I have been planting alot of good veggies in my garden. I have onions, tomatoes, spaghetti squash, watermelons, cantaloupe, (when I was a child they were called muskmelons) tomatoes, corn, carrots, chinese noodle beans, peppers both hot and sweet, replanted some potatoes yesterday that did not come up. Love working in the garden. I have it weed free.

Got some much needed rain last night. All my plants grew last night after the rain.

Less humidity today. Setting out pickle bush cucumbers started from seed in containers . they are going to the garden today. Does any one know anything about using geraniums to help control Japanese beetles?

I got back out to my patch at the community garden today, and managed to get in an hour of transplanting the plants that I had purchased. So, I managed to get in yellow squash, zucchini and two varieties of broccoli.

I was delighted to find my peas and cucumber seeds have already come up--that was FAST!

I still have more to plant, but it got too dark and I was out there by myself, so I had to give it up for the day. Oh well, maybe tomorrow.

It is amazing how long it takes to finish something you aren't working on.

DH tilled the veg. gardens yesterday - will get the tomatoes, cukes, and squash (summer & winter) planted today, before it rains.

The transplanted raspberry canes are doing very well - budding like crazy, and new shoots are appearing for next year -

The indoor jungle has moved outdoors for its summer vacation....and I can begin to pick some of the herbs and lettuce I planted a few weeks ago -

WooHoo!

Oh, and by the way, 2 weeks ago when DH went to the dump (transfer station, really), he found boxes of canning jars - a few of the old fashioned wire bail ones, but tons of the modern pints, half-pints, and quarts, all shapes and sizes - we sorted and stored them -

(we have a rule that we have to come home from the dump with less than we brought...broke it that day!)

Nothing yet. but I got out into the garden today to do some work. We finally had some time without rain so the whole family took an advantage. Hubby mowed the lawn, DS raked, DDs' helped weed out the raised beds, then hubby put soil into the beds. Me well all I got around to was putting rope up on the tressils (sp), for support for beans or tomatoes. I did 4 1/2, ran out of rope. This year I am using synthetic clothes line rope for this. It seems to be very strong and should last more than 2 years. The last stuff I used became brittle, I guess it wasn't meant for being used outside. My hands feel quite sore and I have a few rope burns from pulling it so tight.

Saturday, spent the day with my second son & his family in Great Falls, MT - we dug up some tulips and irises that needed to be divided and cleaned up a couple beds, trimmed lilacs and did lots of pruning of trees and dead shrubs. My body aches all over, but we made some serious inroads into a happier yard for them!

Gosh, I remember when I was a child, my grandmother used an acre of our lot to garden. She planted at least 500 tomato plants each year...Plum tomatoes...
We used to can as much as we wanted and then she would make tomato paste for the Italian retsaurants with the rest. Boy did our house smell Wonderful.
I still make my own tomato paste and then freeze it in small ziplock snack pags. Just enough for soups and stews, etc.

I will probably share with friends and freeze a lot after roasting with garlic, onions & herbs and can lots of salsa & sauce. Do you want some?

Didn't plant anything today as I am in Great Falls, MT., visiting my son and his family.

What will you do with all those tomatoes from 100 plants? Are you going to can them or freeze them. Sounds like a huge amount to me.

I did not plant today, but I did have fun in the garden. I planted pepino cucumbers in some hanging baskets and the plants are about 5 inches tall now, so I hung them on the edge of my patio. I also put some trellises over some bean vines in my garden.

Things are looking nice after the huge rainstorm.

I'm very fortunate to have a GreenHouse/Nursery that is owned by Italians. They had a whole display of Italian seed items...
I'm wondering if you we can sprout the dried seeds that you can get at an Italian Deli or food store????
I have some (I think)...I'll try to sprout them and see...
I cook mine in pasta sauce and put over Dreamfields pasta or in sauted bacon, onions and wine and put over brown rice....
OK What's for Lunch ???? LOL

Today I put in the edamame, broccoli & broccoli raab, armenian, persian and regular cukes, a couple of lettuces and two kinds of beets, celeriac, tomatillos, parsnips, a few tomato plants and hot peppers, summer savory, two kinds of mint, tarragon and scallions. Rain is in the forecast again, so want to get all the seeds in the ground before it gets too wet! Then, hopefully the sun will shine for several days in a row to prompt some germination!! Still have a lot of transplants to put in - it will be a busy week.

lily, lavender, cosmos, soy beans...

It was a good day.

I also got my dehydrator in the mail 2 days ago. Tonight I am drying apples. So far, I have dried beets, carrots, apples, bananas. I have some potatoes sliced and soaking in vinegar and salt and will dry them in a day or so.

I am enjoying the dehydrator so far. emoticon

I wanted to get some plants out into my community garden plot today, but thunderstorms were being forecast, so I stayed home instead. I didn't want to do nothing though, so I wound up going topsy-turvy crazy. I planted a topsy-turvy stand-thing with tomatoes and strawberries (3 of each), a hanging one for cayenne peppers, and another one for tomatoes that had already started to flower, so I wanted to get them planted somewhere soon! I have another one for strawberries, but I need more plants and soil to get that one done! Guess I'll have to wait until payday, lol.

