground pork and made meatballs...
4 doz medium size and 1 doz. large for sub sandwiches...
Cooked them in my canned tomato juice and homemade past and my diced tomatoes.
My house sounds so Good !!!

I will package them up in meal size containers and freeze them along with the sauce.
I should have checked out how to pressure can them...but I think they are to be only partially cooked so they don't break a part....mine are fully cooked...

I made a big pot of chicken stock yesterday.
One of our local discount stores had chicken legs and thigh quarters on sale for .49/lb.
They were sold in 10lb bags,,,i got 2 !
one bag was divided and put in the freezer, the other in the pot.
I'm not sure if I will just can the stock or make soup and can that.

My pantry is coming up to be overloaded. I did some more tomatoes today, there's so many of them and I'd rather can them than see them go off.

Hopefully I'll be doing the last of my eggplants tomorrow. I had to clip my dog Bruno today, he's a Lhasa Apso and basically a walking hairball. He's now clipped to the extreme, but he's happy and cool.

I blame hubby for waking me at 5:30 this morning. But I rolled out of bed and dealt with the leftover turkey. I made 1 kit for Hot Turkey Sandwiches and 3 meals Turkey Casserole, finishing up my frozen peas, sugar snap peas. But I had to deal with it because I had a staff meeting after school.

I think ours would get much bigger than they do if the parrots would just leave them alone. You should see the garden path with bits of chewed apple and leaves all over the place. Don't get me started about the apple bits in the water gutters!!!

I'm almost ready to pick the regular apples off the tree. I'm actually going to do some applesauce this year as well as regular stewed apples and I might try my hand at those crisp apple slices if I can find a recipe for them.

They sound like crab apples Patti.

I usually make jelly with them but I haven't been using much jam and jelly here. I was thinking about either an apple brandy, like a Calvados, or some apple syrup

I don't know what was up with yesterday...It took us soooo long to boil 45 gallons of sap.
We started at 6:00am and I finally finished it at 11:30pm and got 1.25 gallons !!!!
YIKES !!! That's 17.5 hrs that should have taken about 8-10 hours.
I did notice that the barometer was showing a low pressure day, though !
So our total so far is 4.75 gallons.

For any one with kitties, who may like to try this, this is how I made my cat food...

First of all... you need to have a pressure canner, and good quality jars, with no chips on them. It is now recommended that canned meat be pressure canned.

I just nosed around town, and bought meat that was on sale. I found chicken was the cheapest. I also bought some cheaper beef and liver, and cheap frozen fish. I made 3 varieties.

To make the food, I used this method, but with each different meat.

For example... For the chicken, I mixed the chicken with a package of chicken gizzards. For about 8 whole legs of chicken, (meat and skin removed from the bone after cooking) I added about 3 cups of cooked brown rice, and 2 cups of cooked peas. When I cooked the chicken and gizzards. I only added a pinch of salt. Once everything was cooked, I blitzed everything in my food processor with some of the cooking liquid, and canned it in half pint jars. It made about 16 half pint jars. You need to add a fair bit of cooking liquid when blitzing it. It should look a bit like baby food.
I processed my cat food for about 70 minutes at 12 - 13 pounds pressure.

The beef I mixed with liver, and for the fish, I just used 3 varieties of cheap fish. They each got about the same amount of peas and brown rice.

You can also substitute the peas with pumpkin or sweet potato, which are healthy for them as well. I add the small amount of rice and vegetables, for the vitamins in them, and to give them a bit of soluble fiber in their diets. A bit of soluble fibre can help prevent gastric problems in kitties.

Also... in the bottom of each jar, I add the contents of 1 vitamin C capsule. This helps preserve the food, and helps make the other vitamins and minerals more usable for the kitties.

The price will depend on how much you spend on the meat. I looked for good deals. emoticon

All I have to can around here at the moment is some Rhubarb. I'm not far from having to pick and do something with all the apples on the tree and by the look of it I'm going to have more Capsicums to can as well

I am in the process of making my cats food. So far, I have prepared 12 half pint jars of beef and liver cat food, 12 jars of fish cat food, and I am now getting ready a batch of chicken and gizzards for the cats. I am not sure how many jars will get filled with the chicken one, It is a larger amount then the other 2 batches. I am just getting them into the jars. I just started actually processing in the pressure canner, the first batch of beef and liver. It still needs to process for about an hour.

I am glad that I am doing this. It is much higher quality, than most food on the shelves, as it is human grade meat, and it costs half the amount that the expensive varieties of canned cat food costs. And as far as I am concerned... it is worth it, since they are not puking after eating this food. When giving them the store bought canned food, they puked every day. I had a small issue regarding puke yesterday, but that was because one of my kitties had a hairball, which will happen from time to time, regardless of what they are fed. Tis the season for hairballs, after all... (spring)

I watched a video on canning pork yesterday...I had a 10 lb. pork shoulder in the freezer. Now it's thawed and ready to be cut up into cubes....and seasoned.
I'll can then in pints.
Whiles shopping yesterday, I got 2 huge stalks of celery for 1.29 ea. I will can those in half pints.

I looked up the Fillmore container site, they sure have a lot of different kinds of jars and bottles, I noticed on some of their canning jars they say they are good for hot fill and boiling water bath, wondering it that means they are not good for pressure canning?

Oh I noticed they have the new violet jars, I haven't gotten any of the new vintage colored ones but I like them all!

I have used the pressure canner a few times already, to can soups with meat in them, and for pork and beans. It will see a lot more use, once the season for canning is upon us. (once our garden is producing.)

Yep life's always good with no cat puke on the rugs emoticon emoticon

I'm going to pick the last of my eggplants and freeze some grilled slices ready for moussaka etc. The rest I'll marinate and can. I'm going to prune the bushes and leave them over Winter (after I insulate them of course). They say they will come back in Spring and as they were really good plants that produced a lot, I'll see how they go

Tomorrow we will be doing our shopping, and I am going to get a bunch of smaller sized jars, to use in making my own pressure canned cat food. We will also be looking out for cheaper meats to use in making the cat food as well.

I noticed that when I feed our kitties the cat food that I made from our rejected meat from our freezer, that I canned, they do not puke.. When ever I try to sneak in a can of cat food from the store, they start puking again. Thus... they are getting food that I make from now on. It beats having to clean cat puke off of the floor and furniture every other day.

Today, my Mother, I and a friend went to church. We decided to check out my friends church. She is Catholic. The Catholic church here, is very similar to the Lutheran church that we used to go to, a few decades ago. The service was beautiful, and reminded me of how the services used to be like almost 3 decades ago, in the Lutheran church, before they started changing their worship services around... I found it refreshing, to experience that style of service again.
Mom and I are planning to go to at least a few more services at the church my friend took us to. I might choose to stay with this one. I felt refreshed, after walking out of the service there, and that is truly what counts.

It's good that you found somewhere with the bottles you liked.

I made crumpets years ago and they are really scrumptious. Trouble is they really do use a lot of butter when you toast them!!

I made English muffins once and they worked out really well as well.

Patti you can buy them in bulk on ebay.au. If I can buy on ebay all over the world surely you can buy them on our ebay!!. I haven't gone through the whole page but the smaller ones I have used would be equivalent to a 1/2 pint I think (1 1/4 cups)

Just click onto the first item and go to the distributors store, check for preserving jars and ask them if they'd ship to the US. I can't hurt to try. With the Aussie dollar languishing around the .75cent US dollar mark you'd get a pretty good deal.

I use the 1 pint bottles as well but I haven't checked the store to see if they have them.

Here is the page at ebay
