Tried to put some water on it so it will stay alive. Summer peas still producing, tomatoes still blooming and setting fruit, figs falling on the ground before they get ripe. Wish we had some of the rain from a couple months ago!

Today was weeding and mulching a large flower bed. Weeding is done, but only got one load of mulch spread (we have a free pile at the park district, but you have to haul it yourself). Picked up the 2nd load, but it's going to take 6 total I fear before that one is done - and then I have to start on the next bed which never got mulched before so it is FULL of weeds!

Veggie garden at home is now almost complete. Have a small section left that I was considering planting herbs in, but hubby was getting some tomato plants from a friend so I think those are going to have to go in there and I'll have to plant the herbs in pots for this year.

Got about half way finished digging the front bed (had hoped to have it done long before now, but with all the rain, I've had to wait for the soil to dry out enough and seem to get only one bed done before it rains again). The front bed is right in front of the house. This is the 4th time I've redone it since we moved in over 20 years ago. I am choosing plants, trees, and shrubs that attract hummingbirds and butterflies, along with some in the corner that will also provide berries in the Fall for the birds.

Sounds like you got what we did yesterday! All I could do today was empty the water in the trays for the plants still waiting to get in the ground. Standing water at the rented plots, and you could hear the water squishing in the yard as you walked. At least it didn't rain any more today, sun was shining all day. But too wet. Hopefully we won't get much rain for the rest of the week, though it is in the forecast almost every day.

I picked/pulled up the broccoli today (to make room for the tomatoes) as well as the kholrabi and turnips that I planted under row covers early this spring. I planted two more tomato plants and removed slugs (yuck!) from my baby lettuce starts. The larger plants don't seem to be bothered by them, and eggshells are coming to those baby plants now... but the chickens do love their slug treats. emoticon

Got my celery, broccoli, cauliflower, onions, and beets all planted. Rented plots are almost completely done, except for planting some flower seeds along the borders of each section and putting in a few more tomato plants. Now it's just watering, weeding, and mulching left - all summer long!
Turning over the bed at home so I can plant the peppers, eggplants, carrots, and all the leftover plants and seeds that wouldn't fit in the rented plots. Lots of garlic and onions, and picked up some blue potato sets that were on clearance so planting them too (I had decided not to plant them this year, but that was before I saw them on clearance at the store. What can I say - I felt sorry for the poor things)!

Got my tomato plants in yesterday evening. That leaves the cauliflower, celery, broccoli, beets, and onion sets at the rented plots for today, and garlic, peppers, onions, beets, eggplant, and a few tomatoes to go in at home. Supposed to rain for the rest of the week, so I need to get it done today.

Another ozone day here but I have the sprinklers going. Today indoors, I need to organize myself to better cope with the work world next week. Part of my plateau was the stress-eating I did last week, which came as the result of not getting enough sleep, being totally disorganized about meals, and most importantly, letting a person over whom I have no control getting to me, I can't change her hatefulness but I can change my response.

Picked massive strawberries to freeze (really good crop this year) and did some weeding of small weeds starting to sprout up. I like this time of year when my weeds are still smaller than my flowers and veges and still manageable. emoticon

So far between today and yesterday we got the rows hilled up, and planted spaghetti squash and zucchini (corn and pumpkins were planted earlier when we had a break from the rain and they are now up). Taking a break, then going back to plant cucumbers, watermelon, cantaloupe, 4 kinds of beans, and onion sets. Supposed to rain tomorrow, so after that we'll put in all the plants - celery, broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, and sweet potatoes, plus beet seeds.
I read that celery is supposed to help repel cabbage moths, so I'm planting those in between the broccoli and cauliflower, as well as planting beet seeds in the same row. Also planting garlic between the tomato plants as it is supposed to help them too.

Ozone alert day here so won't be outdoors until late this evening. I'm in the midst of a plateau which is so irritating. I've had a lot of pain this week, done a lot of walking, taken a lot of naproxen for pain. Naproxen jacks up my blood pressure and makes me swell up like a dead pig in the sunshine. So I'm just sitting here having fresh cantaloupe and salad for lunch and vexing! Y'all have a great day.