It is amazing how long it takes to finish something you aren't working on.

Tractor Supply had bags of onion for 50 % off so we bought 2 bags. They were pretty dried up but wanted to be planted as they were sprouting. Should have been 120 onions but I am not sure how many we actually got.

We pulled a lot of onions that were ready to be pulled and put them in the shed to dry. Took the one that were drying in to put in hanging bags. We really have a nice crop of onions this year.

I set up my "salad station" on my back porch. It has tomato plants hanging down from the underside of a raised planter, and then I put tons of lettuce into the top. It is very colorful, and I can't wait to start harvesting!

As for my community garden space, I have managed to deliver 8 huge storage buckets full of compost from the local transfer station. It has been so rainy here that it is all soaked and weighed so much I had to drag all these things back and forth from my car. It probably took me about an hour to shovel it all into the buckets and heave it into the back of the car (I have something similar to a jeep), then another hour to drag them from my car to the garden space, which is not where I park my car, and dump all that stuff in my space.

If that's not enough cardio for a day, I don't know what else I could do, lol.

Tomorrow, I will probably take a lot of my plants down to the garden space and get them in the ground. FINALLY! I can reclaim my kitchen and back porch. That will be awesome!

It is amazing how long it takes to finish something you aren't working on.

I've been planting grass, too. (But not in the garden, lol) Our garden is in and we are starting to harvest. I haven't had good luck with my squash this year. . Dh says it been too windy. Out of 3 plants I have one left. Out of four romaine lettuce I have none. I cut the kale back because it was harboring bugs, I thought it would come back but it died. My watermelons have a little melon but the cucumbers don't have any that I can find. The spinach plants got eaten on a salad because they went to seed before we could get them planted. We bought new seed ... out of six ... we had three come up. Planted two packages of perriwinkles but only got 3 plants to come up in two planters, six plants total.

And if we can accept that a mother can kill even her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another? How do we persuade a woman not to have an abortion? As always, we must persuade her with love... And we remind ourselves that love means to be willing to give until it hurts...”

Container Gardening is the only thing available to me right now . . .

Yesterday I planted 4pkgs of Asiatic lily bulbs I got on the cheap from Aldis, they are mixed colors, repotted previous years' Easter lilies bulbs, and repotted 5 geraniums that were straggly looking from overwintering inside a few winters. Last summer I experimented with the geraniums, found if you cut off the live branch that has leaves on the end, and stick them as deep as possible in the pot, and keep them watered, yes they will grow and thrive. Who knew?!! So armed with that knowledge, this year I took them all the way out of their pots and cut out all the dead pieces, and stuck the pruned living centers with their root systems back in, along with the branches around the centers. Got all my plant stuff done yesterday as it is trash day today and I wanted to clean it all up in preparation for moving. I recycled pots and dirt from previous plants and threw away a ton of plant debris and plastic stuff. Feels good!

We started most of our plants in pots on the back porch. Our plan was to put them out after Easter but many were too big for the pots so we planted them in the garden. Five tomato plants that have about 7 tomatoes on them. Two look like they will be ripe enough to pick in a couple of days. Two squash and three water melons. We have two cucumber plants, six bell pepper plants waiting to be planted in the garden. We have spinach replanted waiting for them to come up. We had started some but they went to seed so I cut them for salads and we replanted.

Xana

Potted up some more agapanthus today and put them into the cold frame. Also went through the pots - iris, lily, begonia - all of which were under cover but did not make it through the winter, and chucked out those which had rotted.

My heart goes out to you over the deer. We have a load here - the other day there were twenty of them just outside my bedroom window! Result; I plant nothing by deer hating plants in the front of the house. I do have some roses but these all have cages around them. Not ideal but less soul-destroying.

Good Morning Everyone...
I didn't plant anything but my garlic is poking thru due to the past few nice, warm days...BUT this thursday, we are going to get snow again.
We just finished our maple sugaring and got 10 1/2 gallons of syrup. YUMMMMM....
Started cleaning out the flower beds from last years sedum and hosta stalks,
The deer sure did a number on all of my azaleas. I have around 50 palnts and I only have a few buds, let alone plants left....Some were eaten all the way to the ground.
Well. Happy First Day of Spring and Happy Gardening.

Potted up some white honesty seedlings and also some variegated ground elder - which needs to be in pots as it spreads and if you let it go to seed you end up with the dreaded ground elder. Also planted into big pots some agapanthus which I'd ordered and put those in cold frame. Glorious day so it was fun being in garden but we are about to have another frost tonight so protecton still needed.

After the rains and the 50-60 degree temps this week (and the 16 inches of water in the cellar), I may be able to get some peas in the ground this weekend -

Garden is a huge mud pit. Would love to get the peas out soon but don't think that is going to happen lol. I do have my small "salad" garden up at the house so as soon as I can things will start going in there.
