I'll try that and I will dare someone to eat 4 fruits tomorrow.

How about a dare challenge to get us started? A dare is posted and someone accepts it and posts the next dare. The dare can involve food, exercise, reading a particular SP article, trying an exercise video, drinking water, etc. Use your imagination, but keep it reasonable (25 jumpingjacks, not 100).

I'll post a dare to get things started, then you're on your own until I return from vacation.

I dare someone to drink 10 glasses of water tomorrow. Any takers?

OK - I just got on the scales have gained everything that I have lost. I need to get moving and lose it and keep it off. I have 75 lbs to go. I will be happy with 5 lbs per month but I need a swift kick in the booty. Let's go.

I'm here too. It's nice to see some activity here again. I just got thru a memorial day to Labor Day challenge. Lost 11.4 pounds.

What kind of goals is everyone looking for?

Hi SUEANNA1. It's nice to see someone post here again. I had a reasonably good day to day. Got in my exercise and stayed within my calorie range for the first time this week, so I guess that makes it a good day. How was your day?

Just stopped by to see what was happening on this thread. Hope everyone is doing fine and enjoying our warmer weather. Of course, we had some bad thunderstorms and hail today although the temperature was warm.
God bless everyone as you continue your journey to healthier you.

Wanted to spread a little laughter today...Hope you enjoy it...

Catholic School Whiz Kid

The teenage boy was not doing well at all in public school, so the parents decided that it would be time to send the lad to Catholic school for the year.

At the end of the term, sure enough the son's marks were straight As.

The parents were overjoyed and asked their son, "How did you improve so greatly? Are the nuns that much better teachers?"

"Not really better teachers," said the boy, "but everywhere I looked I saw a man nailed to the cross, and I knew they meant business here."

Hugs,

Did this conversation really die back in November? Perhaps I can get it started by posing this question...when you all go message-board-posting what do you do?
I know that using the message boards is really urged on SP, but I just can't seem to get into it. I'm not a novice to BBS systems - but it's more the fact that most of the threads have large numbers of replies.

I find this discouraging because
a) I feel the need to understand a thread before I post, and don't feel like reading 100+ replies first; and
b) people seem to respond so quickly in these that by the time I never bother to go back and check up on previous posts to see how others responded.

So, what do you do?

Yes. It is an awesome show. Too bad they can't all win the money, since they all work so hard. But, money or not, they all wind up winners since they all lose weight and get healthier.

It's not 25% yet, only about 18%, but thanks for the nice compliment. Glad you liked the poem, but I can't take credit for it. I copied it from another post because I liked it so much I wanted to share it with my teammates on a few teams.

I'm glad you are seeing improvements even if not weight loss. Weight loss will only require a little bit more effort. This is something you need to do for you first and then for your loved ones. Everyday that you continue overweight increases your chances of developing serious illnesses like diabetes. I was warned years ago that I was heading in that direction and I failed to act. Please don't make the same mistake I did.

Now, I almost feel like a veteran, I have been on sparks for a month, and I can say it works, not neccesarily in weight loss alone, but about how you deal and look at yourself, others and life. I am noticing marked improvements in my moods, been able to quit smoking, lower my alcohol use, become a better listener, less authoratative (LOL), and a lot better at evaluating and setting my personal goals.
the weight is not coming off, but I have to take blame for that, too little willpower. I think very positive, however I am realizing tommorrow is not the day that I should count on to help me.
I have to make today count, because today sets the pace for all my tomorrows

thanks for all your support and kind words.

The following poem was posted on another Team. I thought it was worth sharing:

GIVE A LITTLE ROCK TO A FRIEND.

I am a little diet rock, As cute as I can be.
Although I'm sweet to look at, I'm both fat and sugar free.
When you get up each morning, Lift me high into the air, and set me on the floor 10 times, before you take your chair.
Please place me on the table, at the place you plan to eat. Then remember that I'm watching, What you do and all you eat.
When you are serving up your plate, Please leave my section free, and I'll reduce the calories, by the space you leave for me.
Then after you have eaten, although I'm just a rock, Please slip me in your pocket and take me for a walk.
If you do this faithfully, then in a month or two, Although I will be just the same you'll be a slimmer "YOU".

I am growing fonder of videos, as well... I use my YMCA, but I know that's not an option for everyone.
Our local mall, while small by big city standards, has an active group of 'mall walkers' - many malls, in fact, encourage it. It is a safe, well lit facility, and on a bus line in many towns. Just pick how long you want to walk and get going!

What about fitness videos, aerobics, stairs, etc. I do those kinds of things when the weather doesn't cooperate.

She walks, jogs, or marches in place for 30 min. and counts it as 30 min. of cardio. If you know how fast you usually walk (15 min. mile, 21 min. mile, 30 min. mile) just count it at your normal walking pace. Mine is usually 30 min. mile as I do little walking since I have bone-on-bone arthritis and walking is difficult and very uncomfortable for me.

Sharon - she marches for the same length of time she'd walk? - what would be the calories burned using this method - roughly the same?

I missed my walks last week due to the bad weather and this would be a good solution I think! - something is better than nothing!

I have an exercisxe bike in my living room that I use all the time. My daughter likes to walk and we don't have a treadmill, so when the weather is bad she marches in place in the living room while watching TV.

