Well, funny how as time passes and you practice what you want to see happen in your life. It all starts to naturally work that way by itself.

I'm keeping track of my credit card expenses, hoping to spend less as I now am paying attention instead of just doing a mental, "I think this will turn out okay" :-) I'm also keeping track of my food expenses, trying to get those down a bit.

I just came back from an expensive vacation and have to figure out how to budget the rest of this year's expenses. My DH turns 70 in August and the family is planning a surprise vacation I'll have to figure out how to contribute to without his guessing until I want him to know :-)

I'm thinking of taking over the daily bookkeeping for us, the bill paying and just have DH do the investment part, share some of the drudge work.

How's the budget sticking Vtricia? Ours is getting all shot to heck :-) with these fleas and subsequent cat problems. How blissful July was when I should have known and started work and then this might not have come out this way.

I changed my sign in from tricia_v because it was a pain to type on an onscreen keyboard and the iPad is remember me impaired. I was going to do more of an orderly transition but since I decided on such a slight change, I figured I'd just I'd it.

As I was reviewing my goals this morning I thought there has to be a team for sticking to a budget, and here you are! I think my first step is just to get a handle on things where less is going out than is coming in. My monthly budget says this should be the case, but I have been dipping into credit just a little each month. :(

How many credit cards do you have? I only used one, my husband used the "other" (both by the same bank but we carry opposite ones so if one card has a problem and gets frozen when we are on vacation, we have the other) but I use Paypal and they make you use your bank account or their credit card for stuff and I wanted to get my bank account off there so I got their credit card, not to use at all but just to get around their rules; I use my one/actual credit card.

However, twice now in the last month or two I've needed something and my credit card has had a problem and my husband has not been around (since we're not on vacation :-) and I've had to use my too-high interest Paypal card to get medicine, etc. and so now I have these two card statements coming in (which my husband, who does the bill paying hates) and goodly amounts on each, etc. and it's throwing off my planning.

Not that I can remember to plan for needing all my prescriptions at once ($300+). I'm going on an expensive vacation next February so I'm trying to buy/pay things I need for that as I go along now so the cost is spread out but then I get this second card in there and it gets messier to think about.

I saved $500+ yesterday without even trying. My landscaper wanted to do a spring cleanup in the next month but I told him no leaf, bush, or blade of grass had dared get out of place since his fall cleanup so there was no need at all! emoticon

I got to Florida successfully. I'm saving all the receipts I personally get, just throwing them into my carryall and when I get home in March, I'll total them or do something with them, just to see. I'm not otherwise trying to keep track of this month since it is so sporadic and we're out so much, etc.

We went to a seafood restaurant down on the Intercoastal Waterway like DH wanted and it was okay but not great but way too expensive, $74 and all he got was a steak and cheese sandwich. But his drinks, he didn't even like, were really expensive I think; for that price they should have used real glasses instead of plastic cups? I had salmon and ordered an appetizer (fried conch, I wanted to see what that was like, I've never had it but it's on every menu down here) but was only drinking beer.

The Lactaid milk and tablets at the grocery store (or tablets at any drugstore) are great and a life saver for me. I take one of those when I'm out and about having pizza or Mexican/Italian or other very lactose meals and am fine :-) Your granddaughter probably shouldn't avoid dairy since she needs her calcium and D, etc.? Yogurt is apparently "special" in that the cultures help in some way. Tell her to watch out for caramel (and milk chocolate); it's loaded. I found out the hard way, was really ill for a day and a half.

I came up with a bad cold a couple days ago so I'm suffering now. I have to use my asthma rescue inhaler too often so that's hyping me up and the cold pills I like, Advil Cold and Sinus (which you have to get from the pharmacist behind the counter after signing your life away and showing identification) don't help in that regard either so I don't feel very good even when I feel better.

