Love the YMCA it is simple, family oriented and the people are kind, generous and happy! What more can you want! I've been going to the "Y" since I was a child and brought all my kids there from baby swimming with mommy to Dance Team and basketball at lunch as college kids! emoticon emoticon

Trying to find suggestions for a good YMCA workout mix. What is your typical workout like at the Y?

Ready for a new year. Today will be my second day at the Y, I am so excited. I think I will experiment in the wellness room again. I want to join a group exercise but I think i will wait until my Smart Start session next Tuesday.

I just tried my EA Sports Active2, for Wii, for the first time.

The learning curve is a bit above my level, however, after a few routines I should adjust.

I like that it maintains a constant reading of my heart rate (for me very important), it show my pulse on the TV screen while working out, and it stores the pulse history in the data file.

Some of the movements are odd. I am trying to learn how to limit the exercise stations, based on my flexibility.

So now I'm partially hook up for Winters Indoor Workouts At Home.

The kid's old bedrooms rebuilt as an exercise room.

Two Aerobic machines. An Airdyne bike and a NewStep recumbent stair-stepper.

I'm waiting for a shipmate of Bowflex adjustable dumbbells. And a floor covering that has 3/4 inch of foam.

A bank of w/O DVD's & CD's.

My Wii setup with:
Wii Sports Resort
Wii Fit (at present I can't use the balance board)
Biggest Loser for Wii
EA Sports Active1, 2, and Trainer
Your Shape with Jenny McCarthy

All of the video's project on the far wall by a CHEAP CVS Projection TV Device. It is supposed to be able to carry your TV signal, but I haven't even looked into how to do that yet. For now I sit in the LR watching BL with my cheap-o foot peddler. Maybe by the Spring BL Family's season.

Most important are my guys at my regional "Y" branches and you guys a SparkPeople. You keep me motivated and honest.

Oh yeah, I "reappropriated" my son's high school Apple Desktop. This is my first transmission from it. He's an adult now. HE AIN'T GETTIN' IT BACK.

We had a Wave machine, but not anything like your talking about.

Our Wave was a part of one of our pools. It was a machine to produce a surf in the intermediate pool.

Kids loved it until we had a drowning. emoticon

Does anyone have a Wave machine at their Y? Im a little lost using it. It is a cardio machine but it seems to rack up the km's really quickly.

Coach Approach sounds really great, wish we had that. As for Zumba...that's lots of fun even if you don't know the steps. I had a good laugh at myself trying to keep up with the ladies that were a good deal older than me but had all the moves down. The teacher was so energetic. I definitely will try again!

Another class I really like at the Y is Athletic Water Running. It's only offered on Friday, but I always try to make it because no matter how sore my muscles are from a week of cardio challenge or other weights, they are soothed after the class.

We don't have Coach Approach here, it sounds awesome. I'd love to see that implemented here and plan to check into it.Thanks for the info. Our Y is very old and we don't even have Fitlinxx, though the others in our district do.
Anyway, thanks again for the info. Patty

Hi Patty,

Coach approach is a program where a member meets with a coach to discuss your feelings, goals, food and exercise plan and how you feel (tired, etc.) The member usually starts out slow (doing bike and treadmill for x amount of minutes and some weight machines 2 or 3 times a week). The member meets with their coach every two weeks to assess their progress, diet and exercise plan. If the member did well or had problems the program is changed. New exercises may be added or some machines discontinued if the member encountered problems (knee injuries, surgery, etc. like me). The coach also makes suggestions about diet and exercise to help you meet your goal to lose weight, build muscle, etc. Exercise is logged into the Y FitLinxx machine so the coach can see how you are doing, sent you emails, fitness reports, etc. I bring my Spark food log to my coach for him to review. He noticed that I was eating too little or skipping meals, etc and recommended eating 3 meals and 2 snacks daily.

I started with doing two machines 2-3 times weekly before adding waterize and other classes. Now I do aerobics 6 times a week and weights 4 times. The program is free to all members of my Y.

We don'thave anything called coach approach. I'd like to hear more. Rowing is really fun and I am taking it on Weds and Fridays. I'm hoping to try other classes as well. I think classes might be a better fit for me than continuing to work out alone.

Hi Patty,

Does the Y you belong to have coach approach? I suggest you try this. Coach approach was life saving for me. My coach looks over my spark food log and exercise and makes suggestions.

I love Zumba. No rowing class at my Y.

Butterfly,

I have not lost weight or felt better on any diet I tried in the past. After noticing my glucose rose to pre diabetic I researched and started following the insulin resistance diet by Cheryle Hart MD. The diet is easy. I lost two pounds in the first week on the diet. continue losing and shredding belly fat.

