We're closing this thread and moving the discussion to a new one. Please post on the new thread instead.

I've created a new thread, called "Tell us about your gardens", to replace this one. It encompases not only actually working in our gardens, but also what planning, preparation, etc types of gardening activities you are doing. And you can let everyone know what type of gardening you do, how large or small your gardens are, and what zones you live in.

We can always change the name of that thread if you have any suggestions on a better name.

I'd be happy to start a new thread and close this one. What should we call it? Gardening in 2016? Other suggestions?

Maybe we should just start another thread and call it what we want to! LOL I ordered about a dozen seed catalogs as I haven't received any, not even Park, which I get every year. Maybe it is too early but when I am ready to look, I am ready to look. Might know after two weeks of Christmas break and cold/gloom every day, the sun popped out today and the weather was beautiful. My greenhouse heated itself up all the way to 100 degrees so I will have to remember to go out and vent it in the wee hours tomorrow morning before I go to work. Hopefully I will get home a bit early tomorrow as it is only a "planning day" and can do some yardwork and planting.

The thread should have been named "what gardening did you do today?", and what you did today definitely counts as gardening.
I can't change the thread title since I'm not the one who made the original post, but I believe that was the original intent.

Not in the garden but I decluttered in the greenhouse and started seeds for Costoluto Genovese, Brandywine, Mortgage Lifter, and San Marzano tomatoes. Got to dig around for my Park catalog too.

I heard that the white pumpkin has a very hard skin and is not good for carving. They said to get the skin off is to cook it in the oven and then the skin will be easy to come off. I bought some of the white seeds to grow too. I get the heirloom ones since they will reproduce as for the hybrids they may not and I don't want GMO's

Nothing IN the garden. However, I HAVE been going through the seed catalogs and dreaming of my 2016 garden. Hubby wants to plant a bunch of different varieties of pumpkins next year - white, blue, pink, speckled, warty, as well as the usual ones we plant for carving. May have to get 9 - 20'x30' plots this year instead of just 8, in order to accommodate the extra pumpkins. Good thing they are only $6 each!

I of course want to try some different varieties of eggplants, tomatoes, peppers, and maybe other veggies too - as long as they are heirloom ones. I think you can actually find a lot more shapes and colors if you grow heirloom ones. At least it seems that way from what I'm seeing in the catalogs.

Can't wait until it's time to get some of these plants started.

We have had lots of rain for November and December, so the ground just hasn't dried out enough for me to finish up planting garlic. May have to do it anyway, just shove those cloves down into the mud and hope for the best. I had intended to dig a pit for the entire area and empty the compost bin into it, then cover with soil and plant my garlic on top, but as I said, it's been too wet this Fall to do that. Strange weather.

Got all the hanging baskets cut back and hung in the greenhouse; bagged up the patio cushions, stacked, and covered six patio chairs; emptied all the terra cotta pots and stored them in the greenhouse; emptied, cleaned, and stored the hummingbird feeders. Will finish cleaning the patio and decorate it for Christmas Saturday. One more very large fern and 8 big pots of sanseveria to move to the greenhouse before the first freeze. Hopefully, the yardman will do that for me when he comes.

Dug up my sweet potatoes now that last night's frost killed the vines. All that's left is to dig a pit in the area I'm planting garlic for next year, fill it with the contents of my compost container, and then cover it and plant the garlic!
Once that's done, I cover the whole garden with a layer of chopped up leaves and let it rest until Spring, when I can turn it over and start all over again (except for the garlic section of course).

Pulled out 1 tomato plant.

Harvested a few tomatoes.

Weeded.

Watered.

Trimmed the parsley that has gone to seed. Brought the stems into the house.

Place the tomato cage (from pulled plant) into the parsley container hoping to contain it better.

Good for you!! I wish I had cucumbers growing. We had so much rain this spring and early summer that they got powdery mildew really bad and didn't survive. I don't know if it would have been better if I'd put up a fence for them to trellis on or not. I've done it at home and they've done really well, but it seems that at the rented plots they do better when I just let them vine all over the ground.

My tomatoes and sweet potatoes came through the frost just fine. Haven't checked the eggplants closely. The sheet blew off them and the tops definitely were hurt. Have to look closer and see if any of the small eggplants are still growing.
Watered my sweet potatoes in the planters for the last time. I figure that now I'll let them dry out (it rained tonight too, though not much), and then dump out the dirt and see how well they did.

