California.

Dittos to dulcesmama:

free and reduced lunch %
ESL population %
Full day K (have been for the last 15 years)
cut off date and number of 4 year olds (I started the year with ELEVEN four year olds)
but I'm lucky in one respect: I only have 24 students!

Starting the year off only 4 weeks post-op from a spine surgery wasn't the greatest for me, but it was better than trying to hand all that to a sub. What can u do?

(answer: retire? Lol).
I only have 25 years in (17 years in K), and 7 years before I turn 55. Until then....

Oh, my goodness---my heart constricted and my eyes watered as I read this! What a terrible situation. Our friend Lynn is in California, too, I think...as well as several other teachers. But I don't think their situations are quite as crowded or 'restricted' as yours. You certainly have your work cut out for you. It doesn't sound like there will be much of a change for you, but at least you know what you're up against. Prayers for a better year....

My husband and I rode the Wine Train in Vallejo in 2000--it was a lovely place! But I had no idea of the school situation. Come over to the Teacher's Lounge and join the school year conversation. We all need to be careful about the extra food that's always around and having enough energy to exercise when we get home.

Hello Everyone, I really appreciated finding this Sparks site to help with the weight issues, and this team for the kinder encouragement! This will be my 21st year teaching, 4th in kinder. I teach in Vallejo, CA (north end of the SF Bay Area). My school is about 90% free lunch economically speaking, and my class is about 80% ESL/2nd language learners. Because the state of CA's infinite wisdom makes the cutoff date for registration Dec. 1st, about 1/3 of my class is not yet 5 years old. Because of state budget cuts, and the lack of collective guilt for same over balancing the budget on the back of those same 4-1/2 year olds, my class size is 32, potentially more until they can "balance the classes" after the first 2 weeks of school. We go 1/2 day until Thanksgiving, and then extended day (until 1:30 pm) after that. After which, because we have so much extra spare time, we're expected to "give back" to the school an hour a day assisting in some way, last year I had the 1st grade ESL extra-support language arts group. No regular aide, but we do have a bilingual assistant for about 1 hour per/day, which is fabulous while it lasts, the only real teaching I do all day happens when she's able to be with me! We have voluntary inservice days the 12th & 13th, the 16th & 17th we have mandatory staff development and student/parent orientation, and first student day is the 18th. I will be grateful beyond belief if I actually end up with half a day to work in my room! I've been trying really hard this summer to eat better and drink my daily water, I'm a little worried about how I'm going to continue the good habits when school starts....

I haven't explored it at all, but one of our school parents has a presentation planned for the Winter Olympics. We're doing a parade with flags representing all the countries in our school. It's very international so it should be great!

I did 30 minutes on the treadmill yesterday and 50 crunches!

Great job or way to go is so often what we tell our students, so why not ourselves. Way to go!

So, I am lesson planning and thinking about meal planning for each week. For me it is forming new habits versus the loss of pounds this year. However, I hope that at least ten will be gone by next year. I didn't have a bad year as I am down 2 lbs. from last January and I am down a pants size. I exercised quite a bit, ate pretty healthy and am getting my own kids to eat healthy. I will find out soon if my thyroid is out of sync as I have a growth on it that will be biopsied mid January. I love my job, have a great family and have met new friends on Spark. Life is pretty good and I feel fortunate to have met all the dedicated teachers on this site.

Finally, what is everyone doing in their classes to talk about the winter olympics? I need some fresh ideas!

You have been overwhelmed with stress and my heart goes out to you! My father-in-law had prostrate cancer and it was very aggressive. He had quite the battle with the chemo and such, but had 6 years with nothing. His PSP was up a little lately and he went through chemo again but looked great at Christmas. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Take baby steps and just try to eat healthy and find time for 10 minutes of exercise and be proud of it! You have a lot on your plate and need to praise yourself even if it is not eating the second cookie. We tend to beat ourselves up versus building ourselves up! Good luck and keep me posted! Write anytime you need lift! I enjoy chatting with you! May 2010 get progressively better for you! Happy bday and anniversary!

Oh, that's a great quote to live by! Our actual Christmas eve and day was wonderful, with all our kids and their spouses/gf, etc. with us, too. My birthday was the next day and that was great too.

But we found out the day school was out that my husband has prostate cancer, his sister moved their mother within a mile of us...and she's NOT a happy camper in assisted living! Then MY mother was hospitalized on Tuesday----when it rains, it pours! I've been eating anything in sight and getting no exercise. I think my husband and I are just sort of in shock. I need to get in gear and take extremely good care of ME so I can help take care of everyone else. Easier said than done.

Here's to a New Year that's better all around. Oh, and today, NYE, is my 37th anniversary. What a week!