Hi Everyone,
I work at the Y in Hamilton Oh. I work at the front desk but want to become certified and go back to school for nutrition. Right now my main focus is getting back into shape. I have joined many other fitness centers but keep coming back to the Y. I esp. like mine, we have so many regulars and we all know one another.
I only work there part time on the week ends but I work out six days a week. I don't have a problem with exercising, but I sure do with eating. I vcan't stop and I know I don't eat because I'm hungry.
We have zumba classes and we now have a new rowing class that is catching on like wild fire. I'm on a waiting list to try it, but everyone I talk to has had nothing but positive feed back for it. Anyone else have it or have tried it? Patty

zumba, zumba, zumba! Go for it! The YMCA is for people who want to move, that's you! The instructors are wonderful and they don't put up with put downs! Zumba away!
I was at the YMCA today and I got in the pool! Last year I was avoiding it because of my weight but guess what it felt great! You can do this! emoticon emoticon emoticon

I am over 200 lbs and do Zumba twice a week. There are all types of figures in my class. Try it if you like to dance and have fun. Go to the back of the room if you feel uncomfortable about your size. No one really cares what a person looks like, if they do the steps correctly, etc. We refer to our class as girl just wanting to have fun.

Besides being a personal trainer I am a general fitness trainer and set members up on a plan we call Safe Start - a strength program over a 12 week period using the CYBEX machines. I also teach Silver Sneakers MSROM and Arthritis in Water and soon will be teaching Kettlebells.

I love my job so much. I can't say we are better than other gyms as each place depends on its management but I've never worked somewhere better than the one I work at now. I love the members.

The other morning a member asked me to join them in a game of pickleball which is set up like a tennis court and played w/ a wiffle ball and wooden paddles. Awesome!

For the lady who wants to try Zumba - go for it. It doesn't matter your size - believe me I've seen all ages, all sizes, and all talents (or lack of rythem) and not once have I ever heard someone come out and not enjoy it.

Whether you think you CAN or think you CAN'T - You are correct!

I am so thrilled to be part of this team. I work at the YMCA in Red Wing, MN and I also worked at the one in River Falls, WI and years ago at one in Phx. AZ.

I am a personal trainer - I have a 4 yr. degree plus a national cert. through NASM. The Y used to cert. people for personal trainer but they've moved away from it in these parts because they want to be competitive w/ the other major gyms who require a national cert. They do not require a degree to be a trainer but in many instances they require the degree for a supervisory position.

Whether you think you CAN or think you CAN'T - You are correct!

I know what you all mean about being a regular. I even wrote a little about that in a recent blog. One thing that helps me stay consistent at my Y is the classes. I've found some great, FUN classes that I enjoy. And as long as the schedule stays reasonably the same (our schedule has changed so much over the past 3 months it's hard to keep track), I'll keep going to the classes. My favorite is Zumba, and on Friday mornings, the Zumba instructor follows his Zumba class with a core conditioning class that isn't like exercise at all. We do everything standing up...no traditional crunches, planks, etc. I really feel it!

According to biblical history, A man journeys into the desert, for 40 days and survives the temptations of the "flesh" because He knew He'd overpower and conquer the Temptor,
How about if we, in this journey to a better us..

take on the power of that man and let's kick our own demon's butts and take back control of our nutritional lives and gain a healthier lifestyle!

I have my wife going along with me. She's going in for the aqua-arobics, and I'm going for everything else. We're pretty much going to have to push each other. She's got over 100 pounds to lose, and I'm pretty much her personal trainer when she's not in the pool.
You are right. When other people get to know you and you become a "fixture" in the place, it does make it a lot more fun. And when people start to notice when you lose a few pounds and they compliment, that is when the enthusiasm comes to play.

Don't knock yourself, Tim. Just get back out to the Y and get going again!
One thing I have found going long enough at the Y and at the same time. The regular people you see everyday start saying, see you tomorrow or wonder where you have been if you miss a day. That kind of helps too.
Also what really helps me is that my uncle goes to the Y with me. So he picks me up everyday.

I've been BAD! I haven't been to workout in about a week. I can feel it too. I hate being in a rut like I'm in now. I control my destiny and my desire and I know I have to do this for me.
It's cool, because once you get into a routine, it becomes habit forming.
And I want to thank you all for the warm welcome! I know I'm going to love this team. I look forward to chatting along with you all in the time ahead of us. God bless you all.