Covered the sweet potatoes, tomato plant, and eggplants still growing at home yesterday. Left them covered as it's supposed to get down to 32 again tonight. After that it is supposed to warm up to upper 60s to lower 70s during the day for the next week, with lows in the upper 40s to 50s. So they can have another week or more before we have to call gardening quits for the year.
Fence is now down at the rented plots (we have to be out by Monday) and safely stowed away for next year. All that's left is to haul a bunch of leaves over and till them in for next year - we get the same plots every year so we build up the soil as much as we can.

Nothing today for me - though hubby did go and pick lots of beans, zucchini, tomatoes, and some pumpkins while I was busy babysitting for a 2 year old. We have to get all our fencing and other garden equipment out in about 2 weeks, so after my daughter's baby shower on Sunday, we're going to be working on that. Beans are slowing down, as is everything else. Have to dig up the onions, garlic, and sweet potatoes, plus finish harvesting the rest of the gourds, pumpkins, celery, and spaghetti squash. Still have some broccoli side shoots to harvest too. After removing the fencing, a friend who owns a lawn maintenance company will come by and mow the plots down with his commercial size riding lawn mower. Hubby is going to borrow a tractor to till up the plots really deep, and then we can start putting down chopped up leaves and other organic matter for next year. If the weather cooperates, we'll till some of that in this fall too, to help it break down faster so the area isn't so wet in the Spring.
Still have veggies growing at home, but there's no deadline for getting those dug up, so they can wait until we get a frost or they die back.

Picked lots of veggies yesterday. Our 2nd planting of green beans is now producing quite well, and the original ones started blooming again when the weather got cooler, so we ended up with about 7 GALLONS of green beans. We just brought them to church services last night and gave them away, along with some celery, zucchini, spaghetti squash, sweet peppers, and eggplants.
We kept what we could use, and then share what we can't use with others.
Some plants are finished producing for the year, so it's time to start cleaning up those sections and getting them ready for next year (haul out any weeds before they go to seed, pull up the plants, till in some more organic matter (need to get over to my brother's as he has plenty of horse manure for us to use).
Great idea about saving the Zinnia seeds. We grew them this year, as well as tall marigolds (the short ones never came up, though I don't know why). I usually save marigold seeds and cosmos, but haven't saved Zinnias before. I'm sure there's some that are ready to harvest.

We do zinnias from dead heading (allow to dry thoroughly) every year. Just let them 'grey' and then pull off and sit on a paper towel to dry and then store in a ziploc bag til next spring. We always plant them in our veg patch. Ours are still happily growing :)

My zinnias were huge this year. I'm trying to harvest seed from them. Any tips on storagenor harvesting? I don't always have luck with zinnias so I'd like to plant these again. They really draw the butterflies.

We only have one peach tree and the coons get the peaches EVERY YEAR!!! The deer stripped the lower branches off years ago, so they can't get the peaches anymore emoticon

I typically lose a lot to some kind of fungus or something. It's like a clear goo that gets on a lot of the peaches. The ones who don't get it 'disappear' like our corn if we don't put the dog in the garden when it's nearly in.

We are REALLY almost done now! It has been so hot and we have had a wet summer, so that helped.

We're down to okra (from Africa, so no wonder it's still happy) and some mealy cucumbers but they've had a bumper crop year. When I heard about the cucumber recall, I was like: come out to the ranch! We'll sell them to YOU :)

We'll be tilling the detritus under very soon.

BTW it's SO wet, instead of 2 hayings, we're on about the 4th this year! That's a lot.

More watering, then cut out several volunteer trees that were growing along the fence. Picked more eggplant - they are really coming on strong right now.

Watered the veggie plot at home. Even though we got some rain this morning, it wasn't much and the ground was pretty dry.

Have fun! We're hoping to get some more weeding done at the garden plots. It rained this morning, not a lot, but we may hold off until afternoon to give it a chance to soak in first.

I have peas to pick and maybe a couple of tomato vines to yank. My stuff still looks good considering almost no rain but I owe Dear Mom most of the credit for doing the upkeep.

I wish we had peaches!
Yesterday I picked zucchini, broccoli, tomatoes, cantaloupe, cauliflower, and cucumbers (those are all but finished, but I managed to find a couple that were hiding). Need to get over and do some serious weeding. The corn patch is done, but the pumpkin vines were everywhere and made it difficult to keep the weeds in check. Now that they too are dying back, we can get in there, pull all the weeds - hopefully without having too many seeds fall on the ground - so that we can till up that patch and then work in some organic matter to get it ready for next year.

We dug up the potato bed yesterday and determined the taters had rotted in the ground. So much for that. The chard seed popped right up and look healthy but the parsnips seed is showing no signs of life. I am going to start some leeks and a couple hills of zucchini today. The bell peppers and tomatoes continue to struggle along in the heat. The new batch of cream peas and the Contender beans are starting to bloom and that's it for our house.

