Hey Tema,

There is so much that is coming on Aug 11. I'm actually looking most forward to the Avator marketplace. Some new outfits can be unlocked by playing games; I'm really curious about the Splosion Man ones.

Games on Demand will be sweet...downloading whole games. HD space will also be improved for those games that you burn to the HD (you'll have to delete them and reburn, but it will take up a lot less space now).

Other things include the ability to browse and update your Netflix (at least the top 50 in each genre), watch Netflix with friends, and a few dashboard updates (like sortable friends list and launching games from the achievements page).

This may already be out, but you'll also be able to stream movies from your computer in updated, web friendly, formats.

Facebook and Twitter connections will be coming in the very near future too!

Lots of good things!

Hey Ginitonic, you are right. There are some hard core games for the Wii. My favorite is No More Heroes. Definitely not a kids game. They aren't advertised as much, but there are definitely some nice ones on there.

Producers Assemble For 'Voltron' Feature Film 30 Comments Posted Yesterday 11:21 AM - By Joseph Baxter

It is being reported that a (presumed) live-action adaptation of the venerable "giant robots" franchise, Voltron is in the works. A group of producers from Atlas Entertainment, Charles Roven, Richard Suckle and Steve Alexander (who collectively have been behind Get Smart!, The International, and The Dark Knight) have acquired the rights to the franchise from World Events Productions. (Who was previously involved in a legal battle over those rights.) However, Ted Koplar will come over from World Events to join the trio of producers, along with Wanted producer, Jason Netter of Kickstart Entertainment.

The show, which debuted in the US in 1984, was a re-dubbed and re-edited version of the first season of Japanese anime, Beast King GoLion. Drastically altered and released in the States as Voltron: Defender of the Universe, it was the first bit of Japanese pop-culture (since, perhaps, Godzilla and Speed Racer) to make an impact in America with not only the animated show (which was more advanced than any US animation, while already three-years-old at the time), but the iconic, gigantic Voltron robot set. Made of durable die-cast metal, it allowed kids to assemble the lion robots into the spectacular, sword-wielding, Voltron. (Man, I miss my set.)

After two films, and about a billion and a half dollars, it's no secret that a little franchise, which also happens to come from the 80's called Transformers seems to be doing somewhat well in the box-office. Can that success be duplicated? At least in the United States, Voltron resides nowhere near level of popularity of Optimus Prime and the gang. However, Voltron has always been just outside the radar of the mainstream. After a somewhat failed comeback attempt in 1998 with the reboot/sequel series Voltron: The Third Dimension (which contained CGI animation that looks rather crude by today's standards), one might think that Voltron is damaged goods. However, the timing may just be right.

While an entire generation of 90's babies may look at Voltron and say "omg that's like a ripoff of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" (another Japanese staple that was re-edited and re-contextualized for the States), those of us in the know will realize that Voltron was the original. Even without Megan Fox's bod stealing the show, it actually has the potential (and I'll stress "potential") to capture the imagination of not only those of us on the retro kick, but those who may not be familiar with the inter-galactic struggle against King Zarkon and his evil legion of Robeasts. However, it's a tight rope on which to walk. It has to overcome the trap of looking too generic, and must distinguish itself not only visually, but substantively. Will we get characters that will genuinely pique our interest? Will they go overboard on the Voltron robot, indulging themselves in radically remodeling it into an unrecognizable form? Most importantly, will it star Ryan Reynolds? We shall see.

The Weekend Hot Sheet -- Wii Shoppers and Unlikely Rock Band/Guitar Hero Innovations
Posted by Andrew Pfister - Saturday, June 27, 2009 12:00 PM
What's the Hot Sheet? It's our new recurring feature wherein your lovely G4tv.com editorial team attempts to be funny and presents interesting (hopefully?) data to you, our lovely readers.

On the weekends we'll feature various snapshots of what games, game products, and pre-orders people are buying on Amazon.com. Why Amazon? Because it's very easy to find and collect! And because you didn't pipe up in the meeting when we talked about this. I don't care if your Outlook reminder didn't pop up, it's your responsibility to be there.

Ahem. Anyways, on with the Sheet. The sales appetizer:

Amazon.com's Top 10 Wii Bestsellers, As of 4:40PM, 6/26/09

Fitness routines, golf, tennis, go-karts, music camp...Wii owners are definitely on summer vacation. EA’s first two MotionPlus games are setting the table for Wii Sports Resort later in July. Here's hoping Punch-Out and Ghostbusters stick around for a while longer!

1. Wii Fit
2. EA Sports Active
3. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10
4. Mario Kart Wii
5. Wii Music
6. Wii Play
7. EA Sports Grand Slam Tennis
8. The Conduit
9. Punch-Out!!
10. Ghostbusters: The Video Game

Ready for the main course?

The 10 Remaining Rock Band/Guitar Hero Innovations

Now that we’ve tapped the greatest band in the world (Van Halen, duh), got our DLC systems up and running, hit most of the major instruments and guitar body types, what’s left to do with Guitar Hero and Rock Band?

1) Plastic Girlfriend On Plastic Boyfriend's Shoulders
It's a $300 peripheral and you won't be able to see anything, but activating star power will make her flash your television. Will also fall off when hit by a beer bottle.

2) Pot Smell Generator
To be used in conjunction with third-party smoke machines and Pink Floyd DLC. Not responsible for police searches based on reasonable cause.

3) Guitar Hero: Opening Band
Featuring an amazing setlist of songs that conveniently fade out after 30 seconds so you can go to the bathroom and get a new beer.

4) $5 Bottle of Water
A pre-order "bonus" included with Rock Band: Festival, a live-track only edition with a Boktai-style sun sensor that only activates the game when the temperature is above 90 degrees.

5) 50-Minute Wait Between Changing Setlists
To not only build dramatic tension for the next act, but an opportunity to beat your high score on the new roadie guitar-tuning & microphone check mini-game.

6) Virtual Performer Meltdowns
In most cases, yelling enough taunts or obnoxious requests into the microphone will cause the game to stop, and the characters will walk off the stage for 5 minutes. During Cat Power songs, this will occur randomly and she won't come back.

7) Mosh Pit Simulator
We'll have to wait for Project Natal to come out, but the potential here is exciting.

8) iPhone App That Calls Best Friend During "Your" Song
Apps like Shazam can easily identify songs, so why not take it to the next step and have it auto-dial Jenny when you play "Dirty Little Secret" because omg that was such an awesome summer!

9) Ticketmaster Convenience Charges
You know, I'm not even going to joke about this, because I can actually see them trying to get a piece of the action.

10) Guy Next To You Singing Off-Key Recognition
It happens in your living room just as much as it does at live shows -- uses Beatles: Rock Band tech to recognize any amateur back-up singers and boosts the volume so that it's all you can hear.

(Oh, one last thing: it's okay if you don't laugh. In fact, you don't even have to tell us about it in the comments section. You can just continue on with your life as if it had no effect!)

I have a Wii too. I have the PS3 mainly for Blue Rays but I will play Uncharted and Metal Gears Solid. Did not like Little Big planet that much. Looked to kiddie for me and for me do the work for them and design levels so that others can play. I think if I was going to do that I should get paid for it.LOL. Xbox in my mind is the best game system with a great online communityand the Wii is physically fun and easy to play with my son.

Lobo, you know know I'm one of those people who have a Wii, but I also have a PS2, PS1, gameboy (the old version, not the new one) and have had game consoles basically since they were invented! I don't have the money for an X-box or PS3, on a fixed income and it took me months to save for the Wii. BTW, there are some pretty hard core games for the Wii, it's not all roses and daises. Please don't think less of me because I'm a person who has a Wii.
I've been a gamer for over 30 years.

Make it a good day,

Shia LaBeouf Hates The Wii
Posted by Stephen Johnson - Monday, June 22, 2009 2:25 PM
How do you feel about actor Shia LaBeouf? Personally, I like the guy. He was in Holes, and that's an underrated and awesome movie with a great title, and I liked him better than robots in Transformers (although, that's not saying too much.) A lot of people don't like LaBeouf, though: His name is annoying. He has a Momanger. He (reportedly) got into a drunken car accident. He has more money, power, friends and ladies than you will ever have. But did you know LaBeouf is a gamer?

Judging from his interview with The Big Download, LaBeouf is a for-real gamer, too. Not one of those Hollywood actors who say things like, "I used to love Super Mario Brothers, and I love the Wii." In fact, LaBeouf doesn't like the Wii. At all.

"I don't mess with the Wii, to be honest with you," LaBeouf said. "It's kind of an amateur console. I'm not into the Wii thing..This is how in a simple way you can find out if it's a gamer you want to play with. Ask them if they have a Wii. If they say yes, get the f*** out of there."

LaBeouf also speaks very knowledgeably about Godfather II, names Sid Meier's Civilization as his favorite game, and says he worked with Warner Brothers to fine tune upcoming movie tie-in game Transformers II.

So what do you think of LaBeouf now? Personally, this interview makes me like Shia less. The guy has all the money in the world, does really cool stuff for a living, and no doubt has his choice of incredibly hot Hollywood actresses to hook up with, and he also has to be all up in gaming? This isn't a club for Hollywood kids, LaBeouf! This is a nerd fraternity, man. Go have lunch at the Ivy, spend some time counting your money, and leave us to our solitary misery, LaBeouf... unless you want to take a look at my screenplay, of course.

Logitech Harmony PS3 Remote Adapter Released

Friday May 15, 2009

Well, as stated back in March, Logitech has been developing an adapter for their premium Harmony universal remotes that would allow them to work with the PlayStation 3.
Well, it's finally here. The good news is it works. The better news is that it doesn't require a USB port. The mediocre news is that it costs $60.

But, if you have a Harmony remote, this seems like a very small price to pay to be able to control an incredible piece of media hardware (PS3!) with your slick Harmony remote.

Hurray! The days of multiple remotes for PS3 owners are finally over.

'The Dark Knight' Producer Moves Into Games Making
Posted by Patrick Klepek - Tuesday, May 19, 2009 11:23 AM

Legendary Pictures, the same studio who helped produced The Dark Knight and 300 and currently overseeing the adaptation of Gears of War and World of Warcraft is seriously moving into the video game production business. The long-rumored appointment of former Activision and Electronic Arts executive Kathy Vrabeck as the head of Legenday's new digital division is now official, reports the LA Times.

The company hasn't revealed many plans for games yet, outside of previously announcing The Lost Patrol, a 2010-targeted cross-platform venture where Legendary intends to simultaneously produce a movie, video game and other media.

With the dissolution of Brash Entertainment, a publisher who promised to revolutionize the relationship between Hollywood and video games, Legendary is primed to achieve what Brash always pledged.

Will they suffer the same fate as Brash?

