I have 2 cats. One is named Blitz, and the other is named Nikel. Blitz was already named when I got her from a shelter, and Nikel I thought up myself. She was a stray. My brother took in all the mothers kittens cause she got killed by a dog. So he gave me one, and I thought of a nickel, and changed the spelling to Nikel. emoticon

My sister's friend was moving and couldn't keep her cat. The friend was going to give it to a shelter (who puts animals down after a certain period of time if no one adopts) and my sister is allergic. The old owner thought he was a she as a kitten, so named him Emmy by mistake. My sister knows I will take care of any animal that that is furry so less than a month of moving into my own apartment (outside of campus) I had a pet. My boyfriend and I re-named him, but we needed a name where the kitty would still understand. We decided on Lemmy, as in the lead singer/bassist from Motorhead. I have found only a few other of my friends have been able to make that connection haha
When his Mom called to tell us her barn cat (a calico) she had just found was pregnant, I asked if she had another calico could we take her. She ended up being the runt of the litter but made up for it with a little attitude. I originally wanted to name her Emily, to go along with our older kitty, but when we had her home it was a little difficult to say their names right. "Lemily" came out a couple of times :P She began pouncing on Lemmy and being pretty brave for the little fart that she was, so I called her Tiger Lily for a while and eventually Lily stuck. She had her first birthday, then we found out she had the kitty virus. I miss her every day!

It is fun to think of future pet names but I think I'll wait until one finds us :)

When Gabe was a little kitten, he was soooo cute. I thought he was a babe (he still is). I had just finished reading a Tamar Myers' Magdalena Yoder mystery. At that point she was dating Gabe Rosen (a.k.a. Gabe the Babe). That is whom I named Gabe after. I then named his sister who soon became my cat, Magdalena. Almost three years ago, I lost a dear cat that I got from the Humane Society. I then adopted Regan from someone in the area. Regan was named after Carol Higgins Clark's Regan Reilly.

Our first cat was a 'loaner' from our vetrinarian. It had been abandoned and somehow wound up at the vet's office. He 'loaned' it to us to see if it was compatible with our dog...and our family. We had never owned a cat but my son wanted one. The vet had named it Rocky Road so we kept the cat, and the name, and called it Rocky.
One VERY cold February a 2nd cat started visiting us when it was freezing or snowing. It would sit outside howling plaintively until we let it in. We would take it in for the night and let it out in the morning. One weekend it rained and froze for 3 days. When it finally cleared up...we let it outside again. It sat out there crying until we let it in again. It never went outside again. Because we already had Rocky....it seemed only fitting to name the 2nd one...Bullwinkle. We call him Bull.
Our 1st cat died of old age and we took in another stray. My daughter named her Daisy because she is pure white like the flower and she was pretty delicate when we took her in.
Her story and picture are in one of my blogs and her picture is in my photos.

I hope you all got a chance to check out my cats on my spark page. They are so cute and are all lovely. My little Poi has become besotted with me and follows me around the houe like a litle doggie. He really is cute. All the cats are cute. I named my cats with partner and gave them Maori name from New Zealand. They start with Poi - Maori for boy, Pepi - Maori for baby, then Pango - Maori for black. It just happened with the naming. We really didn't mean to give them all Maori names so I am relly glad that they have their names. Such a wonderful topic. Many thanks.

I like real names - like people names, but sometimes other names seem to suit the cat. They're all so special. Sometimes it takes a long time to get the perfect name that just exactly fits.

My black kitty was Tequila-I always wanted a black panther named Tequila & a Siberian tiger named Sunrise, a fave drink; Carbon Copy because when I first seen him he was an exact carbon copy of Tequila when he was a kitten; and Sneaky Pi from the Mrs. Murphy Mystery Series by Ria Mae Brown and her cat Sneaky Pie Brown. And Sneaky Pi lives up to his name

The name just has to fit the cat--looks, personality, whatever. I have PIB, she was my son's cat, now he moved to Kentucky so she is mine. PIB is for Puss in Boots because her feet are very dark. She was rescued by my son from a punk rock party years ago. His buddy liberated her sister. They were in bad shape, healty now, but never got very big. Her nickname is Missy or Little Miss.

