Sometime within the next few days, I need to get out there and do some pruning (broken branches on my fruit tree(s)) and pull up the dead stuff. Not sure there's much I can do this time of year with regard to planting anything new right now. I live in Florida and it's just too darned hot, although I have planter boxes in the shade.

I'm putting in a fire pit (for the winter) and need to do some work on clearing the space and putting down a foundation. I have to paint my old boat, first, though.

I used to say, It is what it is, but now I say, "If you don't like it, change it!!"

3 things I would like to accomplish today in the garden:

1.get some black eyed peas picked
2. some weeding done around the watermelons
3. got a square foot garden bed I need to put some manure/compost in and let it sit till my fall garden.

I also have to muck out the sheep and chicken pens-they aren't too messy, but it keeps me busy!

3. I have lilacs to move to continue the row in front of the windbreak, south side as I add rhodos to the north side.
4. Also adding lilacs along one side of my vegetable garden
5. Making a fence around my blueberries
6. Re-doing the garden fence
etc. etc. keeping busy and I have tons of pruning deadwood and those rascally brambles to pull so I am keeping busy

Nothing but some weeding as we just had a couple days of rain so the ground is too wet.

I need to break up the clods better and get rid of old roots, add the new compost/top soil, and plant the transplants and the seeds that need to be started outside.

I also need to start some herbs in pots and some flowers in some long planters.

I transplanted a strawberry into a larger pot today.

1. Added 50 x19 feet to my existing garden.
2. Amending each hole or row this year in the new addition especially good with manure and lime.
3. Started yellow and red raspberry patch at the end of new addition so the deer wouldn't eat the tops off them any more. It is fenced in.
4. Replenish my cellar with my produce, it is looking a little bare.

Since the garden plots are still too wet to plant, my list of tasks to complete are:
1) transplant all the tomatoes, eggplant, and peppers into larger pots
2) get soil for the hanging baskets and deck planters and flowers and get these planted
3) Start watermelon and cantaloupe in peat pots in hopes that by the time they are ready to transplant, the garden plots will have dried out enough for us to do so!

Moved the 4 delphineums & 2 coriolus'.
Weeded
Showed husband which ones were weeds LOL
Cleaned out the dying tulip bulbs - they were gross!! Mushy wet & had little white worms (maybe 1/4" long). Not sure if the rotting bulbs attracted them or the worms caused the bulbs to rot??

1. Get more logs, brush, and organic matter for "Hugelkultur" I will eventually do a blog on this. If you don't know what it is check it out on Google or YouTube

2. Work more on grouping plants, and less "rows"

3. Grow massive amounts of greens and then finish building my solar dryer, (again check out YouTube) on how to build one for basically free.

Weather permitting, this week I hope to:
1) get garden plots from park district marked out and get seeds planted
2) Dig rest of leaves into garden bed at home and start planting there as well
3) purchase flowers for the planters and hanging baskets and get them planted

Sorry 1234mom, I admit that when I lived in Oklahoma for a few months when I was younger I missed Michigan. It's only unfortunate for me now because I've had my eye on a little place in Kentucky for a while and just can't seem to make it work. It is beautiful here, just not where I wanna be. I agree that the west side is beautiful. I live between Detroit and Flint, the 2 biggest crime areas in the U.S. That has a lot to do with why I want to leave.

If you always do what you've always done,,,you'll always get what you've always got.

ISEARK - since when is it unfortunate to be from and living in Michigan?! I was born and raised there and have missed it since moving all over the Midwest with my DH. There is no place like the west side of MI with its bountiful orchards, berries and YOU Pick places. There are abundant farm stands to pick up what didn't make it in your own garden. The sandy soil there grows everything when amended with leaves from it's abundant forests. And, when you are done sweating in the garden find a lake to go drop into to cool down. Ah, my memories of Michigan are strong and living in Indiana can really bite. I will give my area a thumbs up for the slightly earlier planting time and long flat roads through miles of soy bean and corn to ride my bike on.

Iseark, I guess we all have our challenges, no matter where we live! I think using wood chips would go a long way to help you with the moles, though. Wood chips wouldn't attract so many delicious grubs as the grass does plus you won't be watering it. Dry soil isn't so attractive for earthworms either so maybe that will be a win-win for you, hope so.

Wised-up: perhaps you'd consider starting a thread about growing in the shade....

Wised-up: re: sun/shade:
I saw a gardening show on PBS in the last week. A man in a wheel chair was doing a lot of container gardening, but everything was under his trees in dappled shade. And his vegetables were beautiful.

He had created what i thought was a decorative fence along the tree-lined drive in to his property. Used 4 inch diameter PVC, pounded them in the ground and filled them with dirt. Each post had something planted in it. Absolutely amazing!!

In another area, he had pots filled to the rim with veggies, placed in groups on the grass under his trees. Never seen anything like it before.

Ugh forcing me to actually think things through? Bah! Hahaha.
Ok, here goes..
1) Get some flowers and herbs going around the freggies and front porch, especially some basil and marigold near the tomatoes
2) Fertilize and/or trim the mango tree after I figure out when to do what
3) Figure out where the armadillos are getting in, hunt for a way to keep them and the raccoon out

I'm in Michigan, unfortunately. Born and raised but wishing for a way out, lol. Moles are really bad around here. I'll have to get a few traps I guess. Hate to do it that way but they are sooooo destructive!

Well no because we don't have moles. We do have armadillos though! I've never had one but they may do similar things, dig up your yard looking for worms and grubs. I have dogs in the backyard and they keep all the other critters out. Where do you live? I'm in Texas.

I'm a little worried about moles because I know I'll have more worms. Do you have any trouble with them in your chips?

Iseark - I'm with you on that, I have a good portion of my backyard covered in wood chips. I do have to weed occasionally and add more but it's so much easier!

Hi, new poster here. I'm planning on making a bunch of raised beds from reclaimed pallets. I want to grow a lot of greens and try to eat raw all summer. We'll see how that goes. I also buy new things to try each year. This year one is Walking Stick kale. I'm also going to cover all my grassy area in the back yard with woodchips. No more mowing back there for me!

So much to do, but here's 3:

Work on potted plants-divide, repot, add soil, etc.
Make or fashion a trellis for the peas
Plant bean seeds in raised beds
