From a scientific standpoint, when you get as many mixed results as there are with video game research. It seems that the only wise conclusion is:

Kids are kids and are gonna be what they are regardless of video games. And Oh yeah, why are we listening to him?

From Wiki:

At 16, before dropping out of Crespi Carmelite High School, Slash was given his first guitar by his grandmother. He spent hours each day practicing. Eventually, his entire focus was put on music and he made the decision to quit school. In a Rolling Stone Magazine article, he remarked:

"My big awakening happened when I was fourteen. I'd been trying to get into this older girl's pants for a while, and she finally let me come over to her house. We hung out, smoked some pot and listened to Aerosmith's Rocks. It hit me like a [censored] ton of bricks. I sat there listening to it over and over, and totally blew off this girl. I remember riding my bike back to my grandma's house knowing that my life had changed. Now I identified with something."

(Yeah. I hear pot can do that to ya.)

Slash: Games Make Kids Zombies!
Posted by Frank Meyer - Wednesday, May 28, 2008 11:30 AM
Guitar god Slash recently told Guitar World that he feels videogames turn kids into zombies!

(Noooooooo!!!!)

“[They] do promote this sort of lethargy in kids. They turn into gaming zombies,” he admitted. “So I understand the concern that people who play Guitar Hero would never pick up a real guitar. But I think it's the opposite effect."

(Oh...okay then...)

Yes, despite feeling that some games make kids lazy, he feels the game he's involved with, something called Guitar Hero, actually gets more kids to play actual guitars!

"It takes some work, and maybe it's not quite as exciting or instantly gratifying,” Slash ponticicated. “But what turned me on to guitar when I was kid was that all you have to do is play that one chord that hits you straight in the heart. And that's pretty simple to do. Plus, kids are being exposed to all this killer rock and roll that's programmed into the game that they would not otherwise hear.

360 Update To Feature Motion Control?
Posted by Stephen Johnson - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 1:53 PM
Want to hear a hot rumor: The Spring update to the Xbox 360 will include motion control and game install support.

This means the 360 will take on two of the most notable characteristics of its competitors (Waggling from the Wii and Disc Install from the PS3), and that means you won't have to buy another system, because the 360 will be a Wii and a PlayStation 3. Or something like that.

Take this with a boulder-sized grain of salt, of course. The rumor's source is murky.

Microsoft has said that "We don't comment on rumors or speculation, but what we can tell you is we've never seen this list before."

'Wii Fit' Already Sold Out At Amazon
Posted by Stephen Johnson - Tuesday, May 06, 2008 8:09 AM
Even though the "game" doesn't come out for a few weeks, Nintendo's Wii Fit is already sold out on Amazon.

There are a lot Soccer Moms who need to drop a few, right? Can I get a high-five for that one?

Anyway, Amazon is "actively seeking more of this product from suppliers." The exercises game with the weight-sensing board comes out on May 21st.

FFVII Re-Make Possible?
Posted by Brian Leahy - Friday, May 02, 2008 2:23 PM

You want a Final Fantasy VII re-make on the PS3. We know you do.

Well, there's a glimmer of hope in the eye of fans everywhere. FFVII director, Yoshinori Kitase, said this:

"My feelings are that if a remake were to work well then all the core members of the original team must be reassembled, all the artists and designers."

Hit the jump for the rest of his statement.

"The problem is that, although all of us have an idea of what a remake should be and how to do it, organising such a thing right now is logistically very difficult. All the different members are now involved in very new, very large projects like Final Fantasy XIII and those projects are going to take a while.

Maybe, when all those games are finished then we can look at doing something like that.

Of course, that said we came up with the idea for Crisis Core in just two days. It was a case of 'this is what we want to do, so let's do it'. So, you can definitely expect the probability of something spontaneous happening at some point, but it's hard to predict."

We want Final Fantasy XIII to release this century, but after that let's get the re-make going, please.

'GTA IV' Locking Systems?
Posted by Stephen Johnson - Tuesday, April 29, 2008 10:26 AM

All is not rosy in Grand Theft Auto land: Some gamers are reporting that the game is freezing up PS3 systems. It's anecdotal, of course, as these things always are.

The problem seems to be with some 60GB PS3s. It's not an across-the-board issue, apparently.

A Rockstar customer service person told Kotaku that the game is also locking up 360s. Rockstar is no doubt working on a fix.