What got me motivated to lose my excess weight? - looking at the spare tire I'm carrying at my waist - realizing I couldn't fit into most of my clothes anymore - developing high blood pressure and realizing that Type II diabetes musn't be far off then either! WHEW!!! Time to get up off the couch and do something!

this is how I feel after one week
keeping track of what sets you off and finding different ways of looking and dealing with it helps.
i have been on this site 1 week almost an 1 hour a day but revisiting my goals writing them down thinking about them works
i feel emotionally and nutrionally healthier
its worth my time to do this.
its a great day

That's the great thing about SP. There are no deadlines on weight loss. If it comes off slow, that's ok. If your losing at a great pace that's even better. And when you reach goal, you can continue tracking to help you maintain. Good luck everyone. emoticon

This time is the last time. Period. I have arthritis and some minor heart issues that are not going away. And I am tired of my own excuses. We had a family reunion this summer and I look terrible in the pictures. The fact is that I (this is really sick) actually convinced myself that it was "okay" because my younger sister was fatter than me. My younger sister was fatter than me at my wedding 30 years ago when I weighed 117 lbs! So what! (Sheesh, denial can be so aggravating!!)

I am finally (I hope) mature enough to realize I will not live forever and have got to stop the merry-go-round once and for all.

Never had a problem losing the weight, it's keeping it off that trips me up. I am a self-propelled random excuse generator.

With Sparkpeople, I see my healthy side fighting to get out and getting the reinforcements needed to do just that!

For me it was doctor's orders. I am a type II diabetic , among other things, and my doctor told me to lose 53 lbs. She set that goal for me in Jan. 2007 and said I had one year to do it. I am almost there. When I reach that goal I will begin working on the next 50 lbs.

How about a thread about what spurred us into action to lose weight this time round. For me this time it was due to being made to feel a freak, whilst on holiday in Tenerife, I had a phone call to say come home quickly as my father had been given my a couple of days to live. I got a flight back that evening, on the flight I sat next to a woman who did nothing but complain, tut, drop hints that i should have booked extra leg room, moan about the fact I had my arm on the arm rest. All her family seemed to join in swinging on the back of my chair, banging into me at every concievable moment. I will be the first to admit that I am fat BUT my bum didn't overhang into her space, the arm rest was as much mine as hers AND besides she may be thinner than me but her boobs sagged . Deep breath, rant over I will have space on the airplane next year.

Hi and welcome, Heather.

Kimberly, a thread to report our weight loss is a nice idea, but did you realize you can show everyone just how much you have lost on your weight tracker. If they want to know all they need to do is the math. Congratulations to you on your 8 lb. loss. You are off to a great start.

Hello. I am new to this. I am starting at a very high weight. But, I know that I am going to succeed this time!. I have cut soda out of my life. I drank a lot of mountain dew before. Now, I have a glass of Diet pepsi once in a while! Having trouble getting all the water, but Im working on it. I like the idea of telling myself that I need to do it today. Then, tomorrow I will do the challenge again. Thanks for the idea!

Hi all,

I have been doing weight watchers, but just bought a new house and don't have time or money for it anymore. I did pretty well with it, and this site looks a lot like theirs, so I am hoping it will keep me on track. I like the idea of small, daily challenges too.

Hi all. This is my first time on SP (joined 3/9/07). My DIL was the one who told me about SP amd I am so thankful that she did. I could not do it on my own but with SP it is finally coming off.

One thing that helps is looking at this as a lifestyle change, not a diet. When we diet we only make temporary changes in the way we eat. But if we make this a lifestyle change and make it a habit to eat this way, we will never have to diet again.

Hi all!
I follow WW but I am also going to track my progress here. I am a visual person and if I can see the progress it encourages me. The big problem with that is if I get stuck it discourages me which has happened to me recently :(. Today is a new day and that is not going to get me down. Nice to meet you all and hope to get to know you all, well maybe not all, I do have to sleep, and cook and, well live so hope to get to know some of you and no offense to those I don't get to know cause I am sure you are all very nice. ttyl :)

I'll echo that. I gave up last time when the scales refused to budge. What I DIDN'T notice was that my clothes were fitting better and I felt better. Not making that mistake again.

Welcome back, Spinnychick!

Welcome back Spinnychick. Having been here before you know what a great site this is. I started out with over 100 lbs to lose too. It's coming off slow but if I can do it so can you. Just don't give up when the scales don't budge for weeks at a time. You will still be getting healthier. Good luck to you. Nancy

hi nancy
i am in the restaurant biz too. I have a hard time with being in the same rut. My guests and staff expect me to behave a certain way. They don't seem to like change. What to do? I really don't like telling people face to face about my personal shortcomings.

Small, short challenges seem to work best for me. If I try to drink 8 glasses of water _just for today_, and then give myself the same challenge tomorrow, I'm more likely to do it than if I challenge myself to drink those 8 glasses every day this week.

Did I make sense? emoticon I'm not caffinated yet.

I really like the idea of challenges. I know challenges have helped me in the past. They help me to stay focused and get me motivated.

When you stand still, you reject the struggle, and you refuse to change and grow. Ultimately, you reject fulfillment, happiness, the dance for joy and everything else that is eternally good. ---Matthew Kelly

Great suggestion. New ones usually have a lot of questions. I know I did. Maybe once the class gets going we can introduce a challenge of some sort.

What about one for questions? That way if someone needs help with something it doesn't get lost in the general postings.

Not too bad. Have you thought of any topics we can pre-setup? I knew we need the intro and a group chat. Any suggestions?