We got our first zucchini today. Corn is almost ready, picked a couple of plum tomatoes too. Nothing much on the other tomato plants yet. Squash, cucumbers, and melon vines are pretty small - I think it was because of too much rain. Now that things have dried up and warm temps are here, they have finally started growing.

yesterday moving 80# concrete bags... (not fun) , but also got some weeding done in neglected garden spot I had planted watermelon& tomatoes in. The deer got to both of these guys, but they are perking back up so today am going to weed this spot for about an hour or two. I now realize that this spot was just a bit to shady to plant vegies in, but live & learn.

Yesterday and today I've been watering all my planters. Forecasted rain for Sunday, and then today, never arrived. Then I need to water the garden at home later this afternoon (no watering between 11 and 4 where I live). And tomorrow we will be watering the garden plots, which means hauling water from home - several trips. No rain in the forecast until Sunday or Monday now, and everything is getting dry for a change.

My neighbor grew bell peppers from a Park's variety pack. She has one that is either purple or chocolate that has a bit of heat to it. I looked at Park's web site and they don't sell either as a stand alone pack. Does anyone have any experience with these?

Tried to put some water on it so it will stay alive. Summer peas still producing, tomatoes still blooming and setting fruit, figs falling on the ground before they get ripe. Wish we had some of the rain from a couple months ago!

Today was weeding and mulching a large flower bed. Weeding is done, but only got one load of mulch spread (we have a free pile at the park district, but you have to haul it yourself). Picked up the 2nd load, but it's going to take 6 total I fear before that one is done - and then I have to start on the next bed which never got mulched before so it is FULL of weeds!

Veggie garden at home is now almost complete. Have a small section left that I was considering planting herbs in, but hubby was getting some tomato plants from a friend so I think those are going to have to go in there and I'll have to plant the herbs in pots for this year.

Got about half way finished digging the front bed (had hoped to have it done long before now, but with all the rain, I've had to wait for the soil to dry out enough and seem to get only one bed done before it rains again). The front bed is right in front of the house. This is the 4th time I've redone it since we moved in over 20 years ago. I am choosing plants, trees, and shrubs that attract hummingbirds and butterflies, along with some in the corner that will also provide berries in the Fall for the birds.

Sounds like you got what we did yesterday! All I could do today was empty the water in the trays for the plants still waiting to get in the ground. Standing water at the rented plots, and you could hear the water squishing in the yard as you walked. At least it didn't rain any more today, sun was shining all day. But too wet. Hopefully we won't get much rain for the rest of the week, though it is in the forecast almost every day.

I picked/pulled up the broccoli today (to make room for the tomatoes) as well as the kholrabi and turnips that I planted under row covers early this spring. I planted two more tomato plants and removed slugs (yuck!) from my baby lettuce starts. The larger plants don't seem to be bothered by them, and eggshells are coming to those baby plants now... but the chickens do love their slug treats. emoticon

Got my celery, broccoli, cauliflower, onions, and beets all planted. Rented plots are almost completely done, except for planting some flower seeds along the borders of each section and putting in a few more tomato plants. Now it's just watering, weeding, and mulching left - all summer long!
Turning over the bed at home so I can plant the peppers, eggplants, carrots, and all the leftover plants and seeds that wouldn't fit in the rented plots. Lots of garlic and onions, and picked up some blue potato sets that were on clearance so planting them too (I had decided not to plant them this year, but that was before I saw them on clearance at the store. What can I say - I felt sorry for the poor things)!

Got my tomato plants in yesterday evening. That leaves the cauliflower, celery, broccoli, beets, and onion sets at the rented plots for today, and garlic, peppers, onions, beets, eggplant, and a few tomatoes to go in at home. Another ozone day here but I have the sprinklers going. Today indoors, I need to organize myself to better cope with the work world next week. Part of my plateau was the stress-eating I did last week, which came as the result of not getting enough sleep, being totally disorganized about meals, and most importantly, letting a person over whom I have no control getting to me, I can't change her hatefulness but I can change my response.

So far between today and yesterday we got the rows hilled up, and planted spaghetti squash and zucchini (corn and pumpkins were planted earlier when we had a break from the rain and they are now up). Taking a break, then going back to plant cucumbers, watermelon, cantaloupe, 4 kinds of beans, and onion sets. Supposed to rain tomorrow, so after that we'll put in all the plants - celery, broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, and sweet potatoes, plus beet seeds.
I read that celery is supposed to help repel cabbage moths, so I'm planting those in between the broccoli and cauliflower, as well as planting beet seeds in the same row. Also planting garlic between the tomato plants as it is supposed to help them too.