We went a couple days ago and got eye exams and new glasses. Ouch; that was expensive. I now have the new blinds and the eye glasses on this month's budget so have totally "broken" it and next month I'll be vacationing so. . .

my granddaughter got tested and found out that she was latose intorant.. the dr. told her the only thing that does not have lactose in it was fruits and veggies raw... even meat is injected with milk to make it last longer is what he told my daughter... she was surprised... hers is not really bad though and as long as she avoids milk and most dairy she is ok..she still eats her mac and cheese though as she loves that.. i still do not have my meds straightened out yet and so far and having a terrible time breathing.. hopefully by this week I will have all the new meds and can try to get things straightened out... no fun this way for sure..

I'm trying to wade through my medicines at the moment and what I want to try to see if I can boost my day-to-day health/way I feel. That will take some discipline (I'm going to try going to bed the same time each night and waking and getting up to an alarm, taking my medicine at exact times, having an exact morning routine. I'm even going to take my coffee seriously; drink it black for a couple days, see if I have any reactions (I sneeze so often and am so stuffy sometimes!), then, if I don't, add my Lactaid milk, if still no reactions, add the sugar :-) If the coffee causes problems, too bad, I'm not giving that up, LOL.

I was reading about thyroid replacement pills and they have to have a bulking agent (the amount of medicine is smaller than an eye can see!) and it's either lactose or chalk. So, just for the heck of it, I might take a Lactaid pill with my med, "in case". Since I use my Lactaid milk, I don't worry about lactose but, like now, I have cheese in my omelet and can easily get lactose in things without knowing it, throughout the day. So, I'll just experiment, see if I can improve how I feel at various times, pay attention and see when I don't feel particularly well and like that.

My December Excel spreadsheet of my finances, use of my credit card, trying to keep within a budget consistent with my assumed Social Security benefits (October or November, maybe waiting until next January) worked really well and I'm excited to be starting January's page. Fortunately I copied the page as it was a template and before anything month-specific was entered and made a "book" for the whole year, renaming sheets up to at least May I think.

We have leaves turning right and left and some early maples dropping leaves but today will be the typical wet and cool fall day. I didn't sleep very well because of already getting into the Halloween candy, my breathing (or lack of it) says that's not good for me :-)

I figured out what I'm going to write about for NaNoWriMo this year www.nanowrimo.org/ my 3rd great grand aunt; I'll make up a story of her life, fill in all the frustrating blanks I can't find anything about, LOL. So, I have a lot of plotting and organizing to do on that before the 1st so I can get writing right away, get ahead so I can go away for Thanksgiving.

We restocked our cupboards and refrigerator last weekend and hadn't really been anywhere! Apples were on sale here and I picked up some Gala ones. Had never eaten them before but they were cheaper than the red delicious that I normally buy. They were good and sweet, not as crisp but good. Also bought bananas and grapes. Our household does good on getting the fruits in it's the veggies we have to work on adding to our diet and eliminating all the carbs we consume. Slow process but getting better.
It has turned chilly here and the leaves are falling all over the place. Some color but not as much in prior years.
Last night was bowling and had a good time but we lost all 4 games and our team is in last place for the league. Tonight is a landlord meeting that I attend for the company...then free evenings until Saturday when I host the Bunco group.
Have a great day and a successful week!

I just got my food delivered, finally; we hadn't gone to the store since we got back over a week ago and I went a week before we left and so it's been a month; I've been eating the moths out of the cupboards and this delivery was going on $300! But my freezer and fridge is full of meat and we have breakfast supplies for DH and I have apples and bananas; I've been out of apples for a long time, last time I had one was when I bought 4 delicious ones in England! They actually had a grocery store, one of their chains, a very small grocery store but with "everything" in one of the highway pit stop areas.

Go on vacation to a foreign country, Linda, I recommend it highly emoticon

I'm pretty much out of my rut I think, have not quite gotten my feet back under me and into a good routine, still have to figure out where I am genealogically and what I want to work on there but am determined to be more active in my life instead of just following my same-old, same-old each day.

