Melissa getting some things done but ended up wiping myself out and now it has been raining so hopefully will be able to finish the front sprinklers tomorrrow or this weekend. The ones near the sidewalk did not need to be raised but had to get the grass out of its way. I still have to fix the break in the system and also figure out how to change the pump where the water comes up to the sprinkler system since it is leaking some.

Bri hopefully he will realize that no one cares for him more than his family and people just don't care about giving him what he thinks that they owe him. That is one thing that is wrong with some of the sports and in school today, they give them praise when they don't deserve it. The real world does not do that at all. This feel good for the kids is just plan wrong.

My son is digging himself a hole, he's not accepting the world doesn't owe him and is letting others take care of him. He broke his cell phone and I had to buy myself a new one (mine was the only line that qualified) through the Verizon edge program and now I have a "smart" phone. Yay......
You sound busy, Melissa. I hope your visit with your parents goes well.
Hugs all.

Bri...hope this week is better!
Dorothy...sounds like you have been getting a lot done there. How are you feeling this week? My parents leave Saturday (my brother is driving them here) and they will stay with us for a week before I drive them up to WI for the summer. They've been busy with dr. appts and packing.

The kids have standardized testing this week and next. So far so good. My daughter caused an incident at home on Tuesday and she's refusing to do her consequences so she is digging herself quite a hole. My son and DH are packing for their Scout pack camping trip this weekend so they will leave tomorrow after school and be back Sunday.

I am headed out to get a hair cut and then run a bunch of errands. Tomorrow I will finish my cleaning ;)

Hope you all are doing well!

Melissa that is great that the troupe is better and that she likes it. Had something like that happen to my daughter and she decided not to keep going. It was caused by the leaders daughter causing my daughter problems and she would not address her daughters behavior either. I don't think there was another troupe close either but that left a bad experience in my daughter and she did not want to be in another troupe.

Well have been taking it easy since getting the front sprinklers done and then mowing the lawn., That wiped me out for a couple of days and it did not help that my son's ex came for two days and we have the dog too. She broke up with the other guy and can not accept it that he does not want to be with her. The other problem is that she still likes my son but will not admit it to herself or to anyone else. My son told her that he is not into playing these games with her and that she needs to figure out what she wants and then do it.

Hi all!
Late check in tonight...did a lot of gardening and yard work the past two days! 2 hours Friday around the front of the house and 4 hours today! I planted over 30 perennial plants after cleaning out 2 different flower beds and refilling with good soil for the plants to grow in. I also pruned two big camellia trees today. My DH put in about half of the fence posts for the new garden today too. A lot of work but we are getting there! My daughter helped for a few hours today too which was great.

Dorothy...thanks for asking about the new troupe. It is SO MUCH better! My daughter is loving it! And the moms are so much easier to get along with. I talked to the old troupe leader today and they will let her receive her bronze award for this year (which is good) even though she has already switched to a new group.

Anyway...I'm over the strep now, but still have a lot of writing to get done so I will have to buckle down and write all day tomorrow and get it done!

Take care all!

Well busy with PT for my back. It seems that the pain in my right side is caused by my back and it being so tight and causing the muscles to be inflamed. Tomorrow is the last day for PT and I might get the last shot since my side is acting up again. I do feel that it is still tight but it cost to much to continue with PT. I have not heard from the cardio so I will be calling my Doctor to see what happened to the referral. My laptop monitor went out and priced the motherboard and it was $264 and add a little more money and I can get a new one but right now I need things fixed around the house and will use the money for that.

Melissa how did the new girl scout troupe go?

CRAZY_BREEZY that is all the hormones that they put in animals and some of the food too. Early puberty is one of the signs of getting all those growth hormones, maybe you want to switch to organic milk and organic foods that has the most pesticides in them

Hi all! It's a busy time of year!
I know everyone is busy so just say hello when you can ;)

My in laws were here, I was sick with strep (again) and now this week I am a contract writer. The garden is half way done so we need to finish this weekend. Lots of rain here lately.

I will try to check in more later...how is everyone doing?

Take care,
Melissa

Wow! What a week! Phew!
Busy week with stuff going on each day. My daughter has been sick and she tested positive for strep. We just can't get rid of it around here!
My DH has been traveling all week and got back late last night. I've had sitters in to help each night while I'm teaching. It's been hectic but we made it. This weekend we have to get the house clean and get the garden set up. Many of the seeds we started have sprouted so we can't wait to get everything in the ground!
My in laws will be here next week for part of the week and weekend. The kids have spring break next week so we're just going to relax and do some fun things.

What is everyone doing for Passover or Easter?
We're decorating eggs tomorrow, going to church Sunday and it will just be us for dinner on Sunday. My in laws will come Wed or Thursday. I'm getting some books and fun things for the kids Easter baskets today.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Bri...hang in there. Glad you are seeing your doc. Hope you can find some relief. Ugh...puberty! I'm so sorry. My daughter is in 5th and she's not quite there yet, but soon. I worry a lot about her because she also has Oppositional Defiance Disorder and I know how wicked that can be during adolescence. I'll be praying for you all!