Ozone alert day here so won't be outdoors until late this evening. I'm in the midst of a plateau which is so irritating. I've had a lot of pain this week, done a lot of walking, taken a lot of naproxen for pain. Naproxen jacks up my blood pressure and makes me swell up like a dead pig in the sunshine. So I'm just sitting here having fresh cantaloupe and salad for lunch and vexing! Y'all have a great day.

I checked after seeing your post and had some that were ripe too! I ate them for lunch (didn't even save any for my hubby).
Today we dug along the fence at the rented plots so we can get the flowers planted (hoping the flowers as well as their scent help hide the tasty veggies inside from the 4 legged critters on the outside! Hubby wanted to till up the remaining sections of the garden one last time, so hopefully we can get those marked tonight after he gets done and get something planted before it rains again tomorrow. At least the corn and pumpkins are already planted and are coming up!

This morning I got up and tied up my tomato plants, thought ole left brain would do it for me, but that didn't happen. I enjoyed doing it. I love the smell of dirt and vegetable plants!

Got tomatoes growing and the volunteer plants from the compost bin, it looks like they're going to be grape tomatoes. YAY!

DH is planning to buy me some more raised bed kits, and build me my large compost bin, I'm so excited. emoticon

Emptied out my compost bin. 85 gallons of compost. Still have to sift it all to separate the finished compost from the rest. Pretty wet though, so it's sitting out in buckets drying overnight.

Rotated my patio pots so the tomatoes and herbs I have planted in them can get equal shares of this wonderful, delicious sun. We are picking tomatoes off the garden plants. Just a few so far but so good!

I like to think that I can harvest something everyday in this climate even if it is just fresh oregano. Today it was green onions. More to come. Got my first zucchini yesterday and grilled it with some chopped fresh basil.

Nothing in the garden but good mood today despite another rainy Saturday. I don't even remember when we have had a sunny one, it has been so long. A couple of months I think. The yellow squash and spinach seem to be loving it even if I am not. Lots of dietary slips eating fast food while the power was off, then going on a two day chip and chocolate binge. Not a big one, just a little one. I am going to weigh and assess the damage tomorrow. Right now, I am cleaning walls and getting ready to move furniture back into position.

I went to the feed store to pick up some rabbit food, and walked away having bought 2 scuppernong plants, a Scarlett and a Triumph. I have been wanting to do that for years now, but ole 'Left Brain' wouldn't buy them, and now that I have a little money coming in I decided that there was no time like the present and I did it. I was sooo excited.
Well, Ole Left Brain decided that he'd plant them for me emoticon . He did NOT plant them where I said I wanted to plant them, and he planted one under the night light out in the yard. I was so mad I could have eaten lead and spit nails, but I'm not going to discourage him, I will move on, buy something else and plant it. He made a mess but it made him happy, and while I was out there I took care of my tomato plants and to me they look marvelous, darling, they really look marvelous. emoticon

I went out after work and putted. Pulled weeds, trimmed, and dug a hole for another plant, but the timer on dinner beeped before I finished.

Garden plots are all marked and tilled. Hubby is out planting corn and pumpkins today, while I am working on getting the containers ready so I can plant the sweet potatoes in them. Depending on whether the weather holds or not, we can hopefully get the rest of the seeds planted this weekend.

I had tomatoes volunteer to grow in my mulch bed, and I offered them to a friend who said she'd come and get them, seeing that I already have a dozen tomato plants already planted. But she never came and two of the plants began to bloom, so I added some garden soil to them, and put the Epsom salt around them. I thinned out the weaker plants and tomorrow I will stake them.
This is the first garden I've had since our move 4 years ago. My husband tried growing tomatoes last year and the year before but the dogs kept making off with our green tomatoes. Lol emoticon
Most of my neighbors have raised garden beds, and I've been trying to talk my husband into for years, but he's traditional. Last year for my birthday he broke down and bought me one to just see how it would do. He's loved the results so far, and asked me yesterday what do we need to make our garden bigger. emoticon I told him, I've got plans but some things around the house need doing first.
A rain gutter would help a lot, so I can put in rain barrels. Right now I have coffee cans and old tea pitchers collecting rain water. I also want a fairly large green house built, and with 3 teenagers well, you know where our money goes first.

Pulled weeds, raked up under the trees, trimmed dead branches off the rose bushes. Have to wait until it dries up a bit before I can plant.

Got the fence posts in at the garden plots this week. Of course, then it rained before we could get the fence itself up and it's too muddy now to do that on the north and west sides! Hopefully it will dry up enough this week so we can get it done and maybe start planting next weekend