Kotaku: Rockstar Support: No GTA Freeze Fix in Sight

PS3 Console Sales May Turn Profit in '08
Posted by Ty Colfax - Monday, April 21, 2008 11:44 AM
Some of the more astute gaming news fans out there would know the PS3 is currently sold at a loss. The technology that goes into making it so powerful wasn't cost-effective, until recently. Well, now that the the chips have gotten stronger, smaller, and cheaper, the PS3 will be a profit-making sale for Sony.

Consider how long and strong the PS2 has gone selling as many units as it has, and you can understand why the next-gen loss-leader investment was such a great deal for Sony.

Rumors of a slim PS3 are starting to resurface and this has some 360 fans considering their first PS3 purchase. But I have to ask this: Do people really make their console decisions based on how big the system is? Unless you're living in an RV, is space really that much of an issue? People will buy electronics for the stupidest reasons. Look, my laptop fits in my mouth!

Will E3 Bring New Nintendo DS?
Posted by Stephen Johnson - Friday, April 11, 2008 11:13 AM
The internet rumor mill is churning with speculation that this year's E3 will bring a new Nintendo DS. The source: The head of venerable Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu. Mind you, Hirokazu Hamamura doesn't have any insider info, he just thinks Nintendo's big announcement at E3 will be a re-designed DS.

Nintendo says "no comment."

We would like to add to the speculation by predicting not just a slight re-design, but a totally new platform. One that will beam videogame images directly into your mind. The new portable Nintendo will not technically be a "handheld" as you'll wear it over your eyes. You'll be completely immersed in an alternate reality when you turn it on.

Yes, ladies an gentleman, we predict that E3 will bring the Virtual Boy Lite.

GTA IV Multiplayer Rundown
Posted by Ty Colfax - Tuesday, April 08, 2008 2:36 PM

Rockstar has given open access to a few select press outlets in New York interested in being the first to play GTA IV. Many of our favorite gaming blogs have gone live with their coverage of the multiplayer modes and the general concensus among them is WOW.

GTA has never been one for the multiplayer modes. The PC version of San Andreas had a hack that allowed you to go co-op in gang battles and the like thanks to a third-party add-on, but this being the first next-gen console version of the franchise, multiplayer has never been readily available.

But waiting has apparently proven advantageous. Being able to see where other multi-player modes succeed and fail has meant the Rockstar cats have had time and data with which to refine this aspect of the game. Some reviewers are even calling it the better half of GTA IV which has classically relied on its sand-box and mission based campaign modes.

Here's what some of our East Coast pals had to say about their hands-on experience with the game:

kotaku.com says: "All but one of the multiplayer modes supports up to 16 players. (The co-op missions only support up to four.) The host has an amazing array of options that they can control. While setting up a game, the host can choose to modify the routine, like respawn times, weapon selections and friendly fire, or the unusual, like the time of day, the weather, how heavy the traffic is or how many people are on the street. You can even control police presence in your matches.
"While the game allows you to select parts of the map to play in, choosing specific boroughs, smaller neighborhoods, or areas like the airport, it doesn't prevent players from roaming the entire city during any given match. Instead the respawns and weapon drops only occur in those areas."

destructoid.com says: "Before starting our gameplay session, we were given the option to modify our avatars appearance. Options like gender, face, hair, and clothing are all available at the outset with limited selections. We were told that these selections would be added as a player’s rank up, between 0 and 10, which can be increased by picking up money across the game’s various multiplayer modes.
"…it looks like Rockstar are looking to deliver a reasonably fleshed out multiplayer experience that shouldn’t disappoint fans."

gamespot.com says: "While the Deathmatch modes were fun, the real attraction of GTA IV's multiplayer may well come from the many other modes that Rockstar has dreamed up. We wondered just how much of a role multiplayer would play in GTA IV, and after seeing it in action, we're pleased to report that it's far from being a simple afterthought to the game."

TheFeed says: "Dang, we jealous."

Looks like we're in for a hell of a treat with this whole GTA IV experience, ladies and germs. This is one blog that will be posting minimally on April 29 as we will have bought the game at midnight the night before and will be overdosing on nodoz and 17-hour energy powders instead of coming to work. This might happen all throughout May. You have been warned.

Ubisoft Abandoning Hard-Core Shooters
Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Tuesday, March 18, 2008 2:58 PM

Ubisoft will likely not foray into the hardcore shooter market again, preferring to leave it with heads held high, on the heels of Rainbow Six Vegas 2. Ubisoft developer Phil Therien says, as a matter of fact, that the hardcore shooter market is too narrow, and won't be in the business model of the company any longer.

