This article is about how certain "Organic" foods contain as much as 100% GM grains and how corporations are trying to get regulations changed to relax the requirements for the "Organic" label. It also provides a link to Cornucopia who is fighting the corpporate lobbyists at the upcoming USDA vote. You can take action and print out a proxy letter for them to take protesting the changes.

That article was written back last November but it has info that I didn't even realize. I usually just blame Monsanto. It makes me want to start stockpiling seeds (moreso than I do already!).

Protests have been popping up in all cities modeled after "Occupy Wallstreet". Anyone can go and protest anything. You just have to appear and be willing to get up on your soapbox and talk. Make others aware of what's happening! If I were younger and not disabled I would. All I can do is write letters, to which I never get an answer.

Yep, I'm a Move On member also lol...yep, the grassroots way is our only recourse...Noam is a Linguist professor at MIT...he's been lecturing for years about the big corporation's influence on government (pffft, today, big corps ARE the gov't)...his lectures are available on the web...

I agree Pixie. We are Michael Moore fans too, but I don't know of Noam Chomsky. Obviously I have lots to learn. Move On has organized a protest in my town for Wednesday. I have a late meeting at work, but will try to at least show up for a few minutes. I put in a lot of volunteer hours to get rid of our worthless congresswoman in 2008, but now we have a tea bagger who's declared war on women and the middle class. Big oil has him in their back pocket already. He has got to go!

We should all be calling our representative's offices regularly and monitoring the legislation they support and how they vote.

Maybe this "energy crisis" will backfire on them. If more people think green and start buying locally it could put a big dent in corporate agriculture. We can always hope!

Hey Carbo...
The stuff you mention sounds as if it's out of a Crichton novel, and I'm SO not surprised...Kissenger, Cheney, Rice, Bush...all part of "that crew"...puleeze, don't get me started lol...we need to do something tho, things are only gonna get much worse...I'm a huge fan of Michael Moore (who's views on the middle class being crushed are so on target), and Noam Chomsky...this country is run by the corporations, and chunk by chunk, we're losing our liberties...

By the early 80's we were in college on the GI Bill. My husband did a paper on propaganda and got so depressed that he never finished it. It's even worse now than it was back then!

Facebook and Twitter helped topple governments in the Middle East, so now Apple is trying to patent a chip that will turn off cameras on phones. They say it's to prevent people from taking video at concerts, but governments will get the most benefit. Did you know that in some states it's illegal to video police even if they are committing a crime? You will go to jail and they won't be prosecuted.

We definitely need a spark to get people motivated to protest. Nothing will change until we do.

Remember, nobody can go back to the very beginning and make a brand new start, but anyone can start here and make a brand new end.

I was working in a hardware store in the early 80s and the gas situation was bad and a customer said during that crisis when he came home from Vietnam the tanker were piled up in the harbor and not being unloaded, totaly manufactured as I don't think things are as bad now as they make out

That is creepy. I found Henry Kissinger's 1974 Plan for Food Control Genocide: www.schillerinstitute.org/food_for_p
ea
ce/kiss_nssm_jb_1995.html

I was a cryptologist in the Navy in 1974 and monitored Kissinger's travel. Remember the oil crisis back in 1974? We observed Kissinger flying into Havana and then weeks later saw oil tankers coming into US ports empty, filling up and then unloading that oil in Cuba! Oil crisis....it was manufactured with the aid of our government. Could have gone to prison for saying anything about it back then, but now the statute of limitations has run out.

We need to take to the streets and demonstrate, march, strike, whatever we have to do to get SOME modicum of power back to the people...trouble is, everyone is spaced out on fast food, junk food, twitter, facebook and shopping...Is it a coincidence that there hasn't been huge demonstrations in this country since the Vietnam debacle and the rise in fast food places? Interesting...read this quote recently...

Big pharma is now gaining power in every country in the world. They're testing and manufacturing products in third world countries and their influence is changing laws in developed countries to eliminate natural and herbal products.

We are definitely screwed!

Yep...if memory serves, I think they mentioned that in the doc Food Matters...there's a protest walk planned for Oct, beginning in NYC and winding up in DC to push for GMO labeling on food...we're woefully behind the Europeans in making these b*stard corporations accountable for all the food manipulations...it's sickening...

That is why we have to have a Govt agencies that try and keep up with the problems. Of course then there are some congressmen or administrators (with big $$$ constituents) that will stick their nose in the business of the agencies and tell them to back off. I really think our legislators can be out of control.

Isn't it too bad it had to come down to a lawsuit?!? Why can't people just do what's right?

I agree Sharjopaul - I love the idea of taxing junk food. There is so little support given to organic or natural farmers. I discovered that fruit growers in Iowa can't even buy crop insurance..... ARGHH!!!

As far as I know, the following foods are the biggest GMO crops right now:

Corn
Soybeans
Zucchini

I stay AWAY from any of the above if they're not organic...check your vitamin/supplement/protein shake labels...lots of times, soy lecithin is used in these products!

Do a Google search for GMO foods and you'll get a bunch of info...

1234MOM is right when she asks what organic farmer has the $$$ to go up against these large producers. Consider supporting the organizations that brought the suit (you can donate to one or find the names of the others at the link below).
familyfarmers.org/?p=258

And if, like me, you'd like to vote against GMOs with your grocery dollar, right now that's really hard because the GMOs aren't labeled. Consider pestering the USDA to require labeling, or your legislator to pass a law requiring it.

With the talk about taxing junk food, maybe they should include in that food produced by the addition of all these chemicals that cause pollution of the soil, water and air and human beings. If the true costs of these things were reflected in what people had to pay for them, organically produced foods would be the cheaper option.

I believe they can continue to give antibiotics to chicken but can't give them growth hormones.

It's great that a precedent is set to sue Monsanto. Our water is becoming so contaminated.

The beef and hog producers add way too many antibiotics. The FDA is supposed to have some control over this but the producers are not totally honest on this.

I think they've stopped adding antibiotics to chicken feed, but not sure about beef. Does anyone know if the FDA still allows them to add arsenic to chicken feed? Not only does that harm workers, but it contaminates ground water as well. Who knows what the long term damage will be from eating that chicken.

The problem is patents. The greatest profit is in a patented product and they can't patent natural products for the most part. We're seeing the effects of unregulated capitalism.

I'd like to see less indescriminant use of antibiotics. This is wreaking havoc right down the food chain.

Great start!
If the companies and farmers and meat producers would put 10% of the effort into producing healthy food as they do into p0roducing products that pollut our food and environment, we could produce enough huealthy food to feed ourselves and live much better lives. Plus those companies that produce the poisons could be producing organic products to help with that.

That is great news, but I'm cautiously optimistic. Will this eventually end up in the supreme kangaroo court where I'm sure it would be overturned?