My baby is Bull. His full name is Bull Shannon. We also call him the Fat Man. He is just a big freaking cat, not really all that fat.

I love them both. We have always had cats, and it just doesn't seem right without one. I have tried after one died, but just couldn't do it. My friend has a cat who might be pregnant, so I may have a new addition to the family.

I stick with music names for my cats since I'm a musician. My sweet little Riff is 1 yr. old. My beloved Marley was 14 when he passed and years ago I had to give my sweet little Jazzy away because my new baby was allergic. I've only had 2 cats since the boys left the nest. One of my sons has a sibling of my Riff. They named him Potato: ):)

Hubby and I got our one kitty, Exley, a few days before we got our second kitty, Wiley. When we got Exley, we knew we were going to get a second cat , so we kept tryong to think of duo names, Barney & Fred, Batman & Robin, etc. But none of them seemed right. That weekend we rented "L.A. Confidential" and on of the main characters was named Exley. I joked that we could call our kitten Exley or X and that the other one could be Wiley or Y. The names stuck and we have X and Y. Our son has been campaigning lately to add a "Z" to the family. Maybe we will.

I foster cats (mostly kittens), and it gets really hard to come up with names. About 5 years ago I got a litter of 3 very sick kittens (2 sibs had already died), and I wanted to give them strong names, so I named the 2 boys Cagney and Bogart, and the girl was Bacall. Unfortunately, Bogart and Bacall died, but Cagney survived and is still with me because after all the nursing I did, I just couldn't give him up. Last December I was kitty-sitting for another foster, and had a 6 week old kitten of hers named Tina Roo. Cagney was totally fascinated with her, and would spend hours watching her play. When she went back to her foster mom, Cagney's whole disposition changed; he seemed to get depressed and wasn't his normal happy-go-lucky self. I asked to bring Tina Roo back for a weekend to see if Cagney was just missing her, and sure enough, he perked right up. So needless to say, Tina Roo is now part of our family, but with a new name. For those of you old enough to remember the TV show Cagney and Lacey, I changed Tina Roo's name to Lacey, and they are still a great pair!

I just joined this team and I'm amused by this post. I love asking people where they got their pets' names. I named Linus after Matt Damon's character in Ocean's Eleven. Even though I didn't care for the book A Prayer for Owen Meaney, I named Owen after the main character simply because I like his name.

I work at a college that has a veterinary tech program. The program has an agreement that local shelters can send shelter animals to get fixed and vaccinated before they're returned and hopefully adopted out. This means that the students can practice on real animals and don't run the risk of causing someone to lose their pet; a nice set up. One day a teacher brought out Linus (orange short hair tabby with a white belly; apparently Linus is a common name for orange/"flax" colored cats) out and I immediately fell in love. He was the most popular cat there with all of the students and teachers. The teacher asked if I wanted to adopt him and I just squealed "Yes!" Later, I went in the back room to look at Linus again, where I met "Stimpy" (gray, black and brown short hair tabby). Both cats made biscuits (a.k.a. "kneading") in their cages at the sight of me and I immediately knew I needed both. I later decided I wanted to continue with the Charlie Brown theme inspired by Linus. After contemplating the other "boy" names in Peanuts ("Rerun" is Linus's little brother, but it just didn't sound like a name), I decided on Schroeder. The boys have been with me going on 10 months in January and act like they were litter mates. Linus plays fetch with his toys and will lick the skin off your hand if you let him; Schroeder goes nuts for a laser pointer. Both have claimed pillows or blankets as their respective "biscuit" material, but sometimes use mom's tummy. :) emoticon

