GEORGIEGURLZ I hope your problem with the tomatoes is cured. We got some plants one year that had blight and it got in our soil and from then on we had a problem with it. Hope that is not the case for you.

The Rutabagas take a bit of time to get going but once they take hold off they go. Ours are looking really good at the moment, we're looking like we are going to have a bumper Winter crop of veggies here

I have finally almost got all of my garden planted. I had alot of volunteer tomato plants come up this year. I was going to leave some of them in my garden. Last year my tomatoes had what I thought wasf late blight. The volunteers started showing signs of blight. I pulled them up and replanted. I am not dealing with that again.
I replanted tomatoes today, planted some Rutabaga seeds.

I have some sugar cane mulch in the shed that I was thinking of putting on the veggie garden, it's a lovely soft mulch which is easy to spread

Planted marigolds around my tomatoes and put one of my extra squash plants in a five gallon bucket with holes punched in the bottom.

Mulched with pecan tree tassels.

I am thankful.

We have been thinning out squash plants and have no one to give them to. Wish you lived closer to us too, Patti.

Patti, I wish we were close by, I've got some little baby squash plants that need a home! So sorry to hear about your plant nursery. Is there a local place where you can get seedlings for a reasonable price? Sometimes people will post on Craigslist that they have seedlings for really good prices.

Planted marigolds this morning to keep my tomatoes company.

I am thankful.

That's a bummer Patti. I have a heavy duty plastic drop cloth that I can cover and uncover over my raised bed where the squashes are. If it feels like a frost (usually my nose tells me) I cover and peg it down, then take it off in the morning. It's like a mini greenhouse

We cook turnip greens like spinach in this part of the world. It's one of my favorite veggie dishes! Especially with cornbread!

I got most of my garden beds done between yesterday and early this morning. I am using pecan tree tassels for mulch. We had a ton of them so I thought I'd put them to work. Four beds done and another halfway done and one more left to do.

I am thankful.

Ughhh cleaning the fridge, another job on my "to do" list emoticon

Everytime I walk past the garden beds I always pick weeds out of it, very easy if you do it when they are young, they just don't want to come out when they get a little bigger.

Well I started to replant the extra turnip plantlets but that got old very quick, I've never seen so many seeds germinate out of a packet!!! Looks like a salad of tiny turnip greens is in order for all of those plantlets I just don't need.

Spent some quality time in the garden today. I have 7 raised beds. One is dedicated to herbs and most of it re-seeds itself and volunteers new plants. Of the six others, I have four finished and only two left. Of those, I've got the dirt ready, but just ran out of steam and daylight before I got the tomatoes in. Both of those beds will be tomatoes.

I have some plants left over. I'm going to give my neighbor some and plant others in 5 gallon buckets with holes in the bottom. We'll see what happens.

I used something new for mulch this year... pecan tree "worms." The little dangly things that fall off pecan trees. We had a big pile of them and I though... hmmm I could probably mulch with those. We'll see how that little experiment goes.

-Jennifer

I am thankful.

Today's tasks: Clean out the fridge! Wash down the walls and toss the stuff that went and hid in the back!

Planting: cabbage, a variety of peppers, the rest of the basil, brussels sprouts, and some flowers. Possibly nasturtium seeds (they're food AND flowers...)

Going to grill up some country ribs later today. Debating between a mustard BBQ adaptation, or using a jar of tomato sauce I'm currently thawing (one that I canned last year that didn't seal).

Yep, there I am, swimming through the desert sands. Might just be a mirage, after all. But this is life, and we learn best about it if we explore it, and take our chances. A life unexplored, after all, is one of the saddest things out there.

Jules we just start our on plants from a sweet potatoes that we get at the store. You can put it root side down in a jar of water or root it in wet sand. I stick tooth picks in the potato for it to rest on so not too much is submerged in the water. You will get several plants from one potato.

Patti when we were in Missouri we alway had sweet potatoes growing in the garden. Not sure how your climate in Ohio where you live is. Dad taught me to plant them in a raised ridge because they do better in a well drained area. They don't do well if it is too wet. Something for you & Jules to keep in mind when watering your container sweet potatoes.

Sweet potatoes like hot but not so much the cool. We have hot days & cool night and found the first year when we planted them in the ground they didn't do well. Last year tried planting some in a bucket on the patio & they did great!

I'd like to grow sweet potatoes, are you talking about the white varieties or the yellow one that we call Kumara?

I don't know if they will grow in my area, it gets very hot here in Summer but the nights can get cool.

We've had a cold wet couple of days and with the warmth still in the soil the veggies have shot up like you wouldn't believe. The turnips now look like hairs on a dogs back, I'll have to get in there and thin them out, I'll try to transplant them to another place if I can, I'd hate to waste such strong plantlets.