My Rosie is improving...the vet gave us antibiotics, pain meds and a probiotic to give her so I'm keeping the meds going and I think she is starting to feel better. I'm so sorry you lost your cat to that Bri. It's so hard to figure out that they have it because they can't tell you, and unless you see them pee every time it is easy to miss.

We have a girl scout meeting with the new troop this afternoon...can't wait! My DH is taking my son out to Kennesaw (about an hour drive) for a soccer game at 5pm...going to be a late night for them since they won't get home until 8pm or later. We're getting as much of our Sunday routines done this afternoon as we can.
Soccer was rough yesterday...tough loss, but I've talked with my son about the level of personal practice and effort it is going to take to improve his skills. This is an opportunity for him so we will help him step up and put in the hard work. He's pretty good at most things he does without having to study or work at it, so this is new for him and I think it is really good for him.

Allright...back to work here!
Have a wonderful Sunday all!

I'm trying to harden my hot pepper seedlings...they have 2 leaves now, but are curling in on themselves. I hope they survive.
I'm having issues with both my kids....daughter is in early puberty and boy the mood swings! My son has set himself on a difficult path, but he's 18 now. I'm not really able to do anything about it, just be supportive.
I've bloated up and I'm having womanly issues so I see my Dr. tomorrow. Dorthy, we have that in common. Mellisa, please keep an eye on your doggie. I lost a cat to that it and broke all our hearts.
Hugs to everyone.

Hi all,

Dorothy...glad your son is helping with the computers...such a hassle though.
Glad you are seeing the cardiologist but I hope nothing is wrong.

Busy day. Started with an early soccer game and it was only 40 degrees and windy! Tough game for our team, but maybe it will motivate them to work harder. I had a talk with my son about it and he has agreed to do all the soccer drills on the days they don't have practice. We'll help him and work with him, but we'll see if he will stick with it. The teams they are playing are playing at a higher level and it shows.

Had a piano consult this afternoon and I am sad to say that the kids were rude. If my children behaved that way in front of an adult they just met, I would be embarrassed. I don't know if they will sign up for piano with me, but if either of them do they will first get a lesson in manners and etiquette in order to be in my studio.

I was out several times today to walk the dog. She has a urinary tract infection so I'm encouraging her to drink a lot of water and to go out a lot. Tonight I also did a lot of stretching with my daughter. She does ballet and I suggested she do her stretching routine with me while my son was out doing soccer drills with my DH.

Time to run for now...bed is calling!
Take care all!

Sounds like you all are having so much going on. Sorry for being on here hit and miss but I have two computers that are shutting them selves off on me while I am on sparks or any other place. I am trying to get my son to get my laptop done first so that when I do the computer room I don't have to worry about not being able to use it as well. I have to change out the old desk and get the new one built in the room.

I also have been going to PT for my back, it seems that it is so tight that is is putting pressure on my ribs. I have gotten a shot in my back to help with the nerves being inflamed and they are trying to calm that down so that it can loosen my muscles in my back. I also got a call today about my stress test and they are sending me to a cardoilogist to see what is going on. They said that there was some abnomalities in the test. So we will see what happens when I do get to see the heart doc.

Thank you! How are you doing?

Feeling pretty good today ;)
Although I had to drop my Rosie off at the vet this morning...she had blood in her urine. They are doing tests today and will call this afternoon. Busy weekend ahead for us so I need to keep moving today and get some things done. Supposed to get cold again too so I have to bring all my plants in tonight.

Thank you for that CrazyBreezy! I will hold my tongue and set that boundary...thank you.

I had a pretty good talk with one friend on Tuesday...she is the girl scout troop leader and I felt we needed to clear the air before she came to my Bible study group this week. We shared and both apologized for communicating poorly and misinterpreting things. That said, my daughter is still transferring to another troop and I've learned that this friend is easily swayed by others so I still have to be careful around her.

My Bible study group was great yesterday...fun group and great conversation with good questions!

I'm either almost done or done with this flare...more energy and getting more done, less pain and none of the other annoying symptoms. If I continue to improve I'm going to start running again next week! Can't wait!

Melissa, hold your head high and remember....you are strong, smart, and more mature then an individual that has to entertain themselves talking about others. If I were in that situation, I would probably say "That's rather personal." I hope this helps.

Breezy...so excited for you! Congrats on losing weight! Sometimes you have to tune out everything else and just focus on your inner energy...good for you! We've missed you too.

I have a question for all of you. A couple of moms I have to interact with because of soccer or scouting or other activities our kids are in, have been clearly talking about me and my Lupus behind my back (not in a good way). Last week I got an email saying basically 'don't bother showing up for xxxx event on Saturday since it will be too much for you.' Then yesterday I was at my son's soccer match and one of the moms (in this little clique) gave me that 'concerned' look and asked me, 'How are you feeling...I mean with the lupus?' I know this woman to be a huge gossip so I just said fine and changed the subject and she pretty quickly went away. My question is, what are some ways to respond to a judgmental group that you have to deal with at least for the next few months?
Right now I'm offended and angry and want to rant at them about how ignorant, disgusting and awful they are. How dare they judge what I am capable of? How dare they pretend to be concerned? How dare they try to cut me out of anything?
Yeah...I'm thinking that's not the right response. These are not close friends so I know I could also just suck it up and ignore them and say nothing. I'm not in 7th grade anymore so the adult in me can move on. But I'm still not sure what the best response is. Any suggestions?