Video Game Sales an
Economic Indicator?
Updated: Sunday, 17 May 2009, 4:31 PM CDT
Published : Sunday, 17 May 2009, 4:29 PM CDT

By ANTHONY BARTKEWICZ
(MYFOX NATIONAL) - Sales of video games and game consoles are a good indicator of how the economy is doing, according to 24/7 Wall Street's Dan McIntyre . And recent industry sales figures show that the economy isn't doing so well.

CNet reports that in April, the game industry's sales slipped to $1.03 billion, compared to $1.24 for April 2008. April 2009 sales were also down 30 percent from March's $1.43 billion. Video games were previously believed to be " recession proof " by some.

Video games are "inexpensive enough so that they should be a reasonable proxy for consumer discretionary spending," McIntryre wrote. Figuring $300 for the cost of a console and $50 for the cost of a game, he said the slide in sales is a sign that "the money for discretionary spending has dried up." He added that the decrease in console sales "is so extreme that it is a clear sign that sales of consumer electronics are in a flat spin."

Sony Reports Billion Dollar Loss
Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, May 14, 2009 8:43 AM
This is a bad day for Sony. The company announced today that it had suffered its first annual monetary loss in 14 years. The home of the PlayStation lost over a billion dollars last year. Worse, maybe, than that, Sony expects to lose even more next year. The company is bracing for a loss of $1.26 billion, in the business year ending in March 2010. To put this in perspective, though, a billion loss isn't that much, compared to the losses at companies like GM, Chrysler, AIG or Bank of America.

A bright spot in the forecast: Sales of the PlayStation 3 and the PSP picked up in the 2009 financial year. To address the losses, Sony intends to close three more factories in Japan.

While the immediate causes for the loss have more to do with a tanking world economy than any specific decisions Sony has made, the downward spiral may be indicative of deeper, systemic problems at the company. Over the last 20 years, Sony has cornered, then lost the market in some of the most important sectors in technology.

Home music players: It was a long time ago, so it's easy to forget, but Sony practically invented personal music players with the Walkman -- now they are a tiny part of a market owned by Apple.
Video Game Systems: Obviously, the PlayStation 2 was the winner in the last generation of the video game consoles, but this time around, Nintendo is cleaning Sony's clock (along with everyone else's, of course.) Nintendo dominates Sony both in terms of home consoles and handheld.
Televisions: Sony trails Samsung, and Sony's TV division has been losing money for years.
Camcorders: While Sony is still a major power-house when it comes to camcorders, cheaper, web-ready cameras like the Flip are eating into its market share.
Let me spell out the pattern here: Sony tends to focus on high-end electronics for connoisseurs, but most people in the world don't seem to care about things like that. Case-in-point: The PlayStation 3 versus the Wii. Sure, the PS3 is a much more powerful system than the Wii, with technical specs that blow Nintendo's console out of the water, but people are more willing to buy the Wii because it's seen as fun, accessible and not intimidating. To paraphrase The New York Times, Sony seems to be basing their strategy on the Japanese model, where people don't mind paying top dollar for top electronics, but in the rest of the world, most people would rather have a simple, inexpensive product that is reliable, than anything "cutting edge."

Hopefully, a brighter day is just around the corner for Sony, and the company has a "killer-app," a must-have product akin to the Walkman or the PlayStation One, up its sleeve.

Naughty Dog Founders Establish New Casual Gaming Company
Posted by Jake Gaskill - Tuesday, May 12, 2009 5:10 PM

Good news Naughty Dog fans. No, that Jason Rubin/Iron Maiden lawsuit hasn’t been thrown out. Rubin and fellow Naughty Dog founder Andrew Gavin have teamed up, with the help of Flextor co-founder Jason Kay, for their triumphant return to gaming in the form of a new casual-centric company, Monkey Gods.

According to its website, the company is focusing on, “development and distribution of games for social networks, the iPhone, and game consoles including Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Nintendo Wii.” The first titles being released are a multiplayer word game called Monkwerks and a “re-invention” of the PC puzzler Snood for the iPhone.

The site is incomplete and a bit buggy at the moment, and significant details are few at this point. But if you're a fan of these guys' work, and you've been waiting tirelessly for them to get back into gaming, today is a great day for you.

Anyone like that around here?

Dying Gamer Writes Accused Murderer's Name In Blood
Posted by Stephen Johnson - Wednesday, May 06, 2009 2:50 PM
In a macabre scene straight out of, well, a horror video game, Matthew Pyke, an avid player of Advance Wars, was murdered, but managed to scrawl part of his alleged killer's name on his computer before dying of multiple stab wounds. The accused killer, David Heiss, from Limburg, Germany, met the victim through the Advance Wars internet forum.

The gaming angle and Web aspect of this story may be new, but the apparent motive for the crime should be familiar to anyone who's ever read a pulp detective novel: It was all over a dame. The dame in question, Joanna Witton, of Nottingham, was dating Pyke, and Heiss knew both of them online. Heiss apparently became obsessed with Witton, then made several trips from Germany to see the couple.

"I started blanking him as if to say leave me alone. I was afraid he was going to turn up again and I didn't know what he was capable of," Witton told the court. in England. "I was willing to smash my laptop up if it meant that I would never speak to him (Heiss) again. I was ready to run away."

Heiss says he flew to England to confront Pyke and Witton over disparaging remarks the couple allegedly made over the Advance Wars forum, but not to kill anyone.

"I thought that once he (Pyke) stepped outside I would give him a beating. It wasn't my intention to put him in hospital, it wasn't my intention to break any bones," Heiss told the court. "At some point we started to punch each other. He was on his back and I was sitting on him. The next thing I felt was something inside my knee. I didn't really feel any pain and I looked down and saw it was the knife. I was terrified. I was trying not to let him attack me. I grabbed his arm and shook it and smashed it against the wall. I was so afraid that he would stab me again but then I stabbed at him."

After arresting Heiss, police also found a fake suicide note, written from Pyke's point of view, among Heiss' possessions. Heiss says he wrote the note to "cheer himself up."

Rumor: Microsoft Working On Motion-Controls Too?
Posted by Stephen Johnson - Friday, May 01, 2009 3:08 PM

We at TheFeed are sometimes accused of being biased in favor of one console over another. It isn't true (except for my on-the-record views on how badly Intellivision sucks compared to Atari), and to prove it, I'm going to repeat a story I wrote earlier today about the PlayStation 3, except this time, it's going to be about the Xbox 360. Here goes:

There is a rumor on the internet, credited to an unnamed source, that Microsoft is planning to introduce motion-sensing controls to the Xbox 360. Unlike the rumored PS3 motion controls, the 360's won't involve LED lights or another controller. Supposedly, Microsoft is working on a sensor bar with a webcam that will read your motions, down to the smallest gesture, and translate those into video game fun.

Here's what the service will supposedly offer, according to Engadget's source:

Full body and hand gesture control of games / characters.
In fighting games you kick, punch, duck, dive, jump and so forth with your body.
It also picks up small hand gestures like pinching, grabbing and scrolling.
There will also be video conferencing and games with video.
Trivia game over the internet with live images of each person playing. When a question pops up, they can clap to buzz in.
You can "move objects on your screen" and the other party can see what you're doing in real time.
Sensor detects only the person playing, not folks observing on the couch.
Hmmm. Interesting, but I'm suspicious. First off, look at the above picture (swiped from engadget). While it isn't obviously doctored, it does look like a set-up in someone's living room as opposed to in a Redmond, Washington office somewhere. To me, that clearly looks like a coffee table in the foreground and not a conference table, and, just eyeballing it, it looks a little like the lighting might be off on the sensor bar itself, like it's brighter than it would be. Secondly, we've heard that Xbox was making motion-sensitive controllers before, as far back as 2007! We've hear it more than once, from respected sources, but none of these products has hit the market and Microsoft has always denied it.

But on the plausible side of the ledger, it's not like leaks on the internet are unheard of, and maybe Microsoft's testing rooms do have oriental carpets. It is getting close to E3 and Microsoft has promised to "completely transform how people think about home entertainment," so maybe it has something big up its sleeve. Something like a control system that doesn't have a controller.

If this is coming out, I feel the same way about this as I do the rumor of a PlayStation 3 motion-sensor: It's an interesting novelty, but I doubt either system plans to base their whole future on motion-sensing. Judging from the Wii, it's really only fun for a little bit to play with "unique" controls. After an hour or so of any Wii game, most people want to go back to "traditional" control schemes. And If I have to really kick, punch and jump around while playing games, I'm out. If I wanted to do that, I'd excercise!

We've put the word out to Microsoft and hope to hear back soon, but don't expect much. In the past, the company generally says something like, "We don't comment on rumors and speculation,"

Has Konami Canceled 'Six Days In Fallujah'?
Posted by Stephen Johnson - Monday, April 27, 2009 8:21 AM

Korean site Asahi is reporting that Konami has canceled development of docu-game Six Days In Fallujah.

"After seeing the reaction to the videogame in the United States and hearing opinions sent through phone calls and e-mail, we decided several days ago not to sell it," a public relations official of Konami reportedly told Asahi. "We had intended to convey the reality of the battles to players so that they could feel what it was like to be there."

The game, which aims to offer a you-are-there perspective on the Gulf War II's bloody Battle of Fallujah, garnered controversy and condemnation from some peace activists and veteran's groups upon its announcement earlier this month. Although the Iraq War veterans we spoke with seemed okay with the title coming out. Check out our early look at the game here.

I've contacted Konami, and hopefully I'll be hearing back one way or the other whether the game has been canceled or not.

ony's Peter Dille Acknowledges The Company's Poor Marketing
Posted by Raymond Padilla - Tuesday, April 21, 2009 5:22 PM

In an extensive interview with Gamasutra, Sony senior vice president of marketing Peter Dille acknowledged the company's unsuccessful marketing campaigns for the PlayStation 3. Dille said:

"I'll be candid with you. One of the things that we're spending a lot of time on is our marketing approach. The PlayStation 3 is a complicated machine that does a lot of things. What we find again and again when we do focus groups is folks don't understand everything it can do, and that's on us."
Like many of you, I've been frustrated by Sony's marketing -- particularly its television commercials. The spots look cool, but most of them don't say anything. More than one Sony employee has told me that they think the commercials are stylish, but have no point. One went as far as to say, "I don't know what the hell I'm looking at." Numerous readers of TheFeed have said similar things. At least Sony is cognizant of the issue, but will it lead to substantive change?

For you Sony fans -- and even you Sony haters -- out there: what would you do to change Sony's marketing? What facets of the PlayStation 3 would you emphasize? What would your central message be?

Wow, I enjoyed reading that article. Not because I hate Nintendo (That's untrue) but because I think the wii is overall just a Fade. I mean, if you look at the hardware, it has no staying power with more beefed up systems. What's it cost to make a Wii? like 50 bucks now? Yet it still sales for it's debute price. Great Marketing for nintendo, and only nintendo. I can't help but feel bad for all the other 3rd party producers who actually made a quality game just to be lost in shovelware.

