r.e growing raspberries. I have found these super easy to grow in Iowa (zone 5). They are fairly drought hardy although you'll get a better yield if you water them from the rain barrel. I have mine in a raised bed so they don't spread all over the place. They really don't take much care - just cleaning out the dead canes and cutting them back at the beginning of the growing season.

Yummy!

Keep moving those tomatoes if you can. You should also know that peppers and eggplant are from the same family as tomatoes so don't put those in the same spot either. While I'm at it...potatoes suffer from the same blight too. I have 5 raised beds and rotate my tomatoes around but have found that it I want to plant these others I don't have enough room so I have 'found' space in my flower gardens for my tomato teepees and they do well and look good too. I usually plant 12 - 16 plants so that easily takes up two boxes.

Thanks Josephine. I think I'll replace some of the dirt and add plenty of organic stuff. It's a raised bed and the sunlight in that spot is perfect for tomatoes. My other raised beds aren't as ideal and are more easily marked by my very tall greyhound. I think the rest of the beds are going to have lots of flowers unless I find a way to block him and still allow access.

Ellen from what I have read you aren't suppose to plant tomatoes in the same spot every year. I did last year and my plants didn't do well. That being said my neighbor always planted his tomatoes in the same spot every year and he always had an abundant harvest. So I don't know what the answer is to that. Maybe if you add enough nutrients every year it doesn't matter. This year I am going to plant on the opposite side of the garden. Not very helpful I know.

The last couple of years have been tough for almost everything in Colorado. I'm not going to plant much this year as I expect to have a battle with the new dogs.

The one thing I've considered is raspberries. Does anyone have tips on how best to grow them? We're currently in a drought, have been through some grueling interviews lately, finally got a job, so gardening has been on the backburner.

I would like to know too. I wasn't successful last year with tomatoes, but I think I started way too late in the year for here.

Thanks for the links. I bookmarked them and I think I will do some herbs on the window sill.

Does anyone ever plant tomatoes in the same spot every year? I don't have room to rotate my plants.
