My children drink is on occasion. They have a mix of water, juice, and fruit smoothies. I would like to cut it back even more when we are on the road traveling.

Regarding soda - basically, No. Only in rare cases. Water and skim milk are the rule at home, and juice or flavored milk once per day only.

Regarding exercise for kids - we just try to encourage activity/play. Our 12 year old is playing football and we sometimes suggest he workout a little to enhance his performance, but we keep it up to him. We are big exercisers, so we are setting the example that should pay off in the long run.

Veggies - yes, our kids eat veggies. We follow the 2 bite rule as well, and I try to offer new recipes for the veggies that keep their interest. My 9 year old loves a brussel sprout recipe I make and asks for it lately! We also strongly encourage, but don't require them to eat their veggies first at dinner - I tell them when you are hungry they will taste the best to you, and they have found that is true.

My favorite exercise machine is the elliptical, but I prefer to exercise outdoors. I only use the machines when pressed for time (we have one at home) or the weather is bad.

Very rarely. They drink 100% juice or kool-aid if we have it or juice made from the hibiscus leaves.

Generally, No. But on the rare occasion, they can have a few drinks of Root Beer or Orange pop when my husband gets it. But they really prefer Capri Sun juices or "flavored" water (which is Propel or Crystal Light)

My daughter and I are overweight. A few years ago I had her tested for diabetes, she was negative but the doctor ran extra tests. We found out that her cholestrol was higher than mine!! She was only four!!! She is now on a program to 'grow into her weight' and is doing good. My niece is five now and weighs more than my daughter,7(who is still overweight). I talked with her mother about it, but she didn't seem to mind. All I know to do is express health concerns and pray for the best.

I'd say my favorite is probably an exercise bike. I typically do the bulk of my time at the gym on it when I have a membership. Its because I can go longer. Treadmill gets boring and the elliptical which I do love kills the heck outta my legs.

MEWIEGELE, I'm not sure there is a good way to educate kids that aren't with you on a regular basis ... but this is what I do with the neighborhood kids and nieces and nephews - simply let them see me having fun eating healthy foods with lots of fruits and vegetables. If they ask questions I answer with correct information without making it seem like I'm putting down their parents for not eating the same way. Most of the time the kids will ask for a snack that I don't keep in the house and I simply tell them, that "I don't keep that sort of thing in the house because it isn't good for us, would you like a ..... or a .....?"

I have some friends whose kids will come spend the night with my kids and those kids will eat whatever I put on their plate without complaint (it wasn't always like that though!) but yet if their mom makes the same thing they pitch a fit and won't eat it.

I have a niece that is extremely heavy. Her family eats horrendously. She knows the right way to eat and can't wait to eat like this all the time. She has simply bided her time until she could graduate high school (though finding ways to make healthier choices now that she's older - which has let her lose 50 pounds alone!!!). Cause once she is out on her own and can make the better choices without *having* to eat the unhealthiness she is served then she'll really be able to make progress. She always whispers to me when I hug her good-bye ... "I can't wait to lose this weight and be a Marine like you Aunt Nini. You just watch, I'm gonna do it." and I tell her "I know you are baby girl, I know you are!"

So it can be done, you just have to find opportunities to educate in a way that doesn't sound like it's educating and doesn't sound like you are calling them or their parents bad for not eating the same way.

I have a question:

My 2 nieces and 1 BIL are all obese. It breaks my heart so severely. How do you educate children on healthy eating habbits when they arent your childre? No one wants to upset the child or parents, but if we stand back and do nothing then arent we contributing to the problem?

Its not just about weight, its about setting goals!

Machine??? Do bikes count as machines lol? I don't use what we typically refer to as exercise machines for a variety of reasons so my DD's bike, my running shoes, and my swim suit will have to suffice as my machines :D

Swimming is definitely a favorite in my house too. In the summer dd and I will go every evening about 4-5 pm. She started swimming(well more treading, dogpaddle) a few months before her 4th birthday and she lives to be in the water. LOVES it!!! She just learned to ride her bike without training wheels a couple months ago but I wanna get some roller blades so her and I can go to a nearby(not super) park for biking, blading, skateboarding. Went when she was trying to get her training wheeled bike going.