My pumps footvalve is acting up and the water pump is losing it's prime, I've fixed all the other things that seemed to go snafu and this is the last to fix. Trouble is it requires someone to get in the creek (very cold) to re centre the pump hose. I'm hoping it rains just enough so I don't have to worry about it for a while. I do have a gravity fed water tank that I can use, it's slow but it's got 10000 gallons in it so there's plenty in there to water.

I do the same thing Jules...
I line them up on a table in my living room and as they ripen, we eat them or I freeze them. The frozen ones, I use in stews or soups thru the winter.

I wish you were here, too, Nasreen.

I pulled up my tomato plants over a month ago and believe it or not we are still eating what is left of them. I pulled all the green ones and let them ripen on their own and they are still feeding us.

I think we'll be finished with them by the end of next week emoticon

Found my Mr. Stripey tomato plants at a green house...3.49 per plant. I bought 2..
I usually pay 1.00 per plant at a local discount store...
Went to a yardsale that had perennials and bought mini hostas. the leaves are only 3 inches long and the plant gets to be only about 6 inches wide. Not sure what to do with them, but they were so unique I had to buy them.

Rotten frosts sneak up when you least expect them. I end up covering my raised beds anyway just in case.

Jules, DH and I got a good laugh out of your post. Neighbors are too close to use the pellet gun. Someone would report us! LOL

Martylynn your bird problems sound like ours here with cockatoos and parrots. They are the most destructive of birds, lovely but not when they are eating all of your apples or tomatoes.

I think I'd still probably let hubby use the pellet gun season or no season. It's not as though they make a lot of noise and you might get a meal or two.

It is looking like we will be replanting a lot of the garden. We are overrun with quail. They are cute but destructive! They are really enjoying the buffet that we have provided for them. We had some problems last year but I think this year they invited all their kin from all over the county to join them. DH put cages around the plants they have not managed to eat or snip off. Who knew they liked tomatoes and eggplants. They eat the romaine lettuce as fast as it comes up and we have small craters all over the garden from their dust baths. Thank goodness DH put a chicken wire cage over the cucumbers when they were planted. Starlings just nipped them off last year. They didn't eat them just bit them off at the ground. As I type this I hear Quail calling all over the place outside. At first our dog would bark at them but now she just lays and stares at them They even cut across our fenced in yard where she is now. DH said last night he is ready to get the pellet gun out. I pointed out there is a season on Quail and May is not when it is! Can you tell we are frustrated!

Good Morning...I lay down newspaper and then straw, NOT Hay !!!
This year, I just did the straw as with the paper, the ground gets to compacted and no air.
Then in the fall we just rototill it in and instant compost.

What is it made of? I would love to use something other than black plastic because it is just a mess... even the kind that is perforated. I do think we have something that is made of recycled fiber or paper or something. I'll look for that. Thanks for suggesting.

I am thankful.

Do you have weed mat over there? I layed weed mat down on all of my raised beds before filling with soil. It is porous so the water goes through but the grass etc doesn't grow through

It rained here last night and is still sprinkling this morning. My little seedlings are sitting on the picnic table/garden staging area wondering what comes next. I didn't use black plastic last year and had to weed all summer. This year I want to put down plastic again. I hope to pick some up tonight on the way home from work so I can get them tucked into their beds tomorrow. I leave for Washington Sunday morning at 5am and won't be back until Tuesday, so i definitely need to get this done before I go. My DH would do it for me if I asked, but I love putting my babies in their beds so much, I am reluctant to pass it off to him. Especially since it would just be another chore to him and it's a pleasure for me.

I am thankful.

I actually looked at the Collard greens seeds but decided not to get them. I think they'll be way too high in Vitamin K, my brother (whom I care for) is on Warfarin so he has to watch his Vitamin K intake. He loves Swiss Chard so I like to have that growing in the garden.

I'm trying again with the Cabbage, last time I grew them I had trouble with white butterfly, but I think the gardens this year are way more healthy, if that makes any sense, so I don't think I'll have a problem, if I do, I'll try one of the organic sprays available.

Did some weeding in my raised beds and sorted through my impulse-buy seedlings.

I was happily surprised to see I had picked up some Patty-pan squash, too, along with the list of things below. I bought 22 tomatoes and about 12 squash. No way in the world that I can put all those in my little garden plot, but that's okay... I have folks I can share with. I'll try to give the seedlings a nice start in life and then send them on to other folks that are also getting a late start here due to weather.

Flower - it is so nice to hear about your winter garden down under. Good luck with your cabbage. In my part of the country we grow turnips (for the greens) and collards in the fall and early winter. My brother has luck with cabbage, but I have never had much luck with it myself.

