That would be bad to drink out of canteens in the sun. Yuck.

LOL A guy at work told me yesterday that "back in the day" at Football practice they thought water caused cramps and wouldn't let them drink ANY during practice. He said they all rushed the bathrooms afterwords and clogged up the sinks to dump their heads in and drink.

In bootcamp they had us guzzle canteens of water on command. It was hard to keep a straight face when they had us turn the canteens upside down over our head. There was always a knucklehead that dumped water on his head. lol But that water usually was HOT from soaking up the sun during marches and tasted like canteen. Yuck!

I actually prefer slightly cold water. I cant stand hot, cant guzzle cold. But I promise you, cause I've been there: when you are a runaway and haven't had water for over a day. YOU WILL DRINK ANY TYPE OF WATER!

That reminds me of the time.... lol just kidding. I think I'm the most guilty of this. I guess that means I'm double minded.

Back on topic...I have a nice tall container of water next to me. However, I don't drink as much of it now that I got rid of my plastic container and use a metal one. Mostly because I can't dump ice into it as easily. Nothing like a big serving of cold ice water!

I love how we moved from ice water to Bowflex to Sparkguy to Hulk Movie. 7 More degrees of separation to go!

LOL My wife just went to go see Hulk with a friend and sort of liked it. I REALLY liked it; the Hulk is one of my favorite comic book characters for a reason. I guess we can relate. :o)

You know what is funny, go read the profile on Mr. Spark (aka SparkGuy). That's right, the founder of this site is one of those people. OK, I've worked up to a jealous rage now...calm down Ryan...calm down.

I think all those ripped bodies on Bowflex commercials were born skinny. My best friend eats like a pig all the time. He never worries about calories and fat and he is the skinniest person i know.

That's awesome. I think MissW. posted something similar from her Bowflex manual. That's right...all those ripped bodies on the Bowflex commercials must have been drinking cold ice water. That's the true secret. lol

Woo hoo. I hate drinking water at room temperature. That is an awesome report.

Most beverages I drink are iced, including much of the coffee I drink, especially in summer. I don't tend to drink hot drinks during the warmer months. I guess I've been burning little calories and it is nice to know. Like all good things though, too much can be a bad thing!

Does drinking ice water burn more calories than drinking room-temp water?

It’s true that when you drink ice water, your body uses energy (calories) to raise the liquid’s temperature to body temperature. But not very much. Roger Clemens, DrPH (doctor of public health) in nutrition and biological chemistry, and associate director of regulatory science at the USC School of Pharmacy, walked us through the math. For the sake of simplicity, he didn’t take thermodynamics into account, which would change the numbers very slightly.

You have an 8-ounce glass of ice-cold water in front of you. That’s about 240 grams of water.

When you drink the ice water, which is roughly 4 degrees Celsius, your body will expend calories to bring it to body temperature, which is about 37.5 degrees Celsius; that’s a difference of 33.5 degrees. To raise 1 gram of water 1 degree Celsius, 1 calorie is expended. (This is a “little” calorie—what scientists use to measure small units of energy. The calories we refer to colloquially are actually 1,000 of these and are known as kilocalories in the science world.)

Raising 240 grams of water by 33.5 degrees Celsius will take 33.5 calories x 240 grams of water, which equals 8,040 little calories.

Dividing 8,040 by 1,000 gives us 8.04 food calories (kilocalories). Therefore, you’ll burn about 8 calories for each glass of iced calorie-free beverage you drink. That’s equal to about one Life Saver: not exactly a weight-loss miracle.

Using Clemens’s figures, it would take about 435 8-ounce glasses of ice water to lose a pound.

And do we have to tell you? Consuming large quantities of cold water can have serious health effects, such as an overall lowering of body temperature, a decrease in the functionality of the gastrointestinal tract, and, in extreme cases, anemia. Drinking a lot of water can also lead to water intoxication.

We must all suffer from one of two pains: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. The difference is discipline weighs ounces while regret weighs tons.