She gets most her activity requirements running around outside.

If I lived in a more conducive(and safer) neighborhood I would love to take up daily walks in the evening too.

On some occasions while dining out she is allowed to. That is typically the only time I have soda myself. Most times she picks pink lemonade but its usually more "sugary" like soda so pretty much same thing. She sometimes she orders pepsi/coke or Sprite and I let her. I want her to know we can occasionally have those things but they aren't everyday things. If we ate out more I suppose that would have to be more regulated but we rarely eat out so I let her go crazy.

Primarily she drinks soy milk(plain or flavored) and water. The water is new habit. She didn't like it but I find I can get her to drink 2-3 8 oz cups in the evening. Can't tell what she drinks at school but she is a fan of the water fountain every place we go so I suspect she uses it a lot.

What helped on the water was having cold fresh water. I have recently bought a new water cooler and we fill the bottles ourself at the local water n ice store its 25 cents a gallon but well worth it. For me, my brother and her we go through over 15 gallons a week. EASY! I'd like to increase that to 20-25 gallons. Some weeks we go about 4 days on 3 5 gallon bottles and need more. lol

It also helped, I'm sure, that I quit grabbing soda so I usually have a tall 16 oz or so glass full of water all the time. She will either sip from mine or go get her own water. I'm trying to cut out my morning soda too. Plus it saves on the grocery budget. I grew up with my mom who only drinks soda :( My dad is the same way however us kids were never allowed to drink it there.

My kids drink pop occasionally just like I do. But not everyday. I let them have a snack if they are hungry, just not too close to a meal. Some snacks are healthy, some are not. It just depends. Through out my dieting life I have learned that I will crave what I can't have and then binge. So I allow them to have pop or junk food on occasion in hopes to not have them have that issue. I still bake cookies and cakes. I am just trying to help them make better choices here at home and other places. We do play and move, but I do not call it exercise. They walk with me sometimes or ride their bikes. But I don't call it exercising. I think its better to incorporate healthy living rather than be so heavily focused on healthy this, healthy that. I want good health, not to be skinny or have a perfect body. So I want that for them, too. Its important to make good food choices as well as keep moving. That's our focus. :) So different from the way I was raised, diet yo-yoing and non-exercise.

Generally no- they probably get it a couple times a year. Even if we go to a restaurant, I usually don't even give them the option, just give them the juice and milk options. Besides orange juice in our house- for my protein shakes, I only buy pure fruit juice once in a while. Otherwise, they drink water and sometimes milk.

My kids like pop, but I think they do because they see it as a treat. We only have it a few times a month. We almost always have milk or juice at meals and water in between. Even when we go out to eat they'll often choose chocolate milk over pop.

My kids only get soda for drinks when we are out some where for dinner which isn't that often, or I buy it for the house on a occasion. I never have soda in the house on a regular basis. Their main drinks are either..milk, water, tea, juice, or kool aid.

My kids sometimes get carbonated drinks when we go out (which is pretty rare), but I don't keep any in the house for them. They prefer lemonade. At home they get that once or twice a week. The rest is milk, juice, and water. They like to mix fountain drinks if they get the chance--lemonade and Sprite is DD's favorite.

My kids eat veggies. Always have. We started with a 2 bite rule from early on. They couldn't say they didn't like something if they had never tried it. Still, my oldest doesn't like cooked carrots, but she has to eat a few when I make them. She suffers through. emoticon (She's 12).

I try to prepare them in ways that they like them. Somethings they prefer steamed others raw. For snacks I make a veggie platter and they have it with a bit of dip.

It's been a long road, but if you keep introducing them - I think you can raise a veggie lover.

I've also made it a game all their lives. Taken them shopping with me. They've always selected a new veggie to try from the produce section. (Or a new fruit).

The only time my daughter gets soda is maybe once a month if we go out to eat. But boy does she love to exercise with me. we do yoga, t-ball, walking on the treadmill during rain and walking/running outside. She is just as active as I am so it really makes it easy for me, as long as Im not dead after work lol.