Now, they didn't rule out the idea of making hybrid-style games, which combine shooters with other game features, but it appears that the time of the Ghost Recon-style tactical shooter is no more.

GHIII Dropkicks St. Patrick's Day

Drink up, folks!

Activision has released the much-talked-about (by us, at least) free Guitar Hero III track pack of three Dropkick Murphys songs. The pack consists of master tracks of "Famous for Nothing," "Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ya," and "Flannigan's Ball."

And just in time to get drunk and rock out on St. Patrick's Day!

Nintendo Wins Emmy
Posted by sjohnson - Tuesday, January 08, 2008 8:09 AM

For the second year in a row, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has honored Nintendo with an Emmy Award for excellence in engineering creativity. Why? Because the DS and the Wii are so nicely engineered.

"The pioneering interfaces for Wii and Nintendo DS reflect our long tradition of seeking new ways to enhance the gaming experience for users at every level," said Don James, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of operations. "We're grateful for this award and thank the academy for honoring us a second time.

Last year, Nintendo won the Emmy for having invented the plus-shaped D-Pad we'e all come to know and love.

The presentation of the Technological & Engineering Emmy Awards last night at CES was not affected by the Hollywood writers strike, as Yoshi writes all his own jokes.

UPDATE: The above (lame) joke is actually not true! According to Next Generation: "Peter Price, President and CEO of NATAS said that due to litigation with Hollywood's Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, the Tech Emmy winners would be unable to receive statuettes at the current time. But he stated, '...Once victorious, we plan to present each winner from tonight's event with their own Emmy.'"

'Tamagotchi Connection: Corner Shop 3' Launches This Summer
Posted by jrmylmb - Monday, January 07, 2008 2:09 PM
The DS gets even more cute with the upcoming release of the latest Tamagotchi sequel. Well, it was fun to make fun of the people who had the original pocket pet in the 90s while jamming to Pearl Jam’s "Jeremy" on my Walkman, but can a new DS version deliver with more stuff?

And there is more stuff. All new stores for you to manage, the ability to build your own park, more playable characters, and use of Nintendo Wi-Fi so you can trade journals about the business day with buddies.

Might be a good Summer present for your niece to follow-up on the awesomeness that was your DS gift to her over the holidays. Or, if you’re cheap like me, you might never need think of this again.

CES 2008: Bill Gates Keynote
Posted by bleahy - Sunday, January 06, 2008 2:58 PM

Keep your eyes glued to this exciting blog post as it will be updated with the meat and pataters of Bill Gates' Keynote Address as it happens in a few hours (9:30 EST/6:30 PST).

What do you think his big announcement will be? The rumored Ultimate Xbox 360? Consumer availability of Microsoft Surface? Vista 2? He's building a rocket to go to and conquer the moon?

Stay tuned. If you guess exactly what he announces before he does, you will be right.

Update: Been sitting in line for about 2 hours now. We're fighting for use of wall outlets. I had to suckerpunch someone from CNN just to charge my laptop.

8:22 EST: Inside the Room Now -- still about an hour to wait, but they are playing Daft Punk so that's A-OK in our books. We're about 30 rows back because we waited in line like suckers. Also, our iPhones have run out of batteries. Lame.

8:32 EST: Wi-Fi Woes -- The quality of the The Sands Expo wi-fi network from the Palazzo Ballrom in the Venetian is pretty weak. We hope we don't lose signal during the keynote. A guy is falling asleep next to and on to bleahy. It's kind of weird.

8:45 EST: Still Waiting -- People are still filing into the ballroom and the music has gotten considerably worse. We're thirsty and hungry. This is the battleground that internet journalists face at CES. While I was typing this Daft Punk came back on so we're okay now. Don't fear for us. It's even from the new Alive 2007 live album. If only Bill would come out and dance!

9:00 EST: Half Hour to Go -- It's amazing. The room is still filling up. Duke Nukem Forever might even get released while we wait for this to get going. Here's to hoping it starts on time. Pro Tip: It won't.