That being said, are there any really good games out there for the Wii from 3rd Partys? Zac & Wiki was alot of fun, and felt like effort was put into it. How was boom blox? Please let me have some suggestions!

Microsoft Announces Xbox 360 Elite "Game Of The Year Bundle" With 'Halo 3' And 'Fable II'
Posted by Raymond Padilla - Monday, April 20, 2009 6:00 AM

Microsoft has announced a new "Game of the Year" edition for its Xbox 360 Elite console. In addition to its top-of-the-line model, the bundle includes Halo 3 and Fable II (X-Play's Game of the Year for 2008). In today's press release, Microsoft stated:

"Beginning in May, fans can enjoy the premium experience of Xbox 360 Elite with two highly-acclaimed Xbox 360 exclusive games, including 'Halo 3,' the thrilling conclusion of Master Chief’s epic fight against the Covenant and 'Fable II,' the masterful role-playing sequel with limitless choices and consequences. The Xbox 360 Game Of The Year Bundle will be available for a limited time and will come at no additional cost, estimated retail price at $399 (U.S.).

In addition to providing two of Xbox 360’s biggest blockbuster titles, the Xbox 360 Game Of The Year Bundle provides an incredible value with 120 GB of storage, a wireless controller, a wireless headset, anHDMI cable and a free Netflix trial."
If you happen to need a new Xbox 360 and haven't played these two excellent games then the Game of the Year Bundle is a fantastic way to go. That said, I'd bet that most Xbox 360 gamers that were interested in either title have already given them a shot, so this deal is most likely intended for new customers. The package is a great way for Microsoft to leverage a hugely popular brand like Halo to sell its most expensive model.

Last month I wrote about a rumor that Microsoft will be halting the production of the Xbox 360 Elite. The rumor suggested that the company would be done with the model this quarter. A package like the Game of the Year Bundle works towards expunging existing inventory. Curious, hey?

If you don't own an Xbox 360 or need a replacement system, would you buy this Game of the Year Bundle? How do you feel about the games included? Be sure to check out additional photos of the bundle after the cut.

In the three years since it first launched, the Nintendo Wii has sailed past competing systems from Sony and Microsoft to consistently claim the top spot in the console war.

But if a recent rash of troubling stories about the Wii is a vision of things to come, the tide might be turning for the seemingly unbeatable machine.

Wii On Top For Now, But For How Long?
Kinks in the system's shiny white armor starting showing last month. Despite steady success in Japan, the Wii fell into second place in March as the underdog Playstation 3 clambered atop the region's sales charts for the first time in 16 months. That was enough to garner some uncharacteristically somber comments from Nintendo President Satoru Iwata, who deemed the climate in Japan "unhealthy" for the Wii.

But to Cowan & Company analyst Doug Creutz, the U.S. market isn’t necessarily any healthier, at least if you're thinking of investing in a console game. In an interview with Gamasutra, Creutz called the Wii "fool's gold" for third-party game developers.

"The choice here is really between investing for the Xbox 360 and PS3 -- since their capabilities are fairly similar -- or the Wii," he said. "I would caution investors and developers that the larger installed base of the Wii is really a bit of a red herring."

Crueutz goes on to point out that while the 19 million Wiis in North America trounce competing consoles individually, combined sales of the 360 and PS3 actually top 22 million. That represents a larger chunk of the pie for game developers who can more easily port games back and forth from the two systems. Additionally, Creutz notes that Nintendo's first-party games and the Guitar Hero and Rock Band franchises account for nearly one-half of all Wii software sales, a far larger percentage than what's found on the other consoles. Comparatively, the Wii is simply a tougher nut to crack for third-party developers.

Peter Moore, president of enormous third-party game maker EA Sports, echoed Creutz's concerns while speaking at a recent conference.

"You simply can't take what you're doing on the PS3 and Xbox and port - that's a dirty word - down to the Wii," he said, insisting that instead you have to build Wii games "from the ground up."

He's not the only one at EA with issues. Earlier in the month, an EA producer confessed to having trouble incorporating Nintendo's upcoming Wii MotionPlus control attachment into its Grand Slam Tennis game, raising questions about when the tech would be ready for consumers. Nintendo answered that by officially announcing a release date only to curiously push back the release of the game they've repeatedly used to show off the new technology, surefire smash sequel Wii Sports: Resort.

Of course, it's not all doom and gloom. NPD Group reports that the Wii again led the way in March 2009, outselling both the 360 and PS3 by a wide margin. Nintendo is also enjoying strong numbers for its newly released DSi handheld, with the company reporting first-week sales of over 600,000 units in the U.S. and Europe. Mario's checking account won't run out of funds any time soon.

The question is, will gamers run out of interest? The last two major first-party Wii games, Wii Music and Animal Crossing: City Folk, failed to generate the kind of excitement (and, in turn, sales) that Nintendo is accustomed to, a fact that analyst Ed Barton of Screen Digest believes is a big reason why the Wii is struggling. While older blockbusters like Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii are still selling well, Barton points out that the company needs new experiences to drive new sales.

Nintendo hopes to deliver exactly that with upcoming high-profile games like the aforementioned Wii Sports sequel and a remake of classic boxing game Punch Out!, but that still leaves plenty of wiggle room for the Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360 to continue closing the gap. And if Japan is any indication (and it usually is), that gap can disappear in a heartbeat.

So what do you think? Is the Wii destined for a downfall, or is this just a mid-life crisis?

GameStop CEO Wants PS3 And Wii Price Cuts
Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, April 16, 2009 7:43 AM

Dan DeMatteo, the CEO of game retailer GameStop, has joined the growing chorus of video game industry insiders and professionals calling for a price cut for the PlayStation 3. He thinks a price-cut for the Wii would help too.

In a recent interview with CNBC, DeMatteo said the PlayStation 3's is suffering for its $399 sticker price. "That price point is clearly an issue in this economy," DeMatteo said.

DeMatteo feels that a $50 price-cut just isn't enough for the system. He's thinking more like $100. "I don't know that $50 gets you that much," DeMatteo said.

Xbox 360 E-74 Failures Now Covered Under Extended Warranty
Posted by Joe Paulding - Tuesday, April 14, 2009 6:50 PM

According to Major Nelson, Microsoft has decided to cover Xbox 360 E-74 hardware failures under the same three-year extended warranty that covered the Red Ring of Death. In addition, the warranty will be extended retroactively, so if you experienced an E-74 failure and had to send it in for repairs along with a credit card number, you will be reimbursed. Here's the official message from Major Nelson himself:

"The team is aware that a very small percentage of our Xbox 360 customers have reported receiving an error that displays E74 on their screen and after investigating the issue, we have determined that the E74 error message can indicate the general hardware failure that is associated with three flashing red lights error on the console. As such, we will be covering any repairs due to the E74 error message under the three year warranty we announced related to the three flashing lights error, as well as reimbursing any customers that have already paid for an E74 related repair. This applies to new consoles for the original retail purchaser, whether purchased before or after this change."

This is obviously great news for 360 owners, and on a personal note, myself. I managed to dodge the Red Ring of Death in my first year and a half of Xbox 360 ownership, but was greeted with an E-74 one night while playing Ninja Gaiden 2. You can imagine I was not at all pleased when I called Microsoft tech support.

The gentlemen on the other end of the line informed me that E-74 was not covered under the three year extended warranty, and that I would be charged $100 for the repairs. At that point I considered seeing if there was a way to further break the 360 and induce a red ring, but after a half an hour of arguing, I handed over my credit card number. Two weeks later I had my Xbox 360 back, with a "guarantee" that it wouldn't break again, and so far so good. However, the sting of having to pay $100 to repair a historically faulty console lingered.

It's on that note that I can say I'm thrilled to hear today's announcement, 'cus I should have a $100 check in the mail. Although I'm sure Microsoft isn't thrilled to have to pony up a little more money after the massive amount they had to spend fixing the Red Ring of Death. So how about you? Have you experienced E-74? Relieved that you won't have to worry about it happening anymore (provided you're in the three year window)? Let us know.

Judge Mathis Making Game Featuring Prison Rape
Posted by Stephen Johnson - Monday, April 13, 2009 9:04 AM
Television Judge Greg Mathis and director Matty Rich say they are teaming up to make a game for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 called Mathis “Detroit” Street Judge.

Rich directed excellent indie urban drama Straight out of Brooklyn in the early 90s and not-so-excellent video game 187 Ride or Die in 2005, and Mathis settles the disputes of the lost and hopeless on syndicated TV. So the pairing is interesting, to say the least. The duo plan to make a Grand Theft Auto-style action game featuring prison rape.

“The main difference between our game and Grand Theft Auto is that players will have to deal with the justice system and consequences for their actions,” said Mathis. “When you go to prison, you gain credibility when you come back on the streets. On the other hand, when you go to prison you can also be raped. So take your chances. We may see young people who make the wrong choice and go to prison and are assaulted repeatedly (in this game).”

I think I'd rather not be raped repeatedly.

But at the risk of making this a more serious issue than it deserves to be, while it's possible to play "urban" games like GTA IV without committing any crimes, players' environment encourages criminality very strongly. If you're all but forced into a life of crime by playing the Judge Mathis game, and then you're raped in prison, maybe that makes a compelling social statement. If it wasn't for the involvement of Matty Rich (seriously, Netflix Straight out of Brooklyn; it's brilliant) I'd think this was ridiculous, but as it stands, hey, maybe this game will be smarter than the people laughing at it.

Wii 'Fatal Frame' Likely Not Coming To US
Posted by Stephen Johnson - Wednesday, April 08, 2009 8:36 AM

Survival-horror fans in Japan are lucky. They've been playing Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse on their Wiis since July 2008. But here in the States, you've probably already noticed that you haven't been playing it, because it hasn't been released here.

Fans have been patient, but that patience probably won't be rewarded with an American release of this photographing ghosts game. In April, Reggie Fils-Aime confirmed that Nintendo wouldn't release the game here, telling MTV, "We are not the publisher of that title in the Americas." That statement implies that there could be a publisher of the game in America, but sadly, it looks like there won't be.

Can Wii Be A Primary Gaming System?
Posted by Blake Snow - Tuesday, April 07, 2009 3:15 PM

The Wii has been an astounding success. With 50 million units sold in just two and a half years, it's become the fastest-selling console of all time. Everybody loves the Wii, it seems.

Ask someone who plays games for at least 10-15 hours per week, though, and you'll likely get a very different response. "Just because McDonald's sells a gazillion burgers a year doesn't make it good food," the naysayers analogize. So how come Wii lacks gamer street-cred?

"From an enthusiast’s perspective, if you look at the genres that core gamers traditionally have focused on, such as shooters, adventures, RPGs, strategy, platformers, and some sports and racing franchises, you'll see an abundance of these being released fox Xbox and PS3," says Scott Pelland, former managing editor for Nintendo Power. "Comparatively, the percentage of titles in those categories seems to be higher for others than on Wii."