On the soda question: we don't have it at home except after holidays and other special occassions. The can have soda (non-caffienated) when we go out to eat. They LOVE places where they can mix the fountain drinks together. Drinks are the place where all of my healthy habit teachings have completely failed. My older one will NOT drink plain water and the younger one will not drink milk. Honestly, the issue turned into such a battle that I gave up and just try to moderate it as much as possible. I hope that dh's and I's good examples will sink in as they get older.

On the exercise question: my kids are usually involved in some type of sport or something. They also love bike rides and general back yard play. We also go to the Y for swimming.

Keep a green tree in your heart & perhaps the singing bird will come.

My kids won't drink soda. I never let them have it when they were small and now they don't like the bubbles. They drink mostly water. That's at least one healthy habit they do have.

My dd (10) has never liked pop. My ds (4) would knock you over for a pop! But we don't have it in the house. Just on very special occasions when we're at someone else's home. And then only one small cup - rest of the time water. And those juice boxes more frequently - only 100% juice or those veggie/fruit drinks. We also talk about the bad effects it has on your teeth, overall healthy habits, etc.

Exercise is just as sparse. :( We used to turn on some music and dance for quite a while... we need to reinstate that again!

Not very much. We don't keep it in the house, but if we go out to eat, I let them get noncaffenated soda like sprite or rootbeer. I don't think its good for kids. If we visit my mom for a week, and I let my 10 year old son have a soda a day, he gets leg cramps.

Well, my son is only 21 months old so the short answer is "no." He gets juice, milk, and water (often juice mixed with water). However, he has had soda before and he likes it. I sometimes give him carbonated water with his juice, which makes him feel very proud and grown up.

We hike or walk together once a week. Both my kids love to play basketball with the little tike basketball hoop. We have a fenced in backyard and I will let them go out and run themselves ragged or play on the swingset. Sometimes we play a game of Simone says...jumping jacks, run in place or a game of red light green light. Since winter they have been enjoying sledding, making snowmen, snow ball fights, and other winter activities.

The funniest way they exercise is step arobics. Picture it....a 20 month old, 8 year old, and me all trying to utilize a step. They love when I step up and jog around. If not the kids take turns using one side of the step and I am stuck on the other. They try and imitate what I am doing.

How do you have kids get that exercise time? I tell mine to play outside but our neighbors next door can't come out during the week because of school work and I can't MAKE them play. They ride bikes a little but I worry about them going too far. What do y'all do?

I used to babysit for a family who told their kids coke and soda beverages were "grown up drinks" just like wine and stuff. They never wanted it, even when they got older and their friends were drinking it. They always stuck to water and juice. They are 18 and 20 now and still don't drink sodas. And they have always been on the thin side. I love it!

Kids should get 60 minutes of fun activity a day. Playing sports, active games, exercising, whatever it may be. Now is the time to teach that being physically active and fit is a fun part of daily living.

Absolutely, as long as it's disguised as play time. I don't think children need an excersize regimen just plenty of time for active play. We race, play soccer and football, ride bikes.

My kids don't like soda yet and I hope to keep it that way. They are 4 and 5 and think the carbonation is 'spicy'.
The usually get 2-3 snacks. After breakfast, after lunch, and sometimes another depending on our day. Snacks at home are healthy, snacks at daycare, not my favorite but they are getting healthier.

Sometimes none, sometimes one or 2. They have a snack if they are hungry between meals. We try to stick to something healthy. We do have treats every once in a while.

My 17 year old drinks pop but not in our house since I do not buy it. My 14 year old does not and my 3 year old don't drink it. I try to push water and milk but they also will drink g2's occasionally.

My 20 month old will never know what soda is. My 8 year old does. We only do soda on special occassions though.

Only on occasion will my son choose to drink either root beer or sprite/7up. We never gave him the option to drink coke as a little one and he never developed a taste for it. Usually when we go out to restaurants he orders milk, hot or iced tea or water.
But that is what my husband and I always order as well. We're not big soda drinkers
