Depends on what bodyparts I am doing. 15-20 lbs DB for shoulders and arms, 25-30 for chest, 100-120 Barbells for deadlifts. 35-40 lb DB for back . 180-200 for squats. I used to lift much heavier but I lost a lot of strength. I know women that lift much much heavier. If you don't keep increasing the weight, your muscles won't grow.

I use a variety of proten powders, pea, hemp rice. You can make your own blend and order it from trueprotein.com

How heavy do you lift? What protein powder do you use?

I just lift 8, 10 or 12 pound dumb bells and 20 pounds bar bell.

Hi I haven't been on Spark much lately but trying to get back here and there. I am preparing for another competition, not sure if I will do both figure and body bulding.

Is this still a thread on how to build muscle? I successfully gained 16 lbs of lean mass (I don't call it pure muscle because there's water in there as well, but 16 lbs that was not fat) in 4 months, I went from 92 lbs to 106 and lost 2 lbs of fat in the process, but to gain muscle you have to eat an excess of calories. My maintenance is about 1500 calories and I was eating 2000-2500 calories a day, but if you eat clean you won't gain fat! I didn't. You can lift as hard and heavy as you can but if you don't eat extra calories you won't build significant muscle. I have pics to prove it, I look totally buff. It didn't take more protein, I was eating 60% carbs and more fat. I ate alot of bananas, avocados.
and yogurt.

How did I build muscle?
1)Weight lifting heavy, no girlie exercises but muscle head lifting or compound exercises like
1.deadlifts
2.heavy squats with barbells
3.leg press
4.military press
5.bench press
6. pullups
go heavy, increase weight every week

2)Always have a post workout shake with protein and carbs immediately after lifting

3)Have another post workout meal with whole foods with carbs and protein about 1 to 2 hours after

4)Eat eat eat (I ate 6-8 meals)and don't be afraid of eating

5)eat protein or have a protein shake immediately before bed and immediately after waking up

That's how I built muscle without gaining any fat.

okay, PTCOACHRODGER, it's June 21st! How did you do with the Shawn T Insanity DVD and the P90X???? We have P90X and I am thinking about starting it after having gone through a surgery which has set me back and after trying vegetarianism for the last 3 months. It looks like it would be just like having my trainer screaming at me (ha) but it also looks like a commitment in advance kind of thing, you know?

I'm a personal trainer and I teach/lead 9-12, 1 hour classes per week (spin, cardio conditioning, power sculpting, circuit training) which, I participate in every one so, I get a lot of exercise and cardio just from these activities.

I also do my own strength training broken up into body parts (i.e. back & bicep, full leg, chest & tricep). In addition, this month I joined a challenge on FB to do 3,000 push-up the month of May (100 per day)!

Since I'm 50+, I've decided to stay lean which, is the reason behind my decision to adapt a vegan lifestyle. So, next month I'm going to start Shawn T's 60-day Insanity DVD and follow that with Tony Horton's 90-day P90X DVD.

That's what I do to build lean muscle!

thanks for the list! I did not know that spinach contains protein.

About the soy yogurt, some brands are quite good, but if you want to try it, I would definitely recommend to buy first a small quantity, cause other brands taste more like chalk powder mixed with sugar and water ;-)

thx ds9kie! To be honest, I tend to buy the vg protein that is available at the store I'm in. Most of the time, there is just one. The one I have now is PC vegetarian proteins and it contains soy, rice, pea and hemp. For breakfast, I usually have cereals (often whole grains) in soy yogurt, topped with cinnamon. Lots of cinnamon :-)