That observation is the very reason some enthusiasts resent the Wii. If a system can't satisfy a continual appetite for familiar games, it can't be a primary gaming system, the thinking goes. But Pelland argues that core gamers are not indicative of the collective and growing number of people that play games, so their concerns should be taken with a grain of salt.

"The thing to keep in mind is that enthusiasts are passionate about their personal likes and they're fierce advocates for their platform of choice," he says. "But as a predictive measure of gaming trends, the narrow focus of traditional gamers is limited. No one is deprived of Halo or Zelda, so while a hardcore concern reflects a passion for games, it doesn't reflect the reality of the marketplace or the industry."

Having worked at Nintendo for twenty years until leaving the company in 2007, I ask Pelland if his former employer was ever cognizant of gamer anxiety towards Wii. "We were certainly aware of concerns being expressed by enthusiasts, including the gaming media," he says. "Through the lead-up to launch of the Wii in 2006, everyone was so focused on the PlayStation 3 that we had to address this perception."

As an example, Pelland reminds me how Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime promised on many occasions that Wii would have games for both core players and the expanded audience — rhetoric that continues to this day. "Our strategy to embrace the entire household and to invite new gamers into the fold was the right direction for Nintendo," he says. And he can cite record profits to back it up.

But again, gamers aren't impressed with sales; they're impressed with games. And many gamers still feel Nintendo has neglected their tastes. Pelland disagrees and is quick to defend the Wii's existing library, sans mentioning third-party favorites such as No More Heroes, Boom Blox, Tiger Woods, and Guitar Hero World Tour. " Games like Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy, Smash Bros., and Mario Kart are beloved by everyone," he says. "They may not be as gritty or violent as other core games, but they have been embraced by enthusiasts."

Looking at it that way, it's difficult to argue that Wii has "no games," even if you feel the system is lacking. So why are avid players still suspicious then? Pelland blames a "get rich quick" mentality on the part of game makers. "Over the last year many publishers have jumped on the Wii bandwagon, hoping to cash in on the newest craze," he says. "It's an opportune time for publishers to release their game before a dozen others."

Thanks to supply and demand, however, he says that model won't last long. "Over time, we’ll see a balanced release schedule take hold as publishers look for opportunities of demand that aren't being met. At that point, we may even find more core games headed to Wii than to the other platforms."

That trend might have already begun. Last year, Sega announced three games exclusively designed for Wii with seasoned gamers in mind: The House of the Dead: Overkill, MadWorld, and the upcoming Conduit. The first two were well received upon their release, and the latter has become the hardcore battle cry for hungry Wii owners.

But will a graphically inferior console like Wii ever be able to spiritually lead the industry? It's a question that has many gamers feeling apprehensive, especially since progressive visuals have always been a harbinger of the future.

"Some enthusiasts claim that technical limitations will prevent a greater number of core games for Wii, but technical limitations won't exist if developers are designing first for Wii, and that is likely to be case if Wii continues to eclipse the other platforms in sales," says Pelland. "Most publishers won't ignore the installed base, even if they would prefer to publish core high-definition titles."

In the end, the former Nintendo executive — now marketing consultant — says it doesn't really matter. "I was part of the launch team that created the marketing strategy, and as one of the few 'game' guys on the team, I was often asked if I thought core gamers would accept Wii," he recounts. "What I told the team then is what I still believe; if you make great gaming experiences, gamers will flock to your products.

"It's about quality not genre."

Original 'Star Fox' Creator Not Interested In Making 'Star Fox' For Wii
Posted by Billy Berghammer - Friday, April 03, 2009 5:25 PM
After interviewing Q Games President Dylan Cuthbert about PixelJunk Eden, we hit him up on some questions with a franchise he helped create for Nintendo – Star Fox. As most Star Fox fans would agree, there were few Star Fox titles worth playing: Star Fox, Star Fox 64, and Star Fox Command. Not surprisingly, Cuthbert was involved in the creation of two out of three - Star Fox, and Star Fox Command. Cuthbert was also involved with the development of Star Fox 2, however sadly, even though that game was never released, there were apparently elements from that game - including the tank levels - that made it into Star Fox 64.

Since the release of Star Fox Command on the Nintendo DS, there hasn’t been a Star Fox title for quite a while. Considering the fact that there hasn’t been a Star Fox title released on the Wii so far, most would believe that this year will be the year where Fox McCloud will climb into his Arwing for his first Wii Star Fox voyage.

So will Cuthbert and Q Games be at the helm? Not likely….

Sony Predicts A 10 To 15 Percent Sales Boost Next Year
Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, April 02, 2009 8:21 AM

While Sony has yet to announce its sales figures for last year, that doesn't mean the company has no idea how things went. Sony is confident that things went very well. At least, that what SCEA marketing boss John Koller told video game site VG247.

Koller said, “We’ve been very bullish on PSP...We had our largest sales year ever last year." Koller says Sony is shooting for "about 10-15 percent north of that this year."

As for the PlayStation 3, Koller is equally confident. "We also had our best sales year for PS3 last year and we’ll look to go north of that by a similar percentage...That’s being driven by, in a lot of ways, by our first-party software line-up, which is outstanding, but there’s some third-party titles coming. The lineup’s very strong.” The exec added: “What I mentioned there was North America-focused, but you could probably extrapolate that globally as well.”

These are some awfully confident predictions, but I think the PS3 is ripe for a good year. There are some pretty huge exclusives coming to the system (God of War III, Gran Turismo 5, Uncharted 2, etc.), and if any one of them gets a reputation as a "must have" it's going to drive sale up at least somewhat. If the price of the system is lowered just a little bit and the economy starts to pick up, who knows? Sony might actually beat its own prediction. I wouldn't put any money on a Sony 15 percent bump, but it's a definite possibility. What do you think: What, if anything, can Sony do to boost its sales by 10-15 percent next year?

Xbox LIVE Avatars Receive Formal Wear
Posted by Stephen Johnson - Wednesday, April 01, 2009 7:49 AM

When my Xbox LIVE avatar and I are playing an important game of Uno, I don't want the little dude to dress like a damn bum. I care enough about the game to look my very best; why shouldn't he? Luckily for me and my avatar, Xbox LIVE has released a line of more formal clothing today, so I'll finally be able to to crush my Uno opponents by intimidating them with a power tie.

Here's what the company is offering:

Male

Blue Formal Shirt
Moleskin Pants
Waistcoat and Shirt
Suit and Tie

Female

Pencil Skirt
Slacks
Pinstripe Blazer
Twin Set
Microsoft classifies the new clothing as "business wear," so if you want to dress your little self-representation like a cubicle farmer on employee evaluation day, now you can. Casual Friday be damned! All the new clothing is free.

Seriously, though, I never use my avatar for anything. I wish avatar support was built into a few more titles. It seems like a waste to create very cool avatars and not have anything to really do with them. What about you? Do you like avatars? How would you like to see them used in games?

Man Dies While Playing 'Wii Fit', He Was Healthy Otherwise?
Posted by Brian Leahy - Monday, March 30, 2009 10:39 AM
Let me be very clear up front: I am not mocking the man that unfortunately died while exercising on Wii Fit. I am mocking mainstream press coverage of the unfortunate event.

First, the story. A 25-year old man collapsed while 'jogging' on the Wii Fit Balance Board and was declared dead on arrival by paramedics. The man was reportedly "fit and well" and enjoyed things like fishing and playing the drums. This is what I have a problem with...

The man obviously was not "fit and well." How do I know this? He died while doing moderate exercise on a 2-inch step. Sometimes, things like this happen without warning. It certainly isn't the Wii Fit's fault. People die every day and go unmentioned in the news, but the mainstream press sees that he was playing a video game and it's time to write an article.

This sensationalism is unneeded. This doesn't mean that the Wii Fit is a danger to the millions exercising on the Balance Board. This isn't about a manufacturing flaw in the board that makes it dangerous. The man was just exercising and it was too much for him, for whatever reason.

It's no different than "after this commercial break, we'll tell you what household object could be killing you..."

GDC 2009: Nintendo To Show DSi And Wii SDHC Card Connectivity At E3 2009?
Posted by Raymond Padilla - Saturday, March 28, 2009 2:29 AM

Wii owners around the world were thrilled with the announcement that the console now supports SDHC cards up to 32GB. While most gamers were thinking about all the Virtual Console titles they can fit on new cards, few were thinking that Nintendo had plans larger than simply offering its customers superior storage options (which is, decidedly, a good thing). It looks like connectivity 2.0 is on the way. Word on the street (meaning I literally received this information on the street while walking around GDC 2009) is that Nintendo will go large with Wii and DSi connectivity via SD cards at E3 2009.

This could mean that games can be started on a Wii and continued on a DSi when the player is away from home. The progress made on the road will be reflected when the gamer next plays the game on a Wii. That sounds pretty awesome (and practical) to me. You get the benefits of big-screen gaming and the convenience of portability all in one title.

Of course gamers with a PlayStation Portable and component cables can already do this, but PSP games are not specifically designed to exploit the advantages of television gaming. From what I understand, there will be titles that take advantage of the unique capabilities of DSi and Wii, respectively. The possibilities are certainly interesting, but I want to see a fun implementation of this (should it be true) before I get too excited.

Anyway, do you have any nifty ideas for DSi/Wii connectivity through SD cards? What would you like to see or do in a game that can be played off of a card on both systems?

Nintendo's Iwata Announces Wii Storage System
Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Wednesday, March 25, 2009 3:02 PM
Nintendo President Satoru Iwata announced a new storage system for the Wii during his GDC Keynote earlier today. The storage system, which is composed of high capacity SD cards that are launchable from the Wii menu, will allow users to store Virtual Console and WiiWare games for play later. This will significantly add to the Wii experience, allowing Virtual Console to expand and include some larger third-party games, such as STARFORCE by Tecmo Ltd., and Mappy, Gaplus and Tower of Druaga by Namco Bandai Games Inc. starting today.

Also in the keynote were mentions of the release of the Nintendo DSI on April 5th, as well as talk of a new Zelda game for the DS, called The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, which will incorporate new and old, appealing to both longtime Zelda aficionados and people who are new to the game. Finally, Iwata noted that the Wii has shipped over 50 million units, and the DS has shipped over 100 million, expanding opportunities for developers everywhere to reach a much larger audience than ever before.

GameStop SVP Says Wii Supply Has Caught Up To Demand, Price Cut Not Necessary
Posted by Raymond Padilla - Thursday, March 19, 2009 2:32 PM
GameStop senior vice president Bob McKenzie feels that the Nintendo Wii is doing fine. With supply finally catching up to demand, he seems satisfied with the Wii's prospects for the first half of 2009. In fact, he's so bullish on the Wii that he believes a price cut is unnecessary. In an interview with Gamasutra he said:

"You know, three years later, we finally have enough inventory on the shelf, and we've got a couple of weeks in supply of this. That's good because we can finally determine and gauge it before we get into the fourth holiday season. I don't think they need to make the price move down either, on the Wii. I think finally we've gotten to the point where we're going to be able to get a real good run rate on this thing."

