Just getting the garden cleaned up. Baskets , nets and all the things that need to be put away. Nice weather to be out working.

I am a very easy going gal that loves people and wants to know as many as I can. I want to make new friends so I can enjoy more of life. When people get to 55 or 60 there are some that think life should be over but guess what it is just beginning. Maybe 50 years ago it was over but not now people are living longer and working in their 70's. I would have been if I didn't have leukemia and it does not stop me but I have good days and bad, so being home if I need rest, I rest, at work I couldn't do

Morning! Spent 2 hours in gardens EARLY this morning. Finally got those blueberries, peonies and daylilies in the ground...Had to wait until freezing so the yellow jackets didnt sting me again! Had enough fun (NOT) spending time in the emergency ward at the hospital on Saturday!Allergic to all stinging insects! Have to take meds for next 3 days.

I'm finishing up my summer garden, planted some peas this morning, probably a too early, but this is fall break when I have time to do it. My plants are so confused, we had heavy rain last week, and it was 95 degrees at noon today.

Sorry about your fall, Loverofanimals-hope you mend wuickly.

I'm digging up the last of the parsnips today and will can them tomorrow. Our latest planting of lettuce is just popping up - hope we can harvest some before it gets too cold.

A little delay for me...I fell last week while out walking and broke my left wrist; sprained my right arm. Luckily, most of my garden is done. I still have swiss chard, but that will be OK for a while. I still have time to pick more. Just can't clean up at the moment (typing is OK per my Dr).

I have been using Sparkpeople since 2005. I LOVE SPARKPEOPLE!

Today I harvested 15 butternut squash. Gave some to neighbors. Washed them with a weak bleach solution and they will get put in the cool basement until needed.

What's your favorite squash recipe...mine are soups and squash/kale risotto. Now that's healthy!

We had frost late last week and into the weekend that ended my zucchini and green bean crop for the year. Luckily I covered the tomatoes well enough. Hope to get another week or so out of those before every night gets frosty. Sigh....

Harvesting from our community garden plot every day now - cukes, tomatoes, potatoes, beans, onions. I've canned a lot already - beans, pickles, potatoes, peas and I've got enough tomatoes, onions and peppers to can a batch of salsa tomorrow. We're going to eat well this winter!

Wow, seems like I've been away from this site and the teams forever! My garden kept me so busy this summer that I didn't have time for much of anything else. Now I only have tomatoes and some eggplant and tons of peppers (mostly cayenne). Luckily, it is starting to slow down now and it is time to start planning for my fall garden. Planted turnips this past weekend and plan to plant some radishes and then perhaps broccoli and brussel sprouts when the weather gets a tad cooler.

Great to be back! Have an awesome day!

I so wish we had zucchini! We've consistently had bad luck with zucchini and summer squash.
Still though we have loads of tomatoes starting to be ready, a handful of okra every few days, eggplants are starting to produce, blue hubbard squash has two squashes. Bell peppers are producing slowly, swiss chard, onions. Did have brussel sprouts but the dang cabbage worms are having their way with them. That's okay BT is on it's way. Same thing with the cabbage. :(

It is great to get back to my garden after a 3 week road trip. Tomatoes are ripening, basil is huge, have to cut back blossoms. My son who was caretaking didn't notice my cukes, so I've lost those. He also ignored the zucchini, but I think that will survive. Plenty of peppers, too.

I also like to use zucchini to make quick bread, cake, bars, stir fry..... I'm going to have to look for the slaw recipe. That is one I haven't tried. emoticon

I canned 5 qts. tomatoes yesterday and started frantically searching for something else to do with my zucchinis. These things are like a horror movie...one day they are too small and the next day they are like baseball bats. I have stuffed them with a ground turkey mixture and poured spaghetti sauce over them and baked them, and that was awesome. I have more pickles than I know what to do with, so after doing some googling I found out I can make a zucchini slaw (which I made last night with no mayo and it was awesome), and on Spark recipes I found some shredded zucchini recipes which I am going to try. I also have cucumbers coming out my ears and I have made enough pickles to supply half of Georgia so I think I'd better hold off on that.

I just got back from vacation, too. Went to LA for my youngest sons wedding, about time' he's 29. I told him when he was very small he should wait until he's 30 to be settled a bit. Who would have figured that he had every listened to a word I said. Anyway my garden was in good shape when I got home, I pile grass clipping around my plants to deter weeds and it works for me.

I just finished spending a couple hours in there and I'm only about half way done. My small ant problem also turned into a big one by the time I got home. They were not so happy with me disrupting their perfect weedy paradise. I'll attempt another battle of me v. ants and weeds tomorrow. I can't wait to have my pretty garden back.

