The cucumbers didn't make it. I've replanted that aerogarden with lettuce.

I think I've found the perfect tomato plant to grow, though. I bought Ruby Red seeds from a web site that specializes in varieties that are compact and great for growing in containers. These plants aren't supposed to get bigger than 10" to 12" inches. They're beautiful and some of the blooms are becoming baby tomatoes already. I don't even have the hood on the aerogarden on it's highest setting yet. The plants have stayed very compact. I haven't done any pruning yet. Much easier than the variety you get directly from Aerogrow.

DARLINGABIGAIL,

I'll keep you posted. I've run into my first snag. Cucumbers seem to be very fussy about pH. My plants were doing so well an then the leaves just started drying up and turning brown. From what I'm reading, it means the pH is too high. I'm trying to get it down into range. I'll have to see if I did it quickly enough to save the plants.

Up until now, I've been lucky, I guess. I've grown cherry tomatoes, lettuce and herbs in the aerogarden without having to bother knowing what pH the nutrient solution was.

Please let us know more about your aerogarden LORI2008, and how it does with your cukes. I have some interest in these machines, but wonder about the cost. I think if I bought one, it would be to have fresh herbs all year round. As far as other plants such as veggie plants... I'm just not sure since they are pretty pricey. A lot of great recipes and ideas here for cukes. Yummy!!!

I bought cucumber seeds that are supposed to be perfect for container gardening. The vines aren't supposed to get overly long and the flowers supposedly don't require polination in order to bear fruit. I'm trying them out in my aerogarden. All 15 seeds that I "planted" have sprouted within 3 days. The plants look beautiful. This weekend, I need to get to a home center and buy some lattice fencing. My aerogarden is on a shelf so I plan to cut the lattice to make a ramp from the shelf to the floor. With any luck, I hope to train the vines to stay on the lattice.

I wasn't expecting all 15 seeds to sprout so I'm not sure if I should cut down the extras or not. I have a six pod aerogarden. This is my first experiment with trying cucumbers so I guess I'll have to learn from experience! I'm really hoping it works though and that I have cucumbers to pick just after Labor Day.

WOW! Unfortunately, I have nothing to add. Just wanted to say how helpful everyone is with this post. I too, planted a couple of cucumber plants and have a feeling that I will have a lot to work with also.

Thank you so much for the great ideas everyone!

To add my 2 cents worth.
You can make pickle slices out of large cucs. I do dill, bread & butter & sweet pickles.
Also, sweet pickle relish & dill pickle relish.
Can be used in other canning recipes such as chow-chow.
They are very useful. Plain, in salads, pickled, google cucumbers & be amazed :)

Also look for Israeli Salad, sometimes called Meditteranean, excellent.

In all of these salads of course just leave out what you don't like, like if you don't like onions, leave them out.

If you de-seed by running your finger down the middle, it makes for much less cuke volume (so you can use more).

1. Tabouli - this is bulgur wheat salad with a ton of cukes, toms, and parsley added. There are 3 sparkrecipes for this, several different spellings, also can google. If you don't have bulgur on hand and have to buy some, look for the whole bulgur when you buy, as some bulgur is partially milled. Just like brown rice is healthier, whole is healthier. I love tabouli packed for lunch with a piece of leftover fish, chicken, or beef or turkey on top. I love cold leftover salmon or boneless chick breast on top.

2. Old fashioned cuke & cider vinegar salad.

3. Buttermilk cuke salad.

4. Cucumber dressing; I've eaten it occasionally but never made it, you could google a recipe and make it at home.

5. I saw a recipe the other day for cuke/lope salad, on the net, don't remember where, you could google. I wonder how that taste combo would be? Sounds weird but I'd like to try it one time, to see.

6. These 200 SparkRecipes have the word "cucumber" in the title (you could make one or two recipes as a side, per week):

I was curious to see if cucumbers could be dehydrated so I googled it. This is what I found:

Cucumber:

Cucumber is technically a fruit like tomatoes, but since most people think of it as a vegetable, I’ll include it here on the dehydrating vegetables page. I snack on dried cucumbers while I hike or as part of a salad while I’m cooking my supper. Because of the thick waxy coating, I peel cucumbers first and then cut into 1/8 inch slices. Arrange in a single layer and sprinkle with a little salt if desired. Dehydrate at 145° for two hours and reduce to 135° for another eight to ten hours.
