Everyone must be busy with summer;-) We are enjoying all our fresh vegies from the garden. We had one tree of peaches get ripe 3 weeks ago and the next one should be ripe in a couple of weeks, then apples & pears come next. Looks like we will have a bumper crop of pears this year.

If you could have sent me 1/2 of your rain & I could have sent you 1/2 of our hot, dry days: We would both be sitting pretty.
We have had 33 days with only trace amounts of rain :(
The garden is doing fair-nothing is getting any size on it, except the cucumbers.

Our garden has suffered so much from all the rain and cool weather! Our tomatoes look like twigs with a couple of leaves! They have flowers, and a couple of baby tomatoes started, but I don't think they are strong enough to hold them! Our peppers look a little better, our cucumbers are very small but have flowers already! The only thing that has done well so far are my sugar snap and snow peas!I just finished freezing the last of them yesterday!
Our flowers are good, but some of our young trees we planted are looking bad! For the month of June,we had 21 days out of 30 with nothing but rain! Please "let the sunshine, let the sunshine, the sunshine in" emoticon

I'm not going to do pickles this year & still have relish from last year. I just planted enough cucumbers for us to eat on.

I am putting up my last batch of pickles tomorrow.
Then, I will put up another batch of relish. After that, they will be for munching on & giving away :)

My garden is looking a little better now. I have gotten several cucumbers and more eggplant are setting on finally. We raise the Black Beauty. I also picked my first green pepper for an omelet the other day. Yum!

I picked [and ate] my first Ichibon Eggplant of the season today-YUM.. The Black Beautys are blooming.
I have small ears of corn, bell peppers & cayenne peppers.
Plenty of green tomatoes, but no eating those till we get our 1st ripe tomato!

It finally cooled off to a non-muggy 96 today. That & Lisa inspired me to do some weeding. I got the eggplants done. I will work on the peppers, okra & tomatoes in the next few days. The cucs, peas & corn don't need weeding:)

My garden is doing beautiful! I weeded and tilled the one garden, took 5 hours, cuz i'm so fussy. I'm burned from being in the sun too long in a tank top, but everygthing looks wonderful. Spinach and lettuce aren't quite ready, but the radishes are yummy.

We have had so much rain that our garden isn't doing very well. I have 2 tiny eggplant starting to grow and that is out of 8 plants. I do have 2 nice sized peppers I am watching and several tomatoes have set on but it will be a while before they are ripe. We gave up on growing sweet corn a few years ago. Even with an electric fence the racoons usually ended up ruining it before it was ready to pick.

I would have gladly shared some of the rain we have gotten the past several weeks. At one point we had 8" in 8 days. My poor garden is a mess. The pounding rain has washed gullies through it and we had a hail storm that did a lot of damage too. Now this week we have gone from wet & cool to hot & humid with no rain in sight.

I finally have a garden! I have 2 rows of corn, 1 1/2 rows of carrots, 1/2 row of beets, 2 rows of peas, 1/2 row of radishes and some beans all planted in-ground. Then I have some varieties of tomatoes, and peppers, lemon cucumber, zucchini, summer squash and canteloupe all planted in pots. Need to get some potatoes in the ground soon or it'll be too late! Oh, and when raspberries start to ripen, I will need a bigger freezer, I think!

Net- My brain must have quit, they are bread and butter. I would love a big farm like that too. I just feel so content when I am outside. At our house, we live in the city, we just have a small lot. So I just love to go out to the farm. We are going to be spending most weekends there, puttering in the garden.

My MIL does the same thing, she'll tell my DH she needs help and say his brother cannot do it as they have bad backs. Well, I get a little upset, because my hubby has degenerative disk disease and no cartilige in his right knee, but she has a big list.

Lisa,
Aren't MIL's a trip?
Today she informed DH that tomorrow he would HAVE to be at her house fixing her lawnmower. He ask her, what if he had things that needed to be done at home.
She informed him that----HER HOME & ITEMS were important, ours aren't. If I didn't laugh so hard-I might would get upset.

I only have 5 acres & it is enough. But, if I wanted to live the dream, I would have 100. House spot, garden, pool area, chickens, cows, hogs, etc...
I think maybe we should have lived in a past lifetime.
My grandparents had a truck farm when I was little.
I loved it, but wouldn't want to tend to that much garden.
I have never tried sweet & sour pickles. Are they anything like bread & butter pickles???

Oh, I think I would really like 10 acres. I would one day like to buy a hog and steer, fatten them up and send them to the slaughter house. We looked at property last night, 31 acres of farm land, they want 85,000 for it. I think it is high, as Michigan's economy is so bad. I would like to start a green house/ plant farm and a berry farm, especially raspberries, you pick. Ah, big dreams.

I don't blame you with MIL, sounds like mine. She says jump, you should say how high. I'm the only DIL, DH brothers never married. I now know why. But I don't run either. I have my own family and stuff to take care of.
We have quite some time before cukes come in, they are just tiny plants now. I'll send you my recipe for refrigerator sweet and sour pickles. They keep for a year, so yummy!!!!! emoticon

How many acres do you need?????

I have itty-bitty cucumbers as of today :)
And an upset MIL.? I wouldn't quit my yardwork to go running over there to get some cucumbers:(
I tried to tell her that I have a 100' row of cucumbers & I haven't bought any spices, vinegar or sugar to start canning yet. She went off on DH. He found it amusing that I didn't go running, everybody else in his family does?

