Welcome to the team LemonLily! I agree about never having too many jars! I think my friends and coworkers are happy to know the jars they come across when cleaning their own or parents' storage areas are welcome at my house. I think we all like to know something will be used again. Frequently the jars come with stories of how mom or grandma always used them for some specialty. I love it.

Just received a shipment of seeds for the veggie garden. Trying to map out the garden plan for companion planting. Also collecting jars from friends and family. One can never have enough jars for canning!

Getting equipment (jars etc) and sorting throw the tools.
Looking at what might be able to obtain to cook up this year
as won't be ready in time to grow much myself;
Property is a disaster so this year will be cleaning out finalizing a plan
and doing lots and lots of hardscaping.
The only planting will be moving a few existing things and putting in some shrubbery/trees
and getting beds ready for next Fall & Spring

It is a misquote as in the Browning poem Lost Leader about the disappointment the group of poets felt when Wordsworth went off to be a tax inspector or somesuch it is "...Never glad confident morning again..." It's a great "hate" poem and her is a link;

Where is "ever glad confident morning" from? I like that!
You all make me wish I had a yard...until it's 90 degrees and I don't want to be outside.
Thanks, Gemini-Sky for the recipe reference.

the Tomato Sungold seedlings are now a couple of inches high; three of the six courgette seeds have germinated; the maincrop peas are six inches high and the snap peas about 3". I have various basil seedlings and some physalis and am waiting for the "real" leaves to come through before potting them on. Outdoors the broad beans are emerging, but the carrot hasn't germinated yet, though I got some carrot plugs along with some spinach plugs and these are doing OK. Pak choy is just coming up and if I squint and use all the optimism I can muster I think I can see the green haze of the chard seedlings. I have very short rows in raised beds and a small greenhouse and my idea is to grow lots of different things so I don't get those gluts though I did go mad over garlic forgetting that 18 garlics would produce 100s of bulbs. It was a pack of six different varieties so we'll see which ones work best. This is a marvellous time of year because it is 'ever glad confident morning' and the bugs, slugs and drought/dampening off and blight are yet to come!

Being that we're STILL in Tucson I'm getting antsy to get home and get started on our gardens...we picked out the dehydrator we're purchasing so that will arrive at home soon. I have mapped out the garden and have my grid set as to what we're planting where and I'll be picking up some seeds once we get home. Planning on buying from Burpee because their seeds are NOT GMO, as their plants are....can't wait...

I have planted the early spring seeds already & they are coming up. I am attempting to grow some plants from seeds indoors; I hope I have some that I can put into the garden! If not, then I will buy the plants. I am also trying to use up or give away some items that I canned last year. At the end of last summer, I got more free canning jars!!! thanks mom. :) I am pregnant this summer, so I told my husband he was going to have to help me with the heavy lifting if he wanted my pickles again this year. ;)

I am so excited for gardening season! I have a small garden now, but we are having fun learning, experimenting, and growing. Someday when we move into a larger home, I hope to have a much larger garden!

Pepper Mustard is so Yummy !!!!
You can use it on bergers or hot dogs, but I, also, like it on pork tenderloin and BBQ...
Pork Tenderloin = roll the loin in the pepper mustard and then in Panko bread crumbs. Bake at 350 for 20 mins. or til juice runs clear.
BBQ = Grill Brisket. At the last 20 min point, start basting the brisket with the mustard every 5 mins til done. The pepper mustard will carmelize...OK I'm Drooling Now !!!!
It's just Yellow Mustard, Sugar, Vinegar and ground up Peppers.
You can make it Sweet or as hot as you would like it. Just use the type of peppers you want.

I'll get out the recipe and post it in the Recipe Box Thread under the Team Goals Forum at the bottom of the team page.

OOPS !!!! It's already there....Look up Hungarian Pepper Spread/Mustard
on 11-6-2010...It's on page 2.

We don't garden because we have a very small yard. The only thing we grow is rhubarb. And I have to go out and cover that tonight because frost is predicted. However now that we are semi-retired my DH is doing a worker share at a CSA so for four hours of work a week he brings home a cooler bursting with organic veggies. We eat as much fresh as we are able, and freeze or can the rest. I can't wait! There is just a world of difference between local veggies, whether your gardens or our csa and farmers market, and what you can get in a grocery store.

We got onions, carrots, lettace & peas planted today. My artichokes & rhubarb are coming up. I am starting to leave room in the freezer for veggies from the garden.

What is everybody doing to get ready for the gardening and canning season? Planting seeds? Got plants ready? Planted anything yet? I am gearing up. I bought 45 dozen regular canning lids today. So I am ready. LOL. I only had 3 1/2 dozen regular and 7 dozen wide mouth left over from last year. The lids are selling out as fast as the store could get them in. I must not be the only one getting ready!

I am a serious canner. If it will fit in a jar, I will can it. emoticon emoticon emoticon