I appear to be better at seeing what needs to be done and doing it than I was before we left. Yes, I knew "vacuuming" needed doing but kept putting it off but the first night back in the dirty sheets and gritty floor had me changing the bed and washing everything and vacuuming upstairs; I feel like I'm more sensitive to what's going on around me.

Everything was so "small" in England, we had to sleep in single beds (instead of our king and the hotel rooms were that much smaller too), I especially didn't like the restaurant seats as they were hard to get to and too few of them, little tiny restaurants and small, cheap chairs I was afraid would break under DH or me, etc. I kept thinking of Gulliver's Travels :-)

The hotels had hand towels and bath but no washcloths for some reason! Just odd things would be rearranged or missing or substituted and it made you think about your routines and how you normally did things. Very good for breaking up stale thinking.

Well we are headed into the second week of October and I feel as if I'm spinning my wheels..so much I want to do and no motivation to do it! Must get ready shortly and drive two hours to a wedding then back home tonight. Then tomorrow need to get some house cleaning done before the work week starts as Thursday I have 12 ladies coming for our Bunco Night. I know it will all work out one way or the other..just seems there are a thousand thoughts running through my head at once.
Doing better at making healthier choices at eating and most days do some form of exercise. Still having issues with portion control and trying to shut down the night time munchies.
Finances have seen a little breathing room but with the holidays approaching it will be a tight squeeze.
Still have my motivation...it's just on a partial Spark Break!

Yes, I'm in the final throes of getting ready today, so many tiny details. My bit of left over money will go to Bonnie :-) I use to have a little leftover money from my 1968 trip someplace but I don't think any of those coins are used anymore (Soviet bloc of Eastern Europe) and I think I only had a "pence" from London.

Reading through all the posts and see you are headed to London! Congratulations and have a wonderful trip. My granddaughter was there with People to People in July and she really enjoyed the London Eye and seeing all the great buildings. She did have some left over pounds..not much..maybe about $20.00 our money, but she gave it all to our neice who is planning a trip in the Spring of 2012.

Today is a quiet day after a very busy day yesterday of work & play. Lot's of eating out for birthday and trying to get back on track calorie wise today!

Fall Festival time in our small town so will be a hetic weekend with a family reunion thrown in.

Have a great day.

We just got one of our toilet fixed and I talked DH into replacing the innards which was expensive and the money came out of our checking account which DH says has all the "extra" money we can afford for the day-to-day trip expenses/ATM use while we're over there. I don't quite know why money makes me anxious; I have "plenty" but guess it goes back to when I was living on my own for 15 years and living hand-to-mouth.

I'm doing pretty well; my husband has suggested moving my big trip credit card balance to another card with much smaller interest rate; if that happens I'll feel "free" and will probably be relieved and spend more than I am these days, since these days I feel like I have the money I've spent on the trip already, breathing down my neck, LOL.

The biggest help it will be will be for meats and the heavy cat litter and awkward toilet paper, etc. My local store does not have good produce or meats so it's often disappointing to go do your grocery shopping and have to go a different day to a different store that's much further away for good meat and produce, etc. Now the only thing I can't get delivered is some personal care items DH needs, his denture stuff, and his bakery stuff and the local store has those fine.

It's extremely decadent; they bring the bags right into your house, put them right in front of your refrigerator for you; you sign the charge slip and you're done.

I love the bags it all comes in too, they're really large, 1-1/2 to 2 times larger than a brown grocery bag, stand-alone, heavy-duty, white plastic with good, "regular" handles and are excellent for storing stuff or carrying stuff from one room to another, etc. I remember how after I moved the few I'd left over finally got used up and were no more and I was so sad :-)

When he finally got here I went out and called to him, "Watch out, I'm going to kiss you!" LOL They'd had a problem, not enough truck packers had shown up for work (who would not show up for such a good, well paying job in this economy?) so they were running behind; I got an automated call that it could be up to 3 hours late with the delivery and I had the 4:30-9:30 p.m. time slot so I was teasing DH and our friend who was over that with my luck, they'd be trying to deliver to me at 12:30 a.m. this morning. They got here about 8:00 and the delivery guy thought I was happy about that, but I explained how happy I was they were delivering here, that I'd been waiting six years for that.