It will be interesting see how Wii sales pan out in 2009. Some analysts believe that the console is approaching its saturation point and that sales will slow down substantially. However, the last few months of North American and European sales figures do not reflect this. Certainly Wii sales have to slow down at some point, but how sharp will the drop off be? If sales start to slide, will a price drop be the answer? Probably. Strong sales have allowed the Wii to maintain a steady price since its launch. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if Nintendo cut the Wii's price before this year's holiday season (at which point its competitors are likely to have gone through multiple price cuts).

I know there are (sadly) a lot of Wii haters among TheFeed readers. Now that the Wii appears to be readily available, will you go out and buy it? Or are you waiting for a price cut? Would games like Grand Slam Tennis take you off the Haterade? Leave a comment and let me know (please)!

eebo To Launch Console Aimed At Gamers In Developing Countries
Posted by Raymond Padilla - Thursday, March 19, 2009 11:52 AM

Millions of gamers aren't happy with the price of current-generation consoles, but what about gamers in developing countries? In places where the average monthly salary equals a few hundred U.S. dollars, buying a PlayStation 3 or an Xbox 360 is out of the question. This is where Zeebo comes in. Set to launch in Brazil and expand to other developing nations, Zeebo's console will be cheaper than the current crop of gaming systems and feature less expensive games, as well. VentureBeat's "Dancing" Dean Takahashi reported:

"The console is about the size of a Wii and plays games with the graphics quality of a decade ago. It can handle 3-D graphics but can’t match the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 in that respect. It’s more like the quality in between the original PlayStation and PlayStation 2, which debuted in the 1990s. The resolution is 640 x 480, about the same as many older computers. The system is unique in that it usesQualcomm’s 3G chip set as its central processor and graphics. That’s right. It uses a chip set meant for high-end smart phones."
It's interesting that this console uses a smart-phone chip, but according to Zeebo CEO John Rizzo, wireless broadband connections are more prevalent than wired ones in the countries the company is targeting.

Personally, I'm not sure that Zeebo will take off or that it's even necessary. In many developing countries, consoles from one or two generations ago sell well. In those countries, software is often pirated and sold for a few dollars (or less). Rizzo will be at next week's GamesBeat conference, so hopefully I'll get a chance to ask him how Zeebo can compete with older, established consoles and software piracy.

Cheap Game Of The Week: 'Fable' On Xbox LIVE
Posted by Patrick Roche-Sowa - Monday, March 16, 2009 1:53 PM

Fable, the prequel to X-Play's 2008 Game of the Year Fable II, has been available for download on Xbox LIVE for quite some time. This week, Microsoft is giving us all a chance to relive the past for less, discounting Fable's price by 33% to a mere 800 Microsoft Points, or about 10 bucks.

It's a great time to relive the over-hype and broken promises that Peter Molyneux has become known for in the gaming industry. However, if you can take Fable at face value and forget about the lofty goals that Molyneux sets for himself, it's an enjoyable experience and well worth a 10 spot.

Government: Smoking Pot Makes You Bad at Games
Posted by Stephen Johnson - Tuesday, March 10, 2009 7:41 AM

Dude, what? The U.S. Drug Czar's office has declared that smoking marijuana makes you bad at playing games. "Getting high affects your brain in ways that may directly influence your gaming ability," warns the Drug Czar's "Above the Influence" Web site, citing the impairment of "everything from reaction time to reasoning skills." According to the site, marijuana may lead to a harder time "defeating an opponent and beating a game."

The government's new video ads feature game avatars lamenting the fact that their players got bad at playing games because they smoked up. "It's not that the challenges got harder, it's that Chris's skills got worse," a fantasy RPG character says, "Why? Because Chris started getting high while he was in control."

No matter how you feel about the idea of an elf telling you not to get high (the talking elves usually tell me to smoke more!) there is a huge difference between these public service ads and the propaganda of the past. "The Man" used to tell you that smoking weed would lead to harder drugs, make you into a raving addict, destroy your life, and make your brain into an egg on a frying pan. The message here is less hysterical and more realistic: If you smoke pot, you will suck at games. Alright. I'll buy that. Of course no mention is made of whether gaming while high might make you have more fun, even if you do fail more often...

What do you guys think: Do stoners make worse gamers? Does pot slow reaction time and lead to lead sandwiches in first-person shooters? Will this line of argument convince you not to toke up? Tell us below.

'Halo 3' Hits One Billion Matchmaking Games
Posted by Brian Leahy - Tuesday, March 03, 2009 10:13 AM

Bungie has revealed that one billion matchmaking games of Halo 3 have been played since its release. That's insane. To put that into perspective, Halo 2 is currently sitting at 798 million games played and has been out for much longer. Although to be fair, people are probably done playing Halo 2 for the most part.

Using its crazy database skills, Bungie has determined the exact amount of time spent in matchmaking, which does not include singleplayer, offline play, or custom games:

Total Matchmaking Playtime: 2,023,153,340,764 seconds or 64,109 years.

What?!

I'd be really interested in seeing where Call of Duty 4 is with its PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 data, but this is really a great accomplishment for Bungie.

By the way, I've contributed 991 games to that total! What about you?

DonateGames.Org Accepts Game Donations And Sells Them To Benefit Sick People
Posted by Raymond Padilla - Friday, February 27, 2009 4:53 PM
Yesterday, I posted a video of some of the top game developers addressing the issue of used-game sales. A lot of you were disappointed at the various stances taken in the video. The used-games issue can be a dirty one. Sorting out "who's right" between consumers, retailers, developers, and publishers is a tough task. Now let's throw a charity into the mix! Ars Technica has reported on a charity that accepts used games and resells them for the benefit of those suffering from life-threatening diseases.

"Fittingly called DonateGames.org, gamers can send unwanted games to the charity's headquarters in Aliso Viejo, CA in exchange for a tax deductible receipt. From there the charity hopes players will buy a different game from their online store, then rinse and repeat."
Gamestop has shown how lucrative selling used games can be. If DonateGames.org gets a good amount of donations, it can make a ton of money for a good cause. While developers and publishers are irked that they don't see any money from used-game sales, I don't think any of them will begrudge a charity for exploiting this model.

Anyone out there interested in donating games? Would you prefer buying used games from a charity instead of a traditional retailer?

I think it is sad. Without all the details, I feel for those. What if they already sent it to pay off some big debts, then to have received the letter...wow, then that would hurt them bad. I have really mixed feelings as I am a laid off employee, not from microsoft. Not only too boot, my husband was laid off today. So now what. It is rough out there.

I think they have to return it If they don't Microsoft can sue them for the money, which I think is completely ridiculous. It's their mistake. They should have to pay for it.

Microsoft Asks For Refund From Laid Off Workers
Posted by Stephen Johnson - Monday, February 23, 2009 12:41 PM

In case of insult added to injury, Microsoft is asking some recently laid off ex-employees to return part of the severance the company gave them. Oops.

Some of Microsoft's pink-slipped workers received a letter over the weekend that reads, in part:

"An inadvertent administrative error occurred that resulted in an overpayment in severance pay by Microsoft. We ask that you repay the overpayment and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience to you."

The company confirmed that it did send the letter, but categorizes the incident as a private one, between it and its ex-workers. It won't say how many letters were sent or how large the overpayment was.

If you were laid off, would you return the money? I probably would, because I'm an honest guy. But I'd return it all in pennies, just to be a jerk!

January Sales: Wii and Wii Fit Set Records, Industry Grows
by Game Informer Online
POSTED: 2/13/2009 3:11 PM

According to the NPD Group sales data for January 2009, Nintendo set software and hardware sales records for the month while revenue rose 13 percent for the video game industry as a whole.

Wii Fit sold 770,000 units in January, setting a record for software sales in the month. The title sold 300,000 more units than second place Wii Play. Mario Kart Wii ranked third with just under 300,000, and Electronic Arts’ Left 4 Dead on Xbox 360 topped all non-Nintendo games at the number four slot.

Wii sold 679,200 units in January, setting a record for software sales in the month. Nintendo DS and Xbox 360 ranked two and three with 500,000 and 300,000 units, respectively.

NPD analyst Anita Frazier notes the continued success of games released months ago and tells how this data implies new consumers are still discovering the industry. "Only two of the top 10 games this month were new releases," said Frazier. "The continued strength of games that have been in the market for some time clues us in to just how many new consumers are coming into the industry. This broadening of the audience for gaming will help buoy the industry through these tough economic times, provided they have enough compelling content to keep them interested."

Racism In 'Resident Evil 5'?
Posted by Raymond Padilla - Friday, February 06, 2009 11:28 AM

Is racism prevalent in Resident Evil 5? According to Eurogamer's Dan Whitehead, it is. In a recent preview of the game, Whitehead claimed, "Where Africans are concerned, the game seems to be suggesting, bloodthirsty savagery just comes with the territory." He went on to say:

"There's a cut-scene of a white blonde woman being dragged off, screaming, by black men. When you attempt to rescue her, she's been turned and must be killed. If this has any relevance to the story it's not apparent in the first three chapters, and it plays so blatantly into the oldclichés of the dangerous 'dark continent' and the primitive lust of its inhabitants that you'd swear the game was written in the 1920s. ThatSheva neatly fits the approved Hollywood model of the light-skinned black heroine, and talks more like Lara Croft than her thickly-accented foes, merely compounds the problem rather than easing it. There are even more outrageous and outdated images to be found later in the game, stuff that I was honestly surprised to see in 2009."
Millions of people have downloaded the Resident Evil 5 demo, so I'm sure many of you have played it. Do you think the game's content is racist? I'm curious to hear your thoughts on what will likely be a hot-button issue.

Good thing I dont live in ARIZONA.

Super Bowl Interrupted By Porn
Posted by Stephen Johnson - Monday, February 02, 2009 11:52 AM
If you live around Tucson, Arizona and don't watch football, you missed one of the most exciting Super Bowls ever played. Oh, and you missed hardcore pornography too.

Toward the end of the game, just as Fitzgerald finished running for that amazing 64-yard touchdown that put the Cards in the lead, Comcast Cable broke in with a short clip from a pornographic movie starring adult actor Evan Stone and his, um, most famous appendage. Stone is an award winning actor and according to G4's Frank Meyer, a close personal friend of Eddie Van Halen. The offending video was only broadcast to standard definition viewers.

Comcast chalks the illicit broadcast up to foul play: “Our initial investigation suggests this was an isolated malicious act,” spokeswoman Kelle Maslyn said in a statement. “We are mortified by last evening’s Super Bowl interruption and we apologize to our customers. We are conducting a thorough investigation to determine how this happened.”

I cannot wait for that investigation to finish.

In the interest of full disclosure(ha!), G4 is owned by Comcast.