Our quick keynote impressions after the cut:

The sales and landmarks:

Xbox Live Hits 10 million users -- maybe this explains the lag?
17.7 million Xbox 360s shipped worldwide.
In terms of total business done (hardware/software), MS edges out Nintendo by $1 billlion and Sony by $2 billion.
Windows Live hits 420 (lol) million users.
Windows Mobile gained 10 million new users in 2007.
The announcements:

ABC and Disney will be bringing their TV shows (woot! Lost!) to Xbox Live Marketplace.
MGM will be bringing their movie library to Xbox Live Marketplace.
Samsung and HP will both develop Media Center Extenders. HP will release the first HDTV that functions as the extender.
Mediaroom will get "DVR Anywhere", which can stream recorded TV to other devices on the home network.
British Telecom will begin selling Xbox 360s that will run Mediaroom (UK only sorry).
The Zune will go on sale in Canada in the Spring.
Bill's Last Day At Microsoft -- Say what you want but this sketch was hilarious.
Windows Live Integration -- Some interesting integration ideas to bring everything together, but we don't imagine it will hit the market share they want. It might only get used as embeddable objects on social sites like Facebook and MySpace.
The Three Things Bill Thinks Will Shape This Next Digital Age:
High-Definition Experiences Everywhere
Service Connected Devices
Power of Natural User Interfaces
Bill mentions the success of Windows touchscreen tablets and the iPhone. He mentions Surface... no mention of the Wii. Biased much, Bill?
Microsoft Surface -- It's still a really cool concept, but the demo that Bill showed was nothing new. It also looking pretty choppy and it didn't seem as natural as other touch based UIs (*cough* iPhone *cough*).
Total Lack of Xbox 360 News -- Sucks! They better make up for it at GDC. We want Gears of War 2, dammit. No Ultimate 360, no IPTV, no DVR, no HD-DVD... nothing.
Ford Sync -- It's cool and all, but talking to your car will never be as cool as Knight Rider. We're gonna hold off on this one for now.
SayAndSee -- A cell concept feature that will take voice commands and allow for things like finding movie theaters, purchasing tickets, and notifying friends all with voice commands. Again, talking to your electronics isn't cool, but it is easier than typing.
Visual Recognition Concept -- Bill showed off some nice future-tech that they want to eventually put into cellphones that uses a camera to recognize surroundings and display information based on what it sees. This could include directions to the landmark, appointments and notes linked to the place, or even people.
Bill Plays Guitar Hero III -- Bill was gonna play GHIII, but brought out Slash to play for him. That was awesome until the show ended aburptly and there was no Steve Jobs-esque "one more thing".
All in all, it was cool to see Bill's last keynote, but there were no bombs dropped. It was funny, though, so I guess that counts. They clearly had writer's working for them. Maybe some striking writers got an easy paycheck.

That closes out tonight for G4tv.com at CES 2008, but check back tomorrow when the show floor officially opens. We're going to gamble now.

No 'Rock Band' For Wii Planned
Posted by mdalonzo - Wednesday, January 02, 2008 12:55 PM

Though Harmonix is committed to bringing Rock Band to 'every important platform' at some time, there are no plans to bring the game to the Wii at this time, according to EA. Now, this doesn't mean that the game isn't coming to the Wii eventually, it just means that they're not ready to announce plans for the Nintendo version right now.

However, we'd be willing to bet that you will see a Wii version of this extremely popular game before the end of 2008, perhaps lining up with next year's holiday season, because, you know, game developers are good like that. In the meantime, Wii lovers, find a friend who has a PS3, 360, or PS2, and play the game.

GamePro.com: Rock Band Wii? EA says "no" (for now)

'Bubble Bobble,' More On Wii VC
Posted by mdalonzo - Monday, December 31, 2007 10:36 AM

Another week, another update to the Nintendo Virtual Console list. This week sees some old friends, namely Bob and Bub, the two bubble dragons from 1986, making a reappearance in Bubble Bobble, an oldie that's been gone a while, but is back with a vengeance in today's update.

Also appearing today are Light Crusader and Top Hunter, meaning that Nintendo has, once again, provided us with a heaping helping of a reminder that gaming has been awesome for a long, long time. Do yourself a favor and spend your Wii Points. Check them out.

It's Still Christmas For Gamers!
Posted by EMorton - Thursday, December 27, 2007 9:51 AM
We know that you, readers of TheFeed, are the most generous and giving people on earth, so much so that you’ve probably spent most of your money on presents for other people this holiday season (and only gotten lame gifts like sweaters and underwear back in return- mothers will never learn).