Oh, yes I second the motion about smiling! The staff at our Y is always friendly. I didn't go to the Y today because I had to much to do helping my mother. But you know what?? I missed exercising!!
In the fall I was dragging myself to the Y. So I am excited it finally has happened!! emoticon

I can't get over the atmosphere difference between the other gym I was a member of and the Y.M.C.A. When I walk into the Y, I am greeted not only by the staff, but some of the other members. That means a lot, and I think that if you go to workout and someone speaks to you in a smiling voice it gives you a little more of a possitive outlook on everything, and you tend to workout better and harder.
I might be new but I have a suggestion for us all. Next time you go to the Y to do your workout, greet someone you haven't talked to before with a smile. You may make someones day a lot brighter and you may even make a new friend.

This is a problem at my Y. The water temperature is nice on Sunday and cold the rest of the week. The pool enclosure is cold too. Now we wear surf or diver shirts for warmth. The water is cold in winter and too hot in the summer. So many people have gotten ill, they stopped swimming until spring. My facility was renovated last year. The jaccuzi remains closed until March 2nd.

Do you have itching, etc after swimming? I have an itch that feels like pins and needles. Our swim teachers have the same symptoms. I wash off with oatmeal soap, use cream and still itch. emoticon

We do have trouble at our Y with the water in the pool being warm enough. Our Y is old. I hear that in April that they will be closing the pool area and renovating it. We do have some new equipment that has come in. The biggest loser class started a couple weeks ago. I think that is the only new class going on.
I do like my Y! I go at the same time so I see the same people.

I work and workout at the YMCA in HENDERSON, KY. I've worked there almost 6 yrs and love it. The people are wonderful. I do a little bit of everything, service desk, child care, office, and also orientation for new members to learn how to use the circuit machines.

I love that I can workout after my shift.

Our Y just recently added a Recreaction center for kids, has DDR, basketball game, pool table, ping pong, etc.

Just joined this team, I love going to our YMCA and just added the fitness room into our membership to give us the advantage of using steam room and sauna. Visited the steam room the other day, but only had time for a few minutes. Hope to spend more time in there. We are starting a new class free to members on Monday called "ready to be fit". Did this class once before, but never finished it. Hope to finish this one.

Anyone having a problem with the pool closure and water being cold? The pool area at my Y is 70 degrees and water cool. The jacuzzi is closed for 4-6 weeks due to Bush signing a bill requiring public pools/jacuzzi to install a special drain.

I went to a 9 am pool arthritis class. The temperature was 45 degrees outside and pool closure under 70 degrees. Swim teachers complained b/c members stopped attending class. It was warmer the next day and cold again after that.

Paula... Like you, I like doing a variety of things. Once Labor Day is over, all the new fall programs start. So...I'm looking forward to a fresh start of classes.

Our Y has been closed (except for the exercise equipment rooms for personal use...treadmills, elliptical, etc.) for two weeks for painting, floor refinishing, pool cleaning, etc., in prep for the new season. I've completely stayed away from the place and have done outdoor things for a while. I will feel like I'm "coming home" once back there. I especially miss my muscleflex class. Both the people and the exercise itself!

Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend!

Tenis, so sorry your beach pool has closed! Everyone at the competition pool at our Y was saying all summer how they couldn't wait for school to start. Yeah, that's great if you go early during the day. But after 3:00 you get all the swim teams. Oh well, got to admit, I kind of enjoy watching them even though we're crowded because of it. But then, water is just a sideline of mine, and I know that I wouldn't be so upbeat about it if I were paying my dues to the Y just for access to the competition pool. (as many of my water friends are.)

Speaking of swimming... Swam 1800 yards today in our beach pool (one mile). It is closed during the week because the kids are back in school. Next weekend will be the last weekend I can swim outside. Boo! Absolutely loved swimming there this year and hate to think of such a looooonnnnnng season of swimming indoors!

Hello there,

I joined here a while back but never really checked in like I ought to!

A YMCA is get-a-way that I love very much, lots of regulars and a diverse community...unfortunately is has been closed this week for it's annual maintenance!

emoticon

Anyway, I am a swimmer who is looking forward to getting out of this summer slump I've dived into and think that reconnecting to groups and challenges might very well help me do that....so hello there.

I just thought I would mention that I have shrunk to the medium sized exercise floating belt at the YMCA now. And today I let go of the white noodle I have been using as a safety measure. I am putting the ankle weights on my arms instead. Everyone thinks that the noodle is hindering my movements. Also one of the lifeguards has graciously voluntered to teach me to swim for free. Where else but the YMCA would you find that kindness.

Hey Michelle... Welome back!!! I missed you!!!! Great idea with the personal trainer. Something I've always wanted to do!! Let me know how it is and if you like it.