Gamestop is a big problem when it comes to publishers. The used games Gamestop sells to you is all profit for them. Gamestop will offer a person up to $25 trade in value for a recently released game. Then they turn around and start selling these games at a slightly lower price like $54.99 if the title is still new. They drop the price a few dollars the older the title gets. Then of course there are other titles I have notice such as the Faital Frame series for PS2, which are older titles. If you were to try and buy them from Gamestop they are $40 and $50 a piece for games that are years old. People that don't want to or can't afford to pay $60 each for new games are happy to wait to save the money. The other side of this problem is the publishers themselves because with what they charge for games now a days leads to people wanting to buy them as cheep as possible. As I see it two things need to happen. First publishers need to lower the cost a little. Second Game stop and the publishers need to come up with a deal where the publishers will get a percentage of the used sales or Gamestop needs to wait a few months to a full year from the release to start offering the titles used. It only seems fair.

Take-Two Fires A Shot At GameStop
Posted by Raymond Padilla - Thursday, January 29, 2009 10:10 AM

Take-Two has launched the latest salvo in the war between game publishers and GameStop. I guess the publisher wasn't happy with the retailer's two-billion dollar year -- haters (kidding). In a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz, company CEO Ben Feder said:

"GameStop continues to aggressively push their used game business, which is having a meaningful negative impact on sales of new games. Management is frustrated with this trend and is examining ways to ameliorate the problem, which includes strategies around online play and downloadable content which extend the lifespan of AAA titles."

As I mentioned last week, used-game sales have become such a hot-button issue that some publishers were talking about combating the GameStops of the world on a design level. While it might make sense to publishers, I believe that this way of thinking has the potential to taint games. Downloadable content (DLC) can be very cool, but I'd hate to see publishers hold back on things that could ship with a game, but are withheld for used-game sales considerations. I could easily see publishers ruining some excellent work by forcing developers to go heavy with online play and DLC.

Am I being paranoid? Do you think there is cause for concern? Can publishers put a wrench in the GameStop machine? Or is the retailer too powerful at the moment?

'Dead Rising 2' Confirmed For Multiplatforms?
Posted by Stephen Johnson - Wednesday, January 28, 2009 1:37 PM

According to Japanese gaming bible Famitsu, the open-world, zombie slaying action game Dead Rising 2 is going multiplatform in 2009! The original Dead Rising was a 360 exclusive, but Capcom has declared 2009 the year of the multiplatform and intends to put out what are mostly games for both the 360 and the PS3.

However, everything is not separate, but equal. Capcom also promised some special goodies exclusive to the 360 version, "in order to show its good will towards the console."

Update: It looks like this story might not be true. Capcom has released this statement: "Dead Rising was a huge success for us and is obviously the kind of game we'd like to continue to make. However, at the moment we have made no official announcement regarding a sequel. As the source is Famitsu, I can only suggest that it was a mistranslation." If only I knew Japanese!

Go ahead and flame me for this, but I think Dead Rising is one of the best games that has ever come out for the 360. In terms of sheer fun, it's near the top of my list. I even liked the janky save system that everyone got in a twist over. I even liked the way survivors would make stupid, panic-fueled moves when you were trying to lead them to safety. I liked everything about that game... except Otis. Damn you, Otis! I don't have time for a long conversation, man -- they're trying to eat my brains, here!

That story was funny so I googled it to see if there was anymore information. This is what FOX Orlando had to report.

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35, Orlando) -- A 19-year-old Deltona man is arrested for assaulting his own mother, with a taco. Dena Moir tells Fox 35 News her son, Zachary Moir, got out of control Wednesday night when she was calling him down for dinner. When he refused to stop playing his X-box and come down for dinner, Dena Moir says she went upstairs and unplugged the game, that's when she says Zachary pushed her and called her a bad name. "I've been having trouble with him for awhile won't work, wont' go to school. He's being rude and disrespectful. Pushing things to the limit as far as the violence.”

A few minutes later Dena says she was in the kitchen cleaning and cooking tacos for dinner when Zachary showed up. That's when she says he slapped her arm and threw a taco in her face. “He went ahead and hit me with the taco and I got taco all over my shirt and kitchen. I’ve threatened to call police before. But anyway this time, I thought he went too far so I called police and he's in jail now.”

Dena Moir called cops and said she wants to press charges. Moir says Zachary has tried to call several times, but she's not picking up the phone yet. She says she's going to let him sit in his jail cell in Volusia County for a few days to teach him a lesson.

Angry Gamer Throws Taco At His Own Mother
Posted by Stephen Johnson - Tuesday, January 20, 2009 2:25 PM
This is the most important video game story of the last several years, so get ready to have your face blown apart by the awesomeness of what I am about to report: Last week, in Volusia County, Florida, video gamer Zachary Moir reportedly threw a taco at his mom.

Apparently, Zachary was playing a video game in his room, and his mom was like, “Come down for dinner!” Zachary didn’t answer, so Moms goes, “Fine, whatever, I’ll unplug your game,” and she did. Zachary responded by pushing her, calling her names and ordering her out of his room.

Later, Zach came down for dinner and reportedly threw a taco in his mother’s face. He is being held without bail by police, who apparently don’t understand how important video games can be.

Like many news stories reported by the biased, mainstream media, this one leaves many vital questions unanswered. What system was Zachary playing? What game? Was this a beef or chicken taco, or was it carnitas? Soft shell or hard shell? Are they even sure it was a taco and not a gordita or some kind of burrito? I invite you, g4tv.com reader, to fill in the important details in the comment section below. What game do you think Zachary was playing? And what was left out of this important story?

UPDATE: According to a better source on this important story (thanks, forhezeanubee), it was an Xbox! Also: Here's what a guy who's accused of throwing a taco at his own mom looks like:

After reading the last post I was sure I had an answer to the question why were the parents letting him play the game. I went and grabbed my copy of Halo 3 to check it and this is the best answer I can give you.

The ESRB rating system has rated Halo 3 M for mature. The problem here lies in the fact that M for mature games are only limited to those 17+ meaning that at his age, 17, there was really no way to stop him from playing it besides taking it away. Now had the kid been a smart ass like I was at that age he would have just gone to a game stop and bought another used copy and avoided this mess all together. Being 17 the store has to sell it to him because he is of legal age. If he was 12, 13 or something then I could see a problem with him having the game in the first place.

The ESRB rating system was put into place to protect the children. I personally take the ESRB rating VERY seriously. I do not have kids of my own and neither does my boyfriend and if you look at our game collection 95% of the games are rated M. If I was to have children around they would NEVER be aloud even in the room that an M rated game is being played. I even made that a rule at my Aunts house once when my boyfriend and I took the last Mortal Kombat (The one before Vs DC) to my Aunts house to show my one cousin that was old enough. I had 2 other cousins 10 and 8 that lived there and I had to take them into the other room and keep them occupied. I play these M games I know the blood and the violence that these games show. I cheer when I get a high kill count in Left 4 Dead (awesome game. You kill zombies), but I know not to run out and start shooting people because I am mature enough to know that 1. it's wrong and 2. people do not come back from the dead.

The most unfortunate problem with the ESRB rating is some of the parents themselves, who just don't care what the ratings are and let their children play anything they want. I have witnessed some crazy things when it comes to parents and ESRB ratings. I watched a mother buy her 9 year old Grand Theft Auto one day! I couldn't believe it when I saw it. The employee that took the game from the child to ring it up looked at the mother and said "Are you sure you want to get this? It's rated M. It's for those 17 and older." The mother got angry and said he was trying to tell her how to raise her child!!! I was in shock. The employee was doing the right thing and informing the parent of the violence and sex in the game. After seeing that and reading this I start to wonder will that be a defence in court now? "Gee I'm so sorry your honor. I had no idea that they wouldn't respawn after I killed them. The video game made me do it." The very idea that the judge believed that weak story, that he didn't know his parents would stay dead is sad.

I believe that some children can be negatively effected by video games... but if they didn't have video games then they'd be negatively effected by tv, comic books, novels etc. I think some people just become unbalanced and they turn to some sort of fantasy life to compensate.

"I firmly believe that Daniel Petric had no idea at the time he hatched this plot that if he killed his parents they would be dead forever,"

Ok.. seriously???? Either he is mentally retarded, or has been living in a shoe box. I'm sorry if I sound harsh but these stories really bother me. The real problem is bad parenting and a lack of personal responsibility.

Here is another story I found very interesting and would like your thoughts on this one

Ohio teen convicted of killing mom over video game
By M.R. KROPKO, Associated Press Writer
ADVERTISEMENT

provided by:

ELYRIA, Ohio -- Although a teenager's obsession with a violent video game may have warped his sense of reality, the boy is guilty of murdering his mother and wounding his father after they took "Halo 3" away from him, a judge ruled Monday.

"I firmly believe that Daniel Petric had no idea at the time he hatched this plot that if he killed his parents they would be dead forever," Lorain County Common Pleas Judge James Burge said.

Nonetheless, Burge rejected the defense attorneys' argument that Petric, 17, was not guilty by reason of insanity.

The defense didn't contest that Petric shot his parents in October 2007 after they took the game away from him, but insisted that the teen's youth and addiction made him less responsible.

Petric may have been addicted, but the evidence also showed he planned the crime for weeks, said Burge, who found the teenager guilty of aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder and other charges.

Tried as an adult, Petric faces a maximum possible penalty of life in prison without parole. The judge didn't set a sentencing date.

The teen's mother, Susan Petric, 43, died of a gunshot wound to the head. Her husband, Mark Petric, a minister at New Life Assembly of God in Wellington, also was shot in the head but survived.

After the verdict was announced, Petric turned to look at his father seated behind him in the courtroom. Mark Petric, who previously said he has forgiven his son, gave an encouraging nod.

Mark Petric and other relatives left the court without comment.

Prosecutors said Petric planned to kill his parents because he was angry that his father would not allow him to play the video game, in which players shoot alien monsters that have taken over the Earth.

On the night of the shooting, Petric used his father's key to open a lockbox and remove a 9 mm handgun and the game.

Mark Petric testified that his son came into the room and asked: "Would you guys close your eyes? I have a surprise for you." He testified that he expected a pleasant surprise. Then his head went numb from the gunshot.

Deputy prosecuting attorney Anthony Cillo argued during the trial that the teenager had planned to make it appear to be a murder-suicide by putting the gun in his father's hand.

Defense Attorney James Kersey said that when the teenager fled the grisly scene, he only took one item with him: the "Halo 3" game.

Bungie LLC, once part of Microsoft, developed the Xbox 360-exclusive Halo 3, and Microsoft owns the game's intellectual property. Microsoft declined to comment beyond a statement: "We are aware of the situation and it is a tragic case."

Found this interesting for those of you waiting to get a Ps3

PS3 will be $299 in April, analyst predicts
Xbox 360 cuts to follow; no change for Wii
By Mike Smith
ADVERTISEMENT

Could the days of the $400 Playstation 3 be numbered?