Isn’t it time you treated yourself to something nice? Don’t worry that your credit cards are maxed out and you’re close to over-drafting, 1P Start has compiled a list of the best post-Christmas gaming deals on the net. So, if you still want to enjoy what little time you have left before you have to go back to work on January 2nd, take a gander.

1P Start: After Christmas Deals Arrive!

China Not Suffering Through Wii Shortage
Posted by EMorton - Wednesday, December 26, 2007 9:25 AM
If you’re a mom who has been hearing her kid whine for months about getting a Wii, the following news may be very upsetting. While Americans are suffering through a Wii shortage, China has been inundated with more Wiis than they can handle.

Mario’s wonder console retails for about $300 US over there and contrary to the situation within our borders, in Beijing, China you can just walk in to almost any game shop and buy a Wii that is completely region free. Damn, we envy the Chinese!

Adult Movies Come To Blu-Ray
Posted by sjohnson - Thursday, December 20, 2007 1:26 PM
Not that we would know firsthand or anything, but adult movie have been available on HD-DVD since, basically, the launch of the format. Blu-Ray has had a more spotty history with the blue movie industry. But it looks like that's going to change.

Adult film-makers Digital Playground has plans to release Pirates, arguably the most well-kinown adult movie of recent years, on Blu-Ray to join the already-released HD-DVD version.

iPhone Attacking Japan
Posted by frankmeyer - Wednesday, December 19, 2007 1:25 PM

Unconfirmed reports say Apple is holding talks with Japanese mobile carriers as it readies for the launch of the iPhone in Japan in 2008.

It appears that major Japanese telecoms NTT DoCoMo and SoftBank Mobile are seeking exclusive domestic marketing rights for the iPhone. But negotiations with Apple are said to be encountering difficulties because of the computer giant’s demand that it control the subscriber base through its iTunes Music Store in addition to getting a cut of subscription revenue from iPhone users.

The reports also hints that Apple could start doing non-exclusive deals with one or more Japanese carriers.

Gamestop's Wii Voucher Program Detailed
Posted by bleahy - Tuesday, December 18, 2007 10:18 AM

Looks like those of you who want a Wii might be in luck (in January). If you don't mind getting a voucher and holding onto it, you will be able to get not guaranteed system through Gamestop.

This Friday, December 21st ONLY, you will need to go to a Gamestop, drop the full cost of a Wii on them, and you will receive a voucher. This is while "supplies" last.

They will guarantee you a Wii by January 25, 2008 from the Gamestop that sold you the voucher.

If you wanted to get this Wii for a child, remember, nothing says, "I love you" like an I-O-U under the tree.

Santas Under Attack '07 Live!
Posted by mbretz - Tuesday, December 18, 2007 5:08 PM

What would a Yule be without stories of everyone’s favorite jolly old Christmas mascot suffering an onslaught of verbal, physical and sexual assaults? Well, a joyous time of peace and love to all mankind, really. But since that’s not the case, TheFeed presents this very special holiday report: Santas Under Attack ’07 Live!

City of OMG!!! – In Rio de Janeiro, an actor dressed as Santa Claus almost didn’t make his scheduled appearance at a Christmas party to deliver presents to children when the helicopter he was traveling in came under fire from local drug gangs. It’s believed that the Grinch-ish Li’l Ze’s and Knockout Neds assumed that the chopper was a police vehicle and opened fire.

Peter Jackson To Produce 'The Hobbit'
Posted by mdalonzo - Tuesday, December 18, 2007 9:09 AM

Peter Jackson and New Line have settled their dispute over The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and Jackson must be satisfied, because he and partner Fran Walsh are going to produce two films based on J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, which will be co-financed and distributed by MGM and New Line, with New Line distributing in the U.S., and MGM getting the international distribution rights.

According to the press release, "The two “Hobbit” films – “The Hobbit” and its sequel – are scheduled to be shot simultaneously, with pre-production beginning as soon as possible. Principal photography is tentatively set for a 2009 start, with the intention of “The Hobbit” release slated for 2010 and its sequel the following year, in 2011."

No word on a director or stars, but we'd say this is great news.

Nintendo Shooting Itself In Foot
Posted by mdalonzo - Saturday, December 15, 2007 8:00 AM
According to financial experts, Nintendo is not doing themselves any favors by not having enough Wii consoles to satisfy a surging Holiday market. As a matter of fact, based on sales figures from November, Nintendo is losing out on roughly $1.3 billion as a result of the shortage.

