In all of the difficult situations that I have found myself in, it is always the result of a choice that I have made. I may "have to" live by the resulst of my choice, but it was my choice that set up the conditions for the difficulty. It is also my choice to created the means to overcome the challenges. We choose and then we live with our choices, but we are always able to make new choices.

Right now, unfortunately just surviving. Money is so tight that, for the first time in my life, I had to decide whether to buy groceries or gas this week. Argh! I'm working on some extra-income things, but we've never been this broke.
Now, do I have to or choose to? In relation to what. Money, have to because I was part of the problem that got us here. Marriage, choose to. Parenting, choose to. Working, choose to. Just about everything else, choose to. It's just that the money-have-to stuff makes the choosing-to stuff less fun. Does that make sense?

I think it is fair to say that many people are just surviving these days. The cirumstances around us may enforce that we go into "survival" mode but its probably not healthy to remain in that mode for very long. But we can't or rather we shouldn't place our beliefs on everyone, each of us are in different cirumstances. Some have really been given a poor life and are in survival mode, even if they don't appear to be. Some have a very good life and just like to keep the survival mode mentality. Survival is not really a choice in my opinion, its a condition, a matter of life, a set of circumstances many of us come to in our life. Life promises to not be perfect for most, so that means you do have to go into some type of survival mode. However, survival mode doesn't mean every has to hold onto a "have to" instead of a "choose to" mentality. You can be in a survival type situation but have a healthier mindset and choose healthier words to describe your situation. Whats so bad about surviving anyways? There are many creatures in this world that are simply spending their days trying to survive their elements. But you can still appreciate the moments in which you are surviving. Does this make sense to some degree?

The only thing you can change is yourself, but sometimes that changes everything.

Well it's a choice. We can choose to live or survive, which ever we choose is our fate. Have to or Choose to may just be a cultural expression. We always choose. No decision is still a choice. First we have to take responsibility for our lives, complete responsibility, and then we can change it. If we don't accept responsibility, then we have to survive what "the world throws at us", if we choose to look at lift that way. emoticon

which have been on my mind this week.

1. Are you living your life or surviving it?

2. 'Have to' v. 'Choose to'.

I have my own answer to the first one - and I think I'm going to consider it a little more before I write a blog on it.

The second one comes to mind when I think of a friend of mine - and frankly - as much as I love her friendship - her habit of saying that she 'has to' do this and 'has to' do that really bothers me. She makes her life to be a chore on a 'to do' list and something in me wants to say 'you could probably quit therapy if you just changed that 'has-to' to 'choose to' and recognize that you're choosing your life to be what it is'.

So I'm interested in gathering thoughts on these topics while I'm considering my own. Do you live your life or survive it? Do you choose your life? What is your internal dialogue in making choices about your path?
