I have found that tansy works quite well in repelling ants. Also baking powder gets rid of them in about a week. For a luring concoction mix baking powder and sugar. Some people use talcum powder. I don't know if salt will kill them, but it sure gets rid of fleas!!!! (In the house that is, I would not want to put it in the garden.)

I don't know too much about aphids except I have heard they are real pests and detrimental to plants. I use Young Living peppermint essential oil to deter ants. You can make a solution of distilled water and peppermint eo and spray it around the roses.
I have ants - not so much in the spring, but by summer - they have aphid farms all over the roses. Stresses the roses out and they've all got that black leaf virus. The roses are beautiful and well established, some are truly old fashioned - which the bees seem to love, some over 20 years old - so I'm not to the point (quite yet) where I'm ready to sacrifice the roses.
Advice please - how do you control ants, while still being organic?