Mischief, our oldest cat got her name for the obvious reason. Charlie and Midi were starving kittens that showed up on our front lawn and I fell in love with them. Midi is short for Midnight Star, for I was amazed that starving as he was he preferred affection and his generosity of spirit seemed appropriate to name him after The Guiding Star. Charlie got his name because I asked him what his name was and the name Charlie popped into my mind. Charlie? was my response and the response of many who hear his name. Yep, Charlie. Midi died from feline lukemia several years ago and I still miss him. Sophie showed up at my house as a kitten, believed to be brought by her momma because she was sick with pneumonia and wouldn't have made it on her own. She is solid white and I "saw" her as a beautiful healthy adult, and named her after Sophie Loren. Cleo, rescued from a correctional facility I used to work at, is a beautiful tortise shell long hair, and she was named after Cleopatra, in all of her jeweled splendor. Snickers is an orange shorthair that my daughter named after the cookie snicker-doodle. More often than not I call him Knickerbocker as a modification of the popcorn giant (redenbocker). Percy is a kitten (no longer a kitten) that my daughter had and couldn't take with her when she moved out of her apartment. More often than not we call him ThunderPaws because he is such a klutz and tries to be the Alpha of the house.

I named Izzy after Izzy on Grey's Anatomy because she is my favorite character of any TV show.

My DH named BeBop. When we first brought them home, they were 6 weeks old, and he was born and raised at the shelter so obviously had never been on carpet. He literally did a Michael Jackson dance! It took a while to name him, and then it came to my DH because he literally BOPs all over the place. He can be just sitting down, and if one of us gets up to go somewhere, he'll BOP up to race us.

The same thing happened to me when I was in college. I sent my kitties (Morris and Smokey) to stay with my parents for the summer because I was going to have a roommate who is allergic and when I was able to pick them up, my dad wouldn't let me take them.

We come up with some odd names for our cats, or at least they would be odd if people knew the background of the names. emoticon
Annie is short for Anniversary since we adopted her near our anniversary. Indie is her brother and he was named for Independence Day (both adopted early July 2006). Indie races around like a race car driver on an empty track, so the name fits even better, though most people who know him assume he was named because of the racing around. lol
Rascal (a stray we adopted) was named Bella at first...until we found out she was a he (what a little rascal!). Oops. He acted like a mama cat to a kitten that was with him (that we also adopted) and he gained weight to the point that we though he was going to have kittens until the "we are officially adopting you" vet visit and we were informed that he wasn't ever going to have kittens. He's very fluffy and was already fixed when he came here, so in my defense it was very hard to tell what he was.
Those are just a few of our furry kids and I hope you enjoyed meeting them.

I've rescued a lot of cats and kittens (and some dogs) over the last 30 years some of the names were:
Growltiger, Grisabela, Spankypoo, Xena, Lala, Tommy, Andrew, Dottie, Ginger, Buffy, Tippy (amputated tail), Mr Blackwell, Ralph the mouth, Pikachu, Patches, Frankenpussy, Joker, Tuxedo Sam, Paris and Nicole, Beau, Bobbins, Buttons, Faux Buttons(a cat we thought was Buttons) Alley McSqueal, Max, Taz, Willow .....

2. Suffering is caused by our attachments and avoidances.
3. Suffering can be ended.
4. Freedom from suffering is possible by following the Eightfold path.

The cat I have now we got when he was 18 months old. We just kept his name. Most of the time our cats are named to a creature in a book one of the children is reading. Our last cat was Drop Dead Fred. Called Fred

Cleopatra- due to the black "eyeliner" markings coming from the outside of her eyes
Cammy- because she stays camoflaged, when she hides, you can't find her
Nala- When she was a kitten, she marched through the house like Nala on the Lion King....always alert and on the prowl
Nana (RIP)- I have a dog named Peanut Butter and he was a yellow tabby, so (ba)nana only fit

I started to name my cats alphabetically. First there was Alice, then Bear. Then my father told me about a stray in his neighborhood, so I took that one in and called her Cocoa. But I wanted to get a playmate for Cocoa since she was younger than Bear and Alice, so I got a kitten from the vet's office. She was already named Betty, so that blew my naming convention out of the water. Then, last September when my aunt passed away, we took in her kitten named, Widget. So, now I refer to them as vitamins: A, B1, B2, C and W! emoticon

My oldest is Precious cause I haven't owned a cat before then for 2 years since my landlord would not allow it and she instantly won my heart. I'm glad that I had moved so that I could get her. The second is a Himalain kitten named Hannah. I try to get my animal's names from the bible.

I have two cats (both blow ins, just showed up) I named the girl Josie after Josie and the Pussycats.

