Yes, I loved AVM and all her other books too! I have a sister who works with sustainable agriculture at the university level and the things I learn from her are always enlightening. It's amazing how little that is going on in favor of whole organic foods reaches the masses. Barbara's book and experiment have done much towards these efforts, but of course not nearly enough.

I think Michelle Obama's efforts to fight obesity are helping too. Let's keep them in the White House....

I LOVED Animal Vegetable Miracle when I read it, and it inspired me to start making my own cheese. And I've added Slow Money to my books to read list.

As for the government, if we want legislators who vote against the big money interests like Monsanto or ADM, we're going to have to start talking to our neighbors enough to balance out the advertising budgets of the big money candidates. The challenge is that it takes time to grow your own food, to research the fair trade producers, to cook everything from scratch, AND to talk to the neighbors. We've got a lot of work to do...

We read it as a church project a couple of summers ago. It is almost all positive, and often funny. Not much corporate finger pointing, but the story of a journey to do better.

I looked at Barbara's family picture on her website. Gosh the last time I saw Camille she was about 3. It's been a long time since she's been to Carlisle, Ky.

She woke up one morning and threw away all her excuses...

Thanks for the book tips, but I get so upset when I read what agribusiness is doing to our food and water. It's too bad that the people who should read the books and articles, (like our gov't representatives) don't. We need a politician who is a champion for organics and local farmers.

I'm reading "Slow Money: Investing as if Food, Farms, and Fertility Mattered" right now, by Woody Tasch. It's about food more than it's about money! He's speaking at a conference in Ohio in February, so I wanted to know more about it. Really interesting. You can google his web page.

I haven't read that book by Barbara Kingsolver. Her parents live right down the road from me. She rarely comes to town. I think I'[ll check it out.

Yes, I've read it. Fantastic. I love how her whole family participated in writing it. Gives lots of good perspective. Did you read Michael Pollan's Omnivore's Dilemma? That's good, too!

Has anyone read Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver?

I've just started it, and it has really opened my eyes about how our food supply is being manipulated and makes me feel even better about my decision to grow my own veggies.

I have seen women looking at jewelry ads with a misty eye and one hand resting on the heart, and I only know what they're feeling because that's how I read the seed catalogs in January.