Anyway...rainy here today. We got a lot done outside yesterday. My DH rented a garden tiller and tilled a large area for our garden. We're expanding and moving our garden space so it's a lot of work this year. But in the end it will be worth it. We'll also have to build a high fence to keep the deer out and I'll still do the raised beds. Yesterday my daughter and I got all our seeds planted so that when the garden is ready we'll have plants ready too.
I also got the wireless pet fence set up on Friday and started training Rosie so hopefully it will work for her. We are taking the current fence down and re-doing the back yard so that we have more room overall and a better space for the kids (and for us).

Time to go...hope you all are doing well!

That makes two of us...missed you Breezy! How are you doing? Please jump right in!

I'm hanging in there...dealing with side effects from restarting the Plaquenil and starting another med. Nausea and stomach cramping :(

Otherwise doing well. Funny story...last Saturday I ordered a wireless fence for the dog thinking we would start training Rosie this weekend. Well...today while I was cleaning I let her out not realizing the fence had fallen down. When I discovered it, she was down in the creek getting completely muddy and having a blast! I got her back in and got her cleaned up, then got myself cleaned up. Hopefully the wireless system will arrive today...have to laugh at such great timing!

Hello

Melissa so glad your back on track. I think my meds are working too. I also use some essential oils on my elbow. It feels like tennis elbow but the pain has been going on since January. I need to make an appointment.

Both my kids played the clarinet in middle school. I loved hearing their music.

The weather is warming up and it's nice to be outside without jackets. I did see a snake in front of our house yesterday...eeeek.

Have a blessed day

Hi all!

Half day of school for mine today so now we are snuggled in on a cool rainy day!
I just got a great email report from my new dr and according to all the blood work results, we are on the right track with all the supplements. She wants to increase my Vit. B and see if we can get my thyroid up a bit with that before having to go on medication. I will meet with her next week just to check in and see what's next.

Yesterday marked one year without our sweet Ginger (choc lab) who died of cancer. She had a good 11 years and we are happy that she has been without pain and suffering even though we still miss her here.

My parents asked if I would be able to drive them up to Wisconsin in May so I'm making plans to have them stay here for a few days and then drive them up. My DH is getting me a flight back using his frequent flier miles. So glad I can help them out a bit!

Time to run...have to get some lunch and then get ready for piano lessons ;)
Take care all and make it a great weekend!

Hey everyone!

Kristy...enjoy working in the yard. Always feels good to get outside work done! We have a lot to get done here too.

I think the Plaquenil is starting to kick back in. I have less pain in my shoulder even though the rainy weather has been hanging around. One of the new supplements is a bit too much for me and causing some diarrhea so I'm backing down to every other day. Otherwise I'm feeling a little better overall and getting some energy back! So maybe by this time next week I can get back to running and working out? We'll see!

Way too much mama drama going on around me and I'm staying away from it. One mom from soccer keeps texting me to find out how I'm doing and how the kids are doing and why I'm never at soccer practice (I'm working). She is looking for gossip. Yesterday another mom from the Girl Scout troop (which I am treasurer of) called and yelled at me and hung up on me! Weird! So glad we are leaving that troop.

On a fun note...pun intended...the middle school music teachers were visiting 5th grade classes this week and my daughter is excited about joining band next year! She doesn't know what she wants to play yet, but I have my mom's clarinet that I also played in middle and high school. I have to take it and get new pads and corks, but it's an old wood clarinet with beautiful tone. If she wants to use it she can ;) If not, maybe I'll practice up and get my chops back.

I have to run...did my errands this morning and now I need to finish my chores and get ready for lessons this afternoon. Take good care everyone!

Hello everyone!

The last couple of days have been so nice. I am taking tomorrow off to help hubby in the yard. I am looking forward to spending time with him and making the yard beautiful again.

I hope y'all are doing great. I had an excellent piyo class yesterday and a wonderful zumba class today!

Hi all!
Late check in for me after a long day! Got my writing finished and turned in on time today. My son has not felt good all weekend. He played soccer Saturday even though he wasn't feeling great. Yesterday he spiked a fever so he had to miss his game and he was home today. I'm taking him to the dr. in the morning.

I had a little more energy today (I think) so hopefully I am making progress and can get some things done this week.

How is everyone else this week?

Take care,
Melissa

Hi...just a quick check in!
My son's soccer practice was cancelled last night due to freezing rain and high winds and it was cold this morning. But it's supposed to warm up this weekend. My DH agreed to take our daughter to ballet last night so I could stay home and write. Today I have a couple of errands to run and some music to prep for lessons. Tomorrow I plan to write all day.

