You're right, Spiegy. It isnt always about lax parenting. Of course parents should always be responsible, and kids bear their share also. But an overweight child, or a child w/a medical condition, isnt always someone's "fault". I'm sorry to hear of all the loss in your family, and pray that things go well w/your son..and you.

Doc to patient: "Which fits your schedule better..being active an hour a day, or dead 24 hours a day?"
The doctor thinks my 13 year old son is pre-diabetic due to some physical signs, he's having blood tests done this week. I'm heartbroken. Even if he gets it under control for now and lowers his sugar levels I know that this means he WILL become diabetic, sooner rather than later. My husband has it (and is not overweight), my father died from it at 49, his father at 57, and so many others in my family. I just tested pre-diabetic AFTER losing weight and exercising more. Diabetes is a horrible, debilitating disease, and it runs in families, it's not just about lifestyle and eating. My son is overweight but not obese, has been exercising consistently for the last 6 months, but.... there you go.
When the blues whomp you up on the side of the head, throw them to the floor and kick them out the door... -- the B'52s
This may sound very mean but it is in no way intended to be that way. My belief is that if you let your kid eat huge portions, sit and watch TV, or play video games all day then that to me is child abuse and neglect. Being overseas I see how different portion sizes are. My kiddo only needs a small amount not my size portions. Check out this site www.change4life.co.uk

It's gotten to the point where some parents need to step up to the plate and take personal responibility. I have talked with city officials about lowering the prices on recreation acivities to get more kids involved
