Hahaha I think I would have been happy with a few ears as well. Mine were about 3 inches long and they looked like a rednecks mouth (only a couple of teeth) apologies to any rednecks here emoticon

I really should post a couple of pictures of my gardens at the moment, for it being so cold and wet here they are looking pretty good. I think I'll get a great crop of cabbages and broad (fava) beans and the leeks are growing great guns.

My corn last year was pitiful. I don't think I've seen a more crappier set of plants.

Don't know whether to waste my time on it again this year, I suppose I can stick a few seeds somewhere and see what happens.

Hi I also have too many blueberries...
So I dried a bunch and canned blueberry pie filling...It took care of a ton of berries for me.
When drying, DO NOT do the boiling thing to split the skins...Just poke them with a skewer and then dry...Got this tip from someone on our team, can't remember who...Sorry !!!
Cukes, make relish, bread and butter pickles etc.
Summer squash, I grate my extras and freeze it for zucchini bread (can use any summer squash) put in soups at the end (takes the place of noodles).
And the best of all, take to your local food bank.
Hope this helps.

I'd like to have a problem with too many blueberrues. i do have a lot of cucumbers and summer squash. i also have purslane. i am mostly eating it raw. i tried purslane in green smoothies. did not work so great. it made it thicker then i thought.

Don't forget to be awesome.

I'll try that Patti if I get them in this year.

I love lamb but I usually do a shoulder roast and stuff it with a mixture of breadcrumbs, herbs, apple and onion. I is a very sweet tasting roast and my brother Steven's favorite.

Thanks for the link, will go over and have a look.

Had my cortisone shot in my left shoulder today so hopefully it'll be feeling better soon. Did some shopping and some other stuff so I'm tired tonight. Might just do a couple of posts and go to bed.

Hi All...

Jules, I heard that peppers need sulphur to thrive...
I put stick matches in the holes before I plant the plants. They seem to do well.

My neighbor Lee's mother came in from Australia this past weekend.
She made us leg of lamb for dinner yesterday....YUMMMM Even Jimmy loved it and he has always refused to eat lamb. He had 2 helpings...

So funny you should mention Sausage Pie...
Lee said him Mum will make it for us while she's here...
I just love trying new things.

As you all know, I subscribe to the Prairie Homestead's news letter.
You really should too...Here is todays link.
She is doing a series on Homestead Hacks...Someone who repurposes things to use in the garden or farm...
She is such a wealth of information.

I say what the heck, you were on holidays. Pies and snag rolls are true Aussie lunch snacks, a good pie is a pleasure to eat and I've been known to make snag rolls at home even though I have to stop myself eating too many of them as they are way better than the bought varieties.

Thanks for the link Patti, very interesting ways to preserve the peppers. I've never had success int he garden with them, I don't know why, maybe I'll try them again this year if I have the room. I've got a huge amount of stuff I want to grow.

Jules- I had 3 sausage rolls and three bites of pies. Hubby had one of each each time, less the bite I took out of his pie. I promise I didn't eat sausage rolls every day. I had fish and chips twice (which was probably worse, calorie-wise!) and Red Rooster and Sizzler... so it was even WORSE than eating sausage rolls every day!

I am thankful.

Mmmm home grown tomatoes, too early here for them but I have my heirloom seeds ready for planting.

I love roasted peppers, mind you I love eating peppers raw as well here's a link to a recipe I use sometimes for the peppers, it was one of my Mums favourite meals.

asp?recipe=384004

I have an electric stove so to grill them on the gas I have to fire up the BBQ, not always easy in Winter when everybody puts all sorts of things on top of the BBQ

I suppose if you can them you'd probably do it in a week brine and I'd say pressure can them. Wonder if you could water bath can them if you included some citric acid??

ATE OUR FIRST RIPE TOMATO YESTERDAY !!!!!
It was a Mr. Stripey (heirloom = Hillbilly) My Favorite !!!
It's a yellow tomato with red/blush streaks and is so sweet and not to acidy...
If you get a chance, try them....

Great Story Jenny...Made me Smile !

Jules, I roast mine on our grill. Place on a hot grill. I usually use the gas grill but have also done it with charcoal. The charcoal gives the peppers a richer flavor.
Grill til blackened and put in a paper bag to steam the skins loose.
After I skin and deseed them, I fry them up with olive oil, garlic and a small bit of oregano. Put in small containers and freeze them.
I don't know why but I have never thought of canning them...After all, they do come in a jar in the grocery store !

Jenny I have been following you on facebook. I don't doubt you putting on weight if you had a steady diet of pies and sausage rolls. They are maybe once a week foods and sometimes not even then.

