I am usually a very regular lap swimmer but for the past 3 months, my indoor pool has been shut down for repairs and upgrades. I dropped in yesterday to check if maybe they would be able to open earlier than the predicted Oct 15th date. No luck. So I have to wait for another 2 weeks to resume my swimming. During this time, I have tried hard to make myself get on my recumbent bike but I just Hate it!!! I love my swimming. I have gained about 6 lbs during this break and I can't wait to get swimming again. Oh 2 weeks - hurry up and pass so I can get back to my Love.

2011 One Hour Swim--a United States Masters Swimming postal event where you swim for an hour (no fancy suits or equipment) and post your distance and milestone cummulative splits. I was apprehensive and set a goal of 3000 yards (knowing I am still recovering from a 10 day bout with head and chest cold). I managed 3035 yards. The last 300 yards was the worst because the foot cramps I fought the whole way turned into full blown calf cramps, but I was determined. When I hit the turn for 3000 yards-I backed off and stretched out. The next 50 turn, I saw my signal to quit swimming and I was THRILLED to stop. I won't win that event and only hope not to be last in my age group, but well satisfied that I made my goal. Each year this gets harder to do. CMY (Carol)

Pre-Thanksgiving Mini-Meet at ANA YMCA (my home pool)
50 yards Fly 43.88 1st
100 yards Free 1:26.18 1st
50 yards Back 46.01 1st
500 yards Free 8:25.41 1st

Not too bad for first SCY meet of the season--always rusty in the fall.....especially after missing a week of workouts when I went to North Carolina to clean out Mom's cottage.

Next meet Dec 10-12 at Boston University--New England Masters Short Course Meters Championships--Swimming the 800 Free Friday night and then the first 5 events Saturday (singing in a concert Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon)..always a conflict for this meet and concert.

Now I'm qualified for National Senior Games in Houston, TX 2011 in 12 events so I can pick my 6 events when I see the schedule.

I thought this would be the last meet this summer, but now I'm thinking I can go next weekend and swim the Jenny Thompson meet in Dover, NH. Originally we were going to be away in Maine, but those plans changed......thinking hard about whether I want one more meet or not this summer...that one is long course meters.

I finished the One-Hour Postal Swim for Masters on Sat. Jan. 30th and I swam 3925yards in the one hour. Not quite what I was wanting but it's better than when I swam it the one other time and I was 22 then!

Also, my Jan. totals for the GTD event for Masters are; 6.13 miles swam, 58.85 miles ran, 18.72 miles biked, and about 5 miles walked.

P.S. I am not a distance swimmer. LOL

I don't know how well this will translate to the post, but here are the results for both me and MichaelY70 who is my real life son! Michael is 39 so at the very top of his age group so I think he really rocks to have won high point for his age/gender category!

First day of our Regionals (New England Masters Short Course Yards Championships), I swam the 1000 yard freestyle. I placed 2nd with 16:42.26 I was seeded first with 16:53.08 and a woman with and 18:00:00 seed time won with 16:26.11. I swam my race exactly like I wanted, just not as fast as I wanted, but I am perfectly satisfied with my 2nd place swim that lowered my seed time by 11 seconds.

Next weekend I have 12 events and 4 relays--my coach tells me I get to do the fly in both of the medley relays--aren't I lucky--I get to do the 50 fly twice, 100 fly twice, and 200 fly once in the same weekend! Woo Hoo!

I swam tired on Sunday at the mini-meet. My results were like a month ago. Since I scraped paint in the morning, I wasn't too surprised. The other factor was the sun was coming though windows and made seeing the wall and bottom for turns in the deep end almost impossible as well as coming off the wall doing backstroke.

200 Freestyle 3:03
100 IM 1:35

I beat myself today! I swam 5km in 2 hours! emoticon and I tried applying some of those great butterfly tips--thanks Carol emoticon

Well, I swam 4.5km today in 2hours. The first 3km were within an hour, but the last 1.5 my shoulder was aching so I really slowed down a lot. Oh well, it was still really good. It is the most that I have done in a long time. Maybe next time I will make 5km.

RE your idea, I usually swim 3-4 hours a week, but I am thinking of adding a little more. I am not sure yet.

I think that tracking number of minutes in the pool is a great idea. I'll set a new goal for March that has number of minutes as its end point. If you all estimate how many minutes you plan to swim, that might help me judge how many to add. Thanks, Carol

P.S. I think I'll send out a team SparkMail about suggested number of minutes for goal or something. Hang tight. CMY

3km (3000 metres)

1km free
1 km mixed breast/butterfly/kick/arms only
1 km free

I am working on my butterfly and flip turns--they are getting much stronger! YAY!

emoticon Hi everyone :)

i'm not doing much in laps yet. I'm doing water exercise and some kick series; just now moving from 1 min to 90 seconds per kick, and from 15 - 20 consecutive mins to 20 - 30 mins to build stamina in preparation for lap swims.

Is there a way to convert minutes (think water aerobics or deep water strength training) into miles?

Otherwise, I would love to see a team goal that allows us to track daily minutes.