I am thankful.

Excellent Jennifer, that'll keep you busy for a while!!

I planted some cabbage seedlings yesterday and I think that'll be my lot for Winter. Have to dig up the Jerusalem Artichokes (Sunchokes), I love them even though we call them "fartichokes" for a very good reason

I went by the produce market and bought gardening plants without planning my garden first. I've got a feeling I'm going to have a weird jumble garden, but it's all stuff I love.

I got several different kinds of tomatoes, including Romas, Better Boys, the little yellow pear tomatoes and an heirloom variety that I can't remember now. Ichiban and globe eggplant. Cayenne and some other hot peppers. I think I also got a sweet pepper, but can't remember. Boston Pickling cukes. Straight necks and zukes. That will get me off to a good start and I can plant seeds for any other spaces I might have... IF I have any spaces.

I always find the pots that have multiple plants in them and carefully separate. It makes me feel like I'm getting away with something.

Seedling inventory and plot planning tonight after work.

I am thankful.

I use raised beds and trellises in the raised beds for vining plants. Last year I grew potatoes in black plastic garbage bags that I poked holes in. They were filled with compost and potting soil. It was fun to harvest. I just slit open the bags and found my harvest, then poured the used dirt into tubs to re-use.

I am thankful.

I have a friend on facebook that uses straw bale for gardens. There's no digging for my potatoes and the bed is ready for something else after the potatoes are finished.

I did a no dig garden one year but I've found better results with the raised garden beds.

Hey Jules...
I plant my potatoes in bushel baskets
and old galvanized wash basins...of course with holes in them.
Then when they are ready, I just dump them over and get all of my bounty...
No need for digging.

My neighbor build a rectangle with straw (NOT Hay) bales, one deep and fills the center with good soil. Then when ready, he removes the straw bales and scoops out his potatoes.
He uses his straw bales for ground cover for the winter. Oh some of it he turns in his gardens soil to self compost. The rest goes around his blueberries.

Patti I planted some kohl rabi seedlings yesterday as well.

The raised beds are great, when you are finished with one crop, it's so easy to top it up with new soil and fork through some cow manure and they are ready again for planting.

I'm actually going to build a couple more for later in the year, I'm doing a big one for potatoes just in front of my water tanks, it's a nothing spot so I figure I may as well make it productive.

Yesterday, planted carrots, kohlrabi, spaghetti squash, long neck pie pumpkins, yellow mellons, Swish Chard, 3 types of lettuce, Radishes everywhere as they come up first.
Sounds like a lot but I only plant in small areas and maybe 10-15 seeds of each.
Today is herb seeds and corn and pumpkins.

My back is giving problems so DH did the planting yesterday. We have out tomato, peppers (3 varieties), eggplant and cucumbers to go with the earlier things we planted. Our artichoke got froze back a couple of weeks ago so we planted two more and now the established plants are coming back up & looking good so we sharing lots of artichokes this year!

Hubby is putting onions in today. Garden still hasn't been tilled. After having about 9" of rain in April garden may be drying out enough to till. Hope to have everything in by the end of May.

It's one of the things that always seems odd to me when I'm hot over here you're cold over there and vice versa.

We are still eating Tomatoes from the garden believe it or not, we planted Heirlooms this year and they were great.

Oh My Poor Birds !!!!
But now you have a great greenhouse...
It's so strange that you are going into winter while we're going into summer...
So you posts when you are planting and gardening in our winter, Warms Me Up !!!!

I always forget to put my gloves.

It's the last month of Autumn here so there's not much being planted, that being said I was going to plant my Kohl Rabi seedlings but ended up getting caught with stuff inside. Hopefully I'll be able to get them in tomorrow. I think there'lll be a frost tonight so I've bought plastic drop cloths to protect the raised gardens while the seedling get themselves established.

I've still got to convert our empty aviary to a greenhouse. We lost our lorikeets in the 2009 bushfires here and the insurance company put up a new aviary for us and we never got any more birds. Seems to be so much to do lately I don't seem to be able to get it all done

Had a great day yesterday...
after a re-rototill of the garden...and put up make shift trellises made from found objects from my DH's barn...rebar, old ornamental fencing, a ladder, etc
Planted my pole beans, peas, more tomato plants, pickling cukes, candy onions and zucchini.
Today is corn, pumpkins, squashes, sunflowers, herbs, lettuce in a bowl planter and whatever I have room for.
Also, Jimmy will put the pump in the pond so I can water the gardens.
It felt so great to get that dirt under my nails again...(when I forgot to put my gloves on...)
All of the trees are blooming...Crab Apples, Apples, Cherry, Quince, and the Lilacs (my favorite)