I'm still battling the fatigue and joint pain, so hopefully once the Plaquenil kicks back in and the supplements start to work I can feel better again.
Take care all!

Hi everyone,

I've been noticing so much drama going on all around lately...is it just me? Whew...maybe it's the moon cycles, or the winter cold, or SAD? Either way I'm glad I'm staying out of all of it!

So far so good here this week. I'm slowly starting to feel a bit more energetic. Hopefully once the Plaquenil kicks in again I will have less daily pain and I can start to work out again for real. My son's soccer season is in full swing now...2 nights a week of practice and games both Saturdays and Sundays. We'll see how it goes...we didn't intend to sign up for this travel league (thought we were in the rec portion). He loves the coaching and instruction he is getting so we'll see how the season goes. I have to get to work on my writing so I can't post much here now until after I'm done next Monday.
If I don't check in...have a fantastic weekend everyone!

Hi all!

Finally a little sun and some warmer temps today!

Had a good Bible study this morning and soon have to get my kids off the bus, then lessons. My DH is traveling so I'm on my own and have to save enough energy to put the kids to bed ;)

How is everyone else doing this week? Check out one of the challenges for this month...hope you can pick one ;)

Take care,
Melissa

Yay for new sandals! I think everyone is ready for spring...my friends up North have battled two rough winters in a row. Glad you are using essential oils. I have several that I use either topically or infused in the air. We'll have to swap uses/recipes!

My DH took the vacuum cleaner on Saturday to get a part replaced and they got it working in the store, but now it doesn't work again. My poor floors have not been vacuumed in a week! I admit it's driving me a little crazy...must be OCD...lol! I'm trying to ignore it and maybe this weekend he can take it in again.

Time to go...have writing and piano stuff to do before I swap laundry!
Take care and have a great day everyone!

Yay Melissa! That is great news and hopefully you are on the road to less pain and more activity! I just started using essential oils and I am impressed so far. They can be a bit overwhelming because there are so many. I have been using a few for back pain and headaches. It's very interesting.

Hopefully we have the warm weather we are supposed to get. I am ready for spring but that may be the new sandals I got this weekend. lol

have a great day team!

Kristy...I know sometimes we don't realize the meds are working until we go off them! Glad you are back on yours.

Felt pretty bad all weekend, but made it through. So my dr. apt this morning was...AMAZING! She is an MD but also does Integrative Medicine which incorporates all kinds of things. We talked through everything and she totally supports all I'm doing with diet, exercise, supplements and more. She refilled my Plaquenil and added a few more supplements. So I'll see her in a few weeks after my lab results come in. She affirmed all the natural and organic stuff as well as being gluten and dairy free. I am really excited to work with her and get back on track so I can run and workout again, and just feel better!

I also had my writing conference call today and that went well. I have a good topic so I'll get started writing tomorrow and it's due next Monday so I have lot's to do!

Time to go...just glad I'm encouraged by a doc for a change and feel like there is hope!

Hi Melissa hopefully the doc can get you feeling better. I stopped my meds in Dec and started having symptoms again in FEB so I am back on the meds. I was surprised that the meds helped my elbow pain and hip pain. I thought these were from working out and my scoliosis.

I hope everyone has a great day!

Hi all,

Sorry I haven't been here most of the week...with my kids off school most of the week and then my daughter sick I haven't had much of my own time. Plus my flare is getting worse. I'm seeing a new doctor on Monday so I am hopeful she will do some tests and that we can get me back on track in the next few weeks.

My son has a soccer game today and then I'm going to a women's gathering for the evening. It's women from one of the churches we've visited and we'll see how it goes.

All else is good here...looking forward to being back to my normal routines next week!

Take care all,
Melissa

Rainy here the past couple of days. Not helping the joint pain but hopefully this is the last day of it.
Have to finish getting recital music picked out for my students this week and of course all the normal house chores to get done.
Looking forward to some warmer weather and sunshine!

Kristy,
Kids just went back to school today! What a week! Because the schools are lumped together by county, our southern Forsyth county schools get closed because of the weather in northern Forsyth. The northern counties all had more ice and wind so many more areas with trees down, roads closed and power out than here. And snow and ice predicted for tonight! Hope you are staying warm down there ;)

It's been a time of getting kicked in the teeth for being kind at our house. Several different things have happened and other people seem to want to blame, shame or just be nasty lately. Yesterday a situation was unfolding with my daughter's girl scout troop and we were shocked at how awful the adults (moms) were being (online) and how the leader did nothing to stop it, and the girls lose out as a result. Then I was doing my devotional reading and a Scripture came up that perfectly fit the situation so my daughter and I prayed and agreed to just ignore what was going on and to continue to think about how to move forward. Last night she and I talked about leaving that troop and finding a new one. She suggested it and I support her. We've tried all year to support the leader, offer ideas, be there to help, and be positive only to get shut out, left out or shamed. We had a great conversation about the difference between forgiveness and abuse. Anyway, stuff like that has been happening in several arenas...so I'm glad I spent a lot of time reading Brene Brown this year! Our kids learn so much by watching how we handle situations and I'm so glad that I'm still learning better ways to handle my own feelings, as well as stand up to those who bully, blame, judge, shame or even abuse. Whew! ok...sorry that was so long!

