I don't think I've used shortening since I was in school ....... many, many moons ago!!
Lard or dripping as my Mum used to call it (she used to clarify all the roast drippings) make the best pastry, extremely short. The only down side is the high saturated fats, but if you don't have it for every meal I can't see what the problem is.
