Not much. weeding! We had so much rain this spring, we couldn't get out to clean up, prepare the ground, etc... So, I sort of gave it up for this season. It was too late to really get anything started with our short season of decent weather. But, I am prepping and getting some ideas for some fall planting, which I've never done before. Also doing some fun structures to be ready for next year!

BE YOURSELF! BE YOU! You can do it!

That's odd as I also had no success with squash or cukes this year. Also, for the first time, I had to take a small paintbrush and pollinate my tomatoes and a couple of my pepper plants. I had tons of bloom but no veggie. I lost half the crop I could have had before someone suggested the paintbrush idea.
Anyway, can't do much as it's raining on and off, so will just make due with pulling a few weeds and pulling a couple tomatoes to make fried green tomatoes tonight for dinner. I have to remove some weight off my vines as they are breaking before the tomato is ready. It's a strange year as my heirloom tomato plants easily reached 6 ft tall. I don't know what to think!

Today I trimmed lower branches off of tomato plants and pulled off the ripe tomatoes. I have had so many tomatoes this year. I have fried, made soup, spaghetti sauce, Spanish rice, etc. Everyday I had more to prep. I still have a lot. I have given them to people. My squash and cucumbers plants have not produced. This is strange for usually they do well on their own. I will pull them out tomorrow. Waste of time this year. Time to get the ground ready for Fall planting the end of August.

Repotted our new tomato plants into larger pots until we can get them in the ground. Also managed to plant some flowers in front of the house. Hubby had to help me, but I wanted to try at least to do some planting. Still more to do, but have to accept the fact that at least for the next month, I'm going to have to ask for help because I can't do it by myself.

We bought more tomato plants to replace the ones that drowned with all the rain. Can't plant them in the garden yet, but going to replant into bigger pots in the meantime. They were being clearanced for 25 cents each or 18 for $2. The ones in the gallon containers were 50 cents.

Yes. We got lots of rain yesterday too. I think the tomatoes are finished and we have to try and find replacements. And those are going to be planted in hills this time like our fellow gardeners at the park district plots have been doing because the ground there just doesn't drain very well. If it is wet, the roots don't sit in water and rot. If it is dry, then being in hills means the water you give them doesn't get pulled away like a sponge by all the surrounding dry ground. This is the 3rd year (not in a row thankfully) that we've lost plants due to too much rain.
The main reason for poor drainage is that they haven't plowed the plots in years, they just till the surface. So the soil below is all compacted. If we had enough land, we'd forgo the plots altogether and just plant at home. Oh well, we do what we can and learn from past difficulties.

If it's to be, it's up to ME.

emoticon Good Morning!
I had a terrific day yesterday. I cut away the dead evergreens that died this past winter...orange evergreens are dead Fred.
My rib didn't like me using emoticon the loppers...I guess. Planning to transplant a rhodo there and some shade loving plants: Lady's Mantle, wild ginger, etc.

I also picked up a 3 tiered bird bath fountain that I need to re-finish.
I am working on getting outside to enjoy a bit of every Summer Day we have. Last night was so clear for emoticon star gazing too! Have a great day today!

A nursery near me has huge golden pepper plants emoticon and cauliflower, tomatoes, emoticon etc for...pardon the pun...dirt cheap...$4 for 6 cauliflower and 2 peppers! You might want to check out and see what yours has. These plants are 6 times larger than those I already have in the ground. June just seems to have flew by this year!
Well of course after days of rain being forecast and not a drop fell... the rain emoticon came while we were out visiting our grandson...so now my laundry is rinsing on the clothesline emoticon
Correction: emoticon I received 9 cauliflower plants that are a foot tall with the 2 gold pepper plants for $4 emoticon that is 37 cents a piece! Just planted them!

Send us some of your rain! We've had a few sprinkles but it barely moistens the surface of the soil. That's typical of our summer weather, though. It usually stops raining altogether in early July, and doesn't start up again until late September.

I pulled out some of the spring veggies--broccoli, collards, peas, lettuces, and did in-place composting on one of the beds; I transplanted some basil to another. The tomatoes are getting huge, but so far everything is very, very green. I did some staking and pruning.

Sorry to say, I had to put out rat traps. A rat family moved in a few weeks ago and now they are everywhere! I started live-trapping and moving them to the park, but now they are coming out during the daytime and running around in plain view (ugh!) so I know there must be dozens of them. They're eating the peas, beans, and cucumbers, and I really worry about their carrying disease. It's awful.

Carolyn, Seattle

transplanted a small tree that its container kept being blown over in the heavy wind. Then put it out in the rain so that the new soil around it will seep into the places that I could not get to., Got a square container so that it would not keep falling over in the wind that we get.