I'm schedule to see a new dr. on March 2nd who is an MD but also does integrative medicine. I've been off my Plaquenil now for about 10 days because my rheum and primary care have new policies and not only can I not get in to see either of them for 3 months, they won't refill scrips without current labs. What a racket!

Anyway...keeping warm and safe here. Hope you all are planning to have a great weekend!

My family arrived home safely from SC just before the ice storm really hit. Schools here were cancelled today and again for tomorrow because so many trees are down and not all the power has been restored and roads opened up yet.
We're good here...a few branches down but no major trees or damage on our property and out power has been fine so far. The kids are sick of each other and we'd all be better off being back on our schedules, but we'll survive ;)

I'm hoping to get to bed early tonight...still dealing with flare symptoms.

Take care everyone!

Really enjoyed watching the SNL40 last night...most of it was great and I loved seeing the old clips. My family is coming home today so I'll be happy to see them all. I have just a few chores and errands to do so I'll get to work on those next.

It is supposed to get icy and maybe we'll get a little snow later tonight or tomorrow. We'll see...it may stay a little farther north.

Kristy...how was your weekend?

Dorothy...how are you feeling?

Stay warm everyone!

Hi!

I have a 3-day weekend coming up too! Monday is Family Day here and most businesses are closed.

Thanks Melissa for noticing thatÖ.I do put conscious effort into being a positive example of how to live happy and active despite having a very serious illness so Iím glad one person noticed! Note the ďDispelling MythsĒ thread I started here. Iíve been so incredibly sick, hospitalized with lupus glumeronephritis three time...so I was pretty motivated to get healthy, and really appreciate being able to be active again. Actually Iíve started a lot of positive threads to help us feel empowered: Strong Women Have Strong Bones, One Step to Good Health, Rise and Shine, Positive Words A to Z, Overcoming Obstacles, Gentle Exercises, Music Therapy....

I still feel very strongly about the MMR vaccine. This is not me pushing my opinion on you, this is fact. If your pediatrician has *evidence* that the vaccine caused his sonís autism that would be one thing. But anecdotes are just stories, and donít have accurate statistics to prove anything. Without fact-driven medical consensus, itís just a hunch. Heís a doctor but that doesnít mean everything he says is true. Andrew Wakefield, who originally made the claim, has long ago been discredited and is even barred from practising medicine!

The measles are highly contagious, and can do serious harm to many people, including babies and people with underlying health issues, like us. So I feel it is important to explain, because we are the potential victims. Years ago I caught an infection I couldnít fight off because of SLE that caused me to need emergency open heart surgery! So I know first-hand how vulnerable we are to viruses and bacterium in the community. Exposure to the measles is an unnecessary risk the anti-vaxxers have forced upon all of us.

This 15 day old baby was exposed to measles near Toronto, when taken to the hospital for a checkup. His Mother was vaccinated, but is responsible enough to keep herself and her baby under quarantine so they donít spread it to anyone else, in case they have it. Babies cannot get vaccinated and she wonít know for 21 days whether he has it.
tinyurl.com/nulss8c

Itís been great to meet other people with SLE here. I was hoping for someone with kidney involvement to turn up! Because my lupus attacks my kidneys, my three major flares have been near-fatal. Iím not exaggerating, Iíve had some really scary times! Iíd like to meet someone else with lupus glumeronephritis.

Happily I havenít had a flare since 2004 and I have a pretty normal life! I wish the same for all of you!

Look for the great things in your day and focus on them, and keep active because motion is lotion!

Spark cheers!

Busy day with getting my son to a dr. appt, then home for Bible study, then returning phone calls and emails! Got in a good smoothie with my lunch today and the sun is shining here so even though I am tired I feel positive!

What is everyone doing for Valentine's day/weekend?

I forgot something important :)
Carla...you are an inspiration to me and to countless others. I never would have tried to run again if you had not been such an exuberant example. Just by sharing your journey you planted seeds that led to me working my way back to being out running again (shuffling really, but at least I'm out there)! You truly Sparked me! That's what we are about.

All of you inspire me...not because you are all perfect or know everything, but because you are working hard to live your best life despite all the stuff we deal with! Sick or well, when we post and share here we inspire, comfort, support and encourage others in ways that sometimes our families and friends cannot.

Let's keep that Spark going, shall we?!

Let's not judge here. We're meant to support one another and connect with one another, not judge choices.

I have had a conversation with a pediatrician whose son was vaccinated, got sick and regressed developmentally and is now considered on the autism spectrum. Many people don't understand how broad and diverse the autism spectrum of disorders is. And it is growing as new disorders are being identified. Sadly we won't know for many years which factors contribute the most auto-immune disorders as well as autism spectrum disorders because the research always lags behind.