Even more interesting is that the demand for the Wii console hasn't diminished over the year since its release. There have been shortages all along, and there are still more people wanting to buy it. Serious gamers might argue, but it's clear that the casual gaming fan prefers Nintendo these days.

Activision Halts PS3 'Rock Band' Patch
Posted by sjohnson - Wednesday, December 12, 2007 1:39 PM

PlayStation 3 owners, we have some bad news for you. The hoped-for patch to make Guitar Hero 3 guitars compatible with Rock Band has been put on hold, maybe forever. The culprit appears to be Activision, publishers of Guitar Hero 3.

According to a statement from Harmonix and MTV Games, makers of Rock Band:

The compatibility patch was submitted, approved and had been scheduled for release by Sony on Tuesday, December 4. Unfortunately, Activision objected to the release of the compatibility patch. The patch remains with Sony, but we have been told that it will unfortunately not be released due to Activision's continued objection.

Click the "Read More" for the official statement, in its entirety.

iPhone To Be Hacked Most?
Posted by sjohnson - Tuesday, December 11, 2007 2:20 PM
According to a report by Arbor’s Security and Engineering Response Team (ASERT), the Apple iPhone will be the most hacked piece of technology in the coming year.

“With the scrutiny the iPhone has received since its launch earlier this year over network lock-in, ASERT believes that hackers will be enticed by the possibility of attacking Apple users and the opportunity to ‘be the first’ to hack a new platform,” the report said.

The attacks will probably be malware embedded into seemingly harmless information, images or other media that perform dangerous actions when rendered on the iPhone’s Web browser, and drive by shootings.

The only solution for iPhone users is to buy a big dog, dig a trench and sit in the dark drinking and holding a shotgun, waiting for hackers.

Also: Do not taunt iPhone!

'Time' Magazine Names 'Halo 3' GOTY
Posted by sjohnson - Monday, December 10, 2007 2:41 PM

The holiday season: is here, giving us all time to reflect on the year that's gone by and make a top ten list!

According to Time Magazine's top ten list, the game of the year is Halo 3. Not too surprising... Halo 3 is followd by The Orange Box...which is not surprising...and then comes to the totally unsurprising Rock Band.

This year of mind-blowing videogames has spoiled everyone, even Time Magazine... in what other year in gaming history would Bioshock comes in number 5, and God of War 2 at number 10?

Check out the whole list yourself at Time Magazine's official site... and while you're there, check out who won top ten gadgets. Hint: It's the iPhone.

Dreamcast 2 In The Works?
Posted by sjohnson - Thursday, December 06, 2007 7:54 AM
We loved the Dreamcast as much as anyone, but we seriously doubt we'll ever see a next-gen version. The market is crowded enough as it is. Still, the rumor on the nets is a Dreamcast 2 might be coming. A trademark application on the name "Dreamcast" was filed by SEGA in August, and since then the rumors have been percolating.

The application reads:

"Home video game machines; player-operated electronic controllers for electronic video game machines; video game interactive controller, namely, hand held pads, and floor pads or mats; joysticks for video games; computer cursor control devices, namely, computer mouse; flash memory cards; video game software, computer game programs".

Yeah, sure, SEGA is almost certainly just keeping their ownership of the "Dreamcast" name, but some think the addition of flash memory cards, floor pads and other info not included in the original trademark filing point to a new console.

We're gonna say "very, very doubtful." But we've been wrong before, and speculation is free and fun.

It is a good thing that the xbox 360 now comes with parental control. Something needed to be done about kids playing these rated M games or downloading movies and clips not appropriate to them.

This is outside our usual wheelhouse of videogames, technology and super-hero movies, but it's such an interesting story, we have to share it with you.

There is a rumor that documentary film-maker Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me) has actually found Osama Bin Laden.

Here's the (admittedly scant) evidence: In the director's latest documentary, Where In The World Is Osama Bin Laden, Spurlock travels the Middle East in search of public enemy number one. At a recent industry screening, reportedly, studio heads and other big-time Hollywood types signed iron clad "We won't tell anyone!" agreements. The Weinstein Co bought the movie after watching only 15 minutes of footage.

So far, everyone has been very, very quiet about Spurlock's film... except the film’s director of photography, Daniel Marricone, who told the press that Spurlock “definitely got the holy grail.”

Weird...eh?

We'll know what Holy Grail Marricone is talking about at this year's Sundance film festival in January.