So says financial analyst Michael Pachter, who predicted this week that Sony will trim the price of its cheapest Playstation 3 pack to a "more affordable" $299 in April, and that an Xbox 360 price cut will follow by June.

And the Wii? Don't hold your breath. "We expect Nintendo to maintain Wii pricing at $249 until the company sees signs that demand is slowing, which means a price cut may not happen until late in the year, if at all," Pachter said.

Upcoming PS3 Titles
Like any analyst, Pachter, who is employed by securities firm Wedbush-Morgan, isn't always right, but he boasts a healthy hit rate at anticipating similar moves in the past, notably predicting PS3 and Xbox 360 price cuts in 2007. Don't expect official confirmation from either Microsoft or Sony, though: telling your customers about price cuts four months in advance tends not to be a very common strategy.

Ailing Sony, which is tipped to be about to post its first annual loss for 14 years, could well expect a significant sales boost if Pachter's prediction pans out. The Playstation 3 is heading into 2009 with a bumper lineup of upcoming exclusive games, including Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, God of War 3, and superhero-themed DC Universe Online, and a lower price point could well lend the console much-needed momentum.

Wow that is very intersting. Thanks for the insight. I have noticed there have been things in the game that have bugs like my beloved Fable 2. Which I think they have made patches for it. Woo hoo.

From what I learned last semester in my intro to Game production class (I go to DeVry University for Game and Simulation Production) the number one reason for holding a game back is bugs. Most companies would rather send out the game as bug free as possible to keep consumers happy.

There is also the debate of whether you go ahead and ship a game to make a deadline when you know its buggy and release a patch later, or push it back to try and fix big bugs.

I use to work at the game store and the reason I learned that games are finished but are pushed back is to build hype for it. That is mostly the only reason why they would push a game back for release.

For all that may be interested I recently found out that God of War 3 which was scheduled for release on the PS3 in March of 2009, has now been pushed back to October of 2009. I have not found the official reason for the push back yet, but according to Game Stop employees they weren't happy with it and needed to make some improvements.

Sony's Solution: Sell A Cripple Version Of The PlayStation 3?
Posted by Raymond Padilla - Tuesday, December 30, 2008 12:25 PM

With Sony currently stuck in third place in the console wars, it seems like everyone and their mothers are coming with ideas on how the company can sell more PlayStation 3 consoles. The latest wacky idea comes from GigaOm's Wagner James Au. In order to raise the installed base of the PS3, Au believes that Sony should make a cheaper, Internet-driven device that does not have a Blu-ray player.

"The short-term solution is to manufacture a new PS3 line that comes without a Blu-ray. Sony could sell it for considerably less than the current $400 MSRP. While the standard PS3 will still be for sale, this cheaper model (call it 'PS3 Net') could come with several consumer-selected Sony gamespre -installed in the hard drive, and take advantage of high-speed broadband, especially in Japan, for downloading games, movies, and other content via the PlayStation Network. (And PS3 Net owners can still buy an externalBlu-ray drive later.)"
Full disclosure: I've worked with Au in the past and I like him. However, this has got to be one of the dumbest solutions I've heard of. As many of you know, I have no love for the Xbox 360 Arcade sku; I believe it's crippled and pretty much a rip off. To suggest that Sony sell an even more limited system seems utterly ridiculous to me. I can't see a consumer being satisfied solely relying on the (still evolving) PlayStation Network for all their new experiences. This "PS3 Net" system would also take away the machine's biggest differentiators: pure power. Au seems to want to dress the PS3 up in Wii clothing, in hopes of getting the numbers that Nintendo currently enjoys. It doesn't work that way.

Maybe I'm wrong though. Do you think a "PS3 Net" system would appeal to a larger crowd? Is crippling the console and selling it at a low price the answer?

Cost for PS3 Dramatically Reduced
Posted by Sinden Lee - Tuesday, December 23, 2008 1:52 PM
In the last two years, Sony's cost to produce the PS3 has dramatically decreased. The console which once cost $840 to manufacture now reportedly costs Sony $448.73 (it retails for $399).

While we've seen Microsoft cut back the price of its Xbox 360 three times, it's no wonder the PS3 didn't do so well over the holidays with its price remaining at $399. Whereas the Xbox 360 sold 836,000 units in the U.S. last month, the PS3 merely sold 378,000 units (the Wii sold an impressive two million).

So how will Sony remain competitive and possibly break-even, or even dare to turn a profit? It may have to slash its price point and reduce or combine chips in its console.

When Sony launched the PS3, it contained 4,048 parts. It now contains 2,820 --dramatically reduced by a third of what it had before. The price of its Cell processors and Nvidia graphic chipset have decreased, as well, adding to its cost savings.

Although retail price-cuts are a benefit to the consumer, at what cost to the manufacturer? To stay competitive, it's understandable Sony must do this. However, won't this hurt its cost savings..talk about one step forward, two steps back.

Will EA Revert Back To The "Evil Empire"?!?
Posted by Raymond Padilla - Friday, December 12, 2008 5:19 PM
It's no secret that Electronic Arts (EA) is going through a rough time right now. Even analysts are calling out the company's financial performance, with people like Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter saying, "After 20 months of believing that the EA turnaround was just around the corner, our patience and confidence has eroded."

That said, the company is having one of its best years ever from a critical standpoint. CEO John Riccitiello recently pointed out that the company published 17 games this year with a Metacritic average of 80 or above.

In recent years, EA has made a commitment to publishing original games, new franchises, and quality titles. That commitment has paid off with games like Left 4 Dead, Spore, Mirror's Edge, Skate, Boom Blox, Dead Space, and more. That dedication can be seen in EA's partnerships with top-quality developers like id, Starbreeze, and (most recently) Double Fine. Even id's outspoken John Carmack has said that EA is no longer the "Evil Empire" and that, "When we went out and talked to people, especially EA Partners people like Valve, we got almost uniformly positive responses from them."

In short, EA has quickly become one of gaming's creative powerhouses, but will its poor financial performance ultimately cause it to revert to the "Evil Empire"???

I'm not surprised at all. Our generation has grown up with video games, so its an accepted form of entertainment just like movies. Adults know how much fun they had playing Atari, Nintendo, etc. so buying a new system and playing isn't a stretch for them.

Pew Survey Shows 50% Gamers Are Women
Posted by Sinden Lee - Monday, December 08, 2008 3:04 PM

Call it astonishing...call it remarkable...maybe even predictably expected -- I don't know. But a survey of statistics on adults who play video games released by the Pew Internet & American Life Projects, will have you talking...a lot.

The survey rounded up 2,054 adults (margin of error, 2 percent) last year from varying social-economic backgrounds. You can guess, however, that younger adults were probably more likely to play than grandma and grandpa.

81 percent between ages 18 and 29 play video games.
23 percent 65 years old and older play video games.

"As various people become more accustomed to spending their entertainment time playing games, we will continue to see this spread throughout society," said Amanda Lenhart, senior research specialist at Pew. "There are people who talk about games as a new genre, a new art form."

This certainly should dismantle any previously held stereotypes about video-game fans. It did for me. I didn't know that 50 percent of adults who play are women!

Granted, video-game companies have really stepped it up in the last few years to market to women and families via casual games -- Nintendo has had the most success with the Wii.

I was also surprised that the Pew survey says you're more inclined to play video games if you have a college degree: 57 percent of players attended at least some college; whereas 51 percent were high-school graduates; and 40 percent had less than a high school education.

If you're a parent with kids, you're more susceptible to being a gamer because these parents generally are younger than moms and dads with older children.

66 percent of parents with kids under 17 are gamers; those adults without kids rated at 47 percent.

So are moms and dads playing Animal Crossing: City Folk, Wii Fit, or Left 4 Dead with little Tommy and Janie?

While some parents may use video games as a form of family play time (let's hope the content is appropriate), it appears for many parents, it's just a pure form of escape and entertainment.

Says one mother, "Real life can suck, and games are designed not to, that's why it's important for most people."

The latest Pew survey conducted this fall shows 97 percent of teenagers play video games.

Are you surprised as I am by the numbers?

'Mirror's Edge', 'Need For Speed', And 'Rock Band 2' Under-performing, Heads To Roll
Posted by Raymond Padilla - Monday, December 08, 2008 8:54 AM
The folks at Lazard Capital Markets aren't feeling very good about game-publishing giant, Electronic Arts (EA). One company analyst feels that some of its 2008 holiday releases are under-performing and that heads might roll in the near future. Gamasutra quotes analyst Colin Sebastian as saying:

"Specifically, we believe several EA titles are tracking below plan at retail this holiday, including Need for Speed Undercover (with disappointing reviews), new franchise Mirror's Edge, and Rock Band 2. We believe further cost and franchise reductions are likely. Importantly, we believe EA is continuing to review its cost structure and franchise base, and it is possible that management will announce further cuts in headcount and the development pipeline (including existing franchises) over the coming quarters."

Sebastian's words are pretty wimpy. I don't need some highly-paid analyst to tell me that EA is "continuing to review its cost structure and franchise base" -- every game publisher should be doing that! Saying that job cuts are "possible" is pretty useless too. A lot of things are possible. A giant space lizard coming to Earth to destroy EA's Redwood Shores campus is possible (really). It would have been far more powerful, interesting, and meaningful if Sebastian used words like "probable" or "very likely". Damn it Sebastian -- say something man!

Fable II: Knothole Island' DLC Screens
Posted by Jeffrey Kanjanapangka - Wednesday, December 03, 2008 2:51 PM

Lionhead Studios drop a handful of new screens for their upcoming Knothole Island DLC expansion coming for Fable II.

"Hundreds of years ago, the tribe from Knothole Glade discovered the existence of an island far off the mainland said to offer its inhabitants full control over their weather. Tired of constant Balverine attacks and damp, dreary weather, the tribe elders decided they would find this mythic island and settle there. The ancient civilisation who originally lived on the island created the magical artifacts that control the weather, and hid them in dangerous caves so that their warriors would be tested every year."

The DLC will cost 800 MP ($10) when it releases later this year on the Xbox 360.

Key Features:

Embark on 3 unique quests set in 3 unique dungeons.
Unravel the mystical secrets of the resurrection shrine.
Try on a whole new range of outfits and look like an armoured knight, an assassin, a barbarian or a leather-clap
biker, among many others.
Brandish 6 new weapons.
Dozens of unique potions that will drastically alter your appearance.
Customise your weapons the way you want with the new augment tool and a whole new array of augments.
+50 additional leaderboards.

Nintendo DSi Hits Half Million Mark
Posted by Sinden Lee - Tuesday, December 02, 2008 2:26 PM
It's been a great year so far for Nintendo.

Their DSi has sold a little over 500,000 units in Japan alone since its release in November 2008.

The entire DS platform has done equally impressive numbers outside of Japan, selling 27.63 million units in the U.S. and 32.99 million in other remaining territories worldwide since its release in 2004.