The male we started off with Puss then it got extended to Pussa and then my Mum (who has no sense of decorum emoticon ) added ss on to the end which made Pussass!!

He actually comes to it as well.

We got a kitten yesterday from my sister and brother-in-law. It's cute little grey and black tiger cat. My brother-in-law says it's a girl but we're not absolutely sure. I also think it's a girl but my husband thinks it's a boy. Needless to say, the little thing doesn't have a name yet! We have a list of girl names but only one boy name selected. We'll have to see what the vet says this week.

My oldest cat, Truffle, already had a name when I got him from the Human Society, a name I was SOOO tempted to keep. He's solid grey and they had named him Church, anyone who has ever seen Pet Semetary... Well, I decided to be good and let him name himself. He wasn't feeling all that well when I got him (they pass stuff around constantly in the shelter) so he was always under my feet. It was narrowed down to Mushroom or Truffle, Truffle won. The little one, Oona, I "rescued" from under the hood of a semi at work. She was only six weeks old and it was October so I'm thinking the mother put her up in there to keep her warm. I tried and tried to come up with a name related to the truck... Semi, Mack, etc. Almost named her Mackenzie, but finally gave up and let my ex name her. He stole the name of one of my characters in an online game I used to play - Oona. That name I took from the fairy in the movie Legend that was always doing the "glamours".

I wish I had great stories about how my cats were named, but I don't.

Wendell, my little baby dumplin,...well, he looked up at me with pretty little kitten eyes and told me his name was Wendell and that he wanted to go home with me.

Casey Thompson, my daughter's demon cat, got his name, Casey, after I told her that his "real" name was actually Carter, but she didn't like that. She did agree that it was something with a "C", and he became Casey. My son put Thompson with it and these days, he is called Thompy more than anything. (I'm fairly sure he is such a meany because he is tired of everyone calling him something other than his "real" name, Carter.)

Jerry Lee, my husband's "min-pin", got his name after the husband called him "killer" the night we brought him home. My husband is a confirmed cat-hater and tells everyone how much he suffers through all the cats we have here. Shortly before we rescued Jerry Lee, he had wanted to buy a min-pin so he could have a lap dog that would keep the cats away from him. Instead, he got a lap-cat and they have become true pals.

I have two grand"kitties" as well, Brodie, a rescued calico and Lars, her beautiful butterscotch-color striped cat. When I go visit, I find myself calling Brodie, Miss Brodie Blue Paw. She had one paw dyed blue during one of my son's hair-coloring adventures. My son and daughter-in-law call Lars, "Lars Cookie", but I have no idea where the Cookie part comes from.

Yes, we do love our cats here...and, our "min pin", Jerry Lee.

our last kitty was an outdoor cat named Pooper Kitty He got his name because when it rained he would poop in the window box outside the kitchen sink window.
He died just over a year ago and I miss him so. I still have dreams that I am looking for him because he is lost. He was as one of my kids. emoticon

That's cute; our cat Frank was named after "Frank the Tank" from Old School. I hated it at first, but it grew on me!

My husband named our cat Maxamus (after Maximus from Gladiator). And he lives up to his name! He's a fighter! One of his favorite things is to hide, and then when I walk by he runs out, jumps up and grabs on to my leg, then runs away!

I named mine Artemis for a couple of reasons. I have always loved the name and would love to name a child that, but was always told it would just be too weird and cruel to name a child Artemis. So I named my "child" that instead. Then there was an issue where I was extremely mistaken... I thought Artemis was the sun goddess in greek mythology. Which would have worked perfect, because Artemis is orange and I thought it was a girl. SOOOO wrong. First, my baby is a boy. Second, Artemis is actually the MOON goddess. Her brother Apollo is the sun god. I don't know how I got that confused. However, the name stuck, and it works. Whoever Artemis is, she's the goddess of the hunt as well, and my baby has that going for him. ;)

Thanks for the suggestions guys! We still haven't found the right name for him. We tried Rocky for a while but it didn't seem right, right now we are debating between Slash or Shredder, and then every other name that crosses our path emoticon

How about Cosmo, Onyx, Scout or Storm?

The next black cat/kitten I get, I'm going to call him/her Onyx. I really like that name!