I checked after seeing your post and had some that were ripe too! I ate them for lunch (didn't even save any for my hubby).
Today we dug along the fence at the rented plots so we can get the flowers planted (hoping the flowers as well as their scent help hide the tasty veggies inside from the 4 legged critters on the outside! Hubby wanted to till up the remaining sections of the garden one last time, so hopefully we can get those marked tonight after he gets done and get something planted before it rains again tomorrow. At least the corn and pumpkins are already planted and are coming up!

This morning I got up and tied up my tomato plants, thought ole left brain would do it for me, but that didn't happen. I enjoyed doing it. I love the smell of dirt and vegetable plants!

Got tomatoes growing and the volunteer plants from the compost bin, it looks like they're going to be grape tomatoes. YAY!

DH is planning to buy me some more raised bed kits, and build me my large compost bin, I'm so excited. emoticon

Emptied out my compost bin. 85 gallons of compost. Still have to sift it all to separate the finished compost from the rest. Pretty wet though, so it's sitting out in buckets drying overnight.

Nothing in the garden but good mood today despite another rainy Saturday. I don't even remember when we have had a sunny one, it has been so long. A couple of months I think. The yellow squash and spinach seem to be loving it even if I am not. Lots of dietary slips eating fast food while the power was off, then going on a two day chip and chocolate binge. Not a big one, just a little one. I am going to weigh and assess the damage tomorrow. Right now, I am cleaning walls and getting ready to move furniture back into position.

I went to the feed store to pick up some rabbit food, and walked away having bought 2 scuppernong plants, a Scarlett and a Triumph. I have been wanting to do that for years now, but ole 'Left Brain' wouldn't buy them, and now that I have a little money coming in I decided that there was no time like the present and I did it. I was sooo excited.
Well, Ole Left Brain decided that he'd plant them for me emoticon . He did NOT plant them where I said I wanted to plant them, and he planted one under the night light out in the yard. I was so mad I could have eaten lead and spit nails, but I'm not going to discourage him, I will move on, buy something else and plant it. He made a mess but it made him happy, and while I was out there I took care of my tomato plants and to me they look marvelous, darling, they really look marvelous. emoticon

Garden plots are all marked and tilled. Hubby is out planting corn and pumpkins today, while I am working on getting the containers ready so I can plant the sweet potatoes in them. Depending on whether the weather holds or not, we can hopefully get the rest of the seeds planted this weekend.

I had tomatoes volunteer to grow in my mulch bed, and I offered them to a friend who said she'd come and get them, seeing that I already have a dozen tomato plants already planted. But she never came and two of the plants began to bloom, so I added some garden soil to them, and put the Epsom salt around them. I thinned out the weaker plants and tomorrow I will stake them.
This is the first garden I've had since our move 4 years ago. My husband tried growing tomatoes last year and the year before but the dogs kept making off with our green tomatoes. Lol emoticon
Most of my neighbors have raised garden beds, and I've been trying to talk my husband into for years, but he's traditional. Last year for my birthday he broke down and bought me one to just see how it would do. He's loved the results so far, and asked me yesterday what do we need to make our garden bigger. emoticon I told him, I've got plans but some things around the house need doing first.
A rain gutter would help a lot, so I can put in rain barrels. Right now I have coffee cans and old tea pitchers collecting rain water. I also want a fairly large green house built, and with 3 teenagers well, you know where our money goes first.

I had plans to do lots of work in the garden today - so of course it is now raining! Hopefully it won't last long and maybe I can at least get my large planters done.

Pulled weeds, raked up under the trees, trimmed dead branches off the rose bushes. Have to wait until it dries up a bit before I can plant.

I did a lot of puttering. Pulled weeds, put compost mulch around thirstier plants, and some organic fertilizer on my citrus trees.