Xbox Update Offers Goodies
Posted by sjohnson - Tuesday, December 04, 2007 11:01 AM

The fall Xbox 360 dashboard update is live right now. Have you downloaded it yet?

Here's what you can expect when you get home from work:

DivX / XviD support: This is a big one, and about time that these video formats get a little 360 love.
Friend List changes: Personally, I hate this one. I don't want YOU to be able to see MY friends... but a lot of people disagree and like it. It's opt-out-able. I will be opting out. I'm a very private person.
Parental Time: This timer allows you to set weekly, daily or monthly limits on Xbox time, and it's easy enough for a parent to use.
Xbox News Live: And in your face.
Overall, though, other than the DIVX support, I'm not super impressed. Not that there's anything wrong with these features, just that they're not the features aimed at me. I'm not a big "Profiles" guy. I don't "research" people I play with so I can read their lame mottoes and see what bands they like. But maybe you disagree... let us know below.

'Smash Bros. Brawl' Friend Code Woes
Posted by bleahy - Monday, December 03, 2007 3:50 PM

Today is a sad day in Smash Bros. history. It has been revealed that Brawl will in fact use friend codes that will be unique to the game.

Just like other Wii games, it will be a terrible chore to populate a friends list with people you know and IMPOSSIBLE to add random people you play.

As previously revealed, you will not be able to talk with strangers and no records will be saved in public play. You won't even get their names or friend codes.

'Guitar Hero 4,' 'COD 5,' Others Revealed
Posted by sjohnson - Monday, December 03, 2007 8:16 AM
The fact-sheet that revealed the details of the merger between Activision and Vivendi also contains some info about upcoming projects. Here's what's on the slate:

Guitar Hero IV
Call of Duty 5
"James Bond"
New Tony Hawk title
New Dreamworks titles
New Marvel titles
"Bizzare" A racing game.
There are no other details about any of these games.

The news of GH 4, COD 5 Tony Hawk being in development (or planned, anyway) is cool, but expected, so we're most excited about the possiblity of a killer James Bond game. It's been a lot of years since Golden Eye.

Anyway, delve into the corporate details yourself, right here.

POSTED FROM A BUNKER BELOW G4 STUDIOS

Samuel L. Jackson has just signed on to host the 5th Annual Video Game Awards which will air on Spike December 9th. In addition to Mace Windu’s hosting magic, you’ll also be able to catch game footage and trailers from Borderlands, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2, and TNA iMPACT. You’ll also get a first look at the new DLC Halo 3 Maps.

Some of the folks performing and presenting awards are Patton Oswalt, Tony Hawk, Dave Navarro, Matt Leinart, some UFC dudes, some wrestler dudes, Don King, and Tia Carrere. And that’s just the tip of the very strange iceberg.

So the trailers and stuff ain’t much, but it could turn out aiight.

On another note, robots have apparently tried to take control of TheFeed, but I managed to escape to this bunker after a long trip to the restroom. I may be the only one who made it out alive. Stand by.

Video Games Cause Violence Blah-Blah-Blah
Posted by bleahy - Friday, November 30, 2007 11:16 AM
Much like egg whites are good for you again, videogames are once again bad for children. In a new study looking at over 50 years of data, two knuckleheads find that violent games and TV are the second worst thing in the world. Ever.

They claim that the only thing more harmful to health are cigarettes.

"Exposure to violent electronic media has a larger effect than all but one other well known threat to public health. The only effect slightly larger than the effect of media violence on aggression is that of cigarette smoking on lung cancer," they found.

There you have it... videogames are more harmful than fast food, sugary sodas, drugs, rap music, nuclear proliferation, witchcraft, Michael Vick, aliens, bullets, and most importantly... ROBOTS.

There is no denying that robots are the single most harmful thing to the future health of our species. Do your part and say "no" to robots!

I have to admit, those young voices are hard to listen to, even though they are 10x better than I am. Last night I had a 13 or so year old on my team. They got 20 kills, I got 3. We won, but it was pretty embarrassing looking at those numbers.

Yeah I know what you mean about the mic's. Like me and you try to discuss stradegy when playing halo 3. I do hear trash talking but when I hear it I usually say you girls stop talking trash. Then you get the usually hey I am not a girl since they are 13 year old boys and say opps sorry I did not realize your balls haven't dropped. Thats the extent of my trash talk. Hope I didn't offend anyone.

