Take-Two Fires A Shot At GameStop

Take-Two has launched the latest salvo in the war between game publishers and GameStop. I guess the publisher wasn't happy with the retailer's two-billion dollar year -- haters (kidding). In a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz, company CEO Ben Feder said:
"GameStop continues to aggressively push their used game business, which is having a meaningful negative impact on sales of new games. Management is frustrated with this trend and is examining ways to ameliorate the problem, which includes strategies around online play and downloadable content which extend the lifespan of AAA titles."
As I mentioned last week, used-game sales have become such a hot-button issue that some publishers were talking about combating the GameStops of the world on a design level. While it might make sense to publishers, I believe that this way of thinking has the potential to taint games. Downloadable content (DLC) can be very cool, but I'd hate to see publishers hold back on things that could ship with a game, but are withheld for used-game sales considerations. I could easily see publishers ruining some excellent work by forcing developers to go heavy with online play and DLC.
Am I being paranoid? Do you think there is cause for concern? Can publishers put a wrench in the GameStop machine? Or is the retailer too powerful at the moment?