Thanks for the congrats on the Tri! Had a blast and did better than I thought, and it was tougher than I thought too! Thought I was going to CRAWL over the finish line and it took a week to recover. But still...loved it (once it was over...LOL). One down, one to go. Next one is Aug. 10.

Glad you had fun on your cruise and not to gain to boot! Double whammy! You ROCK!

I'm still in the muscleflex class, but hadn't been or three weeks as they tell you to stop about two weeks before an endurance event. Then there was the week after for recovery. But that's it for now at the Y. I swim at the beach and the tri class is over. But who knows....may run into you sometime there. I'm lookin' to do the masters swim class in the fall...assuming they have one, just to keep me honest with my swimming. Ha!

WELCOME BACK!!!!

Now is time to buckle down and reach my goals. I am meeting with a personal trainer at our Y tom, a little nervous but I hope to get new ideas on strength exercises that do not bench me for weeks afterwards.

I have heard you have to have had graduated from a four year college degree and then have certification in health and fitness training...at least at our Y. Certainly, that would not be an unreasonable thing to ask your Y director. Also, each trainer is going to have their own philosphy about things like with anything else. Hopefully, their differences are within reason! :D

I think it depends on who's in charge of training at your facility. Everyone teaches uniformly and they've implemented a new program of taken a health & wellness assessment so the trainer knows what works and won't work for the client. Personally, if I had your bad experience with the coaches, I wouldn't have stayed at that gym for any amount of time. They're on your time and have to abide by your wishes. If they don't, you should go to whoever is in charge of them.

I heard about the certificated program for trainers and would like to know more about it.

I do not know what type of certificate coaches obtain, but feel it is inadequate. I have had several coaches over the years. Some tried to talk me into using machines and participate in classes my doctor said I shouldn't. All showed me how to use weight machines and event left for a different job. Then when I do weights the way they showed me, a new coach comes along and says I am doing them wrong. The seat is too high or low, etc.

We have new certified coaches and instructors that have members do things that are not good for them and the members end up getting injured.

My facility has each member sign a release that says the Y is not responsible for injuries that occur there.

Tenis, LOL! My triceps have firmed up for sure, but they are still surrounded by some jiggly....loose skin. I notice this whenever I look in the mirrors at the Y while doing the upraised arms exercises. I've come to the conclusion that the jiggly stuff is something I'm going to have to live with to a certain degree...but it is a WHOLE lot better now than it used to be. This is a very common complaint with women. Seems the upper arms just develop "batwings" to some extent or another no matter what you do. emoticon

That's awesome, Paula!

I'm wondering if my somewhat saggy tricepts will ever get firm. I do think it's less jiggly...but I wonder if once there's jiggle, always some jiggle... Time will tell... Still, sooooo many positives!

Tenis, thanks for the link. I'm an "About.com" fan myself and subscribe to a number of their newsletters.

After several attempts to do my weight training in the "weight room" where I just went in and did it all on my own after being given a plan by the staff, I've kind of settled on a program that works better for me. I go to three bodyshape classes a week where I use a 15 pound body bar, 10 lb dumbells and heavy bands and tubes for resistance. I've noticed a huge improvement in my overall fitness since I started doing this consistently. On top of that, I've also seen some lean muscle definition take place in my arms and legs.

I agree even if they are told to be friendly...it works. I'm a school secretary and encounter plenty of situations to make one grumpy, but am forced to be nice. After forcing myself to be pleasant for a while, I truly do feel better! LOL

So...."Put on a happy face!" Now if only our weather would!

Our Y staff also greets and says "goodbye" and "have a nice day". So what if they're told to do it as part if the job? It is still so very nice to have that personal touch, and I think it benefits them also as people respond so well to it! Why not make your work day more pleasant by interacting in a positive way with people?

So.....Are you and Pam (getfitwithPam) at the same Y?

I agree. Also...I have never met such friendly staff as that of our Y. They always greet you with friendly smiles and hellos when you check in and say good-bye when you leave. And the instructors are very nice and supportive.

Just like Pam! (GetfitwithPam)

There's something to be said for competition! LOL! Our Y went through the same process after losing a large percentage of membership to our new local competitor "Gold's". But I think that Gold's has the same reputation (as your Xsportfitnesscenter) for being for the "young" "buff" "singles". and without a doubt not as family friendly.

I do know that quite a few of our dedicated spinning class attendees have left for Gold's. I think they must like the RPM classes which I've heard are quite good. So I'm not trying to trash Gold's....it's just that I think overall, the Y is a much more well rounded program for the whole family.

But I do think the competition with Gold's has made our Y even better.