Bottling (canning) is very popular in the country regions of Australia and many men do it as well as women.

When I do the capsicums (bell peppers) in the oven (and mine is electric too) I set the temerature to @180 C (375F) and put them on trays that has baking paper on them. When they start to blister and turn black, I take them out and rest them in a bowl with plastic wrap over the top to steam the skins off. They take on a lovely caramelized flavour done this way and they don't take up much space in the freezer, but I'm sure you could bottle them in small bottles and seal,

Peace and long life - Jules

Okay... just one little story, then I'm heading for bed, since it's almost 1am. I need to get my internal clock a bit better adjusted.

We stayed at a "hotel" in the outback for three days on the trip. It was truly a frontier kind of place with a shared bathroom down the hall and the whole downstairs was a bar. For those who remember Gunsmoke, it looked just like the Longbranch to me. I loved it, but I did feel like I had stepped into a time machine.

On the night before we left the little outback community of Isisford, I met a man named Frank Wright who had been a friend of my father-in-law. Frank was 88 and is a Aussie WWII vet. He was a lively old gentleman and we became fast friends in just a few minutes. We swapped stories for a while and then there was a lull in the conversation. Sort of like the wind had died down after a very animated hour of conversation and three shots of whiskey (on his part... I had coke zero). He told me that he had permission from his wife to come down to Clancy's every afternoon before tea (supper) to have three shots of whiskey. I asked him what he did when he wasn't in Clancy's chatting up the womenfolk. He said, "Well, you are probably too young to know anything about this, but I like to bottle things from my veggie patch and fruit trees." I almost fell off my stool and I was the one drinking the soft drink! Needless to say, the conversation got very animated again. My husband and I had to walk down to his house to get a couple of bottles from his pantry to carry with us on the rest of the trip. One was a relish with tomatoes and pineapple (which grows in Queensland), the other was a sweet and hot pepper jelly. I left with the recipe for the relish. The pepper jelly recipe wasn't written down, but it was much like what I already make. He also gave me a recipe for Pavlova... an Aussie dessert that I absolutely adore.

So... that's my bedtime story and happy memory for my dear Putting Foods By family. I really missed you all and am glad to be back in connection.

I made ZERO progress on cookbooks while I was gone. I thought I'd be writing while we were driving through the country, but I had too much fun looking at the beautiful countryside, reading signs, looking for koalas and watching out for kangaroos.

Back to work tomorrow... and back on my trackers (I've been a slack tracker on vacation and I'm totally cool with it!)

emoticon

I am thankful.

Oh my goodness, Nasreen! I am so sorry to hear it! Please take care of yourself so you can heal up quickly!

The trip was spectacular. Everything went exactly according to plan... how many times does THAT happen on a 10 day vacation!?!?! We were completely blessed throughout the trip.

I am so happy that my hubby got to reconnect with family and friends. Also, I picked up some recipes along the way. Of course I'll be sharing once I get myself straightened out and back on my pre-vacation-flurry routine.

-Jenny

I am thankful.

Hey everyone, I hope you missed me because I'm BAAAAACK!!! I missed you all while I was in Australia. It was a fantastic trip. After the meat pies, sausage rolls, and restaurant food, I need SP more than ever. Happy I dropped some pounds before I went, but I put back on a few while I was away.

Juleen- How do you roast the peppers? I have an electric stove, so I can't do them by just putting them on the gas burner the way Julia Child did.

I am thankful.

Oooo peach salsa sounds lovely. When we had our peach tree I made Peach Chutney, just like Mango chutney but with the peaches.

I have two big bags of Capsicums (bell peppers) that were super cheap at Aldi, will roast, skin and freeze them tomorrow. I use them in so many things and they are expensive if you buy them.

Peace and long life - Jules

So How is Everyone today???
A New Day and A New Week...Let's make it an Awesome One !!!!

My neighbor brought over 2 pecks of peaches last evening...
Well, that scheduled my day today.
Peach jam, peach pie filling, canned peach sections....
Wish my tomatoes would ripen. I would have loved to make peach salsa...

No plaster for a break seems really odd.

I've always thought (at least to myself) that soft tissue injuries hurt way more than a bone break. Once you've had the bone set there is usually little pain, but sprains, tears etc of muscles, tendons and whatever can hurt for months

Believe me if I could find one that would work I would take it. I'm pretty stoic but when that "from the bone" ache comes I'd really love something to take it away.

Patti I suppose it depends on where you come from, over here most American accents sound very broad so it's not unusual for ours to be the same to you over there.

Thanks, it's one of those things that you just have to put up with. I'd give anything for a pain killer that worked, but I've yet to find it, so I'll just have to keep up with the physio and grit my teeth