Technically speaking my daughter falls on the autism spectrum, but her symptoms are comparatively mild. She was vaccinated on the standard schedule because I didn't know I was allowed to do anything else. However, I did change things for my son and I spread out his vacs and did not use the bundles. Because my son also had RSV and some other health issues from being a month premature, my pediatrician was very willing to work with me on an altered vac schedule.

For me what matters most is that we are not at the mercy of pharmaceuticals and insurance companies who think they can mandate health coverage and what treatments are needed or available. We all want the same thing...wellness. But we all have to travel our own path to get there. For some, doing things naturally is the only option because of reactions to pharmaceuticals. For others natural remedies are not enough.

The reason I've stayed on SparkPeople for so long is the support of groups like this. When I'm in a flare (like now) I've found encouragement, support and understanding because you all know what it's like. When we start judging each other that support breaks down and we are afraid to share what is really going on.
Sorry for the preaching...I just want to make sure we stay on track with the mission of Spark People and provide a supportive place for all team members to share regardless of how sick or well we feel from day to day or week to week.

A *miniscule* number of people get the measles despite having had the MMR vaccination. The vaccine provides full protection for 95% of people. People like us are in the 5% because of our autoimmune disease. Some can't get it for other reasons, some have weak immune systems from cancer or other illnesses. This is who gets the measles despite being vaccinated. Babies can't be vaccinated, so they're vulnerable if not enough people are vaccinated too.

From what I understand, a lot of American doctors are influenced by pharmaceutical companies and insurance companies. This is not so much of a problem in other countries, and it's definitely not the case for the academic journals which published significant, evidence-based, peer-reviewed research proving that there is no link between the MMR vaccine and autism.

The researchers who tested and re-tested, looking for a connection, were not getting lucrative perks for promoting certain medications and treatments. My partner and some of my friends are scientists, and believe me, peer-reviewed and evidence-based means overwhelmingly credible information!

I'm probably in the "vaccinated but susceptible" category because of my use of prednisone to protect my kidneys, so I'm going to get a measles titer test and see if I should be vaccinated again. It's airbourne, so it could be anywhere. If enough people were vaccinated, I wouldn't have to worry about this!

One of the common measles complications in adults is pneumonia...that's not something I want to have again! Have you had pneumonia since you got SLE? It hits hard!

Dorothy, you write so much about using "natural" treatments and home remedies, but you're constantly sick and in pain! So your medical opinions don't hold much water.

The evidence is overwhelming that the MMR vaccines are extremely low risk and extremely high benefit. It's unnecessary to have the measles going around in 2015.

I don't think anti-vaxxers are ignorant and I don't think they mean to be selfish. But there's a whole lot of evidence that the MMR vaccine and community immunity/herd immunity are safe and responsible, and I would have thought people with auto-immune diseases would be more conscientious about that.

The people that so-called proved that it does not cause autism are the ones that are being paid by the drug company and I don't trust them..

I had all three measles as a kid and so I am not going to have that test. Plus if vaccinations did work then how come the ones that are vaccinated are getting it still?

Has there been proof that the MMR vaccine bundle causes autism? If I get the measles, I'd probably be toast because of my long term use of prednisone to keep my kidneys going. I got the vaccine but some people who got it are still getting the measles now.

I'm going to get my titers checked to see if my vaccines are still protecting me.

Have any of you had this test? It's apparently sometimes recommended for people with SLE but I never heard of it until a dr suggested it to me yesterday:

Melissa ginger also helps to calm the stomach down too and so does peppermint oil. Just be careful with the peppermint, the cooling affect can be daunting.

Isn't it interesting how times have changed? The docs and media would like us to believe that everyone died from measles, mumps, rubella, rheumatic fever or chicken pox. Yes, they are preventable and scary, and many children did die. But many more survived. Having the vaccines is wonderful, but unfortunately the way many of them got bundled in the last 15-20 years has been harmful to many children. Sad how the government and the media has demonized doctors and parents who dare to go against the now 'standard' schedule and bundle of vacs.

Anyway...my DH is going to the dr today to see if he has strep or something. He had a long day of travel yesterday and was completely worn out today but felt he had to go in to work for a bit. My daughter came home and felt bad yesterday and started getting diarrhea...some kind of GI bug has hit her. This morning it hit my son at 5am. So they are both home and staying quiet. A little pepto has helped slow the diarrhea and a little sprite has calmed the tummies.
I'm fine, just dealing with the flare stuff and glad I can be home to take care of them.

Time to go...have to get a little bit of cleaning done ;)
Take care all,
Melissa

Melissa take care of yourself and I hope that your husband does not come down with what you all have. I am not sure if the weather is causing all your problems or that you are getting what your children have. Glad that the kids are better and are helping you out too. Hopefully your husband can fight this thing that he has. So sorry about what is happening with the girl scouts. Had that problem with a troupe but it was the leader of the group that was causing all the problems and also her daughter too. Ended up taking my daughter out of the group and she did not want to go to that group or another after that too.

No worries about the measles for me since I got all of them when I was little. My mother tried for all of us to get the mumps but that never happened. Our cousins had it but we did not catch it from them and we played with them too while they had it.