Lisa,
You just reminded me of a childhood memory:)
We lived in Marshall, Michigan from 03/69-10/69.
Memory #1: My brother & I built tunnels in the snow drifts in late April.
Memory #2: It was too cold to go swimming on the 4th of July, but we got to go on the 10th-LOL

We saw our last frost, in Mississippi in late April.
You would love our growing seasons.
Spring garden is planted late April-early May.
Fall garden is planted late October-early November.
We always have something growing:)

Oh yea, my big boy tomatoes are blooming!!! As are the eggplant.

We got a frost last night, hope the berry blossoms made it through. My dad went and watered the tomatoes this morning, so hopefully we saved those. I'm just waiting to hear, to see if I have to go and buy more plants. Someone needs to tell the weather man it's June. At least we're not in Northern Michigan, they got a freeze.

If we were neighbors, not only could we can together,
but we could garden & get exercise together:)

I put the epsom salt around the tomatoes yesterday.
I will do the eggplant & okra soon. The roses, too.
DH cut them back too far this winter--they look weak.

I have little squash & blooms on the cucumbers :)
Blooms on the cherry tomatoes, too !!!

i'd never heard of using epsom salts either...thanks for that. too late to put it in the ground before planting, but I'll definitely add it to the watering water.
For lots of tomatoes and early harvest, i can't find anything better than EARLYGIRL and BUSH EARLYGIRL. The bush is a smaller plant with a bigger tomato, and both of them are ready to pick in two months. Since you're still working on your soil, try a couple of plants in containers and see how it goes. EARLYGIRL and BUSH EARLYGIRL put out a lot of tomatoes, so you'll have plenty for eating and for salsa and sauces. I love a warm tomato right off the vine :) Can't hardly wait for mine (which are flowering already even though they were planted only two weeks ago)

Brownsugar, Im in Michigan. I grow Roma tomatoes for salsa and spaghetti sauce, check out my page for my sauce recipe. I grow Better Boys or Big Boys for my tomato juice and stewed tomatoes. Epsom salt help the tomatoes grow. Put a tablespoon in the hole prior to planting. Then mix epsom salt with water and water your plants every two weeks. You can do this to all of your plants every two weeks for better growth.

Brownsugar, Your local County Extension, or Cooperative Extension office should be able to provide information/education on soil improvement, and what tomatoes grow best in your area. Hopefully, this link will work for you:

Good luck, and let us know what you learn!

Hello,

I am new here. I was told to go here for all the canning and growing questions that I asked my group. I want to start my garden but have not had a chance.

I don't have the greatest soil. There are alot of pepples and gravle. I have been trying to put compose and enrich it. I wonder how it will do this year. Last year was a disaster.

What kind of tomatoes are good for making canned salsa?

I am in Wisconsin. Is there a certain type of tomatoes that will grow quicker and easier for my location? I am hoping to plan some tomatoes for canned salsa, sauce, and just canned tomatoes.

Any hints are greatly appreciated. Amatuer gardener here.

I'm in zone 8, Pacific Northwest. I put in onion and leek starts back in March. A couple of weeks ago I put seeds down for mixed lettuces and greens, bunch onions and carrots. With the Memorial Day weekend, I will be busy, busy! I have 4 or five different Tomato plants to put in, and time permitting I'd also like to plant one or two different cucumber starts. BUT, I have to prep the garden beds first...

Hadn't ever thought about planting sweet potatoes in sand to get starts. My grandparents, parents, etc. just always started them in water. We will have to try the sand. Thanks for the info.

I typed in how to plant sweet potatoes for my mother-in-law a month and a half ago. The easiest websight to read and follow the instructions was on ehow.com. She got 3 sweet potatoes from the store and planted them in sand to get new shoots, wait 3 to 4 days to plant the slips. I saw them the other day and they look like they were doing pretty good in the garden.

Thanks again Lisa,
Discussed it with DH. We are going to try some in a raised bed. We will have to get some sandy soil,as our soil is mostly clay.
Fresh carrots-yummy !!!

I haven't been able to freeze any asparagus yet. Between eating it and giving some away, I don't believe I will get to put any away for the winter. emoticon

You probably want to allow 3 months or so for your plants to grow from your sweet potato. There are also varieties of sweet potatoes that are just grown as ornamental for foliage only. Good luck

Well...I went to the nursery today and found out we can't grow sweet potatoes here and no plants are available, Pacific NW-zone 6. I'm not taking no for an answer, so next year I will start my own plants on the window sill. I did manage to plant my tomatoes, peppers, egg plant and zucchini today. Thanks for the tips.

You don't plant sweet potatoes like regular potatoes. You can start plants by putting a sweet potatoe in water but it is too late in the year to do that. Your best bet would be go to a nursery & buy plants. They like warm weather so are planted after it warms up. Any nursery should have someone there who will be happy to talk to you about the different varities, etc. They also do well in sandy well drained soil & we plant them in a raised ridge. Good luck, hope this helps.

OK, stupid question....I noticed someone planting sweet potatoes!! I love them and had not thought to plant them. How do you plant them, do they have an eye like regular potatoes? As you can tell I'm not an expert gardner.... emoticon

I got my cayenne peppers, bell peppers & 1/2 of the eggplant planted today. The ground is too wet. I got bogged down so bad that I had to come out of my boots just to get out of the garden.
I will finish the eggplant & tomatoes tomorrow-I hope.

The peas, corn, cucumbers, potatoes, squash,& okra are coming up. The rain is helping my herbs.