I'm in big trouble now; my good grocery store finally delivers to my house: www.peapod.com/

I heard an ad from the TV around 9:30 p.m. Saturday night for another grocery store that said, "your groceries are just a click or phone call away!" and thought, "no way THEY deliver!" and looked it up out of curiosity and they have an order online and pick-up at the store deal where you go to special parking spaces at the store and they come out and load up your car, you don't even have to get out of the car. So, they being smaller/new comers to the area, I once again checked my Peapod/Giant Food people that I used to have deliver where I use to live but which kept coming up "we don't in your area yet, stay tuned" for the last 6 years and almost fell out of my chair when it let me in this time. I got right to work! LOL

So, at 10:30 on Saturday night I'm ordering food that's going to be delivered Sunday afternoon, including the heavy old cat litter! But it's everything; fruits, vegetables, good meats. . . I'm never going outside again.

The air quality has gotten back bad again; we went out last night for dinner, Friday night "date night" and breathing was not fun, just that little exposure.

Yes, I'll let Scott drive, I ain't (but I'm going to get the International (UN-sponsored) driver's license for additional identity).

Yesterday our daughter-in-law brought the grandchildren over and the five of us went on a boat ride, the three of them went swimming in the river but the current/wind was really strong and we had to anchor the boat and it was a little hard with their mother alone keeping the two children safe in the water. We lost one of the "noodles", www.poolfloatsmart.com/foam-pool-flo
at
s/supersoft-pool-noodle-super-duper-R>3475.html
it got away from the grandson and d-i-l started swimming after it but she couldn't catch up and it wasn't worth it (we have 3-4 more).

But, I was caught off guard with their coming; they were coming today and going to the zoo with other friends yesterday but the other friends swapped days on them so they asked to come over and what could I say? LOL. But it meant I didn't even get to consider going to yoga last night. At least now my living room is sort of vacuumed and picked up; I had been neglecting that by working on my genealogy really hard the last couple weeks.

those are definitely things you need to do... didn't know they did not tip in England.. things will be different for sure... that driving on the wrong side would definitely mess me up..

I used my ATM card the other day to make sure it would work so when I got to England I won't have any problems in case I need money. I was suggesting to my DH that he make sure we have quite a bit of money in our account when we go over, it looks like things are both more expensive and the exchange rate makes them 40% more expensive above that too!

I asked him to talk to the bank and make sure there weren't ridiculously low allowances of how much you could take from an ATM per day; here it's $300 which is fine for here but I think we might need more than 300 Pounds per day, the hired car trip from the airport to the hotel alone is over 60.

Luckily they don't "tip" in England like we do here so that will make it a little better, not having to worry about stray amounts of money to always have in one's pocket.

I think I've pretty much decided I'm not going to London this Fall. In addition to the amount of money it would take I don't think I am physically "ready" or interested. I haven't done any genealogy work for a couple weeks either, would probably not be ready for the intense work I imagine doing.

I'm kind of at a loss as to vacations and travelling and where to spend money anymore. With DH's bad legs now and my various aches and pains and plans for yoga, kayaking and fencing, I don't know that I was even thinking of Florida in February with the idea of going for a shorter period of time next year if DH insists. I know I don't want to buy a place down there and we spent a whole lot of our time this February looking for a place and I can't imagine what we'd do every day, all day if we did not have that activity?

A friend came over last night and he and I immediately got into an argument about. . . the weather! Then he mentioned his birthday which I thought was this Thursday but I got that wrong too, it was last night. I was arguing with him about that too emoticon and he stomped out. It didn't help that he came when DH and I were just sitting down to dinner. I was able to make up that we were going to take him out to dinner on Thursday :-) and this morning I sent him a nice email apologizing for getting his birthday wrong and telling him we would take him out any night he wanted and to any place. I did not apologize about my understanding of the weather :-)

I feel like I'm in the middle, summer months where things are less serious and just stretch on and on (in the hot, noonday sun? :-) and a lot of motivation is in danger of going by the wayside.