Nintendo says the DSi will probably come to the U.S. after April 2009.

LucasArts Becomes Deluxe Art Book

Since its birth 25 years ago, LucasArts has secured a place in video game history through storytelling and innovative technology.

Say what you will about its current works, but it's undeniable that their Star Wars and Battlefront II games generated not only legions of followers, but awe-inspiring fun.

So it stands to reason that their illustrious history should be captured by a compilation titled, Rogue Leaders: The Story of LucasArts.

Written by Rob Smith, it follows via "never before published interviews," and 300 pieces of "concept art, character development sketches, and storyboards".

And it's quite comprehensive too, with Monkey Island to Star Wars to LEGO games being covered in this publication by Chronicle Books.

Pic Of Gambit From "Wolverine" Prequel Emerges
Posted by Joseph Baxter - Monday, December 01, 2008 12:36 PM

Well, this Black Friday weekend was abuzz with not only shopping deaths, but this pic from Empire magazine of Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights) in his portrayal of Gambit from the upcoming X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Well, it's an enlightening pic, but it still gives no clues as to exactly how the character will be utilized. No word yet on what his role will be, whether he will even carry around his famous staff, and go around calling people "mona mi." Chalk this one up to "it is what it is."

'The Hobbit' To Begin Shooting in 2010
Posted by Joseph Baxter - Monday, December 01, 2008 12:04 PM
In a Q&A chat for DVD release of Hellboy II: The Golden Army , director Guillermo del Toro revealed that the long-anticipated film, The Hobbit would begin shooting in 2010 for about 370 days.

Now, those of us who may have graced the halls of Ivy-League schools may know that there are actually 365 days in a standard calendar year. So that means shooting will last for a little bit over a year. What does that mean? Well, seeing as we are still uncertain as to exactly when in 2010 shooting will begin, add a surely lengthy period of time for post-production, and we are prospectively looking at a wait until well into 2012 for this film.

That's one hell of a long time to wait, and I don't mean to be insensitive in saying this, but...Ian McKellen (and possibly Christopher Lee), PLEASE don't die until these films are complete.

Read A Book On Nintendo DS
Posted by Sinden Lee - Monday, December 01, 2008 11:51 AM
You can get your geek on double-time: as a gamer AND as a book worm!

In collaboration with publisher Harper Collins, Nintendo will release 100 Classic Book Collections (out of copyright) on December 26, 2008 for £17.99 in the UK.

The software will feature 100 classic plays and novels assembled on a single cart.

Users hold the DS like a book and flip the pages with the stylus. Features include a search and bookmark function, and additional reads will be available to download through Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

Full list of books included can be found at Amazon, from Shakespearan plays to Dickens novels. More classics like Austen, Bronte, Hardy and even Melville can be found.

Don't dismay if heavy tear busters aren't your thing. Other classics include lighter literary figures like Twain and Wilde.

Happy Birthday Mouse! You've Turned 40!!!
Posted by Raymond Padilla - Monday, December 01, 2008 11:47 AM
While many of you are passionately arguing about the Wii, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, let's take some time to pay respect to a device all of us have used and enjoyed: the mouse. The Telegraph has posted an article reflecting on the mouse, as it celebrates its 40th birthday.

"The computer mouse was the creation of Doug Engelbart and his team at the Stanford Research Institute in California, who needed a simple way of controlling their computers. The result was a carved wooden block mounted on wheels, with a long cable trailing out the back. One researcher nicknamed it a mouse, and the moniker stuck. 'We thought that when it had escaped out to the world it would have a more dignified name,' said Mr Engelbart. 'But it didn't.'"

The mouse is a brilliant input device that has enriched all our lives. The world of personal computers is much better and simpler thanks to its creation.

Out of curiousity, what kind of mouse do you use? For a long time, I was a fan of Logitech mice. Since I used to travel a lot, the VX Nano Cordless Mouse was my instrument of choice. Unfortunately, I lost it in Narita airport. The tragic loss coupled with a change of my travel schedule has caused me to go back to a longtime favorite -- the Kensington Trackball. So what's your pointing device of choice? Do you prefer ergonomically-designed ones like the Logitech VX? Do you enjoy precision gaming mice like Razer's offerings? Or do you just use the no-frills mouse that came with your Dell?

Midway Shares Selling For $100K
Posted by Sinden Lee - Monday, December 01, 2008 11:31 AM
Midway Games' majority stockholder, Sumner Redstone, will be selling the entire 87% of his controlling stake in what is already a financially marred company.

Mr. Redstone's holding company, National Amusements, which owns Midway, already suffers from a debilitating $1.6 billion debt.

Mark Thomas, a private investor, is getting a great deal at $100,000 or $0.0012 a share, which is significantly lower than $.38 a share, which was Midway's previous closing price.

Mr. Redstone and his family are majority owners of a bevy of media companies like CBS Corp., Viacom, MTV Networks and BET to name just a few.

Steve Guttenberg Returns To 'Police Academy'
Posted by Joseph Baxter - Monday, December 01, 2008 11:28 AM
In a recent interview, Steve Guttenberg has said that there is indeed a new Police Academy film in the works. According to "The Gute":

We are doing a new movie and it is going to be great fun. A script is being written and so far it is really great, everyone from the original movies who is still around will return.

Well, seeing as David Graf who played the gun-fanatic, Takleberry passed away in 2001, "everyone who is still around" will not include him. So sorry Police Academy Purists. (If there is such a thing.) However, the rest of the cast are surely not in a career position where it would be a "step down" to return. (Although "Captain Harris," G.W. Bailey is currently turning heads on The Closer.) Also, Guttenberg hinted of even getting Kim Cattral (who was in Police Academy 1) and Sharon Stone (who was in Police Academy 4) to reprise their roles.

As if Gute didn't drop enough retro bombs, he also hinted that he was talking with Ted Danson and Tom Selleck on possibly revisiting Three Men and a Baby. (With a NEW baby...we presume. Although how hilarious would it be if it was the same baby? She'd be all grown up, but was hypnotized into thinking she was still a baby. They'd have to change her and it would be all psuedo-erotic and everything. I'd see that.)

Anyway...the time does seem ripe for a return to the Academy. Seeing as the old stars are will be back, we will be spared from the revisionist "reboot" phenomenon. (Hear that, Police Academy Purists?) However, I would assume that this would be a "torch-passing" flick as the old gang do their best to legitimize a new bunch of misfit fuzz who will bring an entirely new generation a slew of bad super-glue pranks, and toilet humor to a world in desperate need of those things.

Nintendo's Wii And 'Wii Fit' Dominate Black Friday
Posted by Raymond Padilla - Monday, December 01, 2008 10:56 AM
Unsurprisingly, "Black Friday" was a tremendous retail success, but one video-game company did a lot better than the others. According to a report from CNet, "Retail sales for the day after Thanksgiving were up 3 percent from the same day in 2007, with preliminary estimates putting total sales in the U.S. at $10.6 billion, according to Shoppertrak RCT." The article claims that the Nintendo Wii and Wii Fit were enormous Internet successes on the mightiest of shopping days:

"The Wii game console was the most searched-for product on eBay, followed by the Wii Fit companion product. Consumers snatched up 3,171 Wiis over eBay, at an average selling price of $349, followed by the Wii Fit, with 1,059 sold at an average selling price of $140."

The report goes on to say that the Wii and Wii Fit were among the top-ten products on PriceGrabber.com, joining the likes of Ugg boots (Why are these things still fashionable?!?), the Acer Aspire One netbook, Sony's BDP-S350 Blu-Ray player, and Samsung's LN52A650 LCD television. Nintendo's two Wii wares (*snicker*) were the only video-game products on the top-ten list.

That's extremely impressive across the board. I have to say that I'm surprised that other video-game products, particularly relatively inexpensive handheld systems like the Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable, didn't make the list. Nintendo has to be thrilled with its Black Friday performance, especially as an indicator of its overall holiday performance. It looks like Mario's going to be kicking ass and taking names yet again this holiday season.

In addition to the wattling bird, you can also get the Chimera Sackboy (or Sackgirl) costumes from Resistance 2. These Chimeras will be available soon for $1.99 each.

Happy Birthday Xbox 360!!!
Posted by Raymond Padilla - Monday, November 24, 2008 7:00 AM
Microsoft's Xbox 360 turned three-years old this past Saturday. Congrats to the 360 and its proud parents at Microsoft! (No fond wishes are going out to its stupid and ugly cousin, the Zune.) Now that all three major consoles have celebrated their birthdays (in North America, at least), now's a good time to reflect on the 360's wonder years. So here are some questions for the Xbots out there.

What's been your most memorable Xbox 360 gaming experience so far?

What's been the most frustrating thing for you as an Xbox 360 gamer?

Wow the EA game sounds really great. I'm hoping to get a Wii Fit for Christmas if my husband can find one.

You know years ago 8 bit Nintendo made an exercise bike - in very limited production. I'm not even sure if it made it to the market at all. I'd like to see something like that come out for Wii.

Yeah this one does seem to be worth the money. I have to admit that I didnt believe the Julian Micheals one was worth buying and from what I am hearing not alot of people that so too. I still believe and I do not understand why no company has yet to do it but you should just have a something similar to DDR with the arrows and keys with the workout going on in the background. So you would have a trainer/video in the background playing while you match the movements and the game system registers them to see how close you are.

Lol that funny. I am sure they are not the cheapy bands. The whole set is 69.99 dollars So I would think that the bands will be quality ones since a Wii game is usually 49.99 and to sell it for 20 bucks more you would expect their to be 20bucks worth of equipment.

I was able to find a demo video of this game. I am not sure how muchbetter it will be from wii fit. I am still not that impressed by it. But we will see what other videos come up before its release. i am sure that with the resistance band being added it will give you mroe of a workout and with the numbchuck holder on your leg it will hopefully capture your movements correctly..

Just wanted to share with you these following news stories about the gaming world.
EA Making Own Wii Workout Game
Posted by Sinden Lee - Thursday, November 13, 2008 10:37 AM
Electronic Arts wants to motivate you to get into shape and feel great.

For $69.99, EA's Sports Active fitness pack includes two "specially-designed leg straps" which will hold the Wii Nuncuk and track your lower body movement, as well as a resistance band for the upper body.

It will also be compatible with Nintendo's Wii Balance Board, but will not require one to function.

EA's Sports Active package offers "a new level of motivation with on-screen, real-time feedback on your workout" and is marketed "specifically for women seeking a simple and cost-effective way to achieve a healthy lifestyle."

While it gives you the option to customize your own workout routine, you also can opt to utilize their daily 20-minute workouts or the 30 Day Challenge.

It will be released in Spring 2009 in collaboration with Bob Greene, Oprah Winfrey's personal trainer.

Although it's targeting women, fitness and good health should be universal--and everyone should be motivated to "break a sweat!"