I'm so sad. I just got back from a 3 week vacation. I had a neighbor "garden-sitting" but apparently he didn't do much. I came back to find I have lost all of my cucumber and squash plants...and gained a jungle full of weeds. My neighbor managed to pick me 2 tomatoes but I'm pretty sure that is all he did. Haha! I guess gardens don't take vacations...it is amazing what can happen in 3 weeks!

we have NOT had a Lot of rain and that is hurting ... thankfully the hubby has his rain barrels that he siphons water out of, but when it's NOT raining, it gets hard to have water in the barrels. however, we are starting to get some Tomatoes. so, we'll be eating LOTS of tomato & cucumber sandwiches. and we have an abundance of Yellow (my fav) and Zucchini squash. I've made some soup, squash patties w/sour cream & hot sauce, (those were really good) some pan fried, some hollowed out and baked, but I'm starting to get Tired of it. I'll probably give some away to the girls @ our Local Library and then make some bread with it. The last two weeks I was on a Beet kick but w/no rain, they're not getting very big. :( ...

best of Luck 2 the rest of You!

We've had lots of rain too, but just after putting plants in and other things sprouted, I sprinkled preen weed preventer and am having little problems with weeds. I have spread grass clippings around my plants to keep weeds down and to keep moisture in the ground for when it gets hot and dry later on.

I bought a bottle of red pepper flakes and one of garlic and pepper. I think I'll try sprinkling them around the garden to reinforce the forks. I'll need to have a spray for the tomato plants in my newer garden. They are in the corners and are easily accessible. I have one little watermelon growing. I can't wait.

An animal grabbed one of my eggplants. The plastic forks have deterred them as it only got the one nearest the edge. I'll have to get some cayenne pepper and see if I can protect the other one. The forks must be working since the animals haven't gotten my tomatoes yet, although I've been trying to harvest them before they get too ripe.

My granddaughter picked our first jonquil today. Soon the garden will be covered with them.
The pea sees I planted have shoots and now I will have to make room for them!

I just got in from the garden since it was starting to rain. I did manage to get through the entire vegetable garden with the wheel hoe so at least the middles are looking good. If we ever get more than a day or two of nice sunny weather I need to use a hoe and do some hand weeding. Everything is growing though but it is far behind usual because of the cool weather.

My tiny cucumbers are growing but the leaves are getting eaten by something. Can't see any bugs but the leaves are yellowing and have holes in them. Any ideas?

Also I have a huge problem with a vining weed in my perennial garden. This is even choking off my cone flowers so it is really powerful. Not sure what it is....any idea on controlling this?

There are two eggplants getting bigger every day, one tomato plant is giving quite a few cherry tomatoes, many of the other plants are looking good. It looks like I just might get some yellow squash after all.

At the moment, earwigs abound. They got our strawberries and new squash plants. I'm new at organic gardening and I'm looking for ways to tame the bugs. All suggestions will be tried.

Yes I have heard that about dandelions too. One of these days I will try them. I just came in from weeding, when I close my eyes I see Bindweed. At least we have had so much rain that they came out fairly easily.

We've got a lot of bind weed, too KERSTIN814. I've read dandelions are nutritious but haven't tried them myself. emoticon

I have swiss chard that I harvest a couple leaves at a time to juice, but my goodies that are growing now are:

persian cucumbers, punta banda tomatoes, san marzano, black krim, mr. stripey, a couple of bush tomatoes (in barrels), jalapeno, red/yellow/purple peppers (still small plants), corn, yellow squash and zucchini.

My plants are just now flowering and have small veggies growing on them. I started everything from seed so it is so exciting to see everything growing!

I have a Celebrity and a Roma tomato that are turning orange on their way to red. I'm getting flowers on nearly every tomato plant now. I have some very small yellow squash and I'm salivating as I wait for them to grow. I need to harvest some Kale and Swiss Chard.

I love zucchini squash! Yellow is good, too. emoticon

Our garden is a little behind. Everything is coming up but nothing ready to harvest yet. The okra, tomatoes and cucumbers are growing the fastest so I hope to be picking some fresh veggies soon.

Happy Memorial Day weekend to you and yours! emoticon

I went to check the yellow squash and I picked 3 and then I looked closely at the next squash and boy, was I surprised to find to 3 huge zucchini squash. They must have been about 4 inches around and 12-14 long. I thought they may be too tough. We have had lots of rain this past week. When I cut one of them up to eat with some salsa, I found that the zucchini was quite tender and delicious.

Maybe I will get energetic and make some zucchini bread tomorrow. Checking out all the vegan zucchini recipes tonight. Now I just wish our air conditioner was on and then heating up the kitchen to bake wouldn't be so tough.

On a good note, the house will smell wonderful as the bread bakes. Yummo! I will have something to share with friends. emoticon

Have a nice Memorial weekend Sparke People!