But I'm not in much danger of spending too much this summer; no travelling is planned and only next weekend when a cousin is visiting and 4th of July are likely to be parties at my house. I'm working on buying frozen fish for myself instead of going out to more expensive restaurants to eat it once/twice a week and that might save $100 a month on our "entertainment" bill. I'm committed to a less expensive night out on Friday/pizza night and that too could save us an additional $25-$40 a month.

I am concentrating on wanting to go to London in September and guess I'll wait until week 3 of June to start campaigning hard for a commitment so I can call and make reservations, and plan better, know how much money I'll want to work toward "making" so my husband isn't as uncomfortable with the costs.

So, my stock I bought had a sudden upturn and I had DH sell it Saturday and asked if I could buy a new refrigerator with the profit. Spent Saturday researching and driving around to 6 stores to find what I wanted/needed (turned out there is only 1 refrigerator made that matches all our criteria; we have a "space" problem so size limited us mostly, followed by my DH only wanted "white" and we didn't want an ice maker and most models now come with one.

I'm very excited; it gets delivered on Wednesday.

I am stressing out today because I keep trying to justify spending the money to get my hair permed at the beauty salon tomorrow. I was trying to save money and not get it done but honestly I look like a puppy dog with flappy ears! I save enough money every year to put in both of our Roth IRAs, save $100 a month towards a new car and am a thrifty shopper, so why do I feel so bad about doing this one small thing that will make me look and probably feel great? emoticon

My husband's credit card bill came yesterday and is very high; my medical bills from the fall on Christmas Eve, our new living room furniture, all the restaurants we ate in on vacation in Florida. But doesn't look like too much big happening in the next month or two.

My husband gave me his zip drive yesterday to print out a few financial papers, including his "book" he wrote me on how our finances work. I did not instantly print them out :-) Another is a paper for my IRA, They don't have a beneficiary page in my things they say. I guess I'll get started on those today/now.

It is nice being home; I feel like I'm more in control of my spending. I want to spend the rest of the year working with my cats and getting them comfortable with getting in their carriers. I told my DH I was going to buy expensive scratching posts/roosts for them; you know, those 4-6 foot tall ones with multiple platforms? Currently our one cat uses the living room and my bedroom furniture for his claws and they're torn to shreds and we're replacing the living room stuff. I'd like to be able to cut their claws or take them to a groomer, etc. I can't do any of that at the moment, can't get them to the vet even, much less a groomer or cut their claws myself.

We just got a call from our Realtor that she can't meet us today and postponed it to tomorrow. We're spending a lot of money on food and eating out. I guess if we had our own place it wouldn't be like that, especially if it wasn't a "beach" place so close to the action, LOL.

The possibilities seem so much better here in the sun. I don't like the neighborhoods and those I do like are the ones with million dollar homes (but how would you meet anyone?) but then I realize I don't like THAT much space, don't need five bedrooms, even for once a year if we were besieged by all our relatives at once. But they have nice, larger houses, with lake views and their own pools for what we're paying for in Maryland but no snow. This is my current dream home.

That sounds great that you are doing better! Look for low salt veggie soups (I love my Health Valley www.healthvalley.com/products.php ) they're filling and don't require diluting, you can just pour the can in a mug and nuke it and it's a couple servings of veggies. I do them and the low sodium V8 to make up my vegetables if I'm low.