Kristy that is great about your daughter and making the deans list!!

Not much going on here and I got a small cement mixer to fix some stuff outside and then I am going to use it to mix my laundry detergent that I make. It will be easier to use that machine than try to roll the container around and get it mixed evenly.

I've already had all the measles -- rubella, roseola, red measles, rubeola -- the works. Back in the 50's, our mothers let us get measles so we would be immune. Same with mumps and chicken pox. No vaccines. We just had to suffer through them. I remember having one type and my brother getting me a huge piano box to sit in to block the light when my mother was reading to me as she sat on the bay window seat. I was four or five. It must have been rubeola, because I was very ill for a few days.

Hey Lupies!

No doubt you've heard about the measles popping up around North America. And some of the people who've contracted it had the vaccine! It's a little scary for people like us, who probably all take immuno-suppressant medication. I did get vaccinated for MMR, so hopefully I'm safe.

Melissa, hope you feel better soon. Do you take prednisone? A short-term high dose of it always snaps me out of a flare, but as you know it has some wild side effects! You know what has helped you recover in the past.

Yay Kristy! What an awesome family! So glad everyone is doing well. What an assignment to be in Hawaii! Hard work does pay off ;)

I'm still battling a lot of symptoms and not feeling well. Headaches, nausea, fatigue and pain today. Doing a lot of praying lately because my prayer list is long and I have to rest a lot ;) I use up most of my available energy each day with my piano lessons. The kids are helping with some chores and earning extra tablet time so that helps a lot. My DH is also helping a lot and has to travel tomorrow so I'll have a sitter come for the evening while I'm teaching. My DH is not feeling great either today so hopefully he's not coming down with something.

How is everyone else?
A big thank you shout out to Carla...thank you for taking care of the challenge and team stuff this month...you are AWESOME!

Take care everyone,

Get better Melissa. Sorry for the drama. Mom's should realize their kids see them acting up!

It was cold here too. It looked nice and sunny but the wind made it cold.

I am working on organizing everything in our house. This will be a slow process but it needs to be done.

My daughter made the Dean's List for her 1st semester in college. My son got orders to Hawaii. Hubby's first official day of retirement was Sunday. We are all very blessed!

Have a beautiful day!

Hi all,
Rough day here...cold and windy but not nearly as bad as in the North. I'm not feeling very good today and it's part of the lupus flare. Woke up dizzy and vomiting. I have it under control now so I'm going to get cleaned up and rest before the kids come home and before I have to teach.
Also had a lot of drama going on with our girl scout troop and I'm just so sick of it. I can't believe how awful some of the moms have behaved, and that the leader refuses to deal with it. So frustrating.
If you are in the snow and ice...stay in and stay safe and warm!

Take care all,

Yay! Thank you Carla! emoticon

I'm feeling a bit better but still have a lot of pain, fatigue and nausea along with a bunch of other random symptoms. I feel like I don't get much done each day, but I can't do much before I get tired and have to rest. The kids are helping out with chores and earning more screen time as a result so that's fine for now.

We all went out to see a movie last night so that was a good activity for us...enjoyed laughing together!
Planning to watch the Super Bowl tonight. I'm still working on a bunch of piano stuff...very busy month for my studio.

Take care all,

Hi! I just finished up my reports in the January Challenge thread.

Melissa, hope you're feeling better! I haven't had a serious flare since 2004 but I can still remember how horrible it is. I can't imagine having kids to take care of while feeling that way!

Hope everyone else is warm and cozy and feeling strong!

Hope that it heals fast and have you tried llysine to help with that too. That is what my rheumatologist told me to use when I broke out with all the sores in my mouth. You can get it at Walmart or the health food store. I crush mine and then hold it in my mouth and after a few minutes I swallow it, or I put it in some tea (about 2 ozs) and slowly drink it, depends on how bad the sores are.

Hi all,

Sorry I haven't been checking in here. I had to write last week and get it done for my deadline this past Monday. Now I'm in a terrible flare up. My mouth and tongue have so many ulcers and are so swollen that I can hardly eat. I did manage to get a green smoothie down with some extra veggies. I'm trying to get extra rest too.

Hang in there everyone...I'll try to check in more tomorrow!

American health care sounds so complicated! Dorothy, I hope you have your appointments set up by now.

I'm working away in my Cardiac Rehab program. It's a rigorous program, I think I'm getting stronger. Looking forward to re-doing the tests in a few weeks and seeing how much progress I've made in the past couple months of this.

Is anyone here in the blizzard area?

Melissa I have to stop in the doctors office and see what they are going to do since that is how my insurance is set up. My family doctor is the only one that can do that type of referral to see a pain management and also get the ball rolling on the full stress test

Hi all,
Dorothy...always something to repair. We have a long list of things to work on here too. Any luck getting in to see a pain doc?
Busy here but everyone is healthy.
Have to do some car maintenance tomorrow and get caught up on some cleaning. If the weather is good again tomorrow I need to get a good run/walk in.

Hope you all are having a good start to the week!

