How wonderful Jen. I love to share things from my garden with friends but have never had a stranger stop by.

I had a funny thing happen yesterday.

So lately we've been having a fair amount of proselytizers from various faiths come to the door. I am not a religious person (in fact, I am an atheist) but I certainly don't begrudge others their faith. Plus - it gives me a chance to talk to people who believe differently than I might - which is always interesting.

Anyway, a couple of weeks ago, a middle aged guy came to the door. We spoke, he admired my garden, etc. He asked if he could bring his wife by sometime because he had never seen a garden like mine in Phoenix (gardens that the rest of the US takes for granted are "challenging" here in the desert). So I said "sure". Well they showed up yesterday and had an awesome time. They harvested lettuce and carrots and petted some hens and picked some flowers. The encounter left us both feeling honored and part of a greater community and I think that's pretty darn special.

Gardens are pretty fabulous for so many reasons. It would be hard to be at war in a garden...

Oh, I'm so excited now! Hubby and I harvested our radishes (super spicy!) but that's all so far. We've got some beans popping up, can't wait until those are ready! And some pretty big tomatoes, looking good! Our mango tree took a bad beating with the storm a few weeks ago, and last year with the freezes, poor thing. Still has some mangoes on it, though, so I'm hoping for at least a small crop this year!
This group just makes me want to go out and garden some more!!

I'm looking forward t rain later this day and evening. Ground will be soften enough to make it easier to pull stuff out and go right in the compost. The area still needs a little bit more clearing & it helps it will be cooler on Tues to do this!

I agree! In addition to the sense of accomplishment, the vine ripened foods are so much tastier. I also like knowing that I have gone really "local" and perhaps saved some fossil fuels in the process as well.

I was working in my yard today (not actually gardening though) and stopped to look at all the work hubby and i have done in the past 1.5 yrs since we moved here. It really is beautiful and we are so lucky to have the land and the time to indulge our passion.

Thanks for reminding us to stop and smell the beautiful (figurative) roses we are all growing.

Bo - I saw the snow you guys got - it IS tricky weather! My remaining cool season crops don't know whether to bolt or make new leaves! (Bolt, baby, bolt - make some seeds for next year!)

Yes it is Jen! I just got through starting seeds for artichokes, mustards & collard greens, Green onions, cantaloupes, Green beans, morning glories & wildflowers. I only stopped when I ran out of starter pots. I too found myself smiling as I recalled dining off my garden last year and also the shock when I went into the stores to see how much the same things cost...

We have a long growing season here in New Orleans I did not have any success last year with watermelons or tomatoes, but I am going to attempt again in my sophmore year.

BTW for anyone if you see drawers with no home, they are a perfect size for starter pots/ I also use a metallic marker to write the day and what it was in the pots. I won't make the same mistake I made in some last year!

Its a wonderful feeling of pride....Knowing that you grew whatever it is....from a seed or tiny plant...there's no harmful residue on it....And you can offer some to a neigbour!! emoticon emoticon

GJ - I was born in Ogden! How funny. I'm sorry but UT still has the BEST peaches I've ever eaten!! And some of the most amazing roses.

It is great that you can garden year round. It will be too cold in Ogden to plant my garden for at least another month.

It's an overcast, drizzly day here in Phoenix - temps around 64 degrees (very odd since last week we hit 100!) I decided to do some "batch" cooking for the coming week.

I was outside pulling carrots for carrot muffins and hoping that the hens had laid another egg because I wanted to double the recipe....when suddenly I was overcome by a wonderful sense of well-being and contentment.

There I stood - slightly damp - a huge handful of bright orange carrots with gorgeous full tops hanging from one hand. I surveyed the yard thinking about all the wonderful food I'd eaten from this small patch of earth in the heart of a desert city. There tucked under some nasturtiums, was the discarded peel of a tangelo I had eaten yesterday while pruning the citrus hedge. I was still savoring the flavor of some smaller carrots that I had eaten while pulling others. Then there was the newly planted eggplant bed which reminded me of the enormous amount of spinach gleaned from that bed just days ago - the last of that crop. Some of that spinach is in a crustless quiche baking right now (with more backyard eggs, of course!) Then there was the delight at discovering 4 small purple bell peppers coyly hiding under a skirt of leaves. Tomato blossoms are thick on the plants and some tiny fruit is beginning to form. And the butter lettuce heads waiting to be harvested for a sweet, crunchy salad.

This little yard has helped feed me, my family, friends and neighbors (many are struggling here in AZ). I felt proud and thankful for this little patch of land. And joyful that I get to cook with such abundant, flavorful , local food! How fun and rewarding is gardening?!