We've had lots of rain and the tomatoes are starting to wilt. Hubby is digging around the plants to give the water a place to drain, as well as hilling up against the plants so they can form more roots above the saturated soil and hopefully will survive this.

We have been getting a lot of rain! So glad I have containers because if I had a regular garden it would have been flooded. Moved my containers again and planted a few more seeds.

So glad it rained here too, so we're set for at least a week before we have to think about watering. Right now I'm an armchair gardener, until my ankle heals. Hubby has to do all the work until my cast comes off, but luckily I have a couple of friends who volunteered to help too.

Seeds are all coming up now, the plants are growing and we have some small tomatoes on the vines too. Strawberries are getting ripe and hubby has been picking them so I can freeze them for later.

If it's to be, it's up to ME.

Watered all my planters. Planted zucchini, acorn squash, spaghetti squash, watermelon, and kidney beans. Still have the cantaloupe, honeydew, and cucumbers to plant at the plots we rent, but I had left those at home, so have to finish up in the morning.

Am starting to pick fresh strawberries too!

Cut dead branches out of the trees with my pole saw. Going to finish (hopefully) planting seeds in my garden plots tonight if I don't get eaten alive by the mosquitoes (got 30 mosquito bites when planting Tuesday evening. They really itch!)

I planted sweet potatoes, and put some summer bulbs in pots (they are supposed to go in the front flower bed but I still have to dig up the rest of the daffodils there and get it ready).
Also had to do lots of watering for all the flowers and veggies still in pots and planters.

All the rows are marked out, as well as where the transplants go. Bought the rest of the seeds and am ready to plant tomorrow. Ran out of daylight today, unfortunately. Got the fence set up earlier this week, which has to be done before we can set any plants out (we rent plots from the park district, and it's near the forest preserve, so we have to fence it or the deer and raccoons are going to be helping themselves to everything growing).

If it's to be, it's up to ME.

Finally dried out enough so hubby could rototill the garden plots we rent from the park district (we got the fence posts up a month ago- have to put up fence to try and keep the deer out - but then the frequent rains have meant it's been too wet to do anything else since). Hopefully we can get it marked off and get some planting done today.

My mother-in-law called the one "wild lettuce". Leaves look like the dandelion family, but the roots grow parallel to the surface of the soil (rhizomes) instead of straight down. Pulling can weaken the plant, but since the rhizomes go out in all directions, they still grow back, as well as forming new plants all along the rhizomes. Also have perennial grassy weeds that do the same thing, maybe orchard grass or quack grass. AND I'm battling thistles, creeping charlie, violets, yellow nutsedge, and common milkweed there, not to mention the volunteer shasta daisies and yarrow sprouting all over in that area.
I was pulling weeds for an hour or two each day while picking strawberries last year, but they all grew back and I couldn't keep up over the summer. Hopefully I will be able to at least keep it somewhat under control if I am diligent this year, at least enough so the strawberries don't get choked out.

They sound like the mother-in-law plant that has a root system that went all over the place and you had to trace the roots to get them all out. Had to do that when we moved here and that is what the people had planted and they were just going wild in this yard and growing where ever they choose

I pulled weeds in the strawberry bed today. Not that it is going to make much of a difference in the long run. The weeds are the type that keep coming back because of the roots, which spread outward. Pulling them probably creates MORE weeds, because they grow new shoots from every root segment left behind. But maybe it will help at least until the strawberries are ripe. After that, I HAVE to move the plants so I can dig up the bed and carefully remove every last root that I can find.

If it's to be, it's up to ME.

Spent the afternoon cleaning out my garden shed, moving stuff that doesn't belong there and chasing the spiders out. I even left the windows open hoping some of my wasp buddies that do such a good job in my barn would come and live in the shed for the Summer. We'll see.

I finished putting in some annual flowers last evening and the soil is just a bit too wet to be messing with it. I have to walk through part of it to get to one of the beds and it's just mush. Think I'll give it a couple of days to dry up a bit.

Finished getting all my planters and hanging baskets planted and put out (saw a hummingbird so had to get the red petunias out for it to feed from).
Now I have to transplant my tomato plants into bigger pots as it is STILL too wet to plant them in the garden (got close to 2" of rain Tuesday). Hoping it dries out enough so we can do SOME planting in the ground, even in the flower beds, by this weekend.

If it's to be, it's up to ME.

Filled all my planters with soil and then planted about half of them before it started raining (along with marble sized hail). Had to quickly move everything under cover so it wouldn't get destroyed. At least we didn't get the golf ball sized hail that some areas around us were reporting.