Now I'm looking at the long haul and when I get back home. I think I'm going to have to give in and exercise/maybe join a gym or the Army :-) I have no muscle and I don't think that's going to get better over time.

well I have to say that I am doing a little better..the dr. scared me enough Friday that I am really watching what I eat and logging it in on here so I can keep track of my potassium levels.. which are low...wwould you believe I have lost 3 pounds since Friday...think it is the no salt, lots of veggie and fruit thing... I am still having trouble getting in enough veggies and fruit.. even without eating meat, the salad or snack that I eat fills me up and I do not want anything else..but I am still at it..this is really a challenge..

Yesterday DH asked me about where I wanted to stop on the way back (a town in mid-North Carolina founded and named after my 4-8th great grands) so we might go through there; I guess I should start studying that line of mine again (my father's mother's father's, father's father's father's, etc.).

We went to a bookstore last night and I didn't get any books; I was too tired to look properly and had finally gotten my Nook to work with this wi-fi and two books downloaded to it. That was hard! But now I should be able to get more.

I'm not sure if I like this series I've started; I'm over halfway through the first book and have the second waiting, already downloaded but it isn't turning out to be something I can really like; it's "scary" without being rewarding. It's a combination of medieval and wild west with both nobles and indians and cavalry but is turning into an anti-logging/green thing with the protagonist a 19 year old at the kingdom's version of West Point only he's been magicked by a forest queen who reminds me of the Hawaiians (she very large/fat). Can you tell how hard it is to tie all those ingredients together? LOL

The forest people are known as "specks" and our hero's best friend at the academy is "Spink". The group of guys he's with are "new nobles" sons and they're getting hazed/hurt by the old nobles sons, none of which have to do with the Forest people who are on the frontier that the new noble sons are familiar with but the old noble ones are mostly just for "show" aren't familiar with the frontier and the Forest people are causing magical plague, only the hero's/conquering people don't believe in magic and/or believe their iron bullets stop the magic (did the plains people/indians' magic).

I think I have to keep reading to see how/if the author holds this all together. I read a 3-volume set I liked by the same author is why I bought this one. It's a little uncomfortable since one of my great grandfathers was a lumber baron and stripped all of Michigan and then went on to work on the Pacific Northwest, Washington and California :-)

I just got a call from my doctor's office and decided to postpone my appointment from tomorrow, when we're expecting bad weather, to Wednesday when the temps are supposed to climb to the 40's.

We're leaving around Noon, Wednesday to drive from Maryland down to Florida for the month of February so I'm working on getting all my chores done by tomorrow night.

I'm up early, this First of January. I was tossing and turning and just getting off-and-on light sleep for two or three hours in the middle of the night so decided to get up around 4:30. I feel/felt good and turned up the heat and made coffee and have been working well here online. It's supposed to be a overcast day with rain this evening so I'll play it by ear, go back to bed in an hour or two if I need to. Here it is almost 7:00 and it's still dark out!

Well, we went up to the Philly area to visit family, those we were supposed to visit Sunday but cancelled because of the snow. Son#2 emailed everyone and said how about yesterday afternoon so we all drove up. It was a bit much for me; I should have sat in the back seat with my leg up, I shouldn't have wore the stiff new jeans over my leg (one of the blisters on top of my knee rubbed opened, a no-no, infection worry) and we didn't get home until Midnight and I was exhausted and hurting.

I'm back on the couch today with my leg up, see if I can't improve things again. I just realized how our actions can influence "cost", it's not just physical from lack of exercise or gaining weight or nutrition being bad, simple things like not taking care may cost me another doctor's visit and/or complications.

I assume my fall and ER visit is going to cost us a bit. I decided over the weekend I didn't need an orthopedist; it was very good to hear in the ER that there was nothing broken, everything just horribly bruised. After I get the stitches off of my nose today or tomorrow, I think I'll will be able to heal slowly alone. I did read that people with my knee sometimes need physical therapy though.

We ducked and missed some snow the other night the news said. We've just had mostly flurries and the half inch the other day, right when we got home in that one-day mad rush thing. I'm just hoping it's pretty clear for the 2nd of February so we can leave and that Larry can get here and get "back" here when he goes out, if there's snow during the month, to care for the cats.