How was everyone's holiday! I am enjoying my break, but eating my way through it as I fed 12 of our relatives for 5 days. Now I am getting back on track! I did remember something I heard at convention that helped me just keep it to one sweet a day. The person said that if you get a ticket you don't go out the rest of the day and break the law! The same is true when you don't eat right! That stuck with me! Happy 2010!

It is so fun and the kids were really into it today. I have to say that I originally thought I would want to teach first or second grade, but now I just love the special needs preschool. My severe little autistic boy just stopped and stared at me today and gave me such a smile that lit up the room. He was into my fishing game with an actual little boat and was sitting in it and using a fishing pole and laughing. It makes all the planning worth it for that one moment!

One of the hardest things I'm finding with teaching 1st grade is not being able to do my favorite themes or even read a book and do an activity with the kids...the curriculum is absolutely packed and I do individual take-home readers every day so there's just not time. I do SO miss that!

Sounds like a fun and challenging class! Since the Princess and the Frog just came out with Disney, I thought I would do the Frog Prince and the Frog Prince continued this week! Of course we will have to learn the 5 green and speckled frogs, leap frog, and my alligator swamp song which goes to the five little fishes in the sea song! The kids always love it and I haven't done it for a couple years. I always follow with the gingerbread man which we make and he runs away. We make posters and of course other rooms always seem to send us notes that they have seen him but we get them at the end of the day. It is fun and I always bake a fresh one which we enjoy! It is great to help with the children's speech! Enjoy the holiday! I love December!

Don't forget the Primary (Kindergarden) students, I have five 5 year olds, too! The older students are really helpful, encouraging, and supportive with the younger students. It's something I've never seen before. They all treat each other like siblings. I really do have two sets of siblings too. There is some disadvantage to that, there is some bickering!

Grades 1,2, and 3 so are they 6, 7, and 8 years old. There can be a big difference there in maturity. How do the older students treat the younger kids?

I'm Mary, and I'm now teaching 1st grade in a small private school after having taught kindergarten and 2nd grade in parochial schools my whole teaching career! I'm in Houston---it looks like we have a Texas delegation, huh?!

One of my students said a few years ago: I love your hair...it's just like GLUE! Yes, I do use hairspray, lol! And I had the 'wings' comment about my arms even when I was thinner....kids!!!

I teach a special needs preschool class of 12 both am and pm with one assistant and 8 special needs children outside Dayton, Ohio. What I love about teaching is the simple comments, such as, "I love your arms because they are like chicken arms. They wobble." It was a great motivator and meant as a compliment.

Hi. I am Lynn and I teach in El Dorado Hills, California. It is a small community about 20 miles west of Sacramento in northern California. Our state budget is a mess so our class size was raised to 24 this year. Half day, no aides. Currently I have 22 so will get the next two new ones.

I teach in a rural country school in Wisconsin. Even though it is a small school I have 19 in my class and no aid. After the first two weeks of school I get a feeling this may the most challenging crew I have had. But after seeing some of you have over 20 kids I guess it isn't so bad.

I am not sure it is patience but more the ability to put on a dog and pony show each and every day. As long as you keep them busy and entertained they are all pretty much under control. When all else fails send them to centers! Add to that a great PK teacher who sends me a class that already knows the rules and routines. Kinder kids are the greatest. Every day is a whole new world but it is by far the most rewarding age to teach. I have also taught 1st, 2nd, and 9 to 12.

I have to envy someone who has the patience to handle that many kindergarteners, my art class is mixed ages up to 7th graders and it was kind of hard to work with just 15 Ė 20 students a different agesÖ I could only imagine having that many kids with such short attention spans. I would spend more time telling them to pay attention than I would be spending on my lessons. But really it is so rewarding to be able to work with children!

Omigosh! I am so extremely jealous! 2 to 3 students?!?! I teach in Abbott, Texas (home of Willie Nelson). I am the only kindergarten teacher in my school and I will have 21 students. Texas schools just received their accountability rating last week and our school got "Exemplary", the highest rating given to a school district. The office staff said we have been bombarded with calls from parents wanting to transfer their children into our district. Thankfully they are telling them that my class is full! So, I am willing to share a couple of my kids with you!!!

2 or 3 kids....wow.....in my dreams...

I live in Virginia and teach at a Small non-profit Christian Academy... (I only have 2 - possibly 3 students this year) Thatís SMALL! But itís great because you can give the students really good attention and work with them on a non-"rushed" individual basis.

I may have missed a thread like before but I'd be interested in knowing where everyone lives and works.

I'm Susan and I'm in Charleston, SC.

It didn't go on in a day. It won't come off in a day. If I take it one day at a time, I'll reach my goal.