Melissa we did not get the rain but it was cloudy most of the week and got some sunshine yesterday and today. It is suppose to get rain Friday but we shall see. Glad that you are feeling better and the children are feeling better too.

Kristy how is it going with you too?

Was a quiet day today and yesterday and got some stuff to repair the sprinkler system for my garden. It is getting falling apart and plus I ran over some of it and now I have to keep my sprinkler system off until I repair that and it is attached to the lawn system too.

Hi all,

Finally some sunshine in this neck of the woods! What a relief after all the rain and fog.

Kids are feeling a bit better each day and they are at school working on getting caught up. They are good students and they just had great report cards so I know their teachers are not real worried about them missing a few days.

I am taking it a bit easy today. I know it will be a busy weekend so I'm enjoying some quiet time to myself today.

Dorothy...glad you are being proactive about the drs and getting in at the pain clinic.

Take care everyone!

Melissa hope that they continue to get better and get over that nasty virus that they have. As for missing school that can not be helped and make up is so long too. I remember missing a whole month because of a virus that I got. It was not fun to try to get all that school work done too.

Kristy glad that you have not caught any of the stuff that is going around because with what we have it is hard to get over it too.

Am taking it easy and trying different things to easy the pain. Will be calling or going in to see the doctor to see if I can get the ball rolling on the pain management too.

Hi all,

Did not get to check in yesterday since both kids were home sick. They are starting to feel better but this virus takes a while to get over I think. They both went back to school today and my daughter has a lot to make up since she missed 3 days.

I have a tree service here today getting two trees down that are at risk of damaging other trees if they fall on their own. They will get the trees down, but we will do the rest and get them cut up and split for firewood. We can get down some of the smaller trees ourselves, but these are much bigger and much harder so I had an arborist come out last fall to inspect them and now the tree service is carefully taking them down.

I have a lot to get caught up on inside the house, but don't really feel like cleaning today. It is cool and dreary here so and I should get lots of cleaning done since I have to stay here anyway while the tree crew is here.

Have a good day everyone!
Kristy...glad you have avoided all the crud so far this year.
Dorothy...I understand about the meds. This lupus can be a cruel thing. Rest when you can and take good care.

Melissa hope the kiddos get better soon. I have not gotten sick this winter and I hope not to. I usually get a cold with a long lasting cough!! Prayers for y'all too.

It has been cold here this week. I have to bundle up at work because my office is so cold. Hope everyone has a great day!

Melissa it is also hard to lay down too since it seems to put pressure on my chest area because it seems that I am also in a flare. I don't want more drugs since the ones that I am taking don't work or if I have been on them a long time my body rebels against the drugs. That was why they had to take me off the methotrexate. My body rebelled against it.

Dorothy I hope you can get into a pain clinic quickly...I know how hard it is to function when you can't sleep because of the pain.

So many people are sick right now it is just unbelievable. My daughter was home sick yesterday and today...took her to doc today and the strep test is negative but they are sending it out for the overnight test so we'll see. My son went to school this morning but I had to go pick him up because the nurse called and now he is sick too. Poor kiddos! I've changed the menu and I'm making a big pot of chicken soup for tonight. Several of my piano lessons have cancelled today too.

I'm feeling pretty good...just need to get a little more rest tonight. I'm constantly cleaning now and wiping things down so that we don't keep passing things to each other.

Hope everyone else is well!

Had a ruff night and did not sleep well because of the pain. Will need to get to a pain center to see what they can do for me. Will tell my family doctor to go ahead and start it too.

Melissa glad that you are feeling better and that the recital went well too.

Hi all,

How was everyone's weekend?

My piano recital went very well yesterday. My students all did a wonderful job! So proud of them. We had an amazing piano to play...very top of the line and it was incredible!
We ended up eating at an authentic Mexican place last night and was so good. Very fresh ingredients and they had the best corn tortillas. And portions were huge so having leftovers tonight ;)

Went to a different church today for their contemporary service and it wasn't so good so we'll keep trying. We did get to see a few friends so that was good.
My DH went out and did the grocery shopping while I got the rest of the decorations down. He and the kids did the outdoor ones yesterday and got the tree down so I just had all the other stuff to pack up. Now we're just getting ready for the week...getting everyone's snacks and lunches prepped. Busy but productive day!

Time to go...my break is over ;)
Take care,
Melissa

My blood pressure is normal and I know that I need to get back to working out better too. But since my husband passed have no energy or not wanting to do anything too,

Glad that you are feeling better and hope that your son gets better too. Chicken soup is good for that too. Not the kind that you get in a can but the homemade one is the best.

ok Dorothy...now I understand what the doctor is doing. It will be good to see the cardiologist. Does your blood pressure seem ok? Before my mom got a pacemaker she got very tired all the time. Not saying you need a pacer, but I'm sure there is an explanation.

I'm feeling better each day. My son is home sick...he woke up with diarrhea and flu like symptoms so I kept him home. He is eating a little bit now but still pale.

I have a few things to finish up before my recital tomorrow, but all my students are in good shape and I'm getting excited!

Have a great day everyone and stay warm!