I like using the mic. It is especially helpful when you are playing team games. You can ask where the enemy is or agree on strategy. If I don't know about something, I can also ask the people who are more experienced than I am.

As for trash talk, I don't do it and I don't really hear it too often. Maybe innocent things here or there. One guy got real bad, but you have the option to mute individual players during the game. After the game, I sent a bad profile of him. I think MS is doing a lot to keep things under control these days.

Fox News Warns Of Halo Trash Talk
Posted by sjohnson - Friday, November 30, 2007 8:42 AM
Fox News wants to warn parents that many people on Xbox Live make racist, sexist and profane statements.

Check out the video here.

We realize this isn't news to anyone who has actually played an online game, and the alarmist "Won't someone think of the children!?!" tone is pretty funny, but the trash-talk issue seems to be coming up a lot lately, whether it's the homophobia of this youtube video we saw on gaygamer.net, or a Fox news report.

Personally, I never use my headset when I play anything on Xbox publicly--I don't like people already, and I can't be bothered to speak to the mouth-breathers playing Halo 3 in the middle of the night--but what about you? Do you trash-talk? Is the racist/sexist talk on Live just innocent fun, or is it indicative of the impossibly ugly underbelly of our polite society? Any tips on what can be done?

PlayStation 3 Hacker's Paradise
Posted by bleahy - Thursday, November 29, 2007 10:49 AM
New Zealand security researcher Nick Breese thinks the PS3 is just about the best thing ever when it comes to cracking passwords.

Turns out that fancy Cell processor is really good at brute force password cracking.

He points out that most passwords are still safe because they have additional security measures, but for things like .zip and .pdf files... man a PS3 could crack that thing in like a few days.

"It'll speed up the attacks but I can't see that it's broken," Nick said. "(It) is still safe because the people implementing the ciphers foresaw CPU power rapidly increasing."

So there you have it. The PS3 is the device of choice for cracking .zip files. Everyone go rush out and buy one.

Yeah, I contributed to some of those downloads. They have a good service and it is nice they are including some titles we previously never had (like Super Mario 2 and that Japanese rail shooter - forget the name of it now).

Wii Enjoys Healthy Download Numbers, Is Confused
Posted by jrmylmb - Thursday, November 29, 2007 2:19 PM
Nintendo’s marketing guy Shinji Hatano announced recently that Virtual Console revenue has been approximately $33 million since the launch last year. But in a stunning and hilarious bout of honesty, the same marketing guy said that he is “currently unsure if this is a lot or low.”

Boy, you have to pretty delusionally wealthy to not know if this is a lot of money. I realize there are costs associated but anything that makes $33 million dollars in a year that isn’t a James Cameron film should be considered a success.

Anyway, the system has also seen 7.8 million downloads of classic Nintendo games. But they probably see this as an overwhelming failure since it doesn’t have the word “billion” in it.

That's just silly about the lawsuit. I had to send in my box because of the red ring issue AND send in my Halo disk because it was scratched. But, you know what? They fixed both for free and paid for the shipping on the box. Can't beat that. Besides, Halo doesn't have nearly the freezing issues a lot of other games have.

'Metal Gear Solid 4:' The Last Exclusive?
Posted by sjohnson - Thursday, November 29, 2007 7:48 AM
An intriguing article from Reuters foresees a day when third-party exclusive game titles no longer exist.

"Metal Gear Solid 4 is not only one of the most eagerly awaited games for Sony's PlayStation 3, it is also among the last of a dying breed -- games designed exclusively for one gaming console."

Blame the huge rise in game production costs: As it gets more expensive to create games, the importance of selling them on every system imaginable grows. So look for more across-everything releases, which means more crappy ports for low-end systems are likely.

What do you think? Are the days of the third party exclusive totally dead? Do individual games even sell systems anymore?

Microsoft Sued Again over 'Halo 3'
Posted by bleahy - Thursday, November 29, 2007 10:24 AM
That copy of Halo 3 you're playing... it's faulty. According to Randy Nunez, a San Diego resident, Halo 3 "consistently causes the Xbox 360 to crash, freeze, or lock up while the game is being played."

This is interesting because this is the first we've heard of rampant crashes that Halo 3 is causing.

Sounds like this guy just has a broken Xbox 360, which is WAY MORE likely.

This is a common occurrence when a product is extremely successful. Some joker comes along and tries to sue for $100 million over nothing.

Move along, Randy.