Today I swam in a Y mini-meet with the following results:

200yd Free 3:01 (9 second improvement)
100yd Breast 1:26 (3 second improvement)
50yd Back 43
50Yd Breast 50.25
100yd Free 1:22 (4 second improvement)

I also swam 2 relays, the three arm race and the push-pull race. Our total ages for the relay is 254 and we did a mixed relay. For the 200yd Free Relay, we did 2:34--my split was 39. My partner and I were 2nd in the three armed race. Every one was together at the finish of the push-pull, but we weren't first or second although close. A fun way to spend valentine's day, hun??? My DH came along, the meet took just over 2 hours and then we went out to a nice dinner at a sushi place near home. (I replaced my electrolytes with a beer--yum, a Sopora Reserve--new to me and very light and delicious.)

Nicework, MasterSwimmer. Looks like you are on-track for your Canadian Nationals meet.

Today I swam in a mini-meet in Exeter, NH. My results (Short Course Yards):
100 Fly 1:43.60
100 Breast 1:49.89
200 Free 3:10.19
100 Back 1:43.43
100 Free 1:26.60

I was 1st in my events, but had no competition, so it is hardly worth mentioning. I was happy with all my swims except 100 Fly and 200 Free. I have not been swimming enough fly in workouts because I have been trying to bring my breaststroke and backstroke up to speed to improve my IMs. Well those strokes are definitely improving, but my fly is suffering. I am going to have to put in some extra workouts with lots of fly before our NE Championships. I went out too slow in the 200 Free (1:33ish according to my ex-coach) I used my long distance pace for the first 100 and that was my mistake. I should have gone for the faster pace I used in the 100 free. I am going to make an effort to use the faster pace for some of the 200 sets in workouts instead of copping out with the long distance pace. Just step it up! Carol (CMY)

Results from my Short Course (Yards) Swim Meet last Sunday:
400 IM : 6:56.96 2nd place
200 Fly : 3:34.97 1st place
50 Back : :39.57 1st place
50 Fly : :40.41 2nd place
100 IM : 1:27.12 3rd place
100 Back: 1:27.58 3rd place
Not bad considering the competition. Was held in Toronto so was a bigger meet. emoticon

Congratulations KathisMom! Wonderful improvement!

I swam the one hour postal meet tonight and logged 3465 yards. The best I have ever done is 3510 so I felt good about the yardage.

Hi,
By way of introduction, I swam for Reston Swim team in the summer from 70-76, Solotar Swim team and Herndon High all in VA. I just recently started swimming masters, in September 08, and Saturday was my second swim meet.
I improved my times in the 50 fly (from 39 to 37 something), 50 free (from 35 to 33 something) and I also swam the 100 free in 1.18. Short course yards.
Normal practice bathing suit.
I swim for the Boulder Aquatic Masters in Boulder, CO and am a member of the Colorado Masters.

Fishermom, Well done. Your times are looking good to me. I only wish I was as fast! Which region do you swim in? I swim for the New England Masters (NEM) USMS club and the ANA YMCA Masters Swim Team workout group. We have top ten fastest swims ever records in NEM and I am lucky enough to have ranked times in all age groups starting from 50-54 and up. I don't have a number one time, but just glad to have any times ranked. I have two very strong competitors in my age group--one just moved to Florida, and the other was on a leave from swimming and just returned and is as fast as ever--not really in my league--she swims like a 40 year old!!!!! When I retire, though, she better watch it because I'll get more pool time and who knows what will happen then!

Congratulations again. When is your championship meet? Our next one in March 21, 27-29 at Harvard University Blodget Pool (NEM SCY Championships and workout group challenge)

My season is going along great! I have added days in the pool and more yardage plus Crossfit and I have seen a lot of improvement! With two meets left until championships here are my season best times (in yards)

50 Fly 30.11
100 Fly 1:09.08
200 IM 2:32.62
100 IM 1:11.33
400 IM 5:22.09
500 Free 5:55.10
100 BR 1:17.69
200 BR 2:47.31
200 Free 2:14.58

I am pretty pleased! Our league keeps all time top 10 times since 1976. I am ranked in all of my "regular" events. I am moving up age groups next season so I want to be sure to leave some good times behind! I am about 5 seconds away from the #1 time in the 400 IM and less than a half a second in the 100 Fly. My goal is to grab those this season! Most of all, though, we are having a great time doing it. We have an awesome team and my husband swims too...it's been great to have swimming! Hope that everyone else is happy with how swimming/being active can transform your lives!

In the New England Masters Short Course Meters Championships, Dec. 12-14, I swam the first five events with the following results:

800M Freestyle 14.19.20 (2nd)
200M Freestyle 3.19.90 (2nd)
100M IM 1:46.82 (2nd)

There were a total of 5 women in my age group (60-64). I am thrilled about the results. Next thing I am aiming for is a one hour swim--a US National postal meet.

Fishermom, You did a great job! Those times are pretty impressive. I think you like the fly as much as I do. I would love to swim those times. I could probably set some World records with those times in my age group (60-64) I swim three days a week too--that are the only coached workouts and with fulltime work and other activities--3 is enough for me. Keep up the good work. Carol (CMY)

OK, so I am pretty happy with my meet on Sunday. It is still early in the season and I am pretty broken down, I worked out for 6 days straight leading up to the meet. Here are my results (Short course yards).

100 IM 1:09.89
50 Fly 30.17
100 Fly 1:09.42
400 IM 5:23.15

I was most pleased with the 400 IM...it is WAY off of the time that I did in college, but I keep reminding myself that I have only been back in the water for a year AND that was 12 years and 2 kids ago! I can only swim 3 days a week, so I am happy with my progress! Next meet in 2 weeks!
