I think Halo forever in my mind is what got me into shooter. I think having the to think of how to take someone down because sheild play is involved makes it more survivable than Modern Warfare 3 which for me I die so much more easily than I do Halo. It all depends on how you want to play. If you play as a Loner than MW3 would be the game for you but if you want to play as a team then Halo is the better choice.