Amen to that. The other thing I like is the family atmosphere. We have one of those mega workout places not far from the Y, "X Sport Fitness Center." They have it all and is open 365 days, 24 hours a day. But it is not very family friendly. In fact, some have complained it's yuppieville. Large population of younger folk who are already buff and flaunting it with skimpy attire. No thanks! But having it open did force the Y to take it up a notch. We got all new equipment with all the bells and whistles.

The Y is the best deal for my money hands down! I feel like it's my second home....the one where I go to see friends, and kick back and do something for myself, and always have someone to motivate me to do so much more than I would ever do on my own. I'll go in worried or upset about something, and leave feeling so much happier and lighter.

This is just a tiny little thing that bugs me, and maybe I'm being too much of a perfectionist. But....the team name is misspelled. It should be YMCA Members, not Memebers, right? Just curious.

I haven't worked out at the gym for 4 days. I wasn't feeling quite up to par and it will be Wednesday before I can get back into my routine. But I am looking forward to doing so.

Hi everyone!

I've just moved to Rutherford County, Tennessee and joined the Y here. It is very nice, looks quite new, and has a terrific team of employees. There are lots of upgrades going on, TONS of classes, and I'm looking forward to getting to know my Y!

Hi Bullet, I hope you are enjoying your vacation. That is great that you are continuing to work out at a YMCA. Isn't it wonderful that where ever we go, there is usually a YMCA close by. Will look forward to your return on Thursday.

Hey Ladies: I'm on vaction right now and been on vaction for a week now. I've blocked sparkpeople from my life all the way.

I got to the st. thomas YMCA for my MA training, swimming and the weight-room. No, I haven't been fully active since I started vaction, but on THURSDAY I will be.

Oh, you are truly a great fan and supporter of your team. That must be loads of fun, going to the bowl games.

For one who has lived in Tennessee all of her life, I certainly do not know much about it...LOL. I do know the mountainous areas are breathtakingly beautiful, especially in the fall. I did have the opportunity to travel to Eastern Tennessee several years ago.

Nashville is a really fun place to go, as well. And of course, Memphis does have the home of Elvis, and all of that going on. I live about 40 miles north of Memphis, and believe me, I stay away from there during the January days around Elvis's birthday, and during the August memorial of his death. People do come from all over the world to celebrate his birthday and to attend the memorial services in August.

Hope you can venture back to this area one day. Perhaps Boise State will play in the Liberty Bowl again, and you and your mom can make it back down.

Take care, and I wish you the best of luck in reaching your goals.

No, just been fans since I went there in the 80s. My mom LOVES the kids/players and both folks volunteer at football and basketball games. Dad HATES to travel at his age and basically if I take her he pays for most of it. :o) I really have a blast taking my mom on "road trips" to watch games, especially when it's a bowl or tournament game.

For the Liberty bowl we decided to go REALLY last minute and wound up flying into St. Louis and driving the 2 1/2 hours down to Memphis. It really was such a wonderful trip with such beautiful sites. Louisville caught us in the last three minutes and we lost, but had such a blast it was easy to convince my husband and son to go down to Phoenix for this past bowl game (the Fiesta Bowl - woohooo!)

I really want to get back to your area sometime again in my lifetime. I really would like to drive over to Little Rock and across your state to Nashville. Hey! Was Graceland really a zoo this past week?? Just wondering...

I remember when Boise State played in the Liberty Bowl, and I am glad that you were here for the game. Do you have a friend or relative on the football team? Oh yes, the barbeque here is fantastic, according to what I hear, although I haven't eaten any in years and years. I hope you can get back down this way some day soon.

Hello Pam! I was in Memphis two years ago for the Liberty bowl. It is SO BEAUTIFUL there and ya'll are SO FRIENDLY. But you must have to go to the Y a heck of a lot to burn off the calories from that fantastic Bar-B-Que. Drooling here just thinking about what we ate on that trip... emoticon

Oh yeah, my main YMCA is in Boise, Idaho.

The YMCA where I work is located near Memphis, Tennesee. Where are the rest of you located? Our Y was built in 2001. Actually, I have worked at one YMCA or another for about 26 years. It's fun to work at the YYYYYYYYYYYY-M-C-A...LOL.

Hello Everyone...Why don't we each tell a little about our YMCA? The YMCA near me is only six years old, but there is a YMCA located in the downtown area that was built back in the day when "Young Men," really did live there. It looks more like a hotel than a gym. Over the past few years, the lower levels have been remodeled into what is now a state of the art gym with all of the updates added. The top levels are no longer used, but I am sure there were many "Young Men," who were in and out of those now vacated rooms back when the YMCA was first established over 150 years ago.