Got the fence posts in at the garden plots this week. Of course, then it rained before we could get the fence itself up and it's too muddy now to do that on the north and west sides! Hopefully it will dry up enough this week so we can get it done and maybe start planting next weekend

I emptied out my compost bin (some was done but it was so wet I couldn't sift it anyway). Then I alternated putting the compost back with layers of the dried grass and leaves I raked up yesterday and mixed it all together. Hopefully that will get it cooking again so that in a month or so most of it will be completely done.

I've been wanting berries for a long time. Our wonderful local nursery held a class on blueberries and I learned that I could grow them in a large pot. So I now have two Southern Highbush Blueberries planted in acidy mix in my alkaline desert yard!

Today I raked the leaves out of the front flower bed and front lawn. Hoping to clean out the compost bin tomorrow and mix in all the leaves and dead grass so it can all break down. Still have the side and back yards and beds to do, but that will have to wait for another day, as I don't want to get a bunch of blisters.

I even mix chopped up leaves in with the dirt in my large planters, instead of putting in all new dirt every year. That way they compost themselves and provide plant food instead of me adding compost to them. The chopped up leaves also loosen the soil so the roots can penetrate easier and grow faster.
We have a 60 foot x 80 foot plot to cover, so it takes LOTS of leaves. My kind of black (or brown) gold!

Emptied out the compost bin and sifted it. Got 20 gallons of finished compost. Also emptied the dirt out of my large planters so I could harvest the sweet potatoes growing in them. Got a 2 gallon bucket of sweet potatoes out of each planter. They were huge!! Definitely something I plan on continuing to do. So easy to harvest too since there really isn't any digging.

Yesterday we finished tearing down everything from the plots we rent from the park district. Fencing, posts, gates all torn down and hauled home. Then hubby tilled up as much of the plots as he could (still have some beans and corn producing, but now that the fence is down, the deer may take care of the beans).
Next we will be hauling leaves over - as many as we can get from friends and neighbors, and tilling them in as well, to help build up the soil for next spring.

Today we are pulling the tomato cages at the rented garden plots. We have to be out of there in 2 weeks, so it's time to start removing what we no longer need and bringing it home for the winter. Still getting beans and corn from our 2nd plantings.

Cleaned out some planters and put them away for the winter, then cleaned off the patio and put that dirt and peanut shells in the compost bin, along with the ashes from the fire pit. Picked a few tomatoes as well. Sorting through my pots and other supplies, getting rid of the ones I won't use anymore, as well as any broken items, so I'll be ready for next year.

Clean up time in the garden today. Some of the patches are done, so we are pulling any remaining weeds and the plants. Then we can till those up and start digging leaves in to get it ready for next year. Easier than having to do all of it at once.

Thank you. I forgot about diatomaceous earth, will have to try that. Has been bone dry here than we had a storm and all the ants came out.
I also have some chalk, so it would be worth a try, was using dish soap. it kills them but does not make them stay away.

I read that ants aren't supposed to cross a chalk line, so that's one way to keep them out of the house at least. BUT - my friend's daughter was over last week and we were drawing chalk pictures on the driveway and I saw an ant walk right over the chalk lines as if they weren't even there. So I have some doubts as to whether that really works or not.

In the garden, I've used diatomaceous earth, but you would have to reapply that after it rains. You can also use it in and around the house, but it's better if you don't breathe that in or put it where pets will get into it. Not a poison, so pests can't build up a tolerance to it. Works for other household pests too.

Potted up some begonias to bring in and grow in a window this winter. Repotted some indoor plants and picked tomatoes. Not many left on the vine now.

Harvested 6 bushel baskets of spaghetti squash, 1/4 bushel of beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, and over 30 pumpkins. Late batch of corn should be ready for picking in about a week. Getting ready to clean up some sections of the garden that are about done, like the cucumber, spaghetti squash, and zucchini sections, and the first section of corn (once all the pumpkins are out of there too). Tomatoes are winding down.

Pulled 2 black garbage bags full of weeds. Quit when I suddenly got a strong whiff of skunk! No sign of the critter, and they are supposed to be nocturnal, but I didn't want to take any chances!
