The reason that I joined SparkPeople was to get healthier and return to a healthy weight. Like most people who are overweight, I had read many diet books, was aware of most of the fad, the gimmicks, the false promises, and all of the exercise books too.
Two years ago, I decided, after reading Brian Tracy's Goals, that my most important goal was to become healthy. I found SparkPeople when I was simply searching for an online calorie counter. I had paid to belong to three other sites that did the same thing that SparkPeople does for free and actually easier and better. So all of us should be grateful for SparkPeople.
In November of 2008, I discovered "by accident" a book that has changed my life and my health for the better. It was lost on my bookshelf for years and never read. It is the Carbohydrate Addict's Diet by Drs. Richard and Rachael Heller. I had two copies of this book that I and my wife had bought separately from a library sale and a thrift shop. I had just started Atkins and was thinking about how long it would be before I could actually eat an apple or blueberries again. At 320 pounds, I was a long ways from OWL, "ongoing weight loss".
I ordered the Hellers newer book from Amazon.com where all of their books are available for as little as a penny each plus $3.99 shipping. I've read several since then and I think that their low carb approach is the most informed and best approach of all of the low car or high protein diets that I have read.
It is easier to start and to continue as a lifestyle change. Their book The 7-Day Low-Carb Rescue and Recovery book is a great place to start as it gives you an easy day by day way of slowly changing your present habit to a healthier way of eating.
You never have to give up anything, you learn to save you higher carb favorites for your daily balanced Reward Meal.
Since discovering this program, I feel that I have found THE SECRET to returning to a healthy weight and lifestyle. I have much more information on my SparkPage for those who are interested in finding our more and there is a new and growing team called Carbohydrate Addict's where the only foolish questions are those that are not asked. The team leader is very warm and understanding of where everyone is coming from.
I have devoted all of my SparkPeople time to helping her with this site as I think that is the most important team for serious and permanent weight management on SparkPeople.
